Someone said "Set a date!"
So I did.
What: Family friendly camping, mountain biking, hiking, socializing, hanging out, cooking, exploring, geocaching...stuff you do outdoors, etc. etc. etc.
Where: Mt. Laguna Campground, off of Sunrise Highway in San Diego.
When: Friday, August 5th, through Sunday, August 7th
Book your reservations at this link:
Mt. Laguna/Reservation.gov Site (http://www.recreation.gov/camping/laguna/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=70576)
Please post here or PM me with your site number so I can update things and stay semi-organized.
As of 6/14/2016 there are five reservable campsites available in the Meadow Loop of the CG.
Sites 007, 009, 016, 019, 021
The Shady Loop (close by) has even more. These are all withing good walking proximity of each other if we get a big response, but with 2 vehicles and 8 peeps per site, if this works out, the Meadow Loop would accommodate 12 vehicles and 48 people...per the guidelines below.
The cost is $23.00 per night, and the details are:
Site Type: STANDARD NONELECTRIC
Site Reserve Type: Site-Specific
Checkin Time: 2:00 pm
Checkout Time: 1:00 pm
Type of Use: Overnight
Min Num of People: 1
Max Num of People: 8
Max Num of Vehicles: 2
Driveway Surface: Gravel
Driveway Entry: Back-In
Max Vehicle Length: 35
Shade: Partial
Capacity/Size Rating: Single
Fire Pit: Y
Sharing sites is a good way to save a little $$$
This is a nice CG, with water bibs scattered throughout the CG, pit toilets in the Meadow Loop, but showers and flush toilets available within walking distance if you want cush for your tush. And the showers are nice, $1.50 for 6 minutes of sunscreen cleansing joy...and are clean.
Each site has its own fire ring, a drive in spot for two rigs (knightrider and I have shared a site here, there is plenty of room), and most spots are shaded by trees. All campsites are within walking/riding distance to the singletrack...Big Laguna Trail, Penny Pines, sections of The Pacific Crest Trail, Noble Canyon...the list goes on. The trails here are...awesome. Not really any wheeling to be had near the CG...but this trip isn't so much about that. It's more about getting outdoors together and hanging out and camping...
There is a local store in Mt. Laguna, about 2 miles south of the CG for e-supplies, and the town of Julian is a 20 minute drive north if you need more pie for your hole...but winners stop on the way in to grab a Dutch Apple @ Julian Pie Co. to gnosh by the fire.
Speaking of fires...firewood is available from the camp host as well. Or you can stop in Ramona and pay less there. Either way, firewood is a non issue.
Hopefully this covers most of the Q's...but post up or PM me if you need more info.
Look forward to seeing everyone who can make it! :) :) :)

What kind of trails are around?
The kind that make a man go 'HOLY OMG WTF WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA THAT WAS BADDDDD ASSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!'
(i think)
-
Yea what Christiaan said. There is everything from mild to wild.
Noble canyon is probably the most wild well known trail out there but there is a ton of single track and normally not too many hikers and horses.

-
mostly for all mountain bikes or is there some DH sections?
-
It's all mountain. Some people will take their DH bikes to ride down noble and shuttle back up but there is a loop you can ride as well

There's also another loop...Shady...with availablity.
-
What kind of trails are around?
The Los Gatos Trail downhill section is pretty damn fun...nothing too ledgy, but a few log obstacles and super swoopy bermed out downhill sections.
I see you like lifts...none of that here. ;) We pedaled up hill on nice single/double track for a good 45/60 minutes to get (#because50) the top...not too bad.
Jordan, Daphne and I hit it last time up there, and it was a blast. Mild to wild...like Jordan said...it's all about the arm pump. ;)

Went night riding with...knightrider...last night and the PQ Crew...pretty damn fun and a quick pace for 15 swoopy and lit miles. You will like Laguna Hennie, not sure if you've been there before. Lots of cool trails.
Shaping up to be a good Shin dig
Yes sir...closer to the date, we will need to put together some kind of cook plan. ;) ;)
My lovely wife/Santa hooked me up with a Dutch Oven and I've been itching to burn it with something.
Hope to have a few practice runs before this trip.
I'm in.
Awesome Steve...see you soon! :) :)

Just to elaborate....there will be at least 2 of us (me and JayRat) doing a day hike or two during the day Saturday.....so, if you don't own a bike, don't let that prevent you from coming...should be a great time outside!!!!

I had a couple of Schwinn Sting Rays. First one was a red single-speed. Totaled it on the front of a slowly moving late-50's era sedan in about 1968-69. Second one was a green three-speed, with banana seat, stick shift, and a wide slick for the rear tire.

