Ok guys, I'm in the planning stages again of the 2018 Winter Mojave Rd. I'm setting this for 12 vehicles. Last two years have been a blast so I'll continue the tradition. Dates are Jan 13/14/15 2018. West to Eastbound travel into Laughlin via Afton Cyn. We can hopefully go through Soda Lake this time but like always is weather dependant. If anyone wants to try a little different route I'm fine with that just post up the ideas. Last year Sage Bromax and I turned around and went back but cut through south for some fun wheeling and camping in a really great wash. I'd be more than happy to modify the route. If the group wants we can circumvent Laughlin altogether and head home the same general way. Re-fuel in Twentynine Palms and head home that way or keep it like always running through to Laughlin to the hotel for a shower and sleep.
Requirements: Get there with a good attitude. Maintain good attitude. Be self sufficient, bring firewood. Fire Jenga. The rest is up to you as that typically works best with this group.
1. Celt (+1)
2. Chimpanzee
3. Sage Bromax (Official cat herder)
4. Jayrat (Official Canadian)
5. Scuba Dale
6. Fire Ninja
7. #2
8. Carlos Moreno (+2)
9. Duffman
10. Rogue Overland (The NV crew)
11. Rogue Overland
12. Rogue Overland
Standby list:
1. Valentin 36
2. Rik Rong
3. Ghost +1
4. Ultra PC40
5. JVR
6. GreenAcres

I'm not sure? I need to see what Fathead's plans are. I need to check the lunar calendar to make sure he's not otherwise involved in creating a solar eclipse for those dates.

For a second there I thought I saw smoke signals but then I got the Western Union telegram you wanted me to get on the party line for confirmation.

Put me down for standby. I know it's rare that people ever drop out of SCCX runs (as they do on TNX runs), but you never know. O0

Added, just as a small side note this trip can lend itself to some pretty harsh conditions out in the high desert. Not saying you cannot go just making sure that you are willing to deal with high winds and temps ranging from the 20s 40s possible, mud, rain snow etc. All of the guys signed up have been on the last two trips and are great resources. I added a couple links for you from the last two trips for your perusement and pontification. That being said, you are added to the "list" and welcome aboard!

Good advice...one of the reasons we bought a mountaineering ground tent for our winter desert adventures. Wind sucks...er, blows.

Tip #1: Don't bring an easy up.
Tip #2: Don't bring an easy up.
Weather first year was great. A little cold, but manageable. Last year was a different story. Cold, wet, and windy for the first night on the road. Cold the 2nd night. Even though the weather did not cooperate last year, it was still one of the most enjoyable runs I've done to date. The crew that we have makes up for any hitches along the way.

So what you're saying is, no easy up :D (To be honest I had to look up what an easy up even was!)
I've camped with temps in the teens, in Texas, surprisingly, so the cold is okay. The wind would be the bigger issue. Sleeping in my X solves the tent part. I figure on getting goggles and wearing ear plugs so I can still function when the sand blows.
But first, have to get on the "go" list (off standby) :-[

Maybe we could do a "Meet -N- Greet" somewhere along the route featuring SCUBA DALE and The Mojave Road Boys?

Will you require the greeters to bring a single-malt to pay homage?
-
Will you require the greeters to bring a single-malt to pay homage?
Yes, yes, yea I forgot about the all important SINGLE MALT, you have to bring that after all it's a requirement just like a HAM. I'm still considering requiring name tags, order of march with vehicle numbers including HAM call signs which will be mandatory i.e. no "Hey you's" cause you know the FCC and all care about our simplex transmissions out there. By the way how many spare tires is everyone planning to bring? Bead setter? Who has one, we need one. Let's see, I'm sure I'm forgetting something. As of now I'm not going to require special gearing or lockers front and rear but that may change. I think I need to go back to the drawing board and re-think this entire plan and my initial post and past runs have been way too loosely formatted in every way possible. There has been way too many shenanigans going on and nothing has been done according to strict military discipline along the way. Things are about to change I decree, things are about to change..............

Dumb question, to appease my OCD need to plan far ahead and also the need to plan out leave. This run is Saturday, Sunday, Monday. So, meet Saturday morning at the beginning of the road; drive Saturday, camp; drive Sunday, camp; and drive to hotel on Monday and stay Monday night? With the intentions of heading back home Tuesday morning?

