Ok... so I took over 1500 images on this trip! Here are most of the "keepers." :)
I can't wait to see a few of the shots that Tim and Steve got of my rig, since I never get to see cool shots of myself. It was nice that my wife got a few of me going through the technical stuff on the first day.
Anyway, here are the photos along with some narrative for those who couldn't be there:
My wife and I arrived in Lone Pine late Friday afternoon. After checking in to the hotel, we spent about 2 hours exploring the area before meeting the group for dinner. We checked out the old abandoned airstrip across the highway from the Manzanar camp, and we did the "Movie Road" loop through the Alabama Hills:

The next morning, the group all met up at the trailhead near Swansea. My wife and I spent a few minutes exploring around Owens Lake. Even managed to get a couple of cool shots of my rig parked on a levee/spillway looking like it was in the water:

After some socializing, airing down, and a brief chat from Tony, it was time to hit the trail. The road climbs up the Swansea grade pretty rapidly, and some of the tower structures from the old salt tram came into view pretty quickly. We took a slow and gentle pace, stopping for a lot of photos. There was one technical section along this stretch of trail, but the group made quick work of it:

Once we reached closer to 6500 feet in elevation, we came into a really cool Pinyon forest, and the towers for the salt tram became even more impressive. We stopped in a really awesome wooded/shaded area for lunch, and spent a few minutes poking around the area and taking photos and enjoying the view:

The views from the Burgess Mine at the top (9800 feet) were even more amazing! We absorbed the views for a while and Tony scouted an area he thought would be good for camp. He quickly returned and said the spot was too small for our group, so we decided to camp there at the mine, right on the ridge. The winds were calm and the temperature was beautiful. We couldn't have gotten any more lucky with the conditions.

We set up camp and never did get over how amazing the views were. Hennie and I took a hike up a nearby hill (to well over 10,000 feet) to get some overhead shots of the camp. As night fell, the campfire was lit and we all enjoyed ourselves for a few hours hovered around it:

After breakfast, it was time to pack up camp and hit the road toward the summit station for the salt tram. We took a few more minutes to enjoy the views before hitting the road and running along the ridge:

It only took us 45 minutes or so to traverse the ridge line and see the station in view. We stopped and explored/admired the workings for a pretty good amount of time. The station, cabin and towers were so impressive up close:

The town of Cerro Gordo finally came into view, and we passed through on our way to our campsite:

We reached camp very early (just after 1:00 pm), so my wife and I decided to break away from the group and drop down into the Saline Valley via continuing along Cerro Gordo Road to White Mountain Talc Road to Saline Valley Road. I got a quick approval from Tony and ensured that we'd be in constant radio communication with one another, and we were off. While traveling along White Mountain Talc Road toward Saline Valley Road, we passed through an area known as Lee Flat. The area is very impressive, with many Joshua Trees and quite a bit of wildlife. We even got some great shots of a beautiful red tail hawk that was being harassed by the local mocking bird:

Once we hit Saline Valley Road, we started heading toward the valley floor, pausing to look out over Badwater and the lowest point in the United States. We even hit a traffic jam of "locals" along Saline Valley Road just after we passed Hunter Mountain Road:

It was a rather warm 106 degrees on the valley floor, but that didn't stop us from driving out to the salt lake to see the end of the tram. We had started our journey the day before at the Swansea side of the tram, and I sure as heck wasn't going to miss an opportunity to see the other end of such a remarkable piece of engineering. It's hard to believe we had been up on the top of that mountain just a few hours earlier. The salt lake itself was also quite beautiful. The salt was slushy and wet in some areas, but there were plenty of little catwalk areas you could venture out on. I snapped a few photos here, and admired how much the salt and the earth had reclaimed virtually everything that had been installed for the tram:

Unfortunately, I burned quite a bit more fuel than I had originally planned to by taking the side trip down into the valley. Having only brought one rotopax container with me (2 gallons), and with my fuel light about to come on as we headed back out of the valley toward camp, we had no choice but to head into Panamint Springs to get some fuel. I radioed Tony and gave him our ETA, and we took Saline Valley Road back to Hwy 190 and down to the Panamint Springs "Resort." (those who have been there will understand why "resort" is in quotation marks!)
Once fueled up, we headed back to camp and got our stuff set up with plenty of daylight to spare. The group got the campfire going, and we all enjoyed each other's company and some dinner (cooking individually) once more.

