Tentative "in" based on the following..

How built/modded does a truck need to be to do the planned route?

Sliders, skids IMHO
Grooters did it in a Frontier
mostly need good suspension for the washboard roads.

Please post IN on the new x.org

In as well. Myself + 1 (either the wife or my brother, depending on work schedules). I'm running a PML with spacer in front and shackle/AAL combo in the back, plus bill 5100s all the way around. Let me know if you think this will be good enough for the washboard roads.

Sounds like an amazing trip, thanks for organizing!

JF, just airing down will soften the ride on washboards and you will ride nice and smooth over it all. Your rig will do just fine for a trip like this one with zero to no worries.

I bet they were out secretly burying their poo in the fields behind the rooms and used that as an excuse as to why the reservations took so long.

It is the entry level (Technician) license (ticket) for Amateur Radio (aka Ham).  Minimal studying, fairly easy test.  Then you can legally talk to the world.  Check out the previously posted links for study guides, practice exams, and where to take the test.

Hope you are able to get Technician before trip, if not still bring a ham radio(for monitoring).
I went to http://hamexam.org/ and chose the FlashCard link for technician.
There are links for a 35 question sample test and for the question pool itself.
I think the flash cards worked for me. YMMV. :)

Painroller, if you are not able to obtain your Tech license by this trip, another option would be to purchase a small handheld unit like a Baofeng or something similar so you could at least monitor the HAM traffic. This unit is very inexpensive and works great at close range

http://www.amazon.com/Baofeng-136-174-400-480-Dual-Band-Transceiver/dp/B009MAKWC0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1442388745&sr=8-1&keywords=baofeng+ham

Just a suggestion if youre unable to get your Tech license!

I replaced the Rubber Duck on my Yaesu FT-60R .
with this.
Diamond SRH77CA supposed to be good for 2m and 70cm
overall length is 16 inches versus 7 for OEM rubber duck.

I did the exact same thing to my FT-60R shortly after buying it about 8 years ago, then quickly changed it back after stabbing myself in the arm pit about 20 times while having the radio clipped onto my belt.  :D

That SRH77 works great but it's like three times longer than the entire radio! Truth be told, I've never had an issue with the included antenna on my FT-60R. I keep the SRH77 in my rig in case I ever need a little extra range on my handheld, but I've never used it since I took it off.

There are some inexpensive home made cases people have made.
i will try to make this one.

I have experience with PVC tubing having made my boys blowguns that shoot nails with laser sights.

Gas.

coming from the South or North up/down Highway 395 gas up in Olancha CA
From Olancha it is 25 miles to the Saline Valley turn off to the North and 45 miles to Panamint Springs resort

There is an alternate route at 395( searles station) up highway 178 but I am unfamiliar with route or gas stations along the way.
Also if the next station is Panamint springs then you would be forced to fill at a much higher rate.

seems as though most of highway 178 is playa driving(really hot) barren.

How much extra fuel do you believe is required to bring for the run? I have 2 2-gallon rotopax cans but 4 gallons doesn't seem like much extra fuel for a trip like this. What is everyone else planning to bring?

we all brought 5 gallons jerrycans last year and we got out ok,
that being said, I wished I had brought at least 10 gallons. We also may wish to explore on day 3 or 4 and that would require fuel.
This year I am bringing my trailer and will take the hit  in mpg's and will bring 15 gallons.
"GeoYota" is bringing 10 gallons ( I believe).

We should also plan for a contingency exit should the roads not be passable on our proposed route.

the Big Pine Road from Crankshaft junction to the South Eureka road(mountain pass) seems to be washed out/closed at this time.

Our loop as of today is to go counter clockwise.
South entrance, lippencott, homestake, ubehebe, crankshaft, eureka dunes, steelpass, saline hot springs, Northern exit.

 we could do:

Southern entrance, Saline valley hot springs(first night),

Steel Pass, Eureka dunes(second night),

RETURN, Steel Pass, Saline valley hot springs (third night)

Lippencott/Homestake camp(fourth night)

Drive out Race track/Tea Kettle Junction/Uebehe crater(then pavement to Stove Pipe wells(gas and done)

There are plenty of alternatives and plenty of time 43 days.....

