Title: Socal 2m and 70cm Repeaters
Post by: Toro on December 20, 2015, 12:11:35 AM
Been working on something and I finally broke through. I've been able to create .KML (Google earth) files of 2m and 70cm repeaters in SoCal.

These are coordinate based and contain output freq, offset direction and tone. .KML allows you to overlay this onto many GPS or Topo maps and can easily be converted to .GPX and loaded onto Garmin devices.
One of the issues I have, as a casual user, is not knowing which repeaters are near by. You can import the file, and visually see what repeater is closest to your location. I have been using "Backcountry Navigator" for Android devices for several years and this .KML works perfect with it.
I would like to make these available to SCCX members.

Now for the D-Bag part.

I ask you to use discretion with these files. It took a lot of resources to make this happen and would appreciate it if we kept them in the SCCX family. The original data file was pulled from www.repeaterbook.com and anyone who uses these files should make a donation to the maintenance of this data. A link to a PayPal account can be found on their home page.

If your interested in this, shoot me a PM with your email address and beer next time we cross paths. I will email you the file.

There are two files. One for 70cm and one for 2m. Since I'm working with raw data, I can do anything with them...even combine them into one. (But they get cumbersome)
The repeaters included are registered in
-Inyo
-Kern
-Los Angeles
-San Diego
-Riverside
-SanBenardino
-Imperial
.......counties.

I pulled counties on the fly and if I'm missing anything south of Los Angeles, you can let me know and I'll update the data base.

PM sent...interested.

I would encourage all who participate in this to follow Toro's instructions and kick some duckets Repeaterbook's way...most of them are just like us, a selfless organization in it for the betterment of others.

As soon as I can figure out what an .KML file is... ::)

Very nice!  Getting a new Garmin for Christmas so this will be real handy.  Too bad there isn't a way to load data like this (and topo maps) into the stock on-board nav system in the X.

Awesome stuff Toro! I'm interested in kicking them a few bucks as well, PM inbound

I might need your help importing the file into backcountry navigator though... that's still all greek to me. :)

Thanks all,
If anyone would like to see any other repeater bands or coverage of other areas, let me know and I'll put it on my todo list.

After re-reading the OP, I finally had my breakthrough on getting this to work on my Garmin.  haha "Convert to .GPX."  I managed to miss this the first 20 times I read this thread.  Thanks again, Danny.