Correct,
or you can drive straight home afterwards,
Last year I arrived in SD at 11:00pm Monday night (I work Tuesdays)

Since were getting close to the trip I wanted to throw out a couple of suggestions. Since we all know how cold it can get out there I'm asking everyone to try and bring four bundles of wood and if it's possible to get hardwood even better. I know some are limited on space so please do what you can. I'll see if I can get some Manzanita as that burns super hot. I want to ensure we can have a hot enough fire to keep everyone warm out there. It looks like we are going to have a great group this year again and I'm really looking forward to this. The help and support everyone lends putting this together makes it all the better. I'll update on the hotel reservations soon...
-
Didn’t see it in the post, what time are you planning on hitting the trail from Afton Canyon Campground on the 13th? Trying to figure out logistics on leaving Vegas the 12th or 13th.
We will bring some mesquite and olive wood.

Since we have a strict time hack and adhere to a very stringent pre-run protocol and inspection, I would suppose we will leave when guys get up, make breakfast and pack up. I would imagine sometime around 1000 AM but if you aren't there by then we will wait around for you. If you come out the night before that will work just fine too as we generally have a fire going and everyone hangs out for some pre-run fun. Thanks for haulin some wood!
-
So for hotel reservations I was able to secure a group rate at The Golden Nugget. Part of my reasoning is they have some good restaurants right there Saltgrass Steakhouse (Bid'ness casual attire so I guess Carhart's and mud may be frowned upon), Claim Jumper, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. onsite deli and a Starbucks for you triple frappe-whippacino extra frothay kinda guys. Room service is from Claim Jumper but the deli is open 24/7. They gave us reserved free VIP parking in their parking structure for our vehicles. We won't have to lug stuff too far. The rate was quoted as $35 per room plus $12.50 sales tax the state initiated last year so $47.50. I'll PM everyone the code to use for your reservations. They are going to put us all close together which will be nice. Everyone is responsible for making your own reservations there and any bills you may incur. If you have any issues with the reservations PM me as I'm the POC with the hotel and will try to get any issues straightened out but I do not foresee any.
Giddy up guys this is going to be a fun trip!
-
Coolio Hoolio,
Are we the SCCX group or some other code name for reservations?
We'll see if the Rouge rigs can squeeze into the parking structure :P
This is gonna be so much fun.
PS: I am presently grinding on my E locker for this trip... Just in case.
-
This is coming up quick ! Definitely looking forward to this run ! Will make sure we bring lots of Firewood from Vegas- the blood has thinned substantially over the years...

-
Are we the SCCX group or some other code name for reservations? (As soon as they send me the hotel code I'm going to PM that to everyone with any other special instructions).
We'll see if the Rouge rigs can squeeze into the parking structure :P (I was thinking about exactly that last night but I believe the code height should be enough to get a standard fire truck inside so they should be ok albeit a close fit).
-
Just got a email from the manager at the hotel and she said if any of our vehicles are over 6'8" they will reserve parking for us that will accommodate the entire group so we won't have to be separated. This hotel is being very accommodating for us and are super easy to deal with. Check your inboxes in the next few days for the group code to pay for your rooms.

I'm sure many of the HAMs already have the repeaters permanently programmed, since SCCX makes this run twice a year. However, just in case, here are the repeaters I loaded up for the run I did in April of last year. I've also included the WIN system repeaters, which should be programmed by anyone living in the SW.

The lake bed is fun. Just got to watch out for the giant rut in the middle. You see broken parts there all the time.
There was one year where I did the lake bed in the rain and my truck double it’s weight in mud.

