Excellent photos Scott! You get so much more color than I do with my "desert camera." I love how blue the sky is in all of your shots compared to my hazy sky.
-
The polarizer helps a lot ..... The credit goes to you on the winch photo (since it was your idea) ... Turned out nice. I still have a few to go through. Can't wait to see yours.

I'm definitely looking forward to getting out there and being able to get on some of these trails with you all.

Took a few videos while we were out there! I hope you all enjoy!
The guys taking a turn in the soft sand after Joe...ummm...took a detour with the group!

A decent stretch of Rocky Terrain

Although the video doesn't give it any justice, this was a 4wd mandatory side trail that led to an awesome abandoned mine...dinged the skid plate on the way up!

Like a boss indeed! Your truck handled that road up to the Oso Fino like it was nothing! I was dragging my belly across all kinds of boulders and in and out of those ruts. Like you said, the video doesn't even do it justice - that was by far the most gnarly road I've made it up in my X.

Finally got all of my photos ready to post. Here's the basic trip report:
Began the day in Baker, taking Kelbaker Road east into the preserve. We got off of the pavement near Seventeen Mile Point onto the Mojave Road and aired down. From here, we took the Mojave Road to Brannigan Mine Road, and headed toward a few old mine sites:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/06.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/06.jpg.html)
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/79.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/79.jpg.html)
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/01.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/01.jpg.html)
The very first site turned out to be a bust. We couldn't find the "Paymaster Mine," despite Motorpig77's son's valliant effort climbing around the hills to look for us:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/02.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/02.jpg.html)
We headed a little further down the road and found the actual Brannigan site. All that remains is a stone chimney where a cabin once stood:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/04.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/04.jpg.html)
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/03.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/03.jpg.html)
From there, we headed further back into the hills until we located part of the old settlement near Seventeenmile Point. These cabins are in spectacular shape, and have been "adopted" by a desert off road club that keeps them in living-condition. They were stocked with supplies, tools, propane, etc. Would have made for a very comfortable stay! Obviously, we were very respectful to the hard work that the club puts into keeping these cabins in good condition, and I have nothing but respect for their efforts. I hope like hell that no one ever vandalizes this site.

Wandering around the site yielded some great photo opportunities:

Lots of cool things to check out. Basically, everywhere you'd step there was some kind of evidence of the activites of the past at this location.
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/82.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/82.jpg.html)
Just watch out for the hidden cacti that blend in with the brush!

We wandered up the road and checked out the mines:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/90.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/90.jpg.html)
This particular mine was blocked off about 20 feet inside, but you could see through the gate and it looked pretty impressive:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/94.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/94.jpg.html)
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/85.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/85.jpg.html)
There was even an area where the original miners lived underground:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/93.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/93.jpg.html)
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/95.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/95.jpg.html)
The next mine we checked out had a vertical shaft and a horizontal adit. Both were sealed off, but I was able to get a good shot down inside the vertical shaft:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/96.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/96.jpg.html)
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/97.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/97.jpg.html)
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/89.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/89.jpg.html)
From there, we took the vehicles further up the mountain to check out the Oso Fino Mine. As Motorpig77 mentioned, this was a REALLY crazy road, and not all of the vehicles in our group made it. It was by far the craziest road I've taken my Xterra up, and I'm very surprised I didn't break something along the way. Once at the top, we were rewarded with one of the oldest mine sites in the entire Mojave Preserve. This mine first began production in 1890 and had a few additions over the years. It produced a good amount of gold until the 1940s.

The main shaft was REALLY deep and was sealed off. I managed to snap a cool photo through the grate:

Since I couldn't go down, I went up!

There was a nearby second entrance to the mine that was not sealed off, but was in no condition to enter:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/108.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/108.jpg.html)
From there, it was back down the road and on to our next stop:

We headed back out the way we came and hit the pavement again. From there, we took Kelbaker road further southeast until we hit Aiken Mine Road, which took us to the Lava Tube:

From there, we continued along Aiken Mine Road to the old Aiken Cinder Mine:

This site was AMAZING! It began it's life as a massive corporate mining operation in 1948 and operated all the way until 1990, when the operators of the mine defaulted on their lease of the property. They abruptly shut down operations and completely walked away, leaving everything in place and intact. There are still over 500,000 tons of mined material at the site that was never sold off, and all kinds of heavy mining equipment that we explored:

By this time, we had used up most of our daylight and were still over an hour away from the location we originally planned to camp. Fortunately, Motorpig77 spotted a fire ring near the mine that turned out to be a very suitable camp spot. We weren't really sheltered from the elements, but it was a beautiful evening/night with only brief periods of minor wind, so we were golden!
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/30.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/30.jpg.html)
I quietly explored the area around the camp and bumped into a massive jack rabbit. With his ears up, he stood about 2 and a half feet tall! He was dark gray with black tips on his ears and a long black tail. He actually looked kind of like a burro!

