Title: New member in San Diego
Post by: Riz98 on December 08, 2015, 01:35:47 AM
Hey everybody.  Long time Nissan owner getting back into the 4x4 world.  A couple years ago I bought a 2006 Subaru Sti (which is for sale if anyone is interested) which was a lot of fun.  Long story short, kids are getting much bigger now and the small car has to go.  Recently picked up a 2002 Xterra with a good amount of mods.  I know, I know buying someone else's project isn't always the best idea but this thing is solid.  Looking forward to meeting a lot of you and definitely hitting the trails. Previous nissans were a 1986.5 Hardbody 4x4 and a 1998 Frontier with a SLR suspension lift.            Jake

Welcome from the High Desert. The Gen 1 is easy to mod and I'm sure you can make it your own from this "solid" starting point. I hope to see you on the trail soon.

Welcome from Moreno Valley/Riverside: if you know that the previous owner took good care of the X, it should be as solid as ever. I got my 02 with 92k miles (the first owner kept a detailed log of all maintenance) , I've put on almost 100k more miles on it, and it runs just as well as I got it , doing all the normal maintenance as scheduled.

That's for the welcome's.  Its nice to see an active Nissan 4x4 forum again.  The others I am on are pretty slow for responses.  Yeah the previous owner did take really good care of the X and all maintenance is up to date.  I got it with 102,000 miles and the engine runs great.  So far took it out once to Ocotillo Wells and had a good time.

Hey Jake, is this rig the silver SAS'd first Gen? If it is, you bought your rig from a GREAT starting point! Is the the rig that HBDesert was selling last year?

Yes it is the rig that HBDesert was selling last year.  So far everything is working great.  Had it in for an alignment and the track bar was shortened to center the axle and a caster shim was put in the right side so it tracks nice and straight.  Makes for a great camping/family wheeling rig.

Nice! Do you know if it is locked up, limited slip, or open?

I love my first Gen. The two big problems with them are the suspension (which has already been taken care of and you should not have to touch unless you want to go crazy huge) and the lack of horse power. But the engine produces a good amount of torque and the non-supercharged engine that you have is very reliable.

You bought a really nice rig.

Yeah it is locked front and rear with ARB air lockers.  Very capable so far especially with the Calmini 3.92:1 crawler gears.  I was at the Ocotillo wells training area going down some steep descents in 1st gear with 4low and didnt have to use the brakes.  I am not concerned about horsepower for now, but just cruising around in it.  I sold my 2006 Sti before i bought this so I got my fix for speed out of the way.  A very fun car but got a little tight with the kids getting bigger.

Exactly the same reasons I sold my 06 WRX wagon. The x is a great family hauler and a ton of fun off road.  Welcome to SCCX!

Yeah things were getting tight in the Sti sedan but going up to Big Bear was a blast in that thing.  It was protuned at 300hp/330torque to the wheels.  Nothing crazy but it made for a fun daily driver.  I was looking for a nice 07 Forester XT but those are pretty rare and the people selling them had already modified them too much for my liking.

I'll keep an eye out for you.  I saw a couple modded Xterras up in Big Bear this last weekend and waved but just got some weird looks back.
