It's getting to be that time of year again - time for the 5th Annual SCCX Fish Creek & Sandstone Canyon Apple Pie Extravaganza. (I didn't make that "extravaganza" name up, by the way. I think Marty came up with it a few years ago.)

Fish Creek and Sandstone Canyon - Anza Borrego Desert State Park

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

Meet Time / Spot: 10:00AM at the Anza Borrego Desert State Park Visitor Center
200 Palm Canyon Drive
Borrego Springs, CA 92004

Fish Creek is a little over 12 miles of mostly flat sandy wash, with lots of interesting geology along the way. Sandstone Canyon used to be another 2+ miles, very narrow and twisty in places, with high rock walls. Sandstone Canyon was blocked partway up by a large rock fall during the earthquake on Easter Sunday, so we won’t be able to drive as much of it as we have in the past. Depending on where we can park, we should be able to walk some of the more spectacular portions of it. There have been a lot of earthquakes out there since Easter Sunday, so you might not want to park too close to rock walls when we stop along the way. We'll come back out the same way, with maybe an optional detour through slightly rockier Loop Wash; total off-road miles should be about 25.

This trail should be stock friendly, but 4WD is strongly recommended due to soft sand and maybe some rocks if we take Loop Wash (optional, we don’t all have to do that), and so you don’t dig holes in the trail. We’ll be driving at a leisurely pace but you’ll be more comfortable with tires aired down, so a way to air back up is advised. We'll find a shady spot for lunch, and I’ll be stopping in Santa Ysabel on the way out there to pick up a few fresh apple pies for everyone to share.  We’ll find a place to take a little hike after lunch. Plan for all day.

For anyone who wants to camp, there are several options. The Fish Creek Primitive Camp is located 1.4 miles up Fish Creek from the start of the trail (which is at the end of Split Mountain Road 8 miles south of Ocotillo Wells). There is a vault toilet there, and marked spaces, but little else. I think they have fire rings. We'll pass right by there in both directions; if anyone wants to camp Friday night let me know in advance so we can meet up there in the morning as we pass by.  There are also many spots in Fish Creek that would be good, if they are not already taken. You can camp almost anywhere out there, just not right on a trail. Note that ground fires are not allowed in Anza Borrego DSP, you will need a metal container if you want an open fire.

If anyone coming from the San Diego area wants to caravan out there let me know in advance, and we can meet near my house (east of I-15 off Scripps Poway Parkway at Pomerado Road) ready to roll at 8:00AM. I'm allowing enough time for a stop at the Julian Pie Company bakery in Santa Ysabel to pick up some fresh apple pie to go with lunch. Depending on where you’re coming from, alternate caravan meet spots along the way could be Ramona and Santa Ysabel.

EDIT 11/9/10:  If anyone with 2WD is planning to attend, please call me and we can talk about what you can expect, and what we would expect from you.

For those who are new to SCCX, or have not been on this trip before, or have not been to Anza Borrego before, here's a bit more info. Also, if you have not yet read the Xcursion Guidelines, now might be a good time.

Xcursion Guidelines

- The meet spot is at the Anza Borrego State Park Visitor Center. If you have not been there before you may want to get there early and wander into the Center itself to take a quick look around, and pick up the free map/brochure that they have (or buy a guidebook and/or map, the proceeds go to a good cause). There are real rest rooms at the Visitor Center. After that it's the vault toilets at Fish Creek Primitive Camp, and then it’s rocks and bushes the rest of the way.  I'm hoping we can leave the Visitor Center fairly early this year, because it is a bit of a drive to the trail head. I would like to roll out of there by 10:30AM at the latest.

- The trail head at the end of Split Mountain Road is 28 miles from the Visitor Center, so it does take some time to get out there. We'll stop to air down at the trail head, and then head up Fish Creek about 12.5 miles before turning in to Sandstone Canyon. We'll make a few short stops in Fish Creek to check out the geology. There are some very interesting rock formations along the way.

- Because of the rock fall from the Easter Sunday earthquake we may not be able to get to our usual lunch spot in Sandstone Canyon. We’ll figure that out when we get there, unless I have time to get out there before to look around. We've done this run several times, and it's always pretty leisurely, with a long stop for lunch.

