Title: CANVAZ V Pre Plan Thread - See New Topic Stickie
Post by: Deadpilot on June 11, 2015, 03:00:49 PM
To make things easier for trail sign up and all the other important info I created a new thread. This one will have all the most updated info for trails and times and all that so its in one place as we get closer.
The date is Oct 10-12, 1st trail run will be on the 10th and if there is enough people who want to run all three days we can run till 12th or that can be the clean up and head out day just up to masses. There will may be a evening run if for those who want to use all those lights we buy ;)
People can roll up on the 9th to set up camp if they want.
For each run I am asking for a volunteer to be lead and trail preferably those with HAM's incase we have a large group that gets spread out too far for CB's and that know the trails.

Post up your suggestions for the trails and question and comments you may have.

For up to date CANVAZ V information, please visit this thread:  CANVAZ V Final Planning & Coordination (http://www.sccxterra.com/smf/index.php/topic,3311.0.html)

Sign me up for the Saturday (10/10/15) Blue Trail run. I have  HAM but am not really competent enough to lead, especially since I'm unfamiliar with the trails in the area. I can tail-gun if someone more experienced doesn't offer to.

I'm waiting to hear back to see if we have a leader for John bull. But I'm sure John bull will be a for sure run. What color is Dishpan?

We need some more  blue and green trail  ideas

So I must have been looking at the calendar wrong. Columbus day is the 12th which Monday. So I was off. So the days are gonna slide to right a day. 1st run will be sat the 10th and the last run will be on the 12th if there is enough interest.
People can still come out on Friday Oct 9th and set up camp or hotel.

I agree with labeling Gold Mountain as blue, but the trail is official rated black by the forest service:

Also known as 3N69, the Gold Mountain Trail heads up from Big Pine Flat Trail to the peak of Gold Mountain. This trail is rated "Most Difficult" by the Forest Service, and should only be attempted in high-clearance vehicles. There are several challenging rock gardens towards the top of the mountain. Part of the trail has a bypass known as 3N69A that is more difficult.

We are definitely interested in attending this; but we are waiting to sign up for trails until we know what will actually be on our rig.  Waiting for bumpers, skids, etc to show up.  If all goes according to plan, we should be able to handle Blue Trails and the Night Run.

No Black trails for us - no locker or other required setups.

I saw that it was officially rated as black but was told it's more like a blue trail. So that's why it's there. I never ran it before so I wouldn't know.

But it goes with out saying that ya sign up and run the trails at your own risk. Trail conditions can change at any time.

So with the fire up in BB area we will have to watch to see what trails get closed and stay closed due to fire damage.  With that said we will need some back up trails and or a back site.

hammer, I have taken stock Xterra through gold Mtn before. There are a two spot that they will have difficulty but with spotting and rock stacking they should get through.

As long as they have front and rear recovery points a positive attitude and not afraid of crazy rock noises they will be ok.

I would however strongly recommend rock sliders for the stock 1st gen.

For Saturday blue maybe rattle snake? I never ran it so someone will have to lead.

It has been more than ten years since I have run any of these trails.  But I do have CB and Ham and am very comfortable with being tailgunner on any blues or greens that you need.  My 2015 P4X doesn't have any suspension mods, but I do have a Lokka in the front, sliders, recovery points and will have a front winch by then.

We are very inclusive here jvr.  You are certainly welcome, and if you haven't already, please spend some time searching our site to get a feel for what you need, in order to be safe and happy ( food, water, spare, tools, etc.) on an outting.  Everyone is very helpful but self-sufficient at the same time.  You may want to tell us a little about yourself and you X in the mew members forum.  See ya on the trail.

Anyway, I can lead Clarks and/or Jacoby, and with a little help, Rattlesnake no problem.

My vote would be the "Sailor Jerry" run during the evening...... The only problem is it can go from green to double black in no time.

Sorry for not doing updates on this. But this is still happening there just isn't much to update at this time.
There may some trails drop due to lack of people being able to come but I've notice money is starting to get tight across the board for people so we will see if there any last minute adds

Has it been determined if this event is Friday through Sunday or Saturday through Monday?  I'm taking Friday and Monday off and ready to make it 4 days in the mountains.

My buddy that drives a Wrangler wants to come along, I just don't know what the organizer(s) want i.e. Nissan only event? I personally don't care if you drive a soap box with a Yugo motor in it as long as you want to go have some fun and the vehicle is capable. Hopefully I can get someone to chime in on this.

I asked that same question in the other thread before the official thread started, and received the response that all are welcome:

This may be a silly question, and please don't flame me for asking - but since this isn't an "officially sanctioned" event, are we ok with extending invites to family and friends with capable vehicles that aren't of the Nissan variety? Or do we prefer to limit this to just Frontiers and Xterras from the tri-state area?

