Dangit, &*^$%#!! I would love to go on this but I won't have weekends off until the second week of May. If you do a standby list put me down just in case I can get the time off.

Would this trail be 2wd friendly? what kind of rig requirements are needed?

Nice post Jay!!

We already have plans for that weekend, but let me know if I can assist in any capacity.

This is a great run, with lots to see and check out. Maybe even an air show...if you're lucky.

IMO...90% of this run can be done with a 2wd xterra.

The other 10% can be handled with appropriate placement in the travel queue of the 2wd guys with a 4wd buddy who could potentially help/recover/strap them out of a tight spot.

But...Jay is the trail leader and all final decisions are his to make.  :)

I will be attending a prior camping trip in Hungry valley with a facebook group. hopefully that will give me a little taste before doing things trail.

Honestly bro, if you are cool with us 2wd tagging along and dont mind learning abit, then im all in, but if you dont feel up for it to deal with us 2wd, no hard feelings. Its for the best of the group, I want to ensure everyone will have fun, not feel burden due to me or other 2wd. You are the trail leader, your call maestro!! :)

If you can't do the Bradshaw Trail in 2wd you cannot to the John Bull, Rubicon, Dusy Ershim locked in a SAS'd rock buggy while wearing a bug suit.

Guys this is a really easy trip that requires zero off-road prowess to complete. The biggest thing to bring along is a good attitude and a willingness to laugh. There is a lot to see and historical spots along the way. Where the real merits of this run come in is around the campfire sharing stories with friends and the props that should go to Jay for leading this run!

It's definitely BLM land - that said, it's Jayrat's run and he gets to set the rules, and I'm definitely not implying that it should or should not be a shooting-friendly trip (just chiming about the legality of the matter). The place we camped during Ghost's run a couple years ago actually had a big shooting area just a few hundred yards east of where our campfire was... previous users had even left junk behind to shoot at. That said, it looks like this camping spot is about 1/2 mile away from the one we camped at last time (according to the coordinates in the OP). Actually, this spot appears to be a relatively small spot on top of a little hill that may not be suitable for a large group, but sure does look like a cool spot! https://www.google.com/maps/place/33%C2%B032'49.8%22N+115%C2%B029'18.9%22W/@33.5468913,-115.4897842,619m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d33.5471667!4d-115.4885833

We will be camping in the same spot as before, I was talking to ghost and we believe that was the spot, (a very rocky circle), but i could be wrong.
as for shooting , what ever floats your boat.

It is close enough...I checked the pin, and it actually looks like it may now be on the hilltop that Joe used to record some of his cooler elevated shots.

Regardless...the large area we used for the '15 Bradshaw Run is in this vicinity, and easily located just off of the Gas Line Rd. that travels north of The Bradshaw Trail.

Sweet!

Just to update the camping spot... I'm pretty sure the spot we camped back in 2015 is actually just slightly north of the spot in the OP - at 33°35'12.5"N 115°29'38.2"W

Here, I dropped a pin right on what I think is the fire pit we used: https://www.google.com/maps/place/33%C2%B035'12.5%22N+115%C2%B029'38.2%22W/@33.586815,-115.4945052,174m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d33.586815!4d-115.493958

There was a shooting area set up just up the road. It's pretty close to camp, but if I remember correctly, the road kind of wraps around into a little sheltered area so it may not be too disruptive to anyone that isn't into that sort of thing. It's only about 100 or 150 yards from the campsite, however. If it is, we can always find another spot a little further away. The area is littered with roads and little sheltered valleys against those hills. Here's the spot I saw last time: https://www.google.com/maps/place/33%C2%B035'17.0%22N+115%C2%B029'37.9%22W/@33.588046,-115.4943962,174m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d33.588046!4d-115.493849

Doggonit you silly Canuks, why can't you flippin make a run that corresponds with my days off.............. I would love to go on this this and spend time with all of you. It looks like until May anything weekend is off limits. On a lighter side, it's great to see Jay stepping up and leading a run. Exactly what this group is about, getting out there and enjoying the time given to us amongst good friends.

Alright so we're about 4 weeks away,

Couple of details :
We will be leaving at 10am sharp

Lunch will be on the trail around noon

We should be into camp by 5-6pm , the Sun set's at 7:30pm

Question 1: is there a SCCXer willing to be my Tail gunner and Mid pack for Relay and Herding ??