I'm missing out on this one, the kids and I will still be on our road trip til about Saturday :( You guys have a blast
-
Reviving this thread as its about 4 weeks out...everyone still in and committed to their camp?
Daphne and I spent July 4th doing a little trail recon and knocked out about 15 miles of loopy singletrack...it's gonna be good whether you decide to hoof it or tread it. The weather was great and the loops were sparce with other humans...kinda nice. :)
Also...on the topic of MTB riding...since this is a group ride (I'm thinking one big group ride on Saturday and spur rides on Friday/Sunday organized when we meet) we will ride as fast as the slowest rider. The trails we will be tackling (mostly the Big Laguna Trail, but sections of Noble Canyon and a couple others) are novice with dashes of intermediate thrown in (a few rocky sections, some roots and off camber stuff) for good measure and growth.
This is meant to be fun, so please don't worry about keeping up or slowing the group...stopping and admiring the scenery is the bonus here. We will all have different bikes/fitness levels/experience to bring to the pedals, so lets keep it real on the group ride and you can zoom with smaller groups before/after Saturday.
I will say it again...the emphasis here is fun...and there is no such thing as a dumb question.
Ask me here or PM me, and I'll gladly help/get back ASAP. :) :)

Can't wait for it, the family and I are looking forward to fresh air and good company

What trail are you planning?
-
What trail are you planning?
Big Laguna Trail...to Penny Pines trailhead, then loop back and head down to the Sunrise Highway trailhead, and loop back up to camp.
We have ridden this loop several times, and it is about 13-15 miles. Beginner to intermediate skill levels...buff single-track to roots and rocks.
We will ride with pacing to the slowest rider...leaving no one in the dust.
This group ride is for fun...feel free to coordinate other rides during our time up there.
Los Gatos Ravine is a cool DH trail that intersects the lower Big Laguna for those that prefer drops and obstacles. (There are bypasses too)
I'll post up a map shot of the proposed route later...but I'm sure you can source the area on several websites before that as recon.

What is everyone's food plan? group thing or everyone planning to do their own thing?
I was going to do a beef stew in the slow cooker for the family Saturday nite, but it would be my pleasure to take care of the group if interested
-
We will throw out the PBP/syrup thing for Sunday morning...if anyone wants to bring meats I'll have a hot griddle going.
-
A couple of final notes...
- pit toilets are close to the campsites...bring a roll of your own if you don't enjoy USFS 2 ply
- the pits are convenient (flush toilets/showers are a 5 minute walk) but full of flying insects...I'm bringing a can of RAID for the can.
- ice is available at the Mt. Laguna Store about 3 miles south of the campground...they close around 5pm so plan accordingly. They also have beer and camp supplies, but you will pay "mountain prices", like a $12 six pack of Corona, or the $17 can of white gas, ask me how I know. ;) ;) :D :D
There are also supplies available in Julian and Ramona on the way in. See if you can find my secret $3 a bundle of firewood/liquor store... ;)
- last gas is in Julian...if you need it.
That's about it...see you in the mountains!

Being as I've never been here before and I worry about things, can someone keep the ham on to 146.535 and listen for my cries for help?
I should be arriving between 2:30 and 3:30pm.
Steve, if you guys program in 147.150 + 102.2 you will get coverage from all over that mountain to include San Diego and well into the desert. Might be a good thing to know.....

Steve...that's it. Very easy to find. If you hit the Mexico border...turn around.

See you tomorrow.

Just an FYI: the annual Perseid meteor showers have started and are supposed to be especially good this year. Tonight should be pretty good, as there won't be much moon. It peaks later in the week, but so does the moon. Best viewing will be in the eastern sky, after 11 p.m.

Too bad it's hotter than the hinges of hell in the desert. It would be a good time to get down into those washes for a couple nights. I'm sure they will get a great view from there in Laguna as much of the city lighting will be blocked by the western portion of the mountains and the marine layer.

Group ride photo...thanks Jayrat!
Had a great time camping and riding with friends. It was great to see some familiar faces and relax at the Laguna CG.
Sorry we had to pull up stakes early, Daphne's resting and hopefully feeling better soon. Thanks for all the help breaking camp and for all the kind wishes. Sucks to be sick in camp.
Hope we can all do this again sooner than later.

Had alot of fun riding with new people and getting lost in Laguna :D

Legs are still sore...yeah, I'm a wuss.
Thanks Ghost for setting this up. We were bummed Daphne wasn't feeling well but getting her home was the right thing to do. I was also able to pillage your portion of Sat night dinner ;)
Hope she's feeling better.
Hennie, your team was 5 star all the way. Easily the nicest people I've ever met. I came home telling Mary all about the beef jerky you make. Jay, always a blast. It's nice seeing you in Dad mode. Your son is awesome. Steve, great time filled with laughs as ways. Jordan and Jill, Thanks for the grub. You saved me from a can of monster and a bag of trail mix.
Till next time.....

Thanks John for organizing this, it was a fun weekend with a great group of people. Hope Daphne feels 100% soon.
Great job Danny being brave enough to try all the foreign food flavors, hope your stomach's fine :)
Jordan did a excellent job getting us "un-lost" and back to camp in just over 17 miles in what felt like 100deg (it was probably less, but it felt like 100)
Steve, Jay...good hanging out with you guys, looking forward to seeing you again on the next trip

What's next?
Hurkey Creek in Idyllwild?

Are there mtb trails there?
-
Hurkey Creek is where the "24hrs of Adrenaline" races used to be held. There's a 10 mile loop that starts and stops at camp.
