What GPS devices does everyone use here?   Or what apps for your phones work the best?

Do you have off road maps loaded onto it?   Were you using it on TMR?

If you've got a big fat wad of cash burning a hole in your pocket, the Magellan TRX7 (http://www.magellangps.com/Vehicle-Navigation/Magellan-eXplorist-TRX7-Off-road-GPS-Navigation) is awesome.

I bought a cheap refurb ASUS tablet from Woot for $79.  The key with cheaper tablets is to make sure it has a GPS chip, many don't.  I also made sure the resolution of the screen was good enough, mine is 1280x800.  You'll also want to make sure it has a microSD slot for expanded memory.  You have to manage maps with Back Country Navigator (BCN) as well.  A friend of mine already had much of the areas I ever go to (Mojave Preserve into Nevada) downloaded and they added up to ~25 GB.

I added a piece of wood to the tray above the radio and screwed some plexi to it so a suction mount will work there.  This is the mount I bought for $10, it looked like it was flexible enough and it has worked well even on extreme rocky roads.

 I'll take a picture tonight.

I'm running an Asus Nexus 7 tablet, I think I paid about $150 for it. I bought a cheap mounting bracket that is made just for it from ebay and re-worked it using some parts I had lying around to mount it to the dash right about where the passenger airbag light is.

As this thread has to do with modern(25 yrs old) technology, I wouldn't expect you to understand any of this.

True, but I can still intersection and resection the heck outta my location on a map. One of these days if one of you techie types can sit down with me and show me how this all really works I might jump on the band wagon. It just seems like everything costs a heck of a lot of money then you have to spend more money to store more electronic maps. My issue is I never know where I will be travelling to so it's just easier for me 9 times out of 10 to get a paper map.

but if you don't know where you'll be going, how do you know to pick up a paper map of that location?  ???

Anybody have any more recommendations on tablets.  I'm kind of liking this jeepers setup:  https://youtu.be/9YnIK9HxKjs its a Galaxy tab 4 with bluetooth mouse.

I use a bluetooth unit to supplement the GPS on my phone or tablet as it keeps the battery on the phone from draining quickly. This is the unit I use to log data on my autocross car, it has a 10Hz update rate which is good for better resolution at speed. Most all tablets and phones use a 1Hz update rate for the GPS.

I ended up getting a Galaxy Tab A 8" (Costco was blowing them out) and installing backcountry navigator.  I'm cheap so I'm piecing together a mounting system using used RAM parts off eBay.