A few thoughts before we take off. It looks like soda lake is still passable so plan on that route. I was thinking about bypassing the lava tubes as most of us has been there numerous times. I wanted to leave about 11 because we have people travelling from distances that morning. Those of us already there can sleep in a little and not be in a rush to pack up that morning. Bring a frog, gnome or a matchbox car for the garden at the mailbox and a penny for the can. Whoever has the banner please bring it so we can get a group photo out there. Bring as much wood as you can reasonably haul to help keep the large group warm. It looks like the weather should be clear and cold for us. Doesn't thus far look like any big winds predicted but we all know how that goes. Gas prices in Yermo seem to be at an all time high for this time of year as they seem to be about $3.29 to $3.50 or more. Barstow is slightly cheaper so hopefully they will drop a little right after new years (You suck Gov Moonbeam). I'm looking forward to this trip with everyone and think were going to have another great time.
-
I would be willing to lead a group to the lava tubes and meet at the camp if people want to go. Fire Ninja has his son, nephew, and cousin with him, and I'll have my father and brother in law with me that have never seen them. I don't want to make the entire group stop for just a few of us.

I would definitely support that. I have a few ideas that could work and not have the two groups too far apart from each other time wise at any given point. Do you have a 2M repeater that should roughly cover that area to Beale Mtn in mind?

Here are the 2 repeaters that would, I THINK. The one in Baker would be best, Ludlow would be alternate. Let me know your thoughts.

According to a previous trip log, this seems to be the best for the western side.

I have the Ludlow repeater locked in so let's give that one a go.

I spoke with the manager again at the hotel and she said even though our group rate window is closed you can call her direct and she will make sure you can still get the group rate should you change your mind and decide not to head back that afternoon/early evening when we head back. PM me and I'll get you her phone number.

I've been watching that and it seems about 1/4" is called for between Mo/Tu with some moderate winds. The rainfall is supposed to be intermittent so it will be able to soak up. I'm going to evaluate it when we get out there but by Saturday morning it should have tightened up enough that it shouldn't be a worry and we can still cross the lake bed.

From what I'm seeing is Barstow had .40 of rain over Mo-Tu. It was fairly windy out there during the day yesterday and today/tomorrow calls for sun so I'm thinkin it's on for the lake bed route finally.

Got back last night and unloaded everything for the most part. Today is going to be cleaning and servicing the equipment. The trip went great. Everyone aboard did a fantastic job at making this a super fun event with lots of laughs. I can tell you that Soda Lake AKA The Dry Lake Bed ain't so dry.... We decided as a group to see if we could get through it even though it had 0.40 rainfall several days before. It quickly turned into some kind of southern redneck muddin' event. Everyone made it through without any hitches but I did really enjoy hearing everyone's personal stories of getting across after. As much fun and challenging as it was I'm not going to experience that again on this trip.
The weather was just amazing, other than some heavy wind gusts at our first campsite it was super calm and very comfortable by day and crisp by night. No snow in NY Mountains either. We had a couple last minute cancellations but those spots were filled up to literally the day before the trip. This is the 3rd trip so far and as I see it there should be many more. Each year has had it's own challenges and crazy things happening but this group is a lot of fun and if you haven't yet gone on this in the winter you are missing out. I unfortunately didn't take my camera (Pre-packing faux pas) so I'll be relying on the attendees to post up some pics and maybe some video. I know The Rogue Overland crew was busy with their cameras so I'm excited to see what they got. Hopefully I can talk them into throwing up a link. A few others had cameras and Go-Pro's out there so I'm hoping soon enough everyone can see some photo documentation of the trip and maybe some funny stories along the way. At the end of the trip we stayed at The Golden Nugget which I was really happy with. I think I will continue to go with them for our needs.
Thanks again to everyone who attended you are the ones who make this so much fun. It was a lot of fun to see everyone again as it's always too far in between these gatherings.

I'd like to thank Celt for letting me fill in for the cancellations. I'd also like to thank him for leading a great run and for everyone contributing to a run that's one for the books. The lake was hairy, but we all made it out, albeit with 200 more pounds on the truck. There was no drama between people or with any of the rigs, so it was good weekend.

It's really hard to tell everyone's vehicles apart in the pictures, all your trucks are the same color!!

Still considering the run since 2 things, its my bday weekend and I been itching for a trip in a while (since mountain rendezvous).
After checking out last years Mojave run, Im assuming Afton Cyn is still going to be the road that will lead to the campsite in the NY mountains, and from there cedar mountain rd to Laughlin. correct? im just trying to map the run due to my wife not feeling 100% being self sufficient for 3 days 2 nights. We always been a 1 nighter type of campers, so this will definitely change things up.
This needs to be posted in the thread for the 2019 run.