PS I would like to get in touch with Mark and Nia,

if anyone knows how to do this please let them know ...

10 gallons sounds like a good number for comfort and reduced stress while out in death valley.

5 gallons will get you by,......... but the extra would allow a day for exploration.

There are mines, and other sites that would be interesting to check out and not have to say "maybe next time".

I can't freaking wait. This trip is going to be so epic. My bro and I will be leaving early on Friday, probably as soon as the morning commuter traffic dies down (8:00 or 9:00 am). We're going to stop at the old abandoned Boron State Prison to explore a little on the way out. If anyone else coming from SoCal wants to caravan up there and wants to join us for the exploration, let me know.

If we leave the Inland Empire area around 9:00 am and explore the prison area for ~2 hours, we'd be getting into Panamint Springs resort around 3:00 pm.

You might be a little lonely arriving that early .

might wanna go hike over to Darwin Falls.

Last year most started arriving around dusk.

or you could just start drinking..... :)

Just gives us more time to explore the 395 on our way up, and explore around the area of the resort before everyone else shows up. :)

That hike to Darwin Falls sounds pretty fun. We'll probably give that a whirl if no one else is there yet.

I haven't, but it sure looks like a cool place. Maybe we'll pop in there. Another option would be to stop by the Trona Pinnacles, which I've also never seen. Hell, maybe we'll do both. :)

But we are still waiting on the Big Pine Rd to open from Crankshaft junction to the Crater Mine (Sulphur).
This allows travel from Ubehebe Crater up to crankshaft junction and over to Eureka Dunes(night 2 campspot).

No problem for a stock Tundra 4by and FJC.  We had never driven Lippincott before and found it to be much easier than  feared.
That road has haunted me for decades and after coming over Hunter Mountain for the first time (stops at Hunter Cabin, J.O. Mine, and Lost Burro) we stayed in Homestake Dry Camp Tuesday night.

The descent went smoothly with plenty of road in the nasty bits and no need for any spotting.
We continued on to the Springs on great South Pass road and stayed the night.

Wind shredded my 16' Noah's tarp  yesterday morning so we opted to forgo further sand eating and headed back to the coast.

Lee came into my camp on Monday to see what route I came in and its condition.
He said up to Saturday the north was open with one spot with a lot of rocks on the road but passable in four wheel drive.
Since the rains, he didn't know the condition of the road.  About noon on Monday a Motorcycle rider came into the springs.
He said he came in the north route and it is open with one spot that has a lot of rocks on the road but passable.
Tuesday a Jeep Wrangler came in from the north route and said it was open, with some rocks in one spot but passable.
So, it seems its open but advisable to have four wheel drive."

Went in South Pass Thursday night (10/8/15), and back out Yesterday morning (10/11/15).
Most of the road was in really good shape with the least washboard I've seen.  There are a lot of little places where the water washed over the road in the valley, but no big deal, but do need to slow down for some of them.  The worst I thought was the last section on Bat Road right before the lower Springs.  Gets rutted and rocky.  Same going to the upper Springs.  Some big rocks and such, and the road is a bit hard to follow in a couple places.  Numerous vehicles missing the road coming down from Steel Pass just above upper springs and heading down the wash.

Did not drive it, but folks were filtering in and out North Pass with jeeps and 4x4 without any major difficulties, that we heard about.

Is it too early to start talking about food and firewood for this trip? I'm just starting to make my checklist for what to bring along.

If we're doing group meals, I'll bring my big 3 burner camp chef stove and huge griddle, which really comes in handy around breakfast time (I bet GeoYota could pump out quite a few of those amazing peanut butter pancakes of his on this bad boy... :)). If it's an "everyone for themselves" type trip, I'll just bring my small stove/grill combo.