The sunset from the campsite was amazing, as always:

And the night scenery wasn't half bad, either. The orange glow is the lights of Las Vegas, about 150 miles to our north:

Unfortunately, once the sun went down, the wildlife had nothing to do but check us out. Now I've heard horror stories of Camel Spiders from some of my buddies who are in the Marine Corps, but I never knew they lived in the Mojave Desert too. These suckers were UGLY! We had two that kept running around the camp fire, tormenting us and scaring all of the ladies. Motorpig77 was able to pull them up on his cell phone where we learned that they can run 10 miles per hour and jump 4 feet in the air. They are not deathly poisonous and are supposedly kind of friendly unless provoked. This particular guy used his front "arms" to scare the crap out of all of us, putting them up in the air and acting like he wanted to fight us. Since he's so "friendly" it's possible that he just wanted a hug:

The morning brought us a very beautiful sunrise over camp:

Before cooking breakfast, I explored the area around the camp once more and shot a few photos with the morning light. There were some cool ruins of a stone building nearby. It once had a massive roof structure, so it's possible it was some sort of barn or workshop:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/41.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/41.jpg.html)

Once everyone else woke up, it was breakfast time:

Scott307 took a few moments to explore the area as we all broke camp:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/44.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/44.jpg.html)
We departed the camping location and continued north on Aiken Mine Road. We stopped briefly at an old cattle corral and checked out the site. The old windmill was impressive:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/46.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/46.jpg.html)

If you were a cow and you ended up in this thing, you were more than likely a very delicious cow:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/124.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/124.jpg.html)
We continued down the road and entered the Joshua Tree Forest area. This area is the most dense collection of Joshua Trees on the planet. We stopped to check out the old Mojave Phone Booth site. Nothing remains at this site except for a couple of metal bars on the ground that we believe held the phone booth at one point. For those of you unfamiliar with the Mojave Phone Booth, do a quick google search. It's an interesting story.

While continuing on down the road, we spotted a Golden Eagle atop a huge Joshua Tree. Myself and Scott took the opportunity to shoot some photos of him before we scared him off. It's pretty amazing that they can turn their heads all they way backwards while perched:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/27.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/27.jpg.html)
In flight, he was a BEAUTIFUL creature with a big wingspan of probably 4 feet or so:

After traveling a little further down the road, a really cool looking lizard ran out in front of my Xterra and sprinted ahead of us. I was going 30 mph according to my speedo and he was running faster than me, pulling away from us. He was up on the tips of his super long toes and looked like he was floating about 3 or 4 inches above the sand as he ran super fast. He finally ran off to the side of the road and let me snap this photo of him as we passed:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/125.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/125.jpg.html)
Eventually, Aiken Mine Road ends into a junction with several other roads. Right at this junction is a working private ranch known as the Valley View Ranch. It looked a lot like many of the ruins in the area, but is a fully functional site with a family that lives there. This ranch has been in operation since the homestead era, and continues to be allowed to operate inside of the bounaries of the preserve. Note that there are several other ranches like this throughout the preserve, but only one other one in this region west of the Ivanpah Mountains:

We hit the pavement at Cima Road and traveled east to the Cima Store. The store was closed (it appears to be permenantly out of business at this point), so we headed on to the Death Valley Mine and Dawson's Camp. While traveling down the road to the site, our passage was blocked by one of the locals:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/49.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/49.jpg.html)

This tortoise was much larger than the two of them that we saw on the Mojave Road trip a month earlier. Also, he wasn't even the least bit afraid of us. We did a good job of not spooking him, but we were fascinated and naturally wanted to take photos. Eventually, we dug a small hole off of the road and filled it with water. He quickly moved over to the water and stuck his head in but didn't really drink much. He crawled through the water hole and got his belly wet before wandering off into the wilderness somewhere.

