Title: SCCX Xcursion ideas
Post by: Soylent Yellow on September 22, 2008, 04:20:42 PM
Since we are starting fresh and new lets get some ideas for future runs going right now.  I know we have some traditions but we still have room for other runs.  I think we should mix it up and come up with something new.

Some of the old stand-bys are:

1.  Rattlesnake Canyon
2.  Mojave Road
3.  Red Canyon/Red Cloud Mine/Bradshaw Trail

Some new ideas are:

1.   Berdoo Canyon and Pinkham/Thermal Canyon night run
2.   Idywild, Camp by the cows in the mountains by Palm Springs Run
3.   Boran Mines/Bristlecones Pines trip
4.   Lake Isabella Sherman Pass
5.   Big Bear-Gold Mtn, Holcomb Jeep Trail, Jacoby
6.   Truckhaven/Cal. Mine
7.   Spend a long weekend at Pismo
8.   Mount Laguna/Julian region through Kitchen Creek
9.   Palomar Divide Truck Trail / High Point Lookout
10. Salton Sea
11. Chariot, Orriflame & Rodriguez Canyon Loop
12. Van Dusen (?)

There's a whole year right there.  Any other ideas?

1) Big Bear-Gold Mtn, Holcomb Jeep Trail, Jacoby
2) Truckhaven/Cal. Mine
3) Spend a long weekend at Pismo

Idyllwild sounds like a great idea!

But locally in SD, I still want to explore Mount Laguna/Julian region thru Kitchen Creek or wherever is best.

...and Salton Sea!

I'm going to try and run John Bull on the 11th if any of you want to join.  I've got to finish the front DS and then fully test out the SAS.

Here are a few ideas for the coming year, now that it should be cooling soon in the desert:

Joshua Tree: 2 years ago we went in from the north, through Gold Crown and Old Dale mining districts, and found a great campsite up there. Last year we went in from the south, through Thermal and Pinkham Canyons, and camped near Black Eagle Mine.  For this coming year we could go in through Thermal & Pinkham, but then head north up Old Dale Road and see if we can find that camp site from November '06. That would make Saturday a stock-friendly day, then on Sunday those who want a bit more challenging stuff can head up into the mining district and out to Hwy 62. I think there was also a good trail for a night run from the campsite. Others of us can head into the Park on Sunday, I would like to tour that ranch house, maybe stop by the Integratron as well.  November would be a nice time for this.

Bradshaw Trail: The route we took in early '06 worked out well, and the campsite was great. For those that want something exciting there is the sunset run up the Goat Path of Doom and back down to camp.  March was a nice time of year out there.

Anza Borrego: I'll be setting up several day trips out to ABSP like the ones we did last year. These will mostly be stock-friendly, some even 2WD friendly, and include hikes and apple-pie lunches.  These would be in addition to the regular monthly club runs. Some of my favorite spots out there are Sandstone Canyon, 17 Palms Oasis and the washes just south of S22, Blair Valley and the hike to the crazy poet's house, and Grapevine Canyon. I would also like to set up an overnight or two out there as well.

Palomar Divide Truck Trail / High Point Lookout: This could be a day trip, weather permitting. There might be some snow up there too.

Salton Sea:  TilapiaFest II will be a mostly paved road adventure, stopping in such scenic locales as the North Shore Yacht Club, Bombay Beach, Slab City, Salvation Mountain, the Bat Caves and more. Most of that stuff is on the east side, we may want to do a bit more exploring on the west side as well. Lots of photo ops on this one.  Plan for a full day, and bring a lunch, as we will not, under any circumstances, be eating the tilapia.

Chariot, Orriflame & Rodriguez Canyon Loop: This one starts and ends at the Banner Store, off Hwy 78, and makes a nice day trip. The area was burned badly in the last round of fires, so it's hard to say what it will be like now. Chariot and Orriflame were stock friendly, but you'll be glad you have sliders on Rodriguez.

