Title: CANVAZ V 10/10 and 10/11 Planning and Final Coordination
Post by: Toro on September 26, 2015, 10:50:07 AM
Hello All,
With CANVAZ fast approaching, I have reached out to Jason (Deadpilot) and have been given the blessing to help with the final planning of this event. Unfortunately, Jason's monster will not be ready and has chosen to pass on attending. Needless to say, we were all looking forward to hanging with this monster rig and are bumbed you won't be making it. We appreciate everything you've done thus far and thank you for all the time and effort you've put in.
This thread will be merged with the original and the planning will coninue.
.......with out further adieu.........

CANVAZ is a joint get together between California (CA), Nevada (NV) and Arizona (AZ). There is a rotation and every year a different state takes the reigns and hosts the event for others to attend. This year is CA's turn to host the event. Although our rigs exist all across our state, the south is where most of the rigs are and SCCX is hosting.
The location is the mountain town of Big Bear CA. The date is Saturday Oct 10th & Sunday the 11th with an option for Monday the 12th (Columbus Day).
As most of you know, BigBear is a wheelers paradise with trails for all skill and rig levels. For the SAS'ed group on 37's, Johnson Valley (KOH) is about an hour away.
The Lake sits at just under 7000ft and most of the camping is in the hills above the lake, so be ready for a cold October. There are also a verity of cabins tucked into the forest and a few motels and rustic lodges. I spend a lot of time there so feel free to ask any questions or just bring a warm sleeping bag and a sense of adventue.

A camping thread has been started by my co-Dawg Christiaan and can be found here
http://sccxterra.com/smf/index.php?topic=3294.0

Friday night potluck meet and great thread started here
http://sccxterra.com/smf/index.php?topic=3326.0

There will be a veriety of trails for all rig and skill levels.

Green trails - Minor to no modifications required

Blue trails - Minor mods recommended.
                      lift, tires, sliders.

Black trails - Must be bit by the modbug. add bumpers skid plates and one locker.
The ultimate decision on trail requirements will be up to the descretion of that trail leader. No if, ands or buts.

ALL RIGS MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE FRONT AND ONE REAR RECOVERY POINT.
Do not become the bowel obstruction on the trail. Your carelessness or disregard for this will impact others ability to enjoy themselves.
A full size spare and the ability to change a tire on uneven ground is a must.

1st trail run will be on Saturday the 10th and if there is enough interest, groups can run into Monday. There may be a evening run. For those who want to use all those lights we buy, this is a great opportunity to make it happen.

Post up your suggestions for the trails, questions and comments you may have.

I would like to petition to make the Vons the meet spot for all runs.
Not only will everyone have access to last min supplies but part of the purpose of this event is the comradary and crap talking that goes on. Having everyone together in one spot allows everyone to meet each other, gives people the opportunity to chicken out and change trails.

Thanks for taking the lead on the final planning details Danny, and thanks to Jason for putting the initial planning together to get everyone where we are today!

Can you please change me to Rattlesnake Canyon for Saturday, and add my cousin Jerry with his F-150 to the same run? The Pontiac Sluice group will need to find a new tail gunner, but it looks like they have quite a few people signed up for that run so I'm hoping that's not a huge issue. My cousin needs to run a green trail and we want to stay together.

Randy had suggested meeting up at 10:00 am for this run, and said he was ok with Vons, but I'll let him give the final word. If everyone else is meeting at 9:00, I'm sure we can change this run up to 9:00 am too. He was just thinking that gave everyone enough time to have a nice breakfast in camp, and it makes even more sense now that we'll need a little time to get around the lake and into town from the campsite.

Thanks Danny for taking over. It is much easier with someone going to the final details.
I know everyone was looking forward to seeing the beast in action and no one more then me. But sometimes ya gotta be a little smarter and wait a little longer till I can get thing done right instead of rushing. I'm looking forward to seeing the pics from the run.

I will be driving up Friday evening with friends 2 jeeps are coming with me.  Not sure what time we will get there, but we are staying by the Baldwin lake side.

one will be doing black (TDS George), one will be doing all blue.

Danny can you please add Rawkon (Kevin) to the blues.

I never run Pontiac before, but I know Kevin did.  If we can't get anyone to lead that one I will ask.

Can we please assign radio channels to the color trail each day.  I will let the expert radio geeks do it.

We should have a general channel for global comm and specific trail comms.

Okey Dokey,  9AM @ Vons is a great plan for all the right reasons.

I will be leading the RSC loop on Sat.

"Can we please assign radio channels to the color trail each day.  I will let the expert radio geeks do it.

For the Green trail we wil use Simplex 146.535  CB 14  as not to compete with

Celt's Blue  Simplex 145.5200  CB12

As a general channel for global comm: 2M repeater: 147.330+  Tone:131.8  sounds great Celt.

So just throwing this out there. The blue trail groups are getting big. I am all for getting as much trail cover in as little time possible. Do we want to break the blue trail in two groups? And flip flop them on Saturday and Sunday.

I think I have two more coming, I haven't confirm their trail choice yet. But I would like to cap gold mtn at 15 trucks.

