Title: San Diego day trip, Labor Day
Post by: CraigBos on August 27, 2017, 09:27:04 PM
UPDATE:  The plan for this is now in reply #10 below (http://www.sccxterra.com/smf/index.php?topic=4436.msg52463#msg52463).  See you Monday!

Anybody up for an easy day trip on Labor Day?  I'd like to run somewhere and have a nice picnic lunch with my 14 and 20 year old sons.  I don't want to start insanely early, but I would like to be able to safely get #1 son to the airport by 1600.

I have a stock 2014 Pro-4X, and will be able to comply with the Xcursion Guidelines (http://www.sccxterra.com/smf/index.php?topic=212.0), except:

For comms, I should be able to dig up a 2m/440 and/or FRS/GMRS handy talkie.  Pretty sure I have a few of those around here somewhere...

BTW, how long since anybody looked at that post.  It looks like it got cut off.  I see the last line like this:

Quote
-   Air compressor. Many of the runs in Southern California are to areas where airing down tires can make a big difference in both traction and comfort, and can also aid in avoiding flats. You

You... what???  The suspense is killing me!

Anyway.

I'm thinking:

Any suggestions or ideas?  Anybody want to do something lightweight on Labor Day?

Otay Mountain is starting to sound good.  I've never been up there, so I only know what I read online.

Based on that, how about we go East to West and dump out at the prison?  Or is it better to go out and back, and stay away from the prison?  I'm easy.  Name start and finish locations, and we can pick a meetup time.

Almost a plan!

The "guidelines" post did in fact start out a lot longer.  Along the way someone else edited it, and then it got chopped off  - not sure how that happened.

It used to have some So Cal trail guidebook listings in it too.  They had several ideas for easy day drives around San Diego.

I don't think I'll be available, but you could also think about going to the fire lookout tower on the top of Los Pinos Mountain.  The road up is paved, but still, the views are really nice.  Pine Creek Road going up into the Lagunas is nice too.  It's also more or less paved, but again, nice scenery.  There is an unpaved portion where you can find an old arrastra (thing they used to grind gold ore with) and a few other historical bits.  It's a spur off off Pine Creek, out and back the same way since the unpaved road ends at private property.

If you do wind up in the local mountains it could be pretty warm and dry up there.

It sounds like Jay has some good ideas.  If you need more, and want to talk over a cup of coffee let me know.  It's not like you are all that far from me.

At the risk of jacking my own thread, the complete post is
here (http://web.archive.org/web/20151028133437/http://www.sccxterra.com/smf/index.php?topic=212.0).  Woo hoo! Thank you Internet Wayback Machine!

Looks like the current post is getting cut off where there is an apostrophe after the "you."  Maybe you can change "you're" to "you are" and recover it.

Back to the topic:  It's gonna be fun going up Otay with Jay rat and little Jay rat on Labor Day, yes!

There are 2 ways off the Otay Mountain Truck trail,

-Donavan Prison
or
Coyote Canyon Cafe , (good lunch spot)

It's a shame I'd be out in town. Been to Otay once before, was fun even tho I was just following other people. Maybe next time we could do something like this again.
On the bright side I should be getting my comm set up finally

Excellent Thread Craig!

Always glad to see 'new blood' taking the lead.  (Ask not what my club can do for me...)

I think I can talk my wife into making this one ;)

Thanks for the invite.

Oh bother.

CalFire published a map showing the fire area one ridge to the east of Marron Valley Road.  But they placed their pin for the fire on Marron Valley road just south of South Bay Rod and Gun.  I plotted it on the map (https://drive.google.com/open?id=160UhHcYIaESe9GDuZgiVtBRdbLA&usp=sharing).

(http://gallery.sccxterra.com/albums/userpics/11891/normal_Screenshot_2017-09-01_at_08_31_49.png) (http://gallery.sccxterra.com/displayimage.php?pid=81&fullsize=1)

CalFire is now reporting 50 acres, 0% contained as of 0821 1 Sep.  The San Diego CalFire twitter feed is here:  https://twitter.com/CALFIRESANDIEGO

Let's keep an eye on it and see how it shapes up over the next couple of days.

Thanks for the heads up, Jay.

Added him.  Also added the maybes, what the hey.

Looks like CalFire is getting a handle on that fire:  120 acres, 15% contained as of about 1120 today.  And they say it is spreading to the northeast.

The incident page is here:  http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/incidents/incidents_details_info?incident_id=1796

Nice video clip showing retardant lines around the fire and a sweet drop:  https://twitter.com/nbcsandiego/status/903755591239307264

120 acres, 25% contained as of around 1810 1 September.  Forward spread stopped, and at least one strike team has been released.  Good progress all the way around.

Yep, all good on the fire front -- maybe still stay away from South Bay Rod and Gun.

Over the weekend, I installed a 2m mobile radio in the X, so I'm gonna vote we use 2m for comms.  If there's a repeater you guys tend to use, let me know which one.  Otherwise, on the way in the boys and I will monitor:

OBTW, my call is KD6WQH.

See you guys at the place at 0900.  Looking forward to it!

What a great time.  Loved meeting Jay, Duffer, the two little urchins, and the two Jeep guys.  I'm bad with names, sorry.

Climbing up through the clouds was cool, as was driving a few spots I wouldn't have tried on my own.

Thanks Jay, for being the first to give a thumbs up, and for leading on trail.  And thanks everyone for coming.

Pics to follow

Perfect little half day outing.  It was great to meet all the new faces and Jay's not-so-new face.

Thanks to all.

In terms of the route, we did the primary route from Coyote Canyon Cafe to the summit, then west down the mountain and exited at the prison.  That was option one on the map (https://drive.google.com/open?id=160UhHcYIaESe9GDuZgiVtBRdbLA&usp=sharing).  We also took a couple of fun side trails.

Thanks again for coming guys!
