Post by: FrankB on October 25, 2010, 09:45:34 PM
It's getting to be that time of year again - time for the 5th Annual SCCX Fish Creek & Sandstone Canyon Apple Pie Extravaganza. (I didn't make that "extravaganza" name up, by the way. I think Marty came up with it a few years ago.)

Fish Creek and Sandstone Canyon - Anza Borrego Desert State Park

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

Meet Time / Spot: 10:00AM at the Anza Borrego Desert State Park Visitor Center
200 Palm Canyon Drive
Borrego Springs, CA 92004

Fish Creek is a little over 12 miles of mostly flat sandy wash, with lots of interesting geology along the way. Sandstone Canyon used to be another 2+ miles, very narrow and twisty in places, with high rock walls. Sandstone Canyon was blocked partway up by a large rock fall during the earthquake on Easter Sunday, so we won

For those who are new to SCCX, or have not been on this trip before, or have not been to Anza Borrego before, here's a bit more info. Also, if you have not yet read the Xcursion Guidelines, now might be a good time.

Xcursion Guidelines (http://www.sccxterra.com/smf/index.php?PHPSESSID=jlvldvsde0l9gh5c95g3nnrje0&topic=212.0)

- The meet spot is at the Anza Borrego State Park Visitor Center. If you have not been there before you may want to get there early and wander into the Center itself to take a quick look around, and pick up the free map/brochure that they have (or buy a guidebook and/or map, the proceeds go to a good cause). There are real rest rooms at the Visitor Center. After that it's the vault toilets at Fish Creek Primitive Camp, and then it

Yes - the rangers are very intense.

If a line of cars is coming at you at a high rate of speed in a wide open wash devoid of any vegetation you are apparently required to have a head on collision rather than yield a bit into the wash for on coming traffic.

I will be there as well, probably just the day trip portion of the Xcursion.

At least one guest, possibly two more.  Frank, let me know, and I can help with some $$$ for the crusted treats.

Thanks for putting this run together.

Just got back to San Diego...looking forward to making a run.  I should know by the 15th if I can make this one.

I haven't been wheeling since January so I'm dying to get back out there.  I'll be at Corral Canyon on the 10th for the day though.

Actually, that link is to some pics from one of a couple of trips I made out there earlier this year, that one a week before the earthquake (I was also there earlier that same week, but with just my X, no other vehicles).  Here is a link to the pics from last year's Xcursion. It has pics from several different people in it.

Heather and took a drive out to Sandstone Canyon today with some friends.  First the good news - we can get to our usual lunch spot. Now the better news - we can still drive through that really narrow deep channel section with the big rock right in the middle of the path. It's about 1/4 - 1/2 mile past the lunch spot.  For those who have not been out there since last November, I don't think this particular rock was there then.  It comes really close to blocking the path, but there is just enough room to get around it.  Now the bad news - at about 1.4 miles there are some really big rocks blocking the path - that's the new end of Sandstone Canyon. We've lost about a mile of driveable canyon. I could see where someone did try to drive through, and I imagine with the right vehicle, lots of skill, and maybe no regard for damage, you could do it. The turn-around point is about 13.6 miles from the start of the trail at the end of Split Mountain Road. It's a little tight, so if we have a large group we'll need to be careful and not get too packed in.

It was really nice out there today. A lot of sand has been washed down Fish Creek, and there were several new rock and mud falls that were not there in March. On the way back we took Loop Wash, and I think we'll do that again on the 20th.  It is definitely the "road less traveled" compared to Fish Creek, and very scenic.

We saw a black or night armor 2nd Gen Xterra parked about 10 miles up Fish Creek. Not sure if it's anyone here, but I did leave a flyer on the windshield.

I'll post some pictures up in the Pics section a bit later.

Not sure what you mean by "chopped back" but this run is fine for a stock Xterra. There is nothing on this route that would require lift, armor, or even non-stock tires. There are a couple of rocky spots in Loop Wash, but just take them slow and you'll be fine.

Welcome to the club.