Some "regulars" come to mind, including my cousin with his F-150 and Celt's dad with his Jeep.

This is for anyone. Trails will have "requirements" to make sure the odds of spending the night on the trail are reduced. But other than that, all is fair game.
We had a jeep on the trail with us last time.
I have a few Tacoma and Jeep buddies that might join us too.

Not sure if any of that has changed, but I was still planning on inviting my cousin.

Hey guys, Jason has a lot to handle here, especially since he can't make it :'(

To start with, is anybody (christiaan, maybe?) willing to wear the Camp Master hat, to organize the campers and forward a list for Jason to add to his front page?

Jason, How many 'NAVAZ' guys do we have comming so far?  Is there any talk on their websites, I'm embarassed that I don't even know there sites and have not checked.
If you or anyone here knows please chime in.

Lastly, I just got back from 'my honeymoon' and have been out of the loop, so if this post is out dated, my apologies :-*

Thank you Jason for taking on this PITA duty for our notaclub group ;)

Looks like I'm going to have to drop out of Toro's trail on the 10th due to family schedule. I'll be able to make it up there sometime Saturday afternoon. I'm still planning on leading John Bull on the 11th. Thus far it looks like myself and a buddy from work along with (Hopefully) Motorpig77. I was tossing around the idea of staying at Heart Bar campground. I stayed there about 2 years ago before I ran John Bull with Terry and Nick and Sergio and thought it was a real nice campground with room for all of our vehicles and tents etc. I know guys are running all sorts of trails and would love to meet up with the masses. What is the group consensus?

As of now, I plan on driving up the hill each day and staying at home instead of camping (it's only about an hour for me from home to Big Bear). This may change as we get closer to the event, but I'll wait to see how the arrangements for everyone are shaping up and make my decision based on that (if there's extra space, who is coming with me, etc.)

FYI:

Hanna Flat and Crab Flats are two popular CG's.

Crab Flat is far away from the main trails (west)...BUT, 3N16 runs right behind the CG, so an easy fire road connector to John Bull/Dishpan Springs etc.

Jacoby Cyn. and Gold Mountain are farther away (east), so Hanna Flat is a better CG for those.  You could hit Gold Mtn. and Jacoby Cyn. from 3N16, but you would need to plan for a bit of back roads drive time to make the trail heads.

And if anyone wants to take on making up stickers please let met know.

Sorry that I had I have to drop out from the run but theres no way Im getting my X done and ready for drive up there alone and then beating it up on the trails when I havent had time for a break in run. Just alittle too much for it even if I get it done by then.

So thus far there will be 3 (maybe) 4 on the John Bull. That's about the perfect number to run it. Can you tell me what he's equipped with i.e. HAM/CB front/rear lockers and winch. It's important to be able to know where to add them into the conga line.

I'm noticing that a lot of people who said they are coming aren't signed up for any of the runs. Not that it's really a big deal, but I was trying to decide what runs to do myself and looking at the lists isn't giving me a good size up of what's going down. Being my first CANVAZ event, I'll just ask - is it normally a pretty loose/casual event to the point that you just show up at the meet spot for a run in the morning if you want to do it? I just wouldn't want to see a trail leader have no one show up (for example: RBduffer is the only one signed up for the Rattlesnake Canyon run on Saturday so far), or have 38 rigs show up for another one.

As of now, it looks like I'm going to do a Saturday run (I'm currently signed up for Pontiac Sluice) and a Sunday run. My cousin who is coming with me is actually leaving for a cross country trip in his truck three days after this event, so he wants to take it easy and make sure he doesn't break anything. This means I might actually switch to a green run for Saturday.

It is a Green trail, so stock vehicle and novice skills should be sufficient.  How long it takes depends on how many we wind up with in the group and if there are any mechanical issues.  I would plan on bringing lunch along, especially with kids.

This is a green trail, but you need to be prepared.

Can you tell us a little about your Xterra?  (Year, modifications, tires?)

As far as the trail timing, it depends on the number of rigs tackling it.

A stock 4x4 "can" complete this trail...with good spotting...and if you air down to at least 18-20 lbs in all four tires.  Bring a tire gauge, and an alternative air source (air compressor) to air back up at the end of the trail.

This is an excellent trail, if you are prepared and have the appropriate expectations.

Sorry guys, I've been out of town again.  I had to smuggle Cubans (cigars not refugees) into Monaco for Prince Albert... or was it Herb Albert?
Anywho, typically we try to get a 'feel' for the interest in the trails that the trail masters have volunteered to run.  We will have a general meeting spot each morning to sort out the details.  If a Trail Master wishes they can have their own meeting spot if it helps logistically.
Night runs are handled similarly but even more loosely.  Find the trails you like, know who the TM is and follow this thread and you will be fine.  Stupid questions are the ones not asked...really stupid questions will be mocked ;)
Be sure to check out the CANAVAZ camping thread for any questions there.

