First Aid Kits - What do you carry?
« on: December 27, 2015, 08:43:38 AM »
Just curious what all of the SCCX crew carry with them to help/aid in the event of a medical necessity.

I just received a new kit for Christmas, and was wondering what everyone stocks in their rig?

We had an incident with Danny Grooters on the Death Valley trip where he took a pretty good gash to his hand, and was able to get him patched up and cleaned up for the week.

So...what do you carry?

I have a basic Colman kit. Very nice and small in a prepackaged case. I also added a few goodies but this has what you need for basic first aid.

Basic stuff here, too. I just took the factory first aid kit and added a few items more suited for the type of first aid we're most likely to encounter on a trail run, which is physical trauma. (cuts/gashes, broken bones, etc.). So I have some large gauze bandages and tape, a portable on-demand ice pack, some steri strips, alcohol/cleaning solutions/neosporin, scissors for cutting clothing, and some ace bandages. I also threw some basic comfort-type first aid items in there - Benadryl, advil, pepto bismol chewables. And I threw a few survival type supplies in there too - a small life straw water filter, one of those foil emergency blankets, a lighter and some matches, etc. And finally, I added a Sawyer snake bite/insect sting kit, becaue that's also a major hazard for us while we're out and about in the desert, and being able to extract some of that venom in the middle of no where could be the difference between life and death, especially with kids.

When we get out of the rig to hike around (or any time we're going to be away from the rigs for a while), I usually just grab the entire first aid kit out of the rear hatch door and throw it into my back pack. Here's the snake bite kit I carry: http://www.rei.com/product/407144/sawyer-extractor-pump-kit?cm_mmc=cse_PLA_GOOG-_-4071440004&CAWELAID=120217890000833989&lsft=cm_mmc:cse_PLA_GOOG

I carry the basic stuff. The things I have some Coban, but the heat from sitting in my car really does a number on it. Can't go wrong with regular ace bandages. I also carry a lot of triangular bandages. I love their versatility. I have a couple of SAM splints and a syringe with no needle so I can generate a little but of pressure to flush cuts out with water.

Awesome gents...thank you.

Hopefully we can give folks a comprehensive load out so we can all be better prepared.

Here are some shots of the Coleman kit that I scored from Daphne...

Outside of kit

List of contents

Opened up

What I liked about Danny G's kit in Death Valley was its compact size (fit in a door panel or seat back pocket) and ability to dress a wound quickly.

Much like Joe, I will be supplementing this kit with some comfort over the counter aids, as well as adding some extra nitrile gloves for sticky situations.

Cold packs are new to my kits, what do you guys like and have experience with?

The small bag I carry is a basic kit of: X2 500Ml saline bags, 250 Ml Hespan, Epi-pens. X4 saline locks and lines, 4 tourniquets, lots of compressed gauze, 4x4's, X6 compression bandages aka Israeli bandages), cravats, bandaids, tape, shears etc X4 bags of Quick Clot combat gauze, Chest seals (Pneumothorax), Chest decompression needles, 4.0 silk, hemostats, X4 NPA's, PAM mask, SAM splint, BP cuff & Stethoscope, C-collar a ton of surgical gloves (non-latex) and a bunch of little other items like flashlights and chemlights.

The large bag is similar but much more expanded to include lots of snivel gear for the owies and booboo's. All of the families daypacks have a small grab and go first aid kit that's pretty darn comprehensive. I'm a big believer in carrying really good first aid bags and getting the training to use everything you have in the bag. I know it's not necessarily in the kit but having a good programmed HAM radio, fire starting materials, basic water supply, warm clothing and footwear is a small price to pay in room when you really need it. The last thing I want to have to do is be out in the middle of nowhere and have to make due should some become seriously injured.

Add in some bailing wire and you could survive a nuclear holocaust.