- No alcohol on the trail while driving or at the lunch stop. If you’re camping and want to have something after you’re done driving for the day, that’s fine.

- Anza Borrego is part of the California State Parks system. Possession of firearms is prohibited in California State Parks.

- Sandstone Canyon is a dead-end (now more so than ever), so we'll be coming out the same way we came in. Our afternoon hike may well be the route we used to drive. On foot or in a vehicle, either way it’s pretty spectacular.

- There is gas available in Borrego Springs, but there could be a line and prices could be high. This will be a very busy weekend.  If you plan to fill up there be sure to allow enough time to do so before getting to the meet spot.  If you're coming in via Hwy 79 from I-15 at Temecula it would be best to top off there. If coming from San Diego fill up at Ramona at the latest. Please don’t show up at the meet spot low on fuel.

- I plan to stop at the Julian Pie Company main bakery in Santa Ysabel when they open at 9:00AM. This is at the intersection of Hwy 78 and Hwy 79, it is not in the town of Julian. Going through Julian takes you well out of the way if headed towards the Visitor Center. The best way from Santa Ysabel to the Visitor Center is north on Hwy 79 to a right on S-2, then a left on S-22 through Ranchita (watch out for the Yeti) and down the Montezuma Grade into Borrego Springs.

- For those of us who are not camping it is quite possible we'll get back to Split Mountain Road after dark, or close to it. A flashlight or headlamp is nice to have when airing back up.

I realize that this may seem like a lot of rules, etc. Actually, this is a very fun, very scenic low-key run, but there are State Park Rangers that patrol out there, and we don’t like to have them get upset with us. If you don’t believe me, just ask Paul about that.

Yes - the rangers are very intense.

If a line of cars is coming at you at a high rate of speed in a wide open wash devoid of any vegetation you are apparently required to have a head on collision rather than yield a bit into the wash for on coming traffic.

Me and the wife or the brother in-law will be there but most likely just for Saturday. At least for now, but we will see as the date gets closer.

I will be there as well, probably just the day trip portion of the Xcursion.

At least one guest, possibly two more.  Frank, let me know, and I can help with some $$$ for the crusted treats.

Thanks for putting this run together.

John

Just got back to San Diego...looking forward to making a run.  I should know by the 15th if I can make this one.

I haven't been wheeling since January so I'm dying to get back out there.  I'll be at Corral Canyon on the 10th for the day though.

Actually, that link is to some pics from one of a couple of trips I made out there earlier this year, that one a week before the earthquake (I was also there earlier that same week, but with just my X, no other vehicles).  Here is a link to the pics from last year's Xcursion. It has pics from several different people in it.

Frank,  I won't be able to make this run as expected.  Sad

A personal obligation has come up (birthday) and I will have to excuse myself.

Heather and took a drive out to Sandstone Canyon today with some friends.  First the good news - we can get to our usual lunch spot. Now the better news - we can still drive through that really narrow deep channel section with the big rock right in the middle of the path. It's about 1/4 - 1/2 mile past the lunch spot.  For those who have not been out there since last November, I don't think this particular rock was there then.  It comes really close to blocking the path, but there is just enough room to get around it.  Now the bad news - at about 1.4 miles there are some really big rocks blocking the path - that's the new end of Sandstone Canyon. We've lost about a mile of driveable canyon. I could see where someone did try to drive through, and I imagine with the right vehicle, lots of skill, and maybe no regard for damage, you could do it. The turn-around point is about 13.6 miles from the start of the trail at the end of Split Mountain Road. It's a little tight, so if we have a large group we'll need to be careful and not get too packed in.

It was really nice out there today. A lot of sand has been washed down Fish Creek, and there were several new rock and mud falls that were not there in March. On the way back we took Loop Wash, and I think we'll do that again on the 20th.  It is definitely the "road less traveled" compared to Fish Creek, and very scenic.

We saw a black or night armor 2nd Gen Xterra parked about 10 miles up Fish Creek. Not sure if it's anyone here, but I did leave a flyer on the windshield.

I'll post some pictures up in the Pics section a bit later.
