This is the preliminary post, to get people on notice of a potential trip. Sign-ups are not yet open. Vehicle and driver skill requirements have yet to be established. I haven't been on this trail in almost 15 years, so I need to do a recon to see what the conditions are like.

Do we have to bring a full body bug suit and single malt too?? In all seriousness, this looks like it's shaping up to be a really nice trip. I'm thinking about going up a day or two before and camping up at or near Whitney Portal then can jump down to Lone Pine for the meet up. Heck even the night before meet up for pizza and beers at Lone Pine Pizza. For anyone who hasn't experienced Lone Pine Pizza, well you haven't experienced it.

Looks like a great trip. Dang if it doesn't catch the end of GONE.

Or, you could go to this event and save the fuel money and convoy out to GONE with me the next year..........
-
Looks like tons of fun. After reviewing trail maps n such, I can say I won't be able to go since I do read (lockers may be needed). With that said I will continue working on my X, If by any chance I get some drivetrain sorted out (maybe rear locker upgrade) there could be a good chance. I'm not throwing the white flag yet, being positive and use this as an excuse to get my drivetrain sorted. Crossing my fingers boys!

Pretty sure im in.

If I'm here in '18, I'll still convoy with you. This is something I've been trying to get to for a long time. I also already have a reservation with a few other people for a condo.
This trip looks awesome, I might have to make a mini trip out there sometime.

For anyone interested in a bit of SCCX history in this area, here is a thread from the Pictures forum:
http://www.sccxterra.com/smf/index.php?topic=767.0 (http://www.sccxterra.com/smf/index.php?topic=767.0)
There was also an earlier trip in 2007 (and probably some others) but all those picture threads are gone.

I was just in Cerro Gordo Thursday night and all day Friday. Last time I was to the Salt Tram rear lockers would not be needed at all. I just did going down the backside of Cerro Gordo, up over Hunter Mountain to Tea Kettle Junction then to the Racetrack and over Lippinkott road to the Warm Springs then out through south pass without even remotely needing lockers.
-
In please.
-
Get the sign ups going...looks like there might be a race to get on board...myself included!
-
It sounds like a really stupid waste-of-time trip. I don't think you will find anyone willing to go, let alone fill up some quota.
But just in case... sign me up on the down low ;)
-
In for now...although work will be ramping up and I expect to be "in the mix."
Thanks for arranging Tony... :D

Be sure to read and follow the SCCX Xcursion Guidelines. In addition, here are a few of mine for this trip:
A) Rig requirements:
1) Good clearance, or thick skid plates (having both is preferred)
2) In generally good mechanical order
3) Good recovery points front and rear – in case we need to drag your mall-crawler chassis over some rock outcrops (see item #1)
4) Communications of some variety, in descending order of preference – ham VHF, FRS, CB, horn, whistle, smoke signal, sign language
B) Driver requirements:
1) Good attitude, especially when A3 is occurring
2) Generally self-sufficient
3) No whiners
C) Navigator/passenger requirements – driver’s responsibility:
1) Good attitude, and definitely when A3 is occurring
2) Generally self-sufficient
3) No whiners
The current plan is as follows: Saturday we will be travelling from Swansea up to our first camping site. This is the reverse, or tougher, way as gravity won’t be helping rigs get down ledges or obstacles (if there are any). It shouldn’t be too difficult, but it is a gain of 6,000 feet in less than ten miles (~15 road miles). We will NOT be hard-charging this trip. Saturday will be devoted to getting to the crest of the Inyo Mountains and finding the ideal camping site. If we depart Swansea by 1000 I expect we will be in camp by 1400, if not sooner. There will be plenty of time to stop for pictures, check out the geology, and be amazed at the ingenuity and determination of the folks that built the salt tram. We will be surrounded by “wilderness” and there are lots of hiking and exploring opportunities. Just watch out for light-headedness, over-exertion, dehydration, and other signs of altitude sickness. Sunday will be a drive along the crest south to the salt trams (~7 road miles) where we can spend a couple of hours exploring and having lunch. Then it is on down the road (~7 more road miles) to Cerro Gordo ghost town. Note that the crest trail is a shelf road in many places, and can cause severe (even debilitating) sphincter contractions. Those with weak dispositions should be medicated or blindfolded and muffled. We will camp east of the ghost town Sunday night. Monday, we will explore the town for a couple of hours, and then head back to pavement and home. The last section of dirt road from Cerro Gordo down to Hwy 136 is ~6 road miles long, but you drop almost a mile in elevation as well.
Location information: http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/inyo/recarea/?recid=21880
Friday night accommodations – you are on your own. I am staying in Lone Pine at the Comfort Inn. If you are in the vicinity and want to meet up for dinner, that would be great. Rooms are going fast, as it is Memorial Weekend. Alternatively, you could get up early on Saturday and drive directly from home to the trail head meeting at 0900.
Please post your number of persons/vehicles and send me a confirmation PM. Also note what type of comms you have or intend to use on the trip. I will be putting together a comm plan. There will be no name tags.