Rattlesnake Canyon: We should definitely do this one again. I like the idea of going all the way up to Big Bear instead of turning down Burns Canyon.

Welcome to the club Dan and thanks for your generous offer.  We have a few members who seem to spend a lot of time in your neck of the woods.

Oh... and by the way, when Nissan Still used to sponsor the Xterra Triathlon Championships, while we were in Big Bear, we took this one easy route via Van Dusen which led to several campsites, really scenic 2wd friendly trail and... really scenic trail!

Tried to re-visit last February but to no avail. Apparently they close the dirt path due to unforgiving snow conditions. I was bummed! So I just played around the 1/4 stretch of dirt and snow before the gate.

Um.... yeah... that's about it.

I don't know.  I am not available this month and next month is not looking too good either.  I can suggest one thing for this month.  There is going to be a West Coast meet on Johnson Valley the 24th throught the 26th.  This is outside our normal monthly runs but it sounds like a great opportunity to meet some new people with people coming from Northern California and Arizona.  It wouldn't be right for none of us to show up. I really wanted to go to this but it looks like I'll probably be recovering from surgery.  So it's up to you guys.

As it looks now yes I will be. I am negotiating for orders here again. If I have to live with the military I must have some fun. I have decided to make the carreer choice with the market the way it is and some finacial obligations.

The house is good Mitch. We came out pretty good. I never seen it that bad before and I have weathered serveral huricanes. Currently there are still over 400 people missing and they were finding bodies while I was there, two more on Sunday. So when they say evacuate, do it. They had sailboats on the side of the freeway, while some building completely gone. Some people lost everything including the house foundation. I got some winds and flood issues but I did what I could for now.

I am looking forward to getting a tire offroad. Gas prices dropping this is perfect.

Yeah the meet this month looks intresting.

We should start tossing ideas around for Nov, how about something down south like Anza?

I am hoping to be up for November.  But probably something mild.  Anza sounds good.

Post by: FrankB on October 10, 2008, 06:40:22 PM
I was planning to set up at least one Anza Borrego run in November, we can make that the monthly club run or do it in addition. I like Fish Creek and Sandstone Canyon for a day trip.  It is a mild run, but there are some opportunities to play around a bit in Fish Creek if someone wants to (just try to tread lightly etc). Last year Tom and Eric found some spots to go fast in, and some rocks to play on. The best spots for that would be the 8 miles or so between the Anticline and the mouth of Sandstone Canyon. Also, as of last year (unless it has changed again) there is that exposed rock that now makes the last bit of Sandstone only accessible to those with aftermarket bumpers and lift.

If anyone wants to, another option would be to split the group, with those who want more of a challenge going through either Diablo Drop-Off or Pinyon Mountain Squeeze, and then all meeting up in Sandstone Canyon mid-afternoon for lunch. That group may need to get an earlier start though, in order to get to Sandstone before all the apple pie is consumed.

I'm busy the weekend of the 8th, but otherwise should be available. I can lead Fish Creek / Sandstone Canyon.

Sounds good to me. I'd love to throw in Calicite Mine rd as an option too. Thats also near the palm oasis we went to, truckheaven, and fonts point.

If I can put in my 2-cents:  Reminder that there is the small matter of the Rattlesnake/Big Bear Trail-run on Dec. 27.

Also want to suggest that there is an ORV dedicated trail in the Azusa Canyon with a Staging area about 10 miles north of the 210 Fwy just west of the 57 Fwy off Azusa Ave.  I've passed by it in the past and have noticed other Offroad groups running from the Staging area but have never personally run there.  There are actually several fire trails and campsites in the area throughout as well.

I've heard that there is an easy trail and an advanced trail but since I haven't ran it, don't quote me.  Anybody more familiar with the area?

Can we start posting up the usual trips that SCCX takes every month to show where we are headed to from now until Dec. 2009? One for June, one for July, one for August, etc.?

Is there any more info about this area, I used to run through these mountains with my buddy on a road bike but never knew there were any offroad trails.

