Trying to gauge interest for camping trip out to the Goat Canyon Trestle
What about weekend of Dec 9-10, go out Saturday and get some dirt on the trucks, then camp and Sunday morning those that want to can join on bike ride through the tunnels to the trestle. There are plenty of off-road trails in the area, those not interested in biking can always hang at camp and/or find another trail to flex the suspension a wee bit.
Other suggestions for dates? For me personally, if not 12/9 then January of February next year.
-
I think Dec 9/10 sounds great to me. I'll pass on the bike riding and can hang out in camp or go wheeling with others if they want to.
-
I'm in for camping and the bike ride 8) Full disclosure: my riding skill level is extremely amateur rookie green level :o But I have a hard-tailed Specialized Hard Rock, and I need to get the tires dirty anyway. As long as you guys don't mind me huffing and puffing along trying to keep up.
-
Interested
And I see some able friends to pull me out since 2wd
-
Sounds good, and thanks for the invite, but, too far away for me.
-
Very interested
-
If I was closer I'd be down.
-

You guys need to wake up earlier or post a run in Orange County ;)
-
I'm interested. Won't know schedule till two weeks prior. And I usually don't get weekends off
-
Might be up for this. Have always wanted to hike/bike this area.
-
You guys need to wake up earlier or post a run in Orange County ;)
Long Beach is faaaaaaaar from most of the runs down in SD County. :'(
-
If you know of any good off-roading trails in the Long Beach area, post up a run. As RBDuffer says - if you host it, they will come (at least, I think he said that. Maybe he just implied it. I don't really remember anymore). :o I kid, I kid. I know there isn't much to do in the LA basin. I'm fortunate to live closer to most of the fun spots related to this hobby, but it's still a pretty long haul to get to some of the better places.
On a serious note though - this is an overnight trip. Shouldn't really matter that much that it's an extra hour and 15 minutes of driving each way for you than it is for me
-
Is this still a go ??
-
interested if its still a go
-
Hey sorry guys, life happened and I will not be able to do this run
-
I am still a go for this.
-
I'm now booked on the 9th , but could do the 10th
or being of New year ??
-
I would down to check this out in January
-
What does everyone's January look like? I'm good for any weekend.
-
The weekend of Jan 13th or 27th are best for me. I could probably make it work on other weekends though.
-
Any weekend but , the Mojave Rd
-
Totally forgot aboot Mojave rd, so the 13-14 is out. 27-28 works for me.
-
Sounds like the 27th is it. That will give the Mojave rd folks a couple weeks to recover. Hope everyone is having a good Christmas.
-
I really wish I could go with you guys but after the Mojave Rd, I'll be limited to mid-week wheeling for a few months.
-
Sounds like a great opportunity to use my new drone for some epic shots. The 27th and 28th of Jan works for me, count me in still.
Just so I'm clear on the timeline - are you thinking meet the morning of the 27th, ride to the bridge, ride back, camp for the night, and head home on the 28th?
-
We could do that or meet out there on the 27th. camp the night and get an early start on the 28th riding the rails. then everyone heads home after. The rails is a few hours at most so you won't be getting home late.
-
That works for me
-
Just saw the date change. I can make those dates. I bike everywhere around town but currently don't have a trail bike. If I can scrounge one up, I'm in. Anyone have a loaner?
G.B.H.
-
Well so much for that, my girl now works Saturday,
if I can get a Babysitter , I'm still a go for Sunday
-
As this trip approaches, I'm starting to get a bit nervous. I know that most of you guys are seasoned MTB folks, and I'm not even a rookie. I'd hate to be "that guy" who derails this trip or makes it not fun for the remainder of the group. So any advice or help you can give me now will be very beneficial. Here are my main concerns:
1) I am not familiar with the kinds of supplies or equipment I need to have on me when riding. The research I've done shows this is about a 14 mile round-trip ride, does that sound correct? I literally have nothing but a bike and a helmet. If someone can give me some pointers about what to bring with me, that would be great. I do own a hydration backpack that I will bring, but what about bike repair supplies? Should I bring an extra tube? Extra tire? Extra chain? I have some basic tools I can bring (multi-tool, etc.), but don't really own any bicycle specific tools (for chains, tires, etc.). The previous owner did have a small pump which he left on the bike for me, so I guess I do own that as far as tools. I'm ok with buying whatever I need, I just need to know what I need. :P
2) I'm horribly out of shape, and I haven't done any more than riding my bike around the neighborhood within the past couple of years. And I haven't been on it AT ALL within the past 4 months. I've been trying to get on it and get some riding done so I can be confident in my endurance again, but long days at work and cold, dark evenings have put a damper on those plans. I guess I just need some reassurance that I won't be the guy who's holding up the group or making this trip a real bummer for everyone. If it's more of an advanced group or advanced ride, I'm perfectly fine with being told it's not for me. Just let me know that now so I don't make it a bad day for everyone. If you guys are ok with me being the fat guy that never rides who is tagging along and making you all wait for me, then so be it.
My bike is a Specialized Hard Rock, I'm pretty sure it's a 2000 year model (it looks exactly like this one: https://www.bicyclebluebook.com/searchlistingdetail.aspx?id=45643).
-
Bring an extra tube or 2 for your tire size, water and snacks.
I wouldn't worry about tools, I have tire levers and a bike specific multitool that I always have with me.
I would say this ride is pretty easy since it's a very small grade or flat going to the bridge, going back is even easier cause it's downhill.
-
Thanks for the reassurance Jordan. I'll get some tubes and maybe learn a thing or two about what tools to buy from you. Everything I've read says it's a super easy ride, but all those reviews are coming from people who ride regularly, which is not me. I did see one article that said you could do almost the entire thing on a beach cruiser, so I guess I'll be ok.

