Title: Hear Ye, Hear Ye, the desert is Open - Nov 2, 2016 to Nov 3, 2016 Ocotillo Wells
Post by: Celt on October 24, 2016, 07:27:29 PM
So after watching the desert temps like a hawk over the last month or two, I saw the first week of November drops from 90f by day to 78f and a balmy 50f by night. Since I don't like baking by day or night this is very good news. So I says to myself, "self" you need to call The Duffman. Well I call the Duffman and he says lets go. So here's the deal; Were meeting up at Dudley's Bakery on 11/02/16 at 1500. From there were going into the washes and set up a camp. There will be fireside pontification on various topics such as but not limited to world domination, the present state of the nanny state and general skullduggery to name but a few. From there we plan to get up whenever the next day, break camp and go exploring to see what the summers monsoon season has brought to bear. Anyone that wishes to go is welcome. Bring what you need and wood for the fire. No single malt or bug suits with three spare tires are required. We don't care if you have a HAM, CB, Hulk Walkie Talkies or just prefer to scream and frantically wave your arms and jump up and down to communicate. If you have a vehicle that kinda sorta runs and a good attitude you are welcome to attend.

P.S./Edit: Oh yeah I forgot to mention, we plan on coming back home sometime 11/03/16.

What are these "bug suits" that you speak of?  Perhaps a visual aid would be in order, to help us understand.  I would hate to show up under-equipped.

Yes, everything should be 2WD compatible. If you got into a small jam we have the capabilities to get you moving again.

I did a internet search and found this pic of a bug suit to give you an idea:

That is quite the look!  Except that his feet are exposed.
Not to mention that he will have a hard time getting laid, unless he pays for it.

HAHAHHAHAHAH, Yeah.....I did a quick google-fu search and that's the first thing that popped up. Maybe I should do a better job in the future.

However, I am off Thursday, so I might head out for some campfire visitation, no Scotch or Whiskey needed...

I'm pretty sure the desert never closes...some people are just too much of a wuss to go out when it's warm outside.

Holy Crap!

That can't possibly be real.  You must be screwing with us.  No one in their right mind would really dress like that . . . would they?

It's hard to tell for sure (I was afraid to look too closely) but it would appear that the hands are exposed as well.

That suit looks somewhat flimsy.  It might stop those Florida Zika bugs, but I'll bet something big, like the type found in, oh I don't know, maybe Alaska, would bore right through that thing.

Couldn't be for Alaska skeeters.  I hear they are so big they just carry you back to the nest to feed to their young.

Some men are warm blooded, and thus prefer the cooler climates.  I'd much rather wait until it's under a bajillion degrees outside; less bugs, and my sweat isn't sweating.

You are of course very welcome to meet up with us down there. If you can get out of work early-ish maybe you can jump down there. I'll make sure you get good directions to find us. It won't be turn right at the first cholla cactus off the road and right at the big rock with the crack in it either.

So the Duffman and I met up along with Jason and his son in his Taco and we headed down into Ocotillo. Temps were warm-ish when we got to camp. Set up camp before nightfall and in no time had a really nice fire going (Mucho El Thanks-O to Duffman for supplying the firewood) Duffman also constructed a Dakota fire pit just because and it worked very well. Since I'm a "slow cooker" it took me awhile to get the Dutch oven up and running but I believe all who partook of the dinner was well satisfied. Jason had to leave shortly after that so it was just the Duffman and I.

The temperatures never dipped below about 61 or so and there were no winds to speak of. I got a check in from home along with an updated local to our area weather report over the 2m which is pretty impressive as it's over 100 miles away. A few rum and somethings around the fire with great conversation about family and whatever else we could think of to while away the few hours before we both decided to get to bed and each climbed into our respective mobile homes for the night. I should add we didn't see or hear anyone else in the area which is always a plus.

Next morning we got up to a beautiful and very calm day. Broke camp and decided to head into Borrego Springs for a very hearty breakfast. Just after Christmas circle I had my eyes off the road but Duffman said there was a modded out X that passed us with a friendly wave and I just caught a glimpse of it in my rearview window. Right before we left the Kendall's restaurant, a young man came up and said he liked our Xterras and said he used to be an active SCCX Member. His name escapes me my but said he was about 16 years old when he owned his X and went on the trips. Maybe Duffman is better with names than I am? He remarked that was about 8 years ago and remembered Frank. Kind of a small world. We both headed home after that and kept each other company during the rest of the trip on the 2m radios while playing musical repeaters. All in all a very fun and mellow trip into the desert.

. . . .  BTW Frank, the kids name was Bruce something.

I had a feeling it might be Bruce Edly.  He's a really good guy.  He went on quite a few trips around Anza Borrego with us back then.  In his spare time he was always out hunting for snakes.  In fact, if you stop in to the Ocotillo Wells OHV Ranger Station and check out the color brochure they have on the snakes of the area, most of the photos are his.  He really knows his way around Anza Borrego and Ocotillo Wells.  He went on to get a degree in snakes (herpetology) or something like that.
