Title: 4th of July Holiday Weekend 2017: Planning Thread
Post by: steve c on June 07, 2017, 05:16:31 PM
(https://i.makeagif.com/media/5-20-2015/o4Nm5F.gif)

Just looked at a calendar and realized the 4th of July lands on a Tuesday this year.
I also checked with work and I have that Monday off.  That means, FOUR DAY WEEKEND!

Does anyone want to get high and celebrate America's birthday?
(and by high, I mean altitude)

I'm thinking mountains!

First place that comes to mind is Monache Meadows... 4x4 required to get in and out which means no RVs or drunk teenagers in their honda civics!

I figured we could start planning now since it's less than a month away.  Give people the chance to put those requests in to work if needed and make arrangements.

I don't really want to lead this run, I'll leave that to Jordan or whomever.  Also, i'm not married to my first idea and definitely open to other people's suggestions for locations.

Monache Meadows is north of Kennedy Meadows.  To get there, go up HWY395 to the Shell station/Subway that we stopped at coming back from Cerro Gordo.  Top off your tanks there, then go north three miles and hang a left on 9 Mile Canyon Road. That will get you in the area.

Sounds like an awesome trip, but I already have a family obligation that weekend. Some family coming into town for a BBQ/housewarming party at my cousin's new place in Riverside. Have fun guys!

Toro made a good point via text, Monache Meadows may be packed for the 4th.  I have NO idea or context as I've only been there once.

Does anyone else have a good idea?

Probably everywhere will have more people than a non-holiday weekend.  I am still down with giving Monache a try.

If I could arrive into camp maybe mid afternoon on Saturday, that would be awesome.
I remember Monache being a long day of driving.

It all boils down to drive time...closest elevated places are gonna be smashed with humanity, IF  you can get a reservation this late in the game.

Some places to drag your pointer to...

-Shuteye Ridge Trail, off the 395, High Sierras

-Check out areas in and around Flagstaff, AZ.  Lots of dispersed camping, and fun off road trails in and around the Crown King area.  There are also LOTS of fire roads in and out of the Coconino Nat'l Forest to explore.

-Reno/Tahoe area, a days drive but also lots of dispersed camping (do your Google work) and off road trails to check out...incl the Rubicon area.

I've been planning a trip in the area, Monache has been high on my list of places to visit for a long time. The backup plan is to go just west of there and explore either Forest Rte 22S12 or the Sherman Peak 4X4 trail. Should be back by the 30th and can report what it's like if you guys are interested?

Longer drive but there is Coyote Flats by Bishop, gets up to over 11000 ft.  I have seen videos that it is clear of enough snow.  Mazurka Canyon/Papoose Flats above independence and Big Pine, could even go to the Bristol cone pines from there.

Are you interested in heading out with a small SCCX group?

Here is the latest I read about Monache Meadows. From the looks of it things will be washed out for a long time unless they authorize relocating the trail but I don't know the politics of that.

I'm running out of ideas and we're all running out of time!

Seems like a waste not to do something.

To save you from going to the in laws you can always go to work for me and I'll go wheeling. See a win/win for everyone involved.

I don't know if you had any luck getting a trip assembled for the 4th but if not, perhaps you would be interested in some mayhem. Some of you know the fun I've had with my rear tire carrier order from Calmini that started approx Nov. 2016. Apparently this is a very special tire carrier requiring cutting edge R&D based on quantum physics and using the latest in space age materials OR these guys are simply feckless.

Whichever the case, the dark side has taken over my mind and I am determined to have make some fun out of this little fiasco.

Justin made the mistake of admitting the carrier is actually assembled and powder-coated and sitting in staging area to be shipped. I suspect it will be there for quite some time given their unique understanding of space and time. I confirmed they are open Monday which I have off from work.

SO...

Would anyone be interested in throwing and old fashion rumble at Calmini? You know, show up with a bunch of Xterras, storm into the office and basically make pests of ourselves until they give up the damn bumper.

Disclaimer:
I am being sarcastic. I do not mean go in Mad Max style and burn the place down or do anything ridiculous. Justin has actually been very apologetic about the whole thing... about 1500 times... and it is obvious he has no control over actually making anything happen any faster. I wouldn't take his job for a million dollars.

I will be talking again with Justin later today (I can tell he is really looking forward to it) and, if he confirms once more the bumper is physically there, I am rolling north Monday from San Diego. Anyone want to meet there? Maybe do a San Diego/ OC/ LA get together and then grab some grub while making fun of the example of excellence that is Calmini?
Title: Siege at Calmini Cancelled
Post by: zaphos on June 30, 2017, 12:24:37 PM
Justin did call me back and explained a whole lot about why this order is screwed up. They built it as a 2nd gen and had to re-do the swing gate and now the license plate bracket is on the wrong side. HE PROMISES it will be ready by the end of next week. He was once again very cool and apologetic about the whole thing which is like Kryptonite to my dark side.

Sorry if I hijacked anyone's thread, I thought it might be a way to get a quick trip put together over the holiday weekend.

Some people like to BBQ, Normans like to siege

Where is Calmini located?

Where is Calmini located?

West Bakersfield.  North on the 99 to 58 West.  It's about 7-8 from the intersection in the "NEWER" part of the Bakersfield.  Still a ghetto. :-X
