Title: Oldsmobile
Post by: JFanaselle on June 07, 2016, 03:27:24 PM
Well, the Olds is getting attention on the web again. Just wanted to toss it up on here as a reminder that we need to get up there as a group and do something about this beast.

I found these photos and description (incorrectly calling it a Pontiac) on the Trails Offroad page for 2N02. Funny thing is... I think the jeeps in this photo might be the guys who were up there when we pulled this thing to the road from the ditch? :o I guess that would explain why they know the back story.

Anyway, I'll be up there this weekend (taking 2N02 up the mountain from Pioneertown for a family camping trip in Fawnskin), and will give the road a good patrol and quick cleanup of any obvious trash. I'll report back what this beast looks like on Monday, but I expect it to look exactly like it does in these photos.

Has anyone checked for a vin and Contacted the sherriff about it?  Unless someone has a trailer and winch it will have to be cut up to move but that's no good cause of danger from sparks

IIRC, it's half an Olds anyway, so the cutting in half part is already done

Title: Re: Oldsmobile

Yes. SCCX already led an expedition up there a few years ago (before I was around) and cut it in half with a torch and hauled the rear half out. The front half was left behind to be recovered during a follow-up trip, but someone pushed it back down the side of the hill down into a steep ravine before the group could get back up there for it.

It took a long time before a large enough group was able to pull it back up to the road, but Toro finally got the job done last year during a large Rattlesnake Canyon trip when there was plenty of help on hand. Once up at the road, we dragged it a few hundred feet to a turnout where it won't impede traffic, and it's sat there ever since. The next step is to get it on to a trailer and haul it a few miles down the road to an area where people will actually come pick up scrap. If we don't get it out of there soon enough, eventually some jack-hole will come push it down the side again, making it even harder to recover.

The San Bernardino National Forest has a bunch of equipment available for use as part of the adopt a trail program. Does anyone know if they have a trailer that we can use to haul this thing down the hill? (Celt? Motorpig?) If not, maybe I can rent something from U-Haul or something. The only trouble with U-Haul is the risk of having to pay a bunch of money if the trailer gets dented or scratched or something.

The only trailer that I have access to is the one I borrow from my buddy to trailer the X to places like Moab or the Sierras. I'd be a little leery of buggering it up dragging the olds up and off of it so I suppose I'm not much help on this. On the last AAT email I received from Greg is the Olds is on the agenda to try and figure out how to properly deal with it. Since SageBromax is attending that meeting like he posted I'm hopeful someone could volunteer something suitable. I do have a nice F-350 diesel that I can get involved in the mix, several winches and an oxy torch but I'm afraid that's about as far as I can help equipment wise.

We have a trailer at The Shop, but it's a Dove tail. It is also leaf sprung and it sits really low. The back end tends to drag on driveways. Let me know if you guys think it will work. I may be able to look into some other trailers also.

Actually, a low slung dovetail would be handy to drag that carcass up onto.  I'm available this Saturday.

Probably not handy on the trail, will probably drag on every rock and little rut.

True.  But the trail isn't as bad from the bottom up as it is from the top down.  The tricky part would be getting it turned around once we were at the Olds.
Title: Re: Oldsmobile
Post by: JFanaselle on June 15, 2016, 09:50:59 AM
Tricky might be an understatement. The only way it would work is if it's short enough to do a zero radius turn on the trail. We'd have to disconnect it from the rig that was towing it, turn it around by hand, and hook it up to another rig that was behind it. That could work though.

I just ran 2N02 over the weekend, from Pioneertown all the way to the top. The Olds is in the exact same place, in the exact same condition. The road isn't bad, but this was the first time I was paying close attention to how easy it would (or wouldn't) be to get a trailer up there. My original thought (before running it again this weekend) was to come down from the top, but I'm not sure that's such a great plan anymore. I agree with Jordan - there's no way a low-riding trailer is going to get this done, even coming up from the bottom. We'd need something with halfway decent ground clearance so we're not dragging it across every little obstacle, especially if it's longer than 8 feet or so.

Here's the Olds as of Friday:

That Olds-Pontiac-Buick whatever is my arch nemesis. I am fed up with this ugly hunk of rust.  It is my mission, my Moby Dick!
I will go up there on any Monday-Thursday and cut it to pieces if I have to, and get it to the pick-up site.
Who else can make a weekday happen?

Seems like Mondays are looking good... If we're still looking at a weekday, I would likely be able to take a Monday off from work if I know the date at least a week or two in advance. As long as I'm not scheduled to be out of town or something.

I'm 90% in at this point, just need final confirmation from my boss that I have the day off (that confirmation should come by the end of today).

