Mounting Hi-lift Outside of Vehicle
« on: April 27, 2016, 01:25:57 PM »
I learned a valuable lesson this weekend, don't leave the hi-lift under the backseat when the truck is fully loaded.  lol  With that being said, I would like to use the tube mounts to mount the jack on the outside of the vehicle when I'm doing trips like TMR.  However, I don't think the tube mounts will work on my roof rack anymore, since I have a Hep's roof basket up there.  I know there was one person that had their jack mounted on the upper tube of their front bumper, but I can't remember who that was.  I like this option, but I don't have protective tubing like this.  The lower tubing will allow me to mount the jack, but it will sit even with the headlights and grille.  Do you all think this a good option, or should the jack stay above the hood if it's mounted on the front bumper?

Possibly it could effect your approach angle if you were to encounter something pretty steep or a large rock.  I don't see any major difference in the mounting spots above or below the hood for weekend camping/overland trips like TMR.  I could imagine the frustration of having to unpack your vehicle to access the jack so I would say go for it.

If it were me, I would mount it to the dephep before I would mount it to the front bumper.  Eric(Celt) is the one that has his hi-lift mounted to his calmini bumper.

As Jordan said it's me that has it on the bumper. I have had it there for several years now and have had no problems with it. Super easy to get off and on if needed. It does get grimy while on the trails but I clean and oil it when I get home and one of these days if I quit being so cheap I may buy one of those neoprene boots they sell for them that covers the ratcheting mechanism. I think where you show the mounting options in the pic you posted it shouldn't be a big deal or get in the way of anything if you use the style brackets I have. They haven't slipped or moved at all in the last few years once I tightened them. I think I got them from Hi-Lift but can verify if you want.

If you use the hi-lift brand tube mounts, you can pivot them down a little to make sure the jack doesn't sit in front of your headlights or aux lights too badly. My only concerns would be catching it on brush or branches, and obstructing your fairlead point if/when you mount up a winch (or having to pivot the jack back up, which would then obstruct the headlights as you said).

Geo Explorer from TNX has his hi-lift mounted on the front of his rig down low like that, but I think he's running some kind of custom version of a RockyMtnX winch bracket with an OEM front bumper. Maybe he'd be a good resource to reach out to and ask about it. His didn't look to be in the way of anything at all when we ran Death Valley with him back in November.

Yeah, I was thinking the same.  I think it would probably stay a little more clean if it's mounted up high.

Okay, I thought it was you, but I couldn't remember.  Just FYI, if you do decide to get the neoprene cover, buy the Hi-Lift brand.  I bought some off-brand and I can't get it to stretch enough to get it zipped.  I was looking at those tube style brackets, but it turns out that Tony might actually have a jack mount designed for his rack.  I'm waiting for him to get back to me.

Those are the concerns I share.  I'll have to talk to Geo Explorer about his.

If you have a hep rack, just weld two wheel stud to your roof rack and bolt it down with two lug nut and a washer. I will post a pic of mine later

I think you will like that placement, easy to get to when you need it and out of the way when you don't need it.

That's pretty good, but I don't have the stinger. I'm a little worried about mounting low.

Off topic...Celt, I think it was your truck I spotted on NB 5 on Sunday. Maybe?

Hmm, maybe.  It was a dark color, it was lifted a lot, and it had an aftermarket front bumper, it was definitely your evil twin.
