Title: Any interest in Anza Borrego (17 Palms) Dec 18-19?
Post by: FrankB on November 21, 2010, 01:20:03 PM
I don't know if Paul or anyone else is planing a longer trip for the weekend of Dec 18-19, but I thought I would see what sort of interest there is in a trip to the 17 Palms Oasis, Pumpkin Patch, Vista de Malpais, and Font's Point area. This is an easy, stock friendly route that we generally end at Font's. If we time it right we can be at Font's Point for sunset, then drive out to road right after it gets dark.  It could be cold at night, but there are some nice spots to camp out there too (I'll probably make it a day trip for myself).  For people who want more of challenge, you could do Coyote Canyon, Calcite Mine etc on Sunday (or even break off from the group early on Saturday). The route does have some very deep soft sand in a few spots, especially in Short Wash, so 4WD is strongly recommended.

We've done this a few times in past years in December, and it's generally pretty nice out there.  You can see some pictures from previous December trips to this area here (http://frankbaiamonte.smugmug.com/So-Cal-Explorations-Day/Fonts-Point-Sunset-Dec-2007/), here (http://frankbaiamonte.smugmug.com/So-Cal-Explorations-Day/Northern-Washes-Anza-Borrego/),  here (http://frankbaiamonte.smugmug.com/So-Cal-Club-Xterra-SCCX/Xmas-in-Anza-Borrego-Dec-2007/),  and here (http://frankbaiamonte.smugmug.com/So-Cal-Club-Xterra-SCCX/17-Palms-Oasis-Fonts-Point-Dec/).  This trip is a lot like the one we just did to Sandstone, we spend a lot of time out of the trucks checking out the Oases (17 and 5 Palms) and the Pumpkin Patch, and some time checking out the views from both Vista de Malpais and Font's.

I'll most likely go regardless of whether or not we make it a club thing, but if there is interest I'll set it up here, or just contact me directly.

Dan, it has been a long time. Can you make down this way one of these weekends? You pick the date, we can figure out a way to make something work.

In that picture there's Bruce (Strikedistance) barely visible in front of you, and Sturndog and Marty (PacificaX) in my rearview mirror.  Here's another picture from that same run (Dec 2007) of your truck offroad.  Once everyone got over the initial shock that was a fun day.  Too bad about that fog light though.

Frank, I am interested too.

Don't beat me up too hard for missing the Sandstone Canyon please, I am distraught enough as it is missing out on all the great pie.  :)

I will check the boards but need to get out to the desert and would love the chance to wheel with the Anza Borrego Guru (thats you).

Frank-

This looks like a fun run.  I'm definitely in if I can get the day off.  I'll know for sure about a week before the run.

I will most likely be bringing the same crew with me from the Sandstone Canyon run.

Matt

Bring your wife along - this is an easy trail, we'll spend a lot of time out of the trucks exploring. There is a lot of cool stuff to see in that part of the Park.

I've closed this thread since I've started a thread in the Xcursion Forum for the run on DEc 18th.
