Title: 9/26-27 Hungry Valley/ Los Padres
Post by: xtoolbox on September 10, 2009, 08:07:24 PM
Have some ideas for 9/26-27 at Hungry Valley OHV & Los Padres NF trails around Frazier Park, Lockwood so who's interested :D

Meet: 9/26 @ 10am McDonald's
25323 CHIQUELLA LN, NEWHALL, CA 91381-2210
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=25323+CHIQUELLA+LN,+NEWHALL,+CA+91381-22&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=59.769082,134.912109&ie=UTF8&z=17&iwloc=A

2nd meet 9/26 at the Hungry Valley OHV Gorman entrance parking lot before the booth if needed.

Saturday run is inside the Hungry Valley OHV.  Variety of trails for all levels plus a fun 4x4 practice area.   Normally we hit the big hill climbs under the power lines, cottonwood trail, etc on the way to the practice area,

I am going to lead the Saturday run like I did last year around Hungry Valley ORV area. We might try a different trail as the one we took was more suitable to Honda CR-Vs rather than Xterras. There were a few newbies out that day and it made for a nice shake down but even dead stock the Xterra can do more. Maybe the Pronghorn Trail which is moderate "narrow, tippy, and steep in places", 12.7 miles, about 2 hours. Might have time to do the powerline trail too south to north then play on the 4WD practice area.

Sunday

Edited 1st post with more details.  Both days:  easy, moderate, to as difficult as you want to make the trails, otherwise stock friendly :D

Changed up the camp to make it different then last year but you can always ride up alamo mt and camp at twin pines if you don't feel like heading back to the 5 & frazier park.

aye, it would be good to see every one again. I'm going to tentatively say we'll be there, but no guarantees. I'll even bust my balls trying to get my sammi working as a day in HV would be a good test run.

I am a possible since this is in my backyard. I have test the new setup anyhow. Saturday only have to work Sunday, unless the birds don't want to play right on Friday.

Chris let me know I can lend a wrench since you are close. Also have access to base and lifts with tools etc..

Thanks Chris, I don't think it's going to be practicle for me to get the sammi done safely, I'd hate to run into problems on the trail and make everyone one else wait for me. some other day! (oh no, more 4x4 trips, what a shame) I'd rather take my time and get it done right.

I need to take out the rear 3-rd member and take it to a diff shop to find out what's wrong with it.

I need a longer brakeline in the rear before I can go play.  In additional I have a broken EVAP line.  So the check engine light is on.

It's going to be hot out there so bring plenty of water and keep an eye on the campfire if you have one.

Hopefully I will make the trip next month.

Yes and hitting the road about 10:15/10:30

My cell phone number is nine five one 840 and 8611 if anyone needs to call. I'll be monitoring amateur radio two meters 146.52 MHz and FRS channel 9.

Sunday afternoon's runs depend on who there as there are moderate and easy trails in the Lockwood area. I'd like to do one of the mountain loops at least - should be a short day on Sunday. This shouldn't be that difficult overall. Saturday afternoon we'll have fun in the 4x4 playground at Hungry Valley where there are places to test out your meddle. There's a nice 250 foot long "black diamond" rock garden to try out if you want and a concrete hill with various levels of difficulty. Ought to make for some fun and good pictures.

I plan on us camping at the campground with the toilets and water. I'll have our new propane camp stove and some meat on a stick to add to the pot luck. Likely to be restrictions on charcoal and ground fires since the fire danger is so high.

We're bringing some steaks and fixings... I'll bring a few extras!
A few beers just might find their way into the cooler but I can't make any guarantees. :-)

Of course beer is allowed, just not on the trail, and not in excess while with the club.

What do you want to cook? We never seem to be short on food as everyone brings enough for themselves and then more ... chips/salsa, cake, pies ...

Like was said - beer is welcomed but no drinking on the trail and in moderation following.

We're going to run from Gorman's main Hungry Valley entrance along the Powerline Road west to east until we hit the Pronghorn Trail and then take that from north to south until we hit Hungry Valley road. We're take that east to west until we reach the 4WD practice area sometime in the afternoon.

We're going out the Gorman exit along the 5 to Chuchupate south and west of Lake of the Woods. Depending on the time of day and the trucks camping overnight we might run up over the Alamo Mountain and out to Lockwood Flat and then north east back to the Hungry Valley area and then out.

I wouldn't be surprised if we're in cell phone service all Saturday - give me a call when you get close.

We'll likely hit the trails at Hungry Valley about 11:00 (40 minute drive from Stevenson Ranch/Newhall) so within that hour and a half we ought to be running down the Power Line road to the South East nearing lunch time.

Fun trip, but for me and Emily it got cut short. There was a little mud pit there and it was enough to clog up the radiator and kill the alternator :( will post pics and videos some times soon!

It was kinda odd, we took off to quail canyon before camping and the light came on. We stopped and rinsed the alternator with water and the light went off and it was charging. Drove 1/4-1/2 mile and the light came on again :( gonna take it off tomorrow and rinse it real good then take it to a shop for testing.

I think they ate at that hot dog vendor's stand.

I've got three pounds of tri-tip left.  :-\

Long three hour drive home though some pretty busy freeways but no stop-n-go traffic.

The trails today were a mixture of 2WD glass smooth to some pretty challenging (real) black diamond level stuff heading down Lockwood Creek Trail. Next time we need to run the course from south to north up hill. Pictures to follow ... I'm tired.

lol , I was overheating on the way home. I developed a crack at the neck of the filler on the radiator. I knew it though from McDs. Decided to go anyhow. One of the things you dont think of till it happens. despite the carnage I had a blast at the playground. I am going to take some people from work out there before life gets to crazy.