Just wanted to say thanks for setting this up Tony. The wife and I are in for sure! This is going to be an epic trip, and you are the man for tackling this. Let me know anything I can do to help coordinate along the way (you need me to make some nametags? :D)

Did not realize I was so universally celebated in SoCal.
Glad you all have a target. :)

Thanks for the reminder. I just booked my room at the Comfort Inn. There are now 4 rooms left according to booking.com at $140 a night. Better scoop one up quick if you're thinking about going! The $140 rate allows you to cancel all the way up until May 25th with no charge.
-
Still in and +1, i think i gave Jill enough notice that she should be going.

Just booked a campsite on the 25th in Lone Pine. Giddy up Bat Man this is gonna be an awesome trip!!!!!

Yes, it's the Lone Pine Campground. I would recommend anyone that is looking into camping in that area start checking for available sites in the area. Mt. Whitney is a huge draw starting around the time of this trip and it can be very difficult to get anything. I was actually going to look into Whitney Portal because I like that area so much but I didn't want to have to worry as much about bear proofing everything.
-
Booked...Site 8!

Nice, I was thinking about goin into Lone Pine Pizza for some vittles that night so I don't hafta do no cookin. If you have never been to Lone Pine Pizza, well you have never been there.

I was planning on having a mandatory dinner on Friday night where I will hand out the laminated name tags, communications plans, verify ham radio licenses, and perform vehicle minimum equipment and safety inspections. Then there will be a two hour briefing to go over the details of every turn and angle in the trail, using PowerPoint combining available still and drone photography. There will be a time-stamped sign-in and sign-out sheet. >:D
:o ::)
NOT!! This is not one of those trips. However, if folks are in town by then, pizza and beer sounds like a great idea. 8)

Old school member. Did this run back in 2005 with the new 2005 off-road Xterra. Had a blast with sccx. When my 6 month old daughter is big enough we plan on joining you guys again.
That quote below is why I ran away from this club, and I'm glad to see it's flushed down the toilet! Have fun guys!
Make sure you hit the bristlecone pine forest and drive down the back side for a gorgeous view of Death Valley.

Last set! Sccx used to be 20-30 rigs strong back in 2004-2008 with camping 6-10 times a year. I miss those days. We had a blast at Moab doing the Golden spike trail with sccx bac in 2006.

I really wanted to make a comment about that as I'm sure others do too. It's better for campfire talk with a cold beer and not mandatory single malt, oh wait dangit I started to go there. I digress, you are absolutely right and I think you would find just about any run we go on these days is very relaxed without much in the way of rules other than having a good attitude!
-
First of all, thanks for the photos and the tips! Gets me even more pumped about this trip.
Second, I can't agree more with Celt. I've heard many horror stories myself about previous things, and I'm happy that we've become a more laid back group since those times. I can't even remember the last time there was any drama around these parts! Runs tend to be very laid back, and the leaders of each trip are tasked with setting the expectation and limits for each trip. Some are designed for the newbies among us, who are just looking to socialize and get their tires a little dirty. And others (like this one) are designed for seasoned individuals who don't need much in the way of rules or instruction to contribute to a good time for all.
Anyway, great to see you posting up again! Maybe I'll get a chance to meet you and see you around. :D
-
Two months to go. ;)

HELL TO THE YA

If this was posted earlier, I apologize...any idea what the weather will be for that time of year in the areas that we are going?
-
I anticipate that the temperature where we will be camping Saturday & Sunday will be high 70s in the day, mid 40s at night. When we are 10 days out, I will be able to get a better forecast.

