I am putting together a pheasant hunting trip to Helm, Ca on Nov 13-14, it is about 3 hours N. of Los Angeles. The place is Ace High Adventure Hunt club. This is a real nice hunting area with over 6000 acres to hunt, the cost is $140 which includes a BBQ lunch and 4 pheasants. The owner rases the pheasants and lets them loose for the hunters. I am reserving an area and he (Keith the owner) will guarantee 4 pheasants per hunter in our area - this is not like a lot of places where you can just hunt one little area, we will get a 10-20 acres maybe more depending on who many go. We already have one dog to spot and retrieve. If you are a newbe hunter - thats okay but you will have to go through my do's and don'ts speech and you will be on probation for the next hunt.
I am doing another hunt in Jan or Feb, the club gives about a 30% discount on a 2nd hunt for those that can make both. The 2nd hunt will be for pheasants, chuckers, and ? I also have a marked bird or 2 put out for a $$ pot shoot i.e. shoot it you win the $$!
It is a dry camp so bring what you need, I am heading up Friday Nov 12 and caravaning with a couple of others - leaving SJC about 3:30 or so - we have a campsite reserved so no worries there.
Anyone interested post up.

Thanks guys - ya been busy working, and entertaining my new gf. She has me doing a bunch of manly stuff like wine tastings and volunteering for charities. Broke my front dif on a Rugged Rocks Club ride so I am 2 wheelin it for now.
Kyle would love to have ya come along, you need an upland game stamp on your license - they check. I can set you up with anything else.
It's a bit of a drive but should be a bunch of fun, and a few pheasants for Thanksgiving are a nice touch ( I have a killer recipe).

Well I got an upland game stamp, a benelli and shells. Oh and a great attitude ! Lol
Thanks I will give you a solid answer soon. Thanks!
Well the diff is a major bummer! But glad to hear you're doing manly things!

Hey I'm out man! ??? ??? Sorry I ran it by my dad. My options were this hunt or training for my bird dog...unfortunately I had to choose the bird dog. So I can't make this the other hunt is more likely for me.
Sorry I'm really buming out about this. :-\

This sounded awesome. Sorry i'm so late replying. I am really interested in the spring hunt though. I'm originally from Texas and have property out there so i've been hunting deer, dove and boar since before I can remember. Never pheasant though.
Also, i've never really had to pay for hunting trips (and wouldn't like to when I have it for free at home) that's why I haven't gone hunting out here in CA yet. I've heard from many people that there is plenty of public land that is open as long as you have required licenses tags etc. BUT $140 doesn't seem too bad for a guided and guaranteed successful hunt. (I've seen ridiculously inflated guided hunts in the thousands of dollars)
So I guess my question regarding this is..... Is the $140 worth it for a good introduction into CA hunting or should I go the Public Lands route (and risk going on a trip and not even seeing a bird..lol)???

Hey andyman,
I grew up in Utah and Colorado and it seemed a bit of a stretch to pay to shoot farm raised birds at first. But that is all that is out here, and we go for the camaraderie and good times as much as the hunt. I go dove and Quail hunting occasionally and those birds are still petty easy to find without paying. I used to own an archery store and big game is more my passion, but wing shooting is still a bunch of fun!
I am going to post the results of the hunt and start a thread about another one I am planning in Jan or Feb. Hope you can join us next time!

Yep. I understand. I need to look into dove for next season (I believe it's past already) My favorite is dove though because there's so much action involved and it brings together everyone for a team hunt that actually relies a lot on communication.
If archery is your thing I can see why you prefer the big-game. (Silent killer perhaps?? lol)
I would LOVE to join you for a hunt around those months. I should have some money by then so i'll be looking for a thread on here.

. . . . If archery is your thing I can see why you prefer the big-game. (Silent killer perhaps?? lol) . . . .
Well, that and maybe because bagging doves with a bow and arrow might be a bit challenging for the average person. ;D
