Title: Cooper Discoverer STT PRO
Post by: ShockBlue_Scott on December 18, 2015, 06:12:34 AM
So I've been needing new tires for awhile. After doing some research of several tires all in 265/75-16 Goodyear Duratrac, Toyo Open County RT, General Grabber AT2, and both the Cooper Discoverer STT PRO and MAXX I picked the Cooper STT PRO.

My initial concern was they were going to be louder then the General Grabber AT2 that I had previously due to the aggressive tread pattern. I read several reviews on the but the review on http://expeditionportal.com/exclusive-cooper-discoverer-stt-pro-review/ (http://expeditionportal.com/exclusive-cooper-discoverer-stt-pro-review/) gave a good review and based on him stating that there was only a 1 decibel increase over his other tires that was the deciding factor.

So yesterday I had my appointment to get the tires installed. Cosmetically the truck looks a lot different and I believe it sits about an inch higher as well. As far as noise there is a noticeable him but not bad, maybe a few decibels louder then the old Generals. But to quote my wife "they sound the same to me" was a win for me. I've only noticed a louder hum turning but overall I have really enjoyed these tires. We're taking the X north for Xmas and I'm honestly hoping to hit some snow to see how they deal with snow or even rain.

I will post some pictures later

Awesome Scott, those are the tires I'm going to get when I'm ready for a new set. You're going to love them off road.

You'll love the tires. They hum a little but not like your normal MT tires

update 1/31

Good evening. Today I went shooting up on some BLM land here is San Diego, south of South Bay Rod and Gun Club. The roads were wet from the heavy rains and there were a few "new" creeks across the road.

Eventually we made it to our destination. We were off the main road in a marked dirt trail, the ground was nice and wet/muddy. The entrance to the area has some large rock and ruts, I was thinking about shifting into 4H just in case. But as I approached the rocks and ruts the tires felt good. There was no slipping as we climbed over the rocks. As we arrived where we shot at it appeared there were other people there prior to us, you could see where they got stuck or spun their tires. The ground was pretty saturated, but again these tires did not fail and I was able to negotiate the soft mud without getting into 4H or 4WD for that matter.

Nice review. Having tires that do well on the road AND in mud is pretty rare. Sounds like these are some good tires.  8)

update 2/2/16

In my review I forgot to mention that I checked the tire pressure prior to going out Sunday. The yahoos that installed the tires inflated them to 37 psi. I dropped the pressure down to the recommended inflation rating on the door jam of 32 psi. The ride has gotten better but I hear more of the tires. I am not sure if its due to more of the blocks making actual contact on the road.

Sunday I did notice a smoother ride on the dirt road and a little more grip due to the lower pressure. Where I was does not really warrant dropping the air pressure any lower, plus I do not have an on board air compressor.

Future plans have me getting an on board air compressor (mobile/installed) and going on trips that may require airing down.

This is the compressor I have. It's been good to me especially for the price. It's pretty bulky so I plan to upgrade eventually. But it does the job for $100. The hose sucks so I'm going to get a new hose soon but it fills my 33's from 10 - 35 psi in less than 3 minutes.

How tall is it? I have a storage/drawer area in the back and I plan on swapping out the top plywood for one that goes out to the plastics on both sides and the back of the rear seats. I would like to put something under the wood as I will use the top section for the dogs or luggage.

It's about 9" tall. It's definitely not the smallest compressor, but it's pretty fast.