:-\ I HAVE AN 03 X 4X2 can I come to one of the trips???? ???

Many of the trips we do require 4x4, but we do have a few each year that are suitable for a 4x2.  A good example of a trail that is suitable for 4x2 but has great scenery is Blair Valley in Anza Borrego. There are lots of fire roads and trails around So Cal that you can do in a 4x2.  Where are you located?

Keep an eye on the Xcursions Forum for upcoming runs, and if it's not clear in the run description just ask.

I love that trail! One of the hidden gems in San Diego county. It's actually a rather difficult trail due to deep ruts and slippery surfaces. Even though it's not that long, it's challenging to get up to the Pancake Rock and you are rewarded with an awesome view. Only a 40min drive from downtown San Diego.
Let's plan a trip soon for this.

Would anyone be interested in a northern Mojave trail/camping run? Say, Cal City to the Randsburg, or a trip through Red Rock Canyon?

Guns and alcohol(used separately) would be welcome!

I am currently planning a trip from Death Valley to Vegas. From 4/19 to 4 /21. One night camping. One night hotel and back the next night. So far we have 8 confirm. We will likely have two groups. A go fast and a slow group.

If you are interested let me know and I will keep you in the loop once we have the course mapped.

Cheers,
Spencer

Cerro Gordo! (Swansea Cerro Gordo Trail)
This is a moderate to aggressive 33 mile off-road trail that starts just past the town of Keeler, on the East side of Owens Lake (roughly opposite Lone Pine and Mt. Whitney) and winds its way up through some narrow canyons, forest, and along a mountain ridge.  There is an old salt line trestle along the ridge that is a great place to stop for lunch.  The trail then winds further North along the White Mountains to the old silver mining ghost town of Cerro Gordo.  There, you will find a caretaker who can show you around and even offer a room for the night in one of 2 historic inns.  From Cerro, it's a simple gravel road back down the mountain to state road 190, and then to I-395.  Could be done as a longer day run or an overnight, staying in Cerro, or in one of the towns such as Lone Pine or Ridgecrest.

I did this about 6 weeks ago and we had an absolute BLAST doing it.  With the recent snow, it's probably worth waiting a few weeks, since the upper parts of the trail can be impassable at times.  A stock X could probably make it, but a lift and skids will help with the first portion (steep rocky climbs).  Recovery gear (front & rear points) and solid tires, are definitely recommended.  Lockers are nice to have, but I did this trail in a nearly stock Jeep Liberty (1.5" lift & A/T shoes) and had an absolute blast.  Another guy in our group had a Lexus on nearly bald tires and he made it without needing to get pulled out.  I'm really keen to take the X once it's lifted (parts on order...)

Any interest around April or May timeframe?  I can check trail conditions ahead of time since I am close by.  Should be improving as we trend toward spring.

***THIS IS A FEELER, I WILL POST A THREAD ABOUT THIS IF AN ACTUAL RUN IS IN THE WORKS***

OK, so it took me longer than a week, but what about a Swansea-Cerro Gordo run the weekend of 11 May?

Again, this is a feeler, so PM me or reply to the thread with interest.  I haven't seen any trail runs in the works for May yet, so maybe this could be a good time to meet n' greet and get a trail run in May?

Couple of suggestions for you guys:

Calico: there a lot of trails there from stock friendly to "Oh my god, why am I doing this"
Death Valley
Anza Borrego: again, there a lot of different skill level trails there
The Bishop area; Research it. Lots of fun trails and GREAT scenery. Check out the Buttermilk area....
Last Chance Canyon/Nightmare Gulch
Joshua Tree: Going in through Berdoo Canyon and out through Brooklyn Mine
Upper Lytle Creek Ridge Trail/Cleghorn/Big Pine Flat Trails. Camp in Coldwater Canyon
Bradshaw Trail

A GREAT reference for trails in SoCal isBackcountry Adventures Southern California trail book