I couldn't agree more.
Would anyone be against splitting the blue groups up?

Sat - Group 1 GM
Sat - Group 2 PS

Sun - Group 1 PS
Sun - Group 2 GM

?

We will need a lead for
- PS on Sat
- PS on Sun
- GM on Sat

If we don't have leaders or tails for two separate groups my suggestion is to have a co leader in the middle stack the group with well equip vehicle in the front. That group won't stop for the tail.

For gold Mtn, we will all meet up at the rock garden for pictures and lunch. Then move on again. We will take off in same order then meet back up at the end of the trail.

Just throwing this out there...

Alex reached out to me about having stickers made for this years CANVAZ event.

I can have the two designs cleaned up/set up, but there will be graphic art charges for that.  Or, we can use the original CANVAZ logo sticker which is already in their system.  I had our sticker gal update the year already, here's a proof:

(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/CANVAZ%20II%20-%20California%20Edition/TylerCanvaz.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/CANVAZ%20II%20-%20California%20Edition/TylerCanvaz.jpg.html)

Cost is $1 per sticker...let me know the group thoughts on this.

My vote is to avoid the extra charges and roll with this design. It's more generic than the designs that were being thrown around earlier (no state logos, no event location info, etc), but the event is less than 2 weeks away and less is more at this point. If they can add "Big Bear, California" to the top without incurring the extra fees, that might be cool. Otherwise, generic stickers are better than no stickers. Besides, I think it looks pretty cool. :)

It discreetly has 2015 in the middle...so, not really "generic".  :)

Actually, the only years that offered stickers were 2011 & 2012.

True,
But managing 14 rigs with varying degrees of experience and modifications safely through a blue+ trail is complicated and should be left to the descretion of that trails leader.

Last night I was half in the bag...so the best I could do would be 1/2 a vote... which is 1/6 short of a 2/3 vote.

Let,s do the math together Steve; Let's say that you started out with a Six-Pac, then you drank 3 beers, which is 1/2 of 6.  Now in order to get to a 2/3 majority you MUST drink 1 more.  That's because 6 beers divided into 2/3 = 6/1 X 2/3 = 6x2/1x3 = 12/3 = 4beers.

I may not be able to count, but NOW you're 2 beers short of a Six-Pac ;D

The blue trails have been swapped.
For Randy to lead Pontiac Sluice, we have moved it to Sunday and Gold Mountain to Saturday. I hope this works for eveyone.

Guys, I know this is super late in the game but would like some help. My buddy just bought a stock Tacoma. He knows how to wheel and is a very experienced HAM and wrench turner. He's going to be there at CANVAZ with me, so I would like to get him on a trial with everyone. What's open for Sunday?

Just a heads up, was asked to repost for a member.  They are bringing a set of skids to CANVAZ and are motivated to sell.  Great deal on a set of skids for anyone interested http://www.azxterraclub.com/forum/index.php?topic=2151.msg19313

What year is the taco? What size tire does he have stock?
Looking at videos of PC that might be doable, but he might want to hitch a ride for Gold Mtn as he might struggle a little.

OP updated. Sunday Blue trail has been updated with requirements.
I am willing to lead a Sunday Green trail if anyone needs to drop off of Pontiac Sluice.
I'm thinking Clarks Grade would be nice.

I'm not exactly sure on the specs. In the end he bought it to build up a bit to be able to do overland trips if I understand him correctly. He's been with me on some good crawling projects so he will do just fine on any of the Blue runs I believe.

I'll break camp Sunday morning and will have to be down the hill by 2:00-ish to pick up my boy from the inlaws. Looks like all that's planned for Sunday is Pontiac Sluice and John Bull?

I want to run something, but won't have time for an all day thing so I may just end up taking a leisurely stroll down Holcomb Valley Road on my way out of town or something.

Monday isn't a holiday for most so there hasn't been much talk of another run. If there is any interest we can most certainly put something together.
This weekend, BigBear will also be hosting an October Fest event. A good time can be had but be ready for higher police presence and larger crowds.

As long as I'm not drinking and driving the police can drive with me lol  I don't mind staying another day 7.5+ hours of driving to get there  I can use one more day

Another FYI:

Oct. 10th is Opening Day for deer hunters :o  Don't wander too far off the trails, unless you got a LOT of orange clothing on.

Do not, under any circumstances, mount antlers to your hood or overhead compartment ;)

Octoberfest and high powered rifles; what could go wrong ???

Nice! I'll purchase a couple when I get up there on Saturday morning. Be sure to bring them to the Vons parking lot for those who won't be in camp. Who's going to be the official sticker-seller since GeoYota won't be in attendance? Alex?

Stickers are in hand and ready to go, thanks to John for getting these made :) I'll also be with the group at Vons Saturday morning: can I catch a ride with someone for the trail ride Saturday? ;D
I'll give any leftover stickers to Toro for the people on Sunday and onwards.

Looks great.
This has been a tough week at work, just thinking about this weekend. I'm glad it's finally here. I will be rolling out of my place around 10am and am looking at a short 2 hour drive. See most of you tonight.
I too have an empty seat in the rig.
