Good suggestion Don.  I like that area.  Makes for a fun day.  I'm going to try and make it.  I think I'll be up in your neck of the woods Friday evening so maybe we can coordinate a convoy.  I need to get my CB reired but I have the ham.

Hi Jeff. We are going up Thursday night and spending 3 nights at a bed and breakfast. We are going to do our idea of a triathlon. Fri.: Trail running. Sat.: 4 wheeling. Sun.: Mountain biking. I don't have a CB just the FRS and Ham. Hope you can make it.
PS: If anyone wants my cell # PM me.

Thanks for the reminder.  Almost forgot.  I think I'll pick up a year pass since they're only $30 and it'll encourage me to join more Xcursions.

Here's some information on the Adventure Pass:http://bigbear.us/adventurepass.html
You can get them from places like: Turners, Sport Chalet, REI, etc.
As far as a cheap hotel. I would check websites like hotels.com
I don't know where you are coming from but, the drive up and down is very easy in the summer. It is exactly 2 hours from our house and we go all the time just for the day to run or mountain bike.
Hope to see you there.

Anytime you go up into the mountains, whether its the San bernardino, San Gorgonio, or Angeles National Forest, you have to buy a Wilderness Pass.  They are $5 day/$30 year and if you buy a second year pass, it's only $5 for the second one.  They are needed if you use any of the public facilities, park there and help maintain roads.

If you don't find a cheap enough motel you can camp for free at a yellow post site.

You still need an Adventure Pass for the yellow post campsite. Basically it's a clearing with a fire pit and a picnic bench.  I just went in July and stayed at #7 I think it was. I really liked that spot. Nice valley, could of large boulders to block wind. A little close to the main dirt road, but not much traffic.

There are YP sites scattered throughout the area.  Best thing to do is probably go to the Big Bear Discovery Center and talk to a ranger.  They should be able to point some out for you.  Finding one on a Saturday could be tough though.  They are first come first serve and go fast in the summer.

$56.99 per night at Motel 6 if you want amenities. Although I really like the Yellow Post sites now that I know what they are. Great idea!

"Yellow Post Camping is remote camping at designated sites. A flat area has been cleared and a picnic table and fire ring are provided. These campsites offer a truly deep-woods experience and campers need to work with a

Well, we survived another Xcursion. What a great trip, it was nice to see old friends and meet new ones. We had 9 trucks show up: Goldfish, BlackX, Bouncy1, Alex, HellerX, MurphyX, Grizzly, GitarboyX, & SteevO, with a total of 14 people. We were on the trail by 11:00am we made a couple of geocache stops along the way. We then came to a fork in the road were they had to decide, do I go the challenging way or the easy way. Needless to say, everyone was up for the challenge. About midway through we came across a slightly bigger challenge. It was a boulder strewn downhill section that was not bad if you were equipped with sliders and skid plates. For those who weren't, there were some tense moments. Thanks to Steven and his expert spotting skills, everyone made it through. After that it was smooth sailing to the Rose Mine where we stopped for lunch and conversation. After lunch some of the group split off to go home while the rest of us went on to find the Hole In Wall Mine. This was a cool find as we were able to go in about 50' or more. After that we headed back to town and stopped at Maggios for some Italian food and cold ones. Thanks to everyone for making it a great day. Pictures will be posted soon.

What a good day! Don, Thanks for putting this run together.
It was good to meet you all and wheel with you.
We'll have to do it again. There was some good driving and we all made it out with only a scratch or two. I don't get to browse all the boards to keep in the loop on the upcoming runs so if you ever need an extra spotter or need a guinea pig to send into obstacles first, please pm or e-mail me. (pms have e-mail notifications on)
I'll catch you guys on the next on.

Great run! Being fairly stock and 2WD, I had a good challenge getting through some of the sections. Steve and Lee, thanks for spotting me and giving me a tug up Tip Top Road. I learned a lot from this trip. It was good talking with everyone at lunch. Don, thanks for setting it up (and the Corona as well; I realized afterwards that it was probably one of your personal ones, doh!).
I snapped a few pics that should be up tonight.