How much firewood do you want everyone to bring each? Several nights with raging campfires well into the evening should certainly require more than the standard "one bundle per person," yeah?

imo its better if we plan dinners as group meals as it is less for everyone to carry, i think breakfast and lunch will mostly be on your own type stuff with maybe a group breakfast or 2 planned out.

I agree. I'm looking at the schedule and every Eve we will have plenty of time to set up and get some solid cooking going.  Breakfasts and lunches can kinda be eat what you brought but if someone makes pancakes and tells me to stuff them into my mouth I will stuff it into my mouth!! As for dinners maybe we can get 2 people per night to kinda volunteer to cook main courses? Thoughts?

Okay...

I am "kinda volunteering" to make one pasta dinner, and one pancake breakfast (if Joe brings his 3-burner bad boy) for the group on this trip.

I am "kinda volunteering" Clint/Motorpig77 to help me coordinate Spaghetti Night, and Jordan/Knightrider with the Peanut Butter Pancake Breakfast.

My thought is along the lines of what Danny suggested, the breakfast and lunches are individually planned (except the PBPB) and dinners could be a collaborative (two volunteers per night, no doubling up so responsibility is shared) potlucks.

We may want to cross post something over on TNX so the NorCal attendees not registered here can contribute (Chris, can you coordinate this?) to some evening meals?

Since it seems we will be hitting the trail each day by 10am, my thought is to coordinate the PBPB on the last day, as a nice send off for the group?

Thoughts?

I know if we start a little early this will give ample time for the griddle/stove to cool for packing for the final jaunt home, sending the group home with full stomachs and smiles on their faces.

I'd like to cook the Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday night, and set the bar high for others to follow... ;) ;D ;) ;D

(Thanks Joe for the photo steals from TMR 2015 trip...)

I like the way you're thinking John. I'm not that great at cooking entire meals, so I'd like to volunteer to help the following way:

1) I'll bring the big boy 3-burner stove and 38" griddle, as well as a full 10 pound propane tank. We can use it for the PB Pancake breakfast, and any meals we need it for along the trip.
2) I'll bring my bbq attachment for the 3 burner stove and I will grill a whole bunch of italian sausage for the spaghetti dinner on Saturday night (the same sausage seen in the photos - last time I only grilled a few on my tiny setup. This time, I'll cook enough for the whole group on the big boy).
3) I can bring more "bacon of the gods" for the PB breakfast morning on the last day. I'm just concerned about having room to cook it if the griddle is being used for pancakes (it's a HUGE griddle, but it's not divided or anything so that makes it tough to do half and half with the bacon grease).

Is that enough contribution for the group? If not, I can also volunteer to bring/grill something one other night using the grill attachment (Carne asada? Hamburgers?).

On another note:

while we anticipate having a pit toilet at each night camping spot, there is a possibility that plans get altered or locations get altered and we find ourselves out in the open with no facilities.

Also one pit toilet makes for a long line in the morning.

I will be bringing my PETT toilet. And I strongly encourage all to bring something because we will need to pack all our "stuff out"

There is no "Dig a hole in the desert".

The grand dunny tent lends itself to solitude as you read the latest gun and 4x4 magazines in the morning.

Both available on amazon.

This is a more economical solution so there is no reason to show up with out some means of putting it in a bag:)

Kit can be purchased in quantities that you may need
And put them in your tire mounted Trasharoo.

I do bring additional Toilet paper since that is a ridiculously small amount of TP

YMMV

Just a formal response to our text conversation, CHUSA:

The grill surface for my BBQ attachment is 16" x 24". Should be able to get a good amount of fish on there. If we can get half on the grill and the other half in pans on your burners on your trailer, we should be able to get it all cooked up pretty quick. That will also give us two different types of cooked fish, to give everyone a nice variety. :) I'll bring some cedar planks for the stuff going on the grill.