Some thoughts about meeting place/time:
1) I'm 15 miles north of I-15 and Mission Road, so my proposal would be to meet further north. There's a big Shell gas station off of I-215 at Los Alamos Road with a nice parking lot that would work great. My suggestion would be to meet here. If you guys still prefer to meet further south, I'll just have to try and join up with the group when you're passing through Murrieta (we'd be in contact on the radio anyway, so this is do-able).
2) As far as timing - there will be some pretty bad traffic going through Riverside, especially near the 215/60 interchange and UCR. Unfortunately, the best time to get started with the day is also the worst time for traffic. That being said, I still think our best bet is to get started as early as possible and just suck it up as we sit in traffic for 30 mins or so. How does 7:30 am sound to everyone? That would give me a comfortable time-line to get the boy dropped off at preschool, get some food in my belly, and still meet up with the group.

Final thought - do we need to make the AAT folks aware of our plans at this point? We could end up having the trail obstructed for the better part of a couple hours, and I just want to make sure we're not causing any more headaches than we need to. That being said, it would also suck to have unnecessary "oversight" breathing down our necks the whole time, so it's a double edged sword for sure. You're call Randy, just something I was thinking about.
Title: Re: Oldsmobile
Post by: RBduffer on July 12, 2016, 01:57:20 PM
That's good news Joe, fingers crossed.
Your Shell station makes more sense and 7:30 is fine with me.
Weekday trail traffic should be low.  In any case I don't want to involve the AAT boys.  As you said 'Oversight'.
Thanks for all the good input.
Title: Re: Oldsmobile
Post by: Celt on July 12, 2016, 05:38:32 PM
If I could voice my .02 in this even though I cannot attend, I think you guys should just get out there and remove it without anyone calling in. We are the ones responsible for this trail and have full permission to maintain it including that Olds that's been the topic of many a conversation. That being said, please record everyone's hours from door to door and post them up and I can get them recorded.
Title: Re: Oldsmobile
Post by: JFanaselle on July 13, 2016, 07:22:17 AM
My 90% is now a confirmed 100%. See you guys Monday morning at 7:30 am! The address for the Shell station is:

39614 Los Alamos Road
Murrieta, CA 92563

If you're northbound on I-215 and exit at Los Alamos Road, just make a right and it's on the right hand side - you can't miss it. There's a Starbucks and a Cotijas Mexican Restaurant directly a cross the street, in case anyone arrives early and wants coffee or a breakfast burrito.  O0

Randy - will you have the trailer already, or are we making a trip into Hemet to grab it on the way?

I'm bringing my little bro along as well. Brady was there when we winched it back up to the road last year, and he wants to come help us finish the job. He's got a nice dewalt 7 inch angle grinder that we'll bring too, since you guys are bringing the electricity. I just need to run over to Harbor Freight this weekend and grab some cutoff wheels for it. They throw sparks like crazy and I'd rather not use it if we don't have to, but I'd still rather have it if there's a particularly stubborn piece that we're trying to cut and the sawzall won't do it. I also have a nice sawzall I'll bring, and I'll bring some jack stands and 2x4s for cribbing, in case we need to brace or stabilize the Olds in any kind of weird position to help us load it up or cut it. I'd just rather be over-prepared than underprepared. Plus some straps, my winch (sounds like we'll have 4 or 5 winches up there!), oh and of course a fridge full of ice cold drinks. :)

Agreed. Just bringing it in case we end up in a situation where we have a stubborn piece that needs a couple seconds of attention, for example. I'd rather have it and not use it than leave it at home and decide that we needed it. But yes, reciprocating saws are absolutely the way to go with the current fire danger, and I'm bringing my reciprocating saw too  O0

I really like all the heads up thinking going on here.

I am bringing 2 fire extinguishers and a water sprayer (for any embers).  We all should have extinguishers in our rigs already.

There will ALWAYS be at least one man with extinguisher in hand during all and any spark making.  I've worked in oil refineries and many fire controlled areas.  I am absolutely confidant that this crew will have no issues.  And nobody is more fire conscience than Joe.  If we don't agree that it's safe, we will not do it.

Lets move on to the beer (which also puts out fires) >:D

Great job guys!!! Please let me know everyone's hours so I can get them reported in. I'm sure Ranger Greg is going to be very happy because that Olds seems to have been the bane of the Park Service's existence on that trail. I put the word using some smoke signals giving you guys some public credit with the AAT Forums, again AWESOME!!!!

Bye bye Oldsmobile:

After we off-loaded the trailer, my brother and I broke off from the group and explored the Viscera Springs area for a bit. Our intent was to scout the area for the upcoming SCXF/SCCX trip on July 31st:

This was the most time I've ever spent exploring the area, and I love it out here. We found some awesome old structures:

We also found a really awesome mineshaft to explore:

At the end of the long hard day, we celebrated by trying a new (to us) place in Yucca Valley...

The verdict? It's my new favorite place to eat in this area.  8)

For those of you who would rather watch this entire operation go down in 39 seconds, I created a timelapse. Enjoy!  O0

Joe, you have outdone even yourself this time!  Time lapse with tunes is great.

And, I forgot to give a very special thanks to Clint, for trusting a bunch of clods with his most excellent trailer.  We would still be up there now if we had to cut up the Olds into bite size pieces.  His stupid schedule would not let him make this trip, but he was kind enough to deliver his trailer to my carport last week.  Thank again everyone.