Question 2:
Are we doing a potluck Dinner (as this trip has amazing Trail Chefs)
or are we fending for ourselves

Thanks everyone ,
I can wait for this Xcurrsion

I volunteer to be the official trip photographer. :) I'll probably move around within the pack quite a bit to get the best shots of everyone in the group, if that's ok.

I'm also ok with either option on dinner, and I would suggest that if we're doing a group dinner on Saturday, that we do a group breakfast on Sunday too. If breakfast is viable, I can bring my big stove and griddle for pancakes or bacon or whatever. I'll even contribute the "bacon of the gods", as usual.

But I'm also perfectly fine with doing my own thing for dinner and breakfast, if that's what everyone prefers. If Duffman is planning to shoot a little, and others are planning to join, that could be happening at the same time as dinner if we're getting to camp around 5-6 pm and might even split the group up a little.

Might be cool during our Saturday drive to check out that Eagle Mountain railroad trestle that is west of the Bradshaw Trail/Red Canyon intersection?

It's approximately 4 miles (12minutes) west of Red Canyon
I say we do it, it's a small enough group of experienced drivers
besides you know me and my Train issues

VERY excited about this! I've wanted to check out that bridge for quite some time. :)

If anyone wants I can make Stew with dumplings or Sliders for Saturday night ??

This I like.

First time meeting you those dumplings were a warm handshake for my stomach...

I'll volunteer to make my Dutch Oven jumbalaya, with andouille sausage/chicken/and spicy rice (I'll leave the shrimp out this time Duffman  ;) )...prolly serves 8 hungry trail rats.  :)

I think we did this last time.

Would my 2 burner stove and griddle be necessary?
I know Joe's bringing the monster.

Between bacon and eggs and pancakes, my guess is that there will be a good need for griddles. Is it a PITA to bring? If so, we can probably manage without. If not, it may be nice to have another. :)

Joe, I can totally bring it, but it limits my ability to bring abundant firewood.
Hopefully, this problem will be remedied soon by a full replacement roof rack

Save the room and bring the wood...I'm packing my CC Explorer Twin with my griddle too, so we should be set for breakfast fixin's and other necessary meals.

I'm guesstimating about 18 folks for a head count...does that sound about right guys?

Couple of quick questions,

the pictures from the book has the trail start at the eastern end of the trail and finishing on the west end, this means we are meeting at Patton and driving east for about an hour, get on the trail and head back west toward salton sea?

Also are there any bathrooms on this trial and/or campsite? my girl isn't the biggest fan of peeing behind a bush if it can be helped haha.

Thanks!

Across the freeway from Chiriaco Summit (south side) there is a dirt road that will connect us with the northern end of Red Canyon Jeep Trail.  We will follow this trail to the south and east until we drop down into a wide wash where we will intersect Summit Road.  Going southwest on Summit Road for 3.9 miles will take us to the train trestle discussed previously.  Going notheast on Summit Road from Red Canyon Jeep Trail for 2.6 miles will take us to the intersection with the Bradshaw Trail.  We will then continue east on Bradshaw Trail before turning toward our camping area.  There are no campgrounds, facilities or running water (potable) on this trip.  It is all primitive.  The bathrooms are what you bring with you.

Thanks for the reply. Figured it would be 100% primitive, but wasn't sure if there were any establishments along the route.

And to confirm, the trip is from West-ish, to East-ish, ending in Blyth-ish, and then driving back (for me) west on the 10 back toward the Patton museum?

I can't confirm how far east we are going.  That is Jay's call.  But based on the coordinates of the campsite listed previously, it looks like we are turning north on Gas Line Road which takes us up near Hwy 10.  From camp it wouldn't be very far back to the freeway.  I don't think the plan is to go all the way east to Blythe.

FYI...in 2015 we departed the campsite off of Gas Line Road and headed east on The Bradshaw Trail (it was raining, we left early) until we reached Wiley Well Road.

From there we headed north on Wiley Well Road, past the correctional facility and to I-10.

The campsite area as mentioned is 100% primitive, with some creosote bushes, but not a lot. Privacy for bathroom purposes can be found a short walk from camp. Some of us pack Luggable-Loo style products with Wag Bags. REI and Big 5 sell both, or a shovel "if you know how to use it" ;)

This is a two day/one night pretty simple Xcursion, hopefully not too complex to prepare for.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday morning.