I'm happy to help on Tuesday night, let me know what else is needed for the cooking/food to bring. For the rest of the meals, my wife and I are both a pain as far as diets go, so most of the time we'll probably end up cooking for ourselves.

BTW, every time I've been out in the desert, I've always dug holes, especially when backpacking for 3 weeks. I know it takes longer to decompose, etc, but what's the major concern?
Posted via Mobile Device

Regarding Tueday night dinner. We need a chef and 2 assistants. Mexican theme so throw some suggestions out there regarding Mexican cuisine.
SIde dishes should include veggies, bread(if applicable), fruit, etc... pick some thing and post up or send a PM to the chef that night.

Regarding Poop:

it does not decompose
it turns to mummy poop then gets blown by the wind. or if buried ... gets carried off by the next flash flood, dried and blown by the wind.

bring a porta potty of some type,
again we plan on camping next to a pit toilet on all nights but you never know what or where you will find yourself in.

Us So-Cal guys have had great luck doing Carne Asada for Mexican themed dinner nights. It's easy to bring along pre-marinated, and is quick/easy to cook. Pair it up with some corn and flour tortillas, shredded cheese, sour cream, guacamole and freshly sliced tomatoes/lettuce/whatever other veggies you want. Someone else can heat up some beans/and or rice for a side, and it's a great meal that will feed a lot of people. Probably one of the easiest meals to make out there on the trail really. :)

James Barnett....... Just got back from 4 days on Death Valley back roads. Hunter Mtn. to Teakettle Jct. and down Lippincott to Warm Springs were in good shape. 4 jeepers did this starting on Tuesday from Saline Valley road south. Ended up going out South Pass yesterday to Lee'sFlat. Today we went up the backside to Cerro Gordo and over to the Salt Tram down to Swansea. Thanks for all the work everyone does to maintain these roads, NPS and Inyo County.

Here's an article that summarizes the rainfall events and damage that Death Valley National Park received during October. http://www.pe.com/articles/castle-784650-park-wines.html?page=1

They're calling it a 1000 year flood event, with almost 3 inches of rain dumped over one area in just about 5 hours. Fortunately for us and for this trip, most of the rain and damage occurred in the Scotty's Castle and Furnace Creek areas, which are southeast of our intended route. We could end up seeing some pretty badly damaged routes along the eastern-most reaches of our trip, especially near Ubehebe Crater, but most of our route seems to have been spared from the hardest hitting rain.

Also fortunately for us, the heavy rain events that hit the Mojave (the community of Mojave) and Tehachapi Pass areas about 12 days ago (the ones that stranded hundreds of cars along Hwy 58 in heavy mud flows) also stayed a good distance away from Panamint Valley and the northern reaches of DV National Park.

All in all, seems like things could have been much worse in terms of this trip.

If I remember right....

we used 2 store bought faggots per night.

And we will have a fire each night. Sat,Sun,Mon,Tues

If each rig brings one bundle that would be great. 16 bundles(someone will forget)
If we figure 3 each night then we have a great fire with 4 bundles left over.
if you dont want to carry it home it can be donated at the Saline Valley Hot Springs.

Or to GeoXplorer who will stay in the valley and extra 2 nights or so.

I have no trip reports to date(from Death valley NPS,Facebook, salineValley website or others) indicating that the road from Tea Kettle Junction through Ubehebe Crater and North on Big Pine RD to Crankshaft junction and over to S. Erureka Dunes road is open or more importantly PASSABLE.

I have yellow highlighted last years loop and used RED pen within to indicate currently NonPassable roads on our proposed route.

Stay tuned.......