Frank...

Ya it's been a year now. Been doing a lot of camping/offroading trips but mostly just w/ my X filled w/ friends. Every time the Club had something I have been busy or didn't know about it.
Kate might come. And Dale IS coming. Maybe a few more too.

Oh and campers,

I will have firewood and a large 3x4 metal pan to make a fire on. Same one from last time if you were there.

If someone can bring a small iHome that is battery powered for some quiet tunes that'd be great!!!  (Stan are you coming?!!?!? I hope!!)

Anyone else bringing stuff that can be used as group camp gear so we don't have excess??

. . . . Anyone else bringing stuff that can be used as group camp gear so we don't have excess??

Given the fairly regular seismic activity out there (another 5 pt or so quake a few days ago) and the potential for more rockfalls and trail blockage at any time, I would think you would want some extra supplies.

This may be a really easy trail, but if you had been on the other side of the rockfall in the back of Sandstone Canyon on Easter Sunday it would have just gotten a whole lot more difficult. I could be overstating it, but think heavy-lift helicopter to retreive your truck. Or a few days of stacking rocks maybe. I went back and looked at the pictures on that Ford forum that were taken the same day - it looks a bit cleaner now but still pretty nasty.

Maybe I think about this stuff too much since I was out there twice in the few days leading up the rockfall, once by myself and once with a small group. It was only at the last minute that Heather and I decided not to go there on Easter.

Frank, I might be in for a day on this run and quite possibly for a 2 day. I also have a 20lb keg of gunpowder (Shotgun reloading powder) and some 20' wicks so we might be able to blast our way out  ;) . It has been a couple years since I have been able to join you all and would like to try and make at least one of these trips again.

What ever the cost we will pay it plus, what ever flavor pie you want is on us too for leading this trip. Also Paul and Noon since you so graciously lead us on excursions, a pie of your selection will be my treat too. Frank I will bring over 100 dollars cash to cover all of these pies, costs but I dont know if we ill make it to Julian Pie company but we will be at the trail center at 10 AM. Do you do Ebay/Paypal? If so give me your paypal email address and I will paypal you $100.00 this week and you can give me the change if there is any and if there isnt any I will pay the difference when we show up.

Is that cool with you?

Paul what would you like?

Mark,

These pies actually go a long way. Last year we had I think 12 trucks full of people, and maybe 3-4 pies, and a lot left over. Same thing the year before, but with 14-16 trucks.  Are you saying you want a couple of whole pies?

I'm pretty sure they don't have banana cream, and I don't have any way to keep one cold even if they did. I also have never seen blueberry, but they might have some with the larger blackberry type varieties I think.  The crumb crusts seem to hold up to the bouncing around the best, I generally get a mix of dutch apple, and some of the apple-berry or apple-peach combos, depending on what they have fresh. That weekend right before Thanksgiving is one of their busiest, so it gets really interesting in there on Saturday morning.

I don't have a clue as to how Paypal works, don't have it, never used it. Same for ebay.  My phone number is in the first post, call me if you want and we can figure out what it is that you are trying to say.

Paypal is just a way to xfer money between people. You can see how it works at Paypal.com.

I'll call you. An Apple/berry combo would be good then. Also one for you and Paul would be awesome too, my treat. I'll just bring the money on Sat. Morning to reimburse you.

Thanks for your help.

Mark, while I do appreciate the offer, to be honest I really don't want to try to get 7 or 8 pies and keep them intact. They are generally still warm when I get them, and you have to keep the lids open on the boxes. That makes them hard to pack. Also, and thanks again for the offer, but I don't need a whole pie to take home, and we don't even know if Paul is going to be there.

I really think that the best thing to do is that I will pick up the usual 3 or so pies (depending on what the count looks like towards the end of the week), and anyone who wants to contribute to the cost is welcome to help out. There is no need for you to pay for the whole thing.  As usual, I'll bring the paper plates and plastic forks.