LOL, I think I can pull my connections with the Weather Channel 10 days out as well...was just wondering what the temperatures are average for that area.
-
There are no weather stations on top of those mountains. The campsite for Saturday is at about 9800 feet above MSL. Sunday night it is a little lower, around 7900 feet MSL.
-
They say you should be able to ski at Mammoth in July this year

HOLY CRAP! I just went online to look at hotels for Friday night. You'd think we were staying at some resort. I got one of the last two rooms at the Comfort Inn in Lone Pine and it's $167 per night. I looked at the $40 and $69 motels in Olancha and got scared away by the traveler pictures showing mold and filthy and tattered towels. If you are looking to stay over night in the area, i suggest you hit it soon. Otherwise you may end up in Lancaster.

So we're about 3 weeks out! Should we begin the food discussion? Are we pot lucking it, or are we on our own?

I need to drop out for an other engagement, not a better one for sure, just an other one :'(
Try to have fun without us.

This is an "on-your-own" trip. If you choose to bring or make something to share, that is entirely up to you. But I expect every vehicle to be self-sufficient on this trip. ;)
-
I'm going to bring fresh salmon that I caught the night before while ice fishing on the north pole.

Yesterday I spoke with Robert, one of the caretakers at Cerro Gordo and they will be expecting us Monday (Memorial Day) at around 10 a.m. They will open the buildings up and give us a tour. He says the nights have been down in the high 30s, low 40s but it should be warming up. There is not much snow left and it should be gone when we get there. They are all set for supplies so he suggested at least a $10/vehicle donation would be appreciated. I think we should step it up to $20 per vehicle.

$20 donation sounds great to me. Especially since they're going above and beyond to give us a grand tour. 8) I can't wait!
I also just noticed I'm listed as "+2" on the list. It will just be the wife and I, so please change to +1. We are also staying at the Comfort Inn on Friday night and will be in the Lone Pine area most of the day on Friday exploring. As far as comms, I'm HAM only these days. It's too hard to juggle two microphones on the trail, so no CB for me.

I'm still in, please add a +1 to mine.

Position is yours. Thanks for stepping up.

At best guess how many off road miles do you think this should be? I'm trying to calculate the firewood space/fuel space ratio.
I additionally found this info on fuel in Lone Pine and copied the least expensive place. I bet since it's a holiday weekend they will bump it up another .10-.15 per gallon.
Shell 350 S Edward St, Independence, CA 93526 Get Directions $2.889
Lone Pine:
$3.59 Chevron 1900 S Main St near CA 136
$3.09 Mobil 380 N Main St & E Willow St
$3.09 Shell 403 N Main St & Statham Way
-
There should be plenty of room for firewood. Extra fuel should not be needed. The loop is 35 miles off-road, according to this site:
https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/swansea-cerro-gordo-scenic-drive
"Rugged backway to Salt Tram Station and Cerro Gordo Ghost Town
This is a tougher alternate route to Cerro Gordo Ghost Town. The road climbs rapidly through a corridor through the Inyo Mountains Wilderness and runs along the ridge atop the Inyo Mountains. Great views, wildflowers and historical mining structures. Located in Inyo National Forest.
Steep, narrow and rocky in places. Last part of the route is a narrow shelf road. Prone to washouts and rock slides. Suitable for aggressive stock SUVs with high clearance, low range and skid plates. "
Everyone should bring at least two bundles of wood, one for each night. It is going to be cold at night, so the more wood the better.

Everyone should bring at least two bundles of wood, one for each night. It is going to be cold at night, so the more wood the better.
I will bring 2 extra bundles... You know how I feel about the mornings...

I may be back in if you'll have me. Should know today whether I can get a half day on Friday or not.