Nice trip report from DennisMC in the park from 17-24 october

I was in Death Valley from the 17th through the 24th. Came over Steele to the springs. The steps are a little more challenging as most of the rock fill is gone but at most it only took me 5 minutes to get through. The rest of the road over Steele is in good shape until you get to the upper springs and then the road gets very hard to follow, tracks going in all directions and many false paths. Took several hours of following a track down a wash only to find a gulley or wash out. Met up with 2 other vehicles at Marble bath and after a while we would spread out and find a path and got to the middle springs, took several hours and I have gone into the springs this way probably 10 times so I know the way.

Not technically difficult just time consuming finding a through though this will change as vehicles go in and out and reestablish a path. Got a lot of wind and some rain over the weekend and had a spectacular lightning show Sunday night which turned out to be the storm that devastated Scotty's castle. Left

Monday for the racetrack, valley floor in very nice shape with a couple of washouts to keep you alert and went up Lippencott. No real issues other than 1 spot in the rocky middle section where a lot of dirt and rocks have built up to create an off camber area. Caught up with a quartet of Toyota's that had been at the springs and talked for a spell at the racetrack which was under a fair amount of water at the south end, enough to cover all the tracks and all but the largest rocks. The water disappeared about halfway to the grandstand.

Followed the Toyota's out, they went straight at Teakettle and I turned up to go out over Hunter mountain. Going across Hidden valley the silt pit has turned into a mud bog which was interesting, as at a guess it was 2 plus feet deep and about 150 feet long. I drive a 2001 Xterra with 2" body, 3" suspension lift, full Shrockworks skids, sliders, ft and rear bumpers, front Aussie locker, 33/10.5/15 BFG mud terrains, etc, Wallowed around quit a bit but got through ok if not a bit muddier. Going up and over Hunter there were no tracks since the last rain storm so I wasn't sure what to expect.

What I got was a lot of rocks and brush on the road with a few corner washouts but nothing too washed out that I couldn't get by. Once at the top came across numerous mud bogs that seemed to get a little bigger and deeper as I went. Made it through and out without any major mishaps and got to the hiway where I aired up and took some pictures of my quit muddy truck. Spent the night at Panamint springs and after talking to Noah the next morning found out Goler was not going to be done this trip as the previous day a motorcyclist had come through and shown him pictures of gullys 6ft deep and 6 ft across and a lot of rockfall in the canyon.

Went up to Minnietta cabin for the night and did some exploring in the area. Next day went up Pleasant canyon and Middle park and then up to Telescope and stayed at Mahogony flat campground, beautiful but cold at night. Left the next morning and explored one side road just down from the Kilns then went up to Augerberry pt for some pictures of Badwater under water then into Furnace creek. Next morning up to Dantes for a view of Badwater from the other side then into Greenwater/Furnace creek wash area which I had wanted to explore for a while but had always just passed through. Fun to explore and the roads were in great shape.

Spent all afternoon following roads all over to what was out there, which isn't much anymore then continued south to Deadman's pass, east into the Amargosa Valley. Hadn't thought about it as I was just kinda winging it as to where I went and got lucky as I hit pavement because I was just up the road from the Amargosa river and luckily the road was on the high side, could not have crossed after all the rain.

Went down to Shosone for a quick lunch and fill up of the gas tanks then headed north, stopped at Death Valley junction and thought about staying at the hotel but decided to head back into Death Valley. Have been wanting to go out over Echo Pass for a while, having come into the valley coming down Echo I always wanted to try up so I drove up to see what the condition of the road was like, all the morning reports had the Greenvalley/Furnace creek road closed as well as Echo canyon, and both road were in great shape, Echo was nicer than warm springs road into Butte valley, so I continued up to the dry falls to take a look. A little intimidating but did a little rock stacking and 20 minutes later I was heading to Beatty for the night.

Stayed at the Atomic Inn which is a nice inexpensive little hotel and after checking in headed out to eat. Imagine my surprise when I step out and who's parked just across the street, James and Monika in the TurtleV. I had never met them before but had seen them at Expo and read about their travels. They invited me in and we talked for quit a while but I still had to get some dinner so off for pizza and beer.