I won't be camping, as I have things to do on Sunday.  It should be really nice out there if anyone does camp, and I think a few people talked about it.  You can ask here, or just bring your stuff work something out when you get there.

The only thing - if you plan to camp on Friday night, depending on where, you may find it easier to meet at the end of Split Mountain Road at the start of the Fish Creek trail.  If all goes even remotely according to plan we should hit there a bit after 11:00AM. The Visitor Center is 28 miles away, no sense in driving an extra 50-60 miles first thing in the morning.

Based on prior years my plan would be to get back to pavement at just about dusk.  That's the way it has worked out in the past. Days are short right now. The drive would not be all that difficult in the dark if you were alone, but that we might have a lot of trucks and it's pretty dusty out there. Those two things combined could make it a pain to drive out in the dark as visibility in the dust would suck.

The way it has worked for the last 4 years (plus a few other runs along the way) is that I stop at the Julian Pie Company main bakery in Santa Ysabel and pick up a few fresh apple (or similar, depending on what is available and looks good when I get there) pies, and we all share them.  If you want to contribute to the cost that is appreciated, but not required.  I am not taking orders for whole pies, that is way too much work for me to deal with.  These pies are pretty heavy, each one makes close to 8-10 slices.  We generally have some left over, and people can fight over who gets to take the leftovers.  I'll bring a stack of paper plates and plastic forks too.

Bring whatever else you want for lunch.

Anybody want to caravan out from San Diego?  I generally leave from the area of Scripps Poway Parkway near Pomerado Road around 0800.

Let me know if you want to meet up, and we can set a specific time and spot.

Alternate caravan meet spot would be the Julian Pie Company main bakery in Santa Ysabel (not in the town of Julian) at 0900.

Wooohooo! I love to watch fights! Now I see why there should't be too many pies: too much leftovers, not enough fighting :-[ (lol)

To those riding alone on Saturday: don't be sad, maybe it could get arranged to carpool with other lonely drivers.  Then, there could be fights over who is driving! hee hee

Any day use passes needed? Or any other type of permits?

No permits or day use passes needed for Anza Borrego Desert State Park.  There are, I believe, a couple of fee spots, but those are the improved campgrounds.

. . . .  maybe it could get arranged to carpool . . . .

If everyone who said they are going shows up this will be a pretty big group.  We may wind up having to find a larger lunch spot in Fish Creek and then go up Sandstone Canyon in smaller groups.  That turn-around spot at the rock fall is not all that big, and significantly smaller than the spot we used to end and turn at.  If prior years are any indication, we won't be the only ones out there either. This is generally a busy weekend in Anza Borrego.

Should be fun.  Weather is looking to be really mild.  For the campers, I think there is going to be lot of moonlight.

Alex, isn't that on the east side of I-15?  Also, just a suggestion, you might want to meet on Hwy 79 so that people don't have to get off and back on the freeway. There are lots of places on the righthand side of Hwy 79 once you get off I-15.  Just a thought - Might be a lot easier.

David, if you make it, can you bring the cross bars?  If you still have them.

Fred, are you going to be there?  It's been a long time.

Hi Frank!

It's unfortunate that I'm gonna miss this run. The turnout is usually pretty good just like in the past.

It's been waaay too long Frank! After Thanksgiving, I should be back with the club!

Just a friendly advisory, the weather seems like it's going to be pleasant with temperatures between 45%-68%. There's a slight chance of precipitation over the weekend  (about 10% as of today) in the area so please be mindful of low lying areas at risk for sand, mud and flash floods.

Other than that... have a blast everyone!

I was very surprised to find that the Fish Creek Wash is listed as a local road on the official California DOT government maps!  see the attached excerpt of the map; Am I wrong? Is this road or off-road? It is not rural, it is not urban; it's in the green area - but green area is not defined! So, what is it?
the web site where the map is located is http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/tsip/hseb/crs_maps/maplinks/17x/17x.pdf

Mark, there generally are spouses and kids along for this one, since it's an easy trail and as much a social gathering as it is an off-road trip (at least that's what it's been in the past).  I don't know for sure who else will have kids though.  We're not going to be climbing over any rock debris unless something happens while we're out there.  Rain?