The final day (Monday morning), we broke camp and headed back up the hill into the ghost town of Cerro Gordo. The buildings that remain are super impressive, and we got a private tour by Robert the onsite caretaker. He showed us the inside of the American Hotel, which opened for business in 1871 and has been standing ever since. He was full of amazing stories and history about the area, and I could have easily spent months listening to him talk.

He was even nice enough to take us up the road and into the building that houses the hoist and access for the main shaft of the mine, which is 1100 feet deep straight into the earth (into 7 different levels of the mine). The building itself was so impressive, but the treasures within it and around it were absolutely amazing! Once again, Robert was full of information and was more than happy to share it and answer all of our questions:

We bid our farewells to the town and it's rich history, and proceeded to head down the mountain. The road down was rather steep, but very well maintained (thanks to some FAA and AT&T radio towers at the top of the hill, and the crews who have to access the towers often). As we traveled down the canyon, we even caught sight of a salt bucket suspended about 400 feet up in the air from the old tram system:

Once we hit the bottom of the hill, we aired back up and departed for home. Once again, this was one of the most memorable trips I've ever been on. The views are so spectacular, these photos do not do it justice! And we couldn't have asked for better weather or trail conditions. Hats off to Tony for putting together such an amazing trip, as well as leading us around and keeping us all safe and accounted for. Hope you all enjoyed the photos!

Wow, that was nice of Robert to open up the hoist building for you guys, he rarely ever does that. I have spent a lot of hours in that building. Last thing we did there was move the big black tanks inside after a bit of cleanup. You should have seen it before the rehab, it was falling down.

What we see here is Steve trying to remain as calm as possible.
What happened was I was bumping along and all the sudden I feel the truck do some three wheel motion.
Being on a shelfish type road, I stopped the truck and politely asked Mr. Jordan for some assistance.
When he (and Tony) arrived, they told me I had something leaking... oh sh!t, that's coolant... TURN THE TRUCK OFF!
After being assured that it "looked much worse than it felt" I cranked the heat and with Jordan and Tony's direction, made my ways up the hill.
It doesn't look scary, of course, but boy, did it sure feel scary! Hennie's lovely wife reminded me a couple of times later tha she was glad it was me and not her!

Camp on day three was a little bit "hold my beer and watch this"
Tony, our fearless and intrepid leader, had a pretty good idea that maybe sort of there would be a great campsite for us! We had faith and boy, did he deliver!
The rest of us sat on the road while he explored 1 (one) side road. He came over the radio and said this is it!
We all pile in to discover an old mining base camp! Perfect for our 10+ rigs!
Dog sniffing and doing circles commenced and we all got settled.

Next day, we piled into the trucks and headed to Cerro Gordo Ghost Town. What a place!
Robert, the caretaker for the area, was amazing. He seemed to be really into what we were doing and rolled out the red carpet for us.
Lot's of stories and great historical insight. I especially like the "personal" history. The stuff you would never hear in a high school American history class. Murder, whores, brothels, backstabbing, skullduggery etc. The man was a walking wikipedia!

Great camp trip with awesome people. I hope I can go back one day. I'm a little scared that the repeat trip won't hold a candle to the first one, but I'll give it a try!

One of these days I'm going to have to give up my tried and true Polaroid camera and get one of these new fangled 35mm ones. Then I can get some training on how to take some of these fantastic pics like the ones that have been posted in here. I really appreciate all the work you guys did to document this fantastic trip!