Joe...how tall are you?
I'm not making this trip, just too much going on. However, I'd be willing to loan you my Specialized Stumpjumper FSR (full suspension) rig for the weekend, which would make your ride much more manageable. It fits riders from 5'9 to 6'1 tall.
It runs tubeless tires, so that limits your risk of flats as it is a self sealing style of wheelset when it comes to punctures. Since I'm not rolling with this trip, I'd also be willing to loan you my Dakine 3L hydration pack, that is already styled with an extra tube and tools to fix stuff.
We would need to swap your pedals off of your bikes, as mine sports clipless Shimano style pedals. That's easy, I have a pedal wrench at my house...we could set up a time to swap pedals/bikes before the trip.
We are back in town next Monday, text me if your interested and we can set up a meet time.
You would want comfortable riding shorts, a pair of gloves, sunscreen, and possibly some CLIF bars for the ride.
Anything else I'm missing Jordan?
-
That's a very generous offer JT. I'll shoot you a text next week when you're back in town and we can plan some time for me to stop by. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't terrified of damaging your bike in some way, as I'm sure it costs much more than an entire paycheck or two of mine. But I'd like to at the very least pick your brain about the topic in general. Like I said, I just want to make sure I don't turn into "that guy." Everyone in this group is all too familiar with the people who have never been camping or offroading in their life, and show up at the trailhead with no supplies or gear, and expect the rest of us to be their general store and give them every lesson they need to be an expert by the end of the day. I'm excited to do this trip, because it seems like a great opportunity to participate in an easy and fun ride with a few experts that might get me more into the sport. But I want to make sure I'm doing it right.

Cool Joe...let's chat. If I haven't broken it yet, you'll certainly have a tough time crossing that line.
We are back on Sunday, I'll shoot you a text on Monday/Tuesday. If I forget, hit me up.
-
I just now looked at Joe's bike and agree John's FS bike would make a much more enjoyable day vs a full rigid bike.
Oh I did forget riding shorts, honestly a set of padded liner riding shorts will go a long way to making your butt less sore after the ride, I'm not going to tell you it will eliminate it cause you haven't ridden much but it will make it better. They can be pricey but there are reasonable(sub $50) options available. You can get shorts that include a padded liner or just the padded liner and wear a pair of shorts you already own.
-
Where is the meet spot that Sunday ??
-
we could meet you at the water tower sunday morning.
https://goo.gl/maps/kEob2yga6Nx
We will most likely be camped out just south of there somewhere.
-
I found a bike. Not the greatest and a tad too small but it will do. I'm heading out to the desert Thursday for a hiking driving camp trip. Head home Friday night. If all goes well I'll be able to head back out Saturday. Always wanted to see the trestle. Never thought about doing it by bike. Great Idea.