See you in Santa Ysabel.

. . . .  Is this road or off-road? It is not rural, it is not urban; it's in the green area - but green area is not defined! So, what is it? . . . .

It's the middle of the desert, that's what it is.  The green on that map is probably the boundaries of Anza Borrego Desert State Park.  Don't let the color on the map fool you, there is not a lot of greenery out there.

Actually, Fish Creek Wash does show up on my Garmin maps, and is shown on all of the paper maps I have as well.  I think even Sandstone Canyon shows up on all my maps.  From the end of Split Mountain Road the route is unpaved.  It is generally an easy trail, probably rated 1 or 2 on scale of 1-10, with 10 being the most difficult.  I strongly suggest 4WD because of a few spots where there is soft sand right before some rocks, and 2WD tends to dig holes in that sort of situation.

A couple of years ago the first response to the Fish Creek run thread was something like "Why such an easy trail?". As in "why can't we go someplace challenging?".  Well, I happen to like this place, and since I'm setting it up, I get to choose where.  In the end, everyone said they had a great time, even though it was not at all challenging or technical.  Maybe they just said that because they didn't want to hurt my feelings.  Or, maybe driving though a slot canyon maybe 10 feet wide and 150 feet deep in places was pretty cool.  If you want to see what it looks like there is no shortage of pictures here and on my blog.

Since you brought up the question "is this road or off-road" I will take this opportunity to remind everyone that the rangers do take quite seriously the concept of staying on the trail.  Even though Fish Creek is pretty wide in places, this is not an OHV area, and we are expected to stay on the established trail, and not cut new tracks across the desert, even if only for a short distance.  Paul can tell you all about how I had to talk the ranger out of arresting him last time. (Okay, maybe not arrest, but he did threaten to cite him.) It was an interesting conversation (and thank you again to whoever it was who pointed me out to the ranger), and it may well have been just a combination of an inexperienced ranger and a lot of people out there.  In Paul's defense, I didn't think he had done anything wrong either.

Basically this will be a nice leisurely drive (with stops along the way) up a sandy Fish Creek Wash until we find a suitable lunch spot, then we'll go explore what is left of Sandstone Canyon.  We come back out the same way, with a detour through Loop Wash on the way back if it's not too late.

Frank, sorry for the misunderstanding, I am completely on your side, easy is good for us, that was not my point.  I was just surprised that a natural dead end wash , where the government doesn't have to do anything, and probably does not do anything (no signs, no maintenance, I don't know what else... ) gets to be claimed as a public road! And the key thing to a public road vs private road vs off road, is that a driver license is required on public roads.  I just hate the *** government and the idea to go somewhere where their rules are less numerous is just enchanting to me.  Yes, probably the green is the park, I was under no illusion that it would be in any way related to vegetation, of course not. I liked a bunch of your pictures from the various web sites; see you all on staurday.

Frank, it looks like you are absolutely right about staying on the trail and possibly encountering rangers: in the 3rd chapter of the "Anza-Borrego Desert SP General Plan"  ( http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=21314 and http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/21299/files/final--03plan.pdf ) the following information related to vehicles can be found:
"3.2.4.4 Backcountry Zone (BZ)

This zone provides the most freedom to the visitor, with fewer regulations governing camping.
Typically, vehicles are allowed to park adjacent to roads ([for some exceptions] see first paragraph of the Wilderness Zone

Nubex, you must be having trouble sleeping to voluntarily read the State Park General Plan.  ;D  That kind of stuff can be awfully boring.  I remember reading part of an older version once when I was trying to find information about old military usage of the area around Military Wash and Fault Wash, and it was painful to read. I guess reading anything written by lawyers who get paid by the minute is going to be painful.

Interesting about the one car width versus one car length - I was not aware of that exactly.  I think the main thing is to just be sensitive to the area, tread lightly, etc.

