Title: Newborn car seat placement
Post by: 2013nick on August 26, 2016, 07:40:49 PM
The wife and I are getting ready for the baby this weekend and were wondering where (if anyone has) did you place your newborn car seat in the xterra?

Congrats nick. I put my 6 month old behind the passenger seat in an infant/portable car seat and my toddler behind me/driver seat.

Please feel free to ask me any questions or anything happy to help if possible.

i slapped my boy dead center in the back. I lean pretty far back so my seat acts like a support. my boy is now 8months old and no minding at all.

Wow thank you everyone! I ended up placing it in the middle and will most likely leave it there.  I had no idea Recaro made child seats haha

Congrats on the newborn!   Check your owners manual.  My 2007 said specifically to not place the seat in the center.

+1 on the manual. I believe they recommended rear passenger side. this allows for easy sidewalk/curbside access. As well as allows the 40% portion of the 60/40 rear seat to fold down.

mmmm interesting. When I bought my Recaro I had my local CHP station look at it to ensure its ok (wife's idea), and I got the thumbs up, thats with the seat in the center. Since my X didnt come with a manual, any of you gents willing to chime in with a pic of the section of the manual where it states the recommended position for a car seat? I want to show my wife.

Here is a link, after re-reading it does not specify a recommended position.

Typically, rear seat, rear facing in the center is safest.  However, the owners manual page 1-24, at least on mine says, "Do not secure a child restraint in the center rear seating position using the LATCH anchors.  The child restraint will not be secured properly."  So, I guess you might be able to use the center seat if you're using the seat belt.

I had my daughter in the rear center of the X for almost two years.  When my second daughter was born I was trying to figure out how to keep one of them in the middle and couldn't figure out a good way to do it which is why I looked at the manual.  I was surprised to see I had done it wrong for two years.  My other vehicles do recommend using the middle but for whatever reason on my generation X it says not to.

Just want everyone to be safe!