A few things:
1) I was reminded of a prior engagement on Saturday night (work party), so I'm out for camping. But I'm still in for the ride on Sunday, and I'll just meet at the same water tower as Jayrat. Just let me know when you finalize a time.
2) I may have talked Toro into coming on the ride as well, but I think he needs just a little more persuasion. Jordan- you should hit him up and seal the deal. :)
3) I have a very small case for my drone that will fit into my hydration pack, and will be bringing it along to capture some epic photos and video of the bridge (and our group at the bridge), if that's ok with you guys.
-
Well I guess since we are getting close lets get a headcount, I am in for saturday night camping.
looking through the thread, it looks like we have:

That works for me , I might even make it out for camping but later Saturday
-
10:00 am works for me too.
-
I'm in for Saturday! Just came in from the garage after working on the loaner bike. It was left in the rain. The chain was crunchy and bent at odd angles. Swapped on some decent tires too and I think It'll work just fine.
Looking forward to my first trip out to the trestle and first trip with the "club".

What time are we meeting at the camp on Saturday ??
-
I'd be down to head out earlier in the day and do a trail or something before heading to the camp spot.
-
I had some things come up for saturday morning so I was planning on going out probably in the afternoon on Saturday. do we want to meetup around 4pm around the water tower?

Do you want to Convoy?? I'm probably be leaving SD closer to 3:00 pm ish

Yea I could meet you somewhere around your place and we could convoy.

I probably will join your convoy if nobody is planning to head out earlier.

My Girlfriend works till 2:00 and have no one to watch my son , that's why I'm getting a late start,
or I would have done some day time adventures

Yea I have to help Jill deliver a cake up to Carlsbad at noon, the lady that was supposed to pick it up but she broke her ankle... likely excuse
How about we meet at the Shell off the 52 at Convoy at 3pm?
-
I'll see you at 3:00 Saturday
-
Sorry I got mixed up, it's a Chevron that is off the 52. G.B.H. - If you want, you could meet us around the 67/8 around 3:25-3:30 and latch on to our convoy, or go earlier/later if you so choose.

HMMM I always thought it was a Shell ?? learnt something new
-
Also are we allowed fires?? if so we need wood?
-
I will already be in the desert so, no convoying for me. I will try to be at the water tower around 4 or 5. Is there a preferred 2 way radio channel to use if I show up and the group has moved on or not there yet?
G.B.H.
-
Oh, and I'm bringing some wood and a smallish above ground metal fire pit.

Thank you Jordan for leading this Ride , I had a blast and would do it again
with a better bike and be in better Shape
( I didn't realize I was that out of Shape _

What kind of mileage did you guys put down for this ride? Was there much of an elevation gain? Looks like an epic ride.

It was about a 3% uphill grade for 5 + miles and that's only halfway :'(
-
Haha, that's awesome. Did anyone run Strava on the trip? Post pics if you can. I'd have loved going with you all but couldn't swing this one. What was the weather like out there?

It was very warm for the season with a blistering sun all day. I sprayed a ton of sunblock on and still got a little burned. I'd say it was in the mid 80s all day but being directly in the sun was pretty harsh. We kept stopping for breaks in the shaded tunnels.
This was an EPIC trip, and crosses a huge item off of my exploration bucket list. I'm very happy to have seen this bridge in person, and I want to say thanks to knightrider for leading this trip and to everyone else for letting my out-of-shape butt tag along. I feel surprisingly better today than I expected, but I've definitely got some saddle soreness and muscle aches and pains, especially in my arms. A bike with suspension would have helped, but I'm proud of myself for getting this done with what I have. I will definitely not be afraid of mountain bike trips in the future. :)
I got some epic video with the drone, and will get it posted up sometime this week.
-
From where we started(a few miles north of Dos Cabezas) the bridge was roughly 5 miles. There is not much grade as this was a steam engine railroad, according to my gps we started around 1950ft and topped out around 2400ft. That said there are some stretches that are loose sand/gravel/rocks that make it a bit more difficult but easily rideable if you ride regularly.
-
Any drone footage yet?