In any event, there is a lot of cool scenery out there, including some amazing geology. Several So Cal colleges bring field trips of geology students out there every year, we may see some on Saturday. It's interesting to listen to the professors.  We'll make a few stops along the route to check some of that out.

You guys should hit the left turn (coming from your direction) from Hwy 79 on to S-2 at about the same time I roll past there. I'll turn on my FRS when I get close to that intersection.  Don't forget to turn left on Montezuma Road (S-22) 5 miles later, as that is the most direct route to the Visitor Center.

Hey Frank, What time are you planning on getting to the trailhead?

Jake, I would like to say that we will be there by 11:00AM, but if the group is as big as it's starting to look, it may well be a bit later. It's easily a half-hour drive from the Visitor Center, and herding everyone out of there by 10:30AM could be tough. Realistically, we'll get there probably be closer to 11:30AM or so.  I would make the Visitor Center meet time earlier, but it is a long drive for many.

Send me your cell number, there is usually reception at the trail head and most of the roadways out there, we can talk in case we'll be late or there is a change of plans. My number is in the first post.

Where are you planning to camp on Friday?

If everyone who has said yes so far shows up, it looks to be about 20 trucks / 40 people.   It should make for quite a long lineup for a group picture.  I think the last time we this big of a group was Bradshaw Trail a couple of years ago, when I counted 21.  I think we had 14 Xterras and 2 Frontiers on this run 2 years ago.  Last year was about 12 or so.

So this is a yearly run? Does this club do monthly runs as well?

I just sort of made up that "5th Annual . . ." name (with a little help). It's just sort of evolved over the years, from an impromptu get together with 6 or 7 of us the Saturday after Thanksgiving in 2006, to a little bigger in 2007, to really big in 2008 and 2009. This thing has always been more of a social gathering than a trail run, except that we drive 12-14 miles of scenic desert to get to the lunch spot.

As a rule we've tried to do monthly runs, on the third weekend of the month. Over the last year or so that has not always happened, as peoples life situations have changed, and people have wandered in and out of the group. Runs have ranged from really easy to quite challenging, and everything in between.

By the way - nice photos on your website. You guys look like you do good work.  Where are you based?

REGARDING THE WEATHER

It's hard to say what it is actually going to be like out there tomorrow - the NWS is showing 50% chance of rain, and it looks like it could be quite windy.  The San Diego media looks like they're getting ready to trot out their "Storm of the Century" graphics - but they always seem to overhype stuff.

In any event, we are still on, of course.  If it looks like it is going to be too wet in Fish Creek then we'll think about going someplace else where we can find a nice spot for lunch. Who knows, maybe we'll just stretch some tarps over part of the lawn at the little park in the center of town. We can always spend some time checking out the various life-size steel sculptures of the prehistoric animals that used to live out there. They are pretty cool looking when wet.

If anyone is planning to meet us at other than the Visitor Center please be sure to check in with me by phone around 10:30AM so I can let you know if we change plans.

21 trucks really!?!

heck yeah

Had an amusing phone conversation with the ranger station in Anza Borrego this afternoon.

Me: Hi, a group of us are going to out to Fish Creek tomorrow, just wondering if there is anything new with the weather or other trail conditions we should know about?

Ranger: Nothing new, we did have another little earthquake, but no problems. . . Lots of earthquakes lately. . . Rain should not really be a problem . . . but  . . . . how big of a group?

Me: Oh, I don't know really. Probably not real big.

Ranger:  Not more than 25 trucks?

Me: Oh, I'm sure it won't be anywhere near that many. . . Thanks. Bye.

Who knew, apparently 25 is some sort of magic number out there when it comes to group size. This is the first I've heard of this.

more than 25 trucks should not be a problem: we would just tell the ranger that there are two groups that he's looking at :o; i hope there is no magic number when it comes to counting groups :-\

i'm glad to hear that the ranger thinks the rain will not be a problem: my wife was ready to bail out, but the kinds words of the ranger melted away her fear.
i say, more rain, more mud, more fun!
do we have a plan B?