Folks in SD... What time were you thinking of heading up on Friday?

Steve, you could also leave real early Saturday morning and meet us at the trailhead.
Dale, I am going up Thursday - just because I can.
-
Dale - my wife and I are planning to leave Murrieta around 10:00 am. Like usual, I'll make a full day out of the trip up there without much of an agenda. Just exploring along the way. We do plan to spend some time exploring around the Lone Pine area before meeting up with the group for dinner, I'm thinking we'll hit the Alabama Hills area.
On that note - should we pencil in a time for dinner as a group?
-
How about 7 p.m.?
-
My son and i will be leaving the OC around 9 which should put us there near 2. Would like to in on the Friday festivities if that's ok.

I'm gonna try and leave around noon, just gotta give the boy a note to play hookey.
-
I think we are heading up around 10am...just to beat any traffic, and to just chill out. This trip is on the tail of a very exhausting last few weeks at work, so a little R&R is well needed.
-
One week to go. Weather is looking great. Lone Pine temps projected to be 90oF/60oF, so figure we will drop 20oF due to elevation.

Have you ever used a tent heater at the elevations we're going?
-
I have used the natural gas method. :D But I usually end up sleeping in the tent alone. :-[
-
Have you ever used a tent heater at the elevations we're going?
No. And I am taking my tent cot instead of the ShiftPod this trip.
-
Can't wait , I should be leaving San Diego around 10:00
where is everybody staying Friday ??
-
I'm staying at the Comfort Inn Thursday and Friday. Meet for pizza at 7 p.m. Friday at the Pizza Factory, 301 S Main St, Lone Pine.
-
Can I "couch surf" anyone's campsite? I'll chip in for fees.
-

So telling her to do jumping jacks and pushups to get warm wouldn't be the best option.
-
I'll let her know you said that, so when someone gets smacked, it won't be me.

Heh Heh Heh!!! Hey truth be known it was Jayrat who told me to say that.

I have used my Little Buddy heater in the bunkhouse at Cerro Gordo several times and had no issues. I usually carried it with me to the out house as well, might as well have as much comfort as is easily possible.

I dunno bout you guys but I'm getting pretty excited about this trip. It doesn't help that I have been going over threads on the internet about peoples trips and how they have their stuff setup. Speaking of that, is anyone bring their trailers that they have been working on?
-
Anybody with extra time, check out Randsburg it's only 1.3 miles off Hwy.395
if you haven't been there it's worth the visit.
-
Unfortunately, were out. :(
Im going through a career change and this trip falls right smack in the middle of it...actually this past 2 months has fallen right smack in the middle of it. I still need to wrap up some loose ends.

Last minute details: I am leaving San Diego at noon today, heading for Lone Pine and the Comfort Inn. Some folks are meeting Friday night for pizza at 7 p.m. in Lone Pine. Official meetup is Saturday morning (9 a.m.) at the trailhead, where we will air down, have a briefing, and check our communications. We will depart no later than 10 a.m. The weather is looking great. Remember your $20 donation for the Cerro Gordo folks.

So, what's the weather going to be like?
Need to know what to pack!
-
hard to predict due to all the weather stations are in the valley below and we will be at 9800/7800 ft. average is 3 degree drop for every 1000 ft of elevation gain, weather at 3000ft is going to be 85/55. I would say bring clothes...

No luck collecting fossils. Did a Recon of the first three miles of our route tomorrow. Not bad until you hit 3 miles. Turned around because I didn't have another person to spot and I hadn't aired down. About a hundred yards of challenging section but shouldn't be a problem for us.
-
Just got home, what an awesome trip! Everything went off without a hitch, amazing, amazing time with fantastic peoples! A trip I'll surely remember!!!
-
By far one of the best trips I've ever been on. The scenery and views are unlike anything. I can't wait to get some photos posted up. Thanks to everyone for the great time, and special thanks to Sage Bromax for putting the trip together and leading the way!
-
This was one of the most epic trips by far. The views, the history, and most importantly, the company. Katie and I couldn't thank you all enough for such an incredible trip we had. Can't wait until the next time!