Thanks for the clarification. I am afraid I will have to back out of this trip... I was already going to be on a bit of time crunch getting home on Sunday due to assignment deadlines and midterm exams. The drive home from Palo Verde is going to be just a bit too long for me to get all my responsibilities handled.

June cannot come soon enough... :-\ :-\ I will graduate and be free to finally make one of these excursions! Have fun, be safe, and take tons of pictures so I can weep over them when you return.

I was also assuming that we would be taking the same route as two years ago - taking Wiley's Well Road north to the 10, and hitting I-10 around lunch time (or sooner even... I think we started airing up right around noon last time). The additional travel along Bradshaw Trail is about 10 miles further. Doubling back on I-10 to Wiley's Well Road is not much time at all, but I'm kind of in a similar situation as CVXTERRA in terms of needing to get home as soon as possible, since the wife works early in the AM on Monday. I promised her we'd be home in the late afternoon on Sunday.

Jay - do you have an estimate or plan as to when the day will end and everyone will head back home? I think if we're wrapping up by 2:00 pm or so, I can still have her home by 5:00 and avoid becoming a liar. :) Worst case scenario, me and my clan can just peel off from the group at Wiley's Well and head home earlier, if necessary. I can also offer to lead anyone else back to the 10 via this same route if they need to leave earlier as well.

I had to peel off last year...and lemme tell ya...while it was easy to find the 10 and head west, it was not easy to anticipate the ruts in the road....I saw my cooler catch about a foot of air in my rear-view after I mis-judged a whoop or two and caught some legit air on the way out...

If we meet in the Stater Brothers parking lot (1662 Main Street, Ramona - between the Pizza Hut and Wendy's), it should take us about 2.5 hours to get to Chiriaco Summit going through Borrego Springs and up Box Canyon.  So if we meet at 0630 and depart by 0645 we should be there in plenty of time for the opening of the museum, even if we stop for fuel in Mecca (where it is cheaper than Chiriaco Summit).

Another traffic advisory, although this one is more for the I-10 goers from LA/OC/IE.... take note that the Stagecoach Music Festival is kicking off in Indio this weekend. On Saturday morning, there will likely be some traffic coming through the Coachella Valley as those who stayed local to the festival make their way to the polo grounds. I suppose that could affect some of you SD folk as you get closer to Mecca as well. It won't be as bad as the Coachella Festival over the previous two weekends, but there are still quite a few thousand people who attend Stagecoach. I was told by a buddy (who attends Stagecoach every year) that the Sunday afternoon traffic shouldn't be a huge issue for us, because the festival ends late on Sunday and most people don't leave until Monday morning.

Total off-road should be under 100 miles.  There is a gas station at our starting point, and one within five miles of where we hit pavement at the end.  I will be carrying 10 gallons, because it fits in my roof rack.  Not likely he will need to be in low range at any point on this trip, so he should be fine.

Worst/worst case, San Diego travelers can "drop down" to highway 86 from I-10 via highway 111...then hit the S22 westbound through Borrego Springs.

You can also exit to I-10 via Graham Pass, which takes you up to a short east-bound stretch on Chuckwalla Road to an entrance to I-10.  I don't know if it's actually labeled Graham Pass at the point where the road intersects the Bradshaw; google maps shows it as Niland Road then running into Graham Pass Road.  Then turn right (east) at Chuckwalla and parallel I-10 for short bit and you'll get to a freeway entrance.  It's been several years, but I remember Graham Pass as being quite scenic.

Have a great time everyone.  I thought I might be able to make it, but it does not look like it after all.

By the way, happy birthday in advance to Steve and Jake.

I'll keep my ears open for you SD Convoy guys on simplex 146.535 on my way out... maybe we'll intersect somewhere around the city of Coachella.

Sounds like you guys had an awesome time, sorry I had to miss it...I was in Ocotillo Wells yesterday doing a run with my father in law, and I'm almost sure I heard Tony's voice on HAM...I called out, but didn't get a response.  Meh...better luck next time.

Could be, if you were on 146.535, probably around 4 to 4:30.  We were blasting west toward home and I had cranked the radio up to full power to reach Jay & Jake, who were out ahead of us stragglers.