Cool! I can't believe I've been an active member of ClubXterra.org since 2006 and this is the first I've heard of you guys. I'm really stoked to find a club in my area.

And thanks for the props on our work. We're based in LA but seem to be doing a lot of work on the East Coast these days.

Looks like we won't be able to make tomorrow, but hopefully the next one.

Personally, driving and sloshing around in mud does nothing for me. I've never understood why people like that, but that's just me. I'm not expecting a lot of water, but who knows. We make no representations as to anything when it comes to these runs. Trails change, weather happens, easy becomes difficult, whatever. We're just a a bunch of folks with a common interest getting together to go exploring. Ultimately it's your own responsibility for what you do or what happens to you.  All that said, it should be fun out there tomorrow.

As for a Plan B - I've got a few ideas if needed.

I've never driven in the mud, but I saw some clips online and the people playing in the mud seemed to have fun.  It made me not be so afraid of mud, especially when I'll be with an experienced group of some 20 X drivers.  Maybe it's not fun  :-[, who knows?

Nubex - I'm just messing with you since I don't know your real name (apparently it's classified or something).  And, I do have to admit that if I was driving someone else's truck (and didn't have to clean it after) I could have fun driving in mud.  Unfortunately, I still have bad flashbacks to that time Tom lead us through that really awful smelling muddy Vallecito Creek.  I think it took a week to get all the crap off truck (some of it stayed longer) and the smell seemed to linger on for about 2 weeks.

i was just thinking that i should wear a name badge/sticker today; otherwise, regarding the absence of the name online, i'm just afraid to have my name out in the cyberworld; it's a pretty irrational fear, i know, so what?
yes, my wife said the same thing about rain and mud: it just creates another thing to clean!

Mud or no mud, have fun out there today. I'm off to Hesperia to pick up a military trailer I bought off of Graig's List.

I hope you guys are having a fun and safe time today. Wish I could've come because I'd really like to meet some local X'ers, but for those of us who missed this one, we're having a run on 11/27 up Cleghorn off I-15 north of Rancho Cucamonga. I've missed every single run I tried to get to this year (new baby, new house, new business..... translation: "busy as hell and totally distracted"), so I'm excited about this one. All the rain should make the trail plenty fun!

Anyway, I'll meet you guys sooner or later I'm sure.

:)

Lucky.  What did you find?  M101 or M416?

After getting it home and doing some research it appears to be a 1948 Bantam T3-C. The C stands for civilian. It a cool trailer none the less and will be perfect for hauling my prospecting equipment. I will post some pictures soon.

I had a blast out there today.  The rock slides were interesting, the pie was tasty, the night run through the desert to the calcite mine was wicked cool.  Thanks to everyone who showed up to make it one of the best days ever!

I had a great time today, thanks to everyone who showed up. I got to see some old friends and meet some new ones.  The weather was perfect, with great skies for photos.  We even stopped to check out some art (sabre tooth tigers and horses). We left the Visitor Center with 9 Xterras, and 2 more showed up later in the day.

The full moon was rising as I was driving home. I stopped to get some shots of the moon over the desert at Buttes Pass Road, then took off out 78 to S-2.  As I was driving on S-2 I looked over the left and saw something I've never seen before, or even heard of - a rainbow produced by the light of the moon. To my eyes it looked pretty much white, but you could clearly see the entire arch. I stopped a couple of times to try to get a photo. It was raining and really windy. The first attempt didn't work at all, the second one it was barely visible, but when I lightened it up a bit on the computer you tell it really was a rainbow, and even see a bit of color. I'll try to put up a picture of it.

I'm thinking of 17 Palms Oasis and the sandy washes between there and Font's Point for December. That makes for a nice day trip, with the possibility of a great sunset view from Font's.

That was an amazing run, thanks Frank for leading and showing us the canyon (and the pie!).  It was great meeting everyone.
Flying through Ocotillo Wells was wild fun, and Calcite was just an awesome trail (minus my wheelspin!). A rear locker is going onto the future mod list.