I have a 2012 S 4x4 with 275/70R16 BFG All Terrain T/A KO Tires, front and rear tow points, minor hand tools, tow strap, tire gauge and cheap air compressor. I didn't think spotting and air down would be needed for a green trail?

Excellent...all of that should prepare you for Rattlesnake Canyon.

I didn't think spotting and air down would be needed for a green trail?

Well...90% of the trail can be run without spotters.  And this will be up to the trail leader as to how they run RC...but airing down is always a good idea when we wheel together as a group.

It improves your ride (main reason) and contact/traction patch across rocks/sand...of which RC is 100% comprised of.

Our goal as a group is to ensure that new peeps set the appropriate expectations for our Xcursions...and a trail leader running a Titan Swap with aftermarket coil overs and 35" tires might present a Green Trail a little differently than a trail leader running a stock Xterra.  We have many many folks that expected a completely guided tour (aka:  Jurassic Park) and others that arrive at the trail head with all the tools and knowledge appropriate to the run.

Some have run RC and considered it a milk run...while others have run it and lost step rails, mud flaps, and their minds in the process, never to return for another Xcursion.

You sound well prepared from your mods and tools mentioned..which is awesome.  8)

Looking forward to meeting you on the trial sometime... :)

Well done GeoYota!

JCX, this was my first trail with my stock rig.  It's a great trail with just 2 or 3 spots that will let you know how cool you X is.  Remove the sissy side steps and rear mud flaps or the trail might:D  Otherwise you sound good to go.  The trail loop should take about 5 hours.

These are all good questions, as I'm sure many others were wondering the same thing but are too shy.

Sunday we will have a 'very green' fire road, senic trail, that's 2-wheel friendly as well.

Look forward to meeting you and yours.

Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like a lot of fun. Please sign me up for Sat. RC run. At this point, I am pretty sure I can make it. BTW - No side steps and mud flaps were removed the day after I got the X home. Hope to meet all of you too.

If anyone is still updating the lists - I'm going to switch from the blue trail to the green trail for Saturday the 10th, due to my cousin not wanting to run a blue just before leaving town for a big trip. So myself in the X and my cousin in his F-150 will be running RBDuffer's Rattlesnake Canyon trip on the 10th, and the blue trail will need a new tail gunner for that day (looks like a lot of people are signed up for that run, so hopefully that's not an issue).

RBDuffer - is there a meet place and time yet for the Saturday Rattlesnake Canyon run? Also, what is your planned loop (just curious)? Are you thinking Hwy 18/247 from Big Bear down into Johnson Valley and then run Rattlesnake Canyon to 2N02 back up to Baldwin Lake?

Still not sure what I'm going to do for Sunday the 11th. My wife and I need to get back down the hill in the early afternoon to pick up our son, so I'm out for Gold Mountain due to time. Might just be Saturday for us as far as trail runs.

What time do you have to be down the Mtn?

I'd need to be back down in the Riverside area by 2:00 PM. By the time I break camp in the morning, I'll have 2.5-3 hours to run a trail and get on the main highway. Like I said, I'm leaning toward doing my own thing Sunday, maybe even just hanging around town with my wife. We don't get up to Big Bear often anyway.

Hey Joe, glad to have you guys.  And yes, the 18 to 247 to RSC to 2n02 loop.  My guess is the discovery center would be a good meet up spot at 10 or ?, so we can enjoy a good camp breakfast or for the folks that are driving up that morning.  I am always open to good ideas though.

I'll being doing the black trails on both days.  I got me some skid plates and I want to beat them up. >:D

You joining us on the JB the 11th? Only reason I ask is because the lists have become a little disjointed and I need to figure out who is going so I'm not herding cats the morning of the run. Please PM me your cell beforehand.

You know what?, maybe we should all just meet here, campers and day-trailers, just so nobody gets left behind.  Or for last minute info or changes.
Please pipe up with any comments or other suggestions gang.

That's a great meeting spot for folks that need last minute ice etc. The only thing I would offer up is since it appears the majority is staying at Hanna Flat campground it's a longer drive to go across the lake and into town then turn right around to go back north to the trails. At least for the trail I'm leading, I requested folks meet me at the Fawnskin Visitors Center/Ranger Station so we can get on the trail a little quicker.

yeah, I can definitely see that being a small issue, but it was more offered up as a general meet-up place....plus, there has been some shenanigans going on in that parking lot prior to runs....

I'm open to either day.  In the past everybody met at Vons then left from there.  It gave us a chance to meet everybody and load up supplies.