We arrived at the Death Valley Mine a short time later and began to explore:

The main house at the site was in great shape! There were even grapevines growing up the side of the building:

This house was built in the 1940s and is surprisingly well intact after being exposed to the elements for so long:

From there, we wandered further back within the site toward the secondary structures and the actual mine:

There was a very impressive conveyer system that came out of a secondary entrance to the mine:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/69.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/69.jpg.html)
The main mineshaft was not sealed off and was a very deep vertical shaft. A quick look down revealed quite a bit of water at the bottom from the rain that the region received a few days earlier:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/74.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/74.jpg.html)
The equipment around the mineshaft was really awesome. This huge winch was used to hoist things into and out of the mine using the metal headframe over the shaft. It was constructed of crude materials, but was impressively engineered and built. The engine unit was actually the front end of an old farm tractor, and the whole assembly was mounted to and old truck chassis. The huge gears drove spools of wire that ran through a home-made fairlead, which consisted of a few round metal bars configured together. There were big impressions along the fairlead from the steel cable:

By the time we finished exploring this site, it was time for lunch at our vehicles before hitting the road for home. We took the dirt road back out to the pavement and aired back up at the Cima Store. I managed to snap a cool photo of one of the old boxcars sitting on the ground at Cima, which had obviously been converted to some kind of living quarters at some point:
(http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee234/jfanaselle/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/78.jpg) (http://s231.photobucket.com/user/jfanaselle/media/Mojave%20Preserve%2005-17-15/78.jpg.html)
Once aried up, we took Kelso Cima road into Kelso and passed by the depot. From there, we took Kelbaker Road all the way into Amboy, where we stopped to shoot photos of some trains and to grab a Route 66 Root Beer from Roy's Diner. From there, it was an easy but long drive home through Twentynine Palms.

Like a boss indeed! Your truck handled that road up to the Oso Fino like it was nothing! I was dragging my belly across all kinds of boulders and in and out of those ruts. Like you said, the video doesn't even do it justice - that was by far the most gnarly road I've made it up in my X.
She forgets the Audio records when I turn on the Gopro! :) That was a fun road! We need to go find a few more like that out there!
Great Photos and awesome narration of our trip! I am very impressed! You need to lead some more of these buddy!
-
Thanks Clint. I had an absolute blast, and couldn't be happier with how the trip came out. Normally, I go out there and find stuff, then come home and research it. This time was a little backward, as I did a bunch of research before we left just to make sure it would be a great trip for everyone.
I plan to do MUCH more exploring throughout the preserve once the weather gets cool again, and will post up my plans everytime and invite people to come along. I told Jessica that I will have travelled all 7,000 miles of dirt road within that preserve before I die! :)

Great photos Alex! I love the one of the rule book at the cabin, and I REALLY love the snow ones from your trip in January. That first one with the moon is pretty awesome.
I also think it's funny that every single one of us seems to have taken the same photo from our first stop, looking out toward the trucks with the expanse of the desert and Soda Dry Lake in the background. :)

Great photos Joe, thanks for taking the lead on this run. Looks like we missed a cool one!
Nice pictures as well Alex, especially the snow shots.

Awesome pics Joe ... They really tell the story ... Even the painful ones lol. It was great having the history along with the ride ... Made it much more fun.
Motorpig ... I like the videos .... Next time, maybe I'll actually remember to turn mine on when we are climbing an epic trail lol (sorry Joe!)
And both of you, quit making fun of me because I can't talk on the radio ... KK6UGK out!
Seriously though, it's the people that make the trip and you all were great ... Thanks again!
-
I'm jealous Alex .... I love the snow pics ... I didn't get to see much of the cold white stuff this year :'(
-
Thanks Scott. There will be many more cool trips to come. Maybe we'll get lucky and get some of Alex's snow on Celt's trip in January. :)
And congrats on getting the Ham call finally! Welcome to the cool club! 8)

I think I got really lucky with the snow; was in the right place at the right time. I saw it was snowing in Cima, so decided to explore the trails around there. I took it nice and easy, based on the snow I was definitely the only one out there. I took the trail out until the wooden structure in the first snow photo, but the trail kept on going from there. It looks like it goes by Pinto Mountain, Thomas Place, and more out after where I stopped. I think I stopped at 35.202502, -115.465532 , not 100% on it though.