If you've not had the chance to spend any time in Beatty it's an interesting little town , lot of characters in the bar that night. Next morning went back into the valley through Titus canyon which is always a nice drive, road was a little rough in places but nothing too serious. At this point it was time to start heading out of the valley. Stopped at Panamint springs for a burger and beer then headed over to Darwin falls and up the hill to China Garden springs, haven't been there in a few years and was surprised by how much growth both in and around the spring, not a lot of room for the koi and gold fish, very overgrown.

Went out through Darwin which is always an interesting town to drive through, people live there but are rarely seen and the feeling is that many eyes are always following you. After hitting pavement did one last detour before heading towards hiway395 and stopped at the site of U2's Joshua tree which has been fallen down for many years but there's a chest with a lot of memorabilia and pictures and things that fans have left over the years.
At this point it was time to head into Lone Pine for a room and dinner and back home the next day. Had another very full but rewarding trip to Death Valley, missed spending time in Butte Valley because of road conditions and all but this forced me into seeing parts of the park that I either had never seen or hadn't seen in a long time

Speaking from a completely selfish point of view because I want to taste both dishes, I'll step way out of line and out of my pay grade here and "let you know" to make both dishes!!! ;-)

I'll make both  ;)  I'm not a great cook, so lower your expectations.  All I'll promise is that you will stay warm from the beans that night.  ;D

I will prepare a dutch-oven cheese enchilada casserole side dish for Tuesday night.

Some focus on wood, some focus on roads, I focus on food - mostly 'cuz I'm always hangry -

From what I can tell :

Fishy Night has fish and couscous.  Is anybody bringing something to pair with this?  If not, I'll also bring a white bean salad.  (Yes, I'm willing to bring two dishes - 1. To make sure there is plenty of food and 2. 'Cuz I don't like fish)

Spagetti Night is fully nailed down

Korean BBQ Night - Looks like we have 3 chefs - so is this covered?

Mexi Night has bean/corn salad, chips, and cheese enchilada casserole. Is anybody bringing something else?

As this trip approaches I would like to remind everyone that the Scandinavian pumpkin scrape is in full effect. As the official trail leader I can guarantee happiness and general smiles through the trip. However, I also plan on making sport of chrishaynesusa. Any and all personnel using to much seriousness and responsibility will be forthwith giving more responsibilities and asked questions for which I am not privy to. Last but not least I expect each and every one of you to use the age old motto of the deserts of California. " when the going gets dirty, plan according to Slippery clam steaks"

See you all Friday!!

Your fearless leader (and kinda a big deal)

Just a pro tip I figure out.

If you have an Amazon Prime account, you automatically have Prime Music.
You can download all sorts of music for offline playback!

This is helpful because we will have ZERO cell phone coverage.

And podcast of course.  Don't forget those.

Everyone in the world may already know this, but I didn't and I though I'd share.  See you guys tomorrow.

I broke the A frame welds to the trailer.
On wash boards going from Homestake camp to teakettle junction.  we flag down 3 jeeps they came by and we ask if they had a welder on board and they did.
Rewelded A frame to trailer.
Reinforced with two highlift bars. And strapped to the trailer.
I limped out race track road to ubehebe crater and pavement with CKAYAKS.
He followed me to stove pipe well and to panamint springs.
Then on to lone pine. We got motel. I will nurse it home tomorrow
CKAYAKS will go back in to saline valley through the north pass an meet the other 12 rigs.

As Steve C said, the trip was AWESOME! About half of the group peeled off a day early and came home out the north pass (including me), while the other half went back up through steel pass and back to the hot springs for another night, so we won't be hearing from them until probably Wednesday evening. The road conditions changed the route a little and we didn't get to run any of the northeasterly routes, but it sure was amazing none the less. I took literally hundreds of photos and will be going through them at some point today and will try to get some of them posted up by this evening. I didn't get home until pretty late last night and haven't started unpacking gear or cleaning anything up.

CHUSA - Glad to see you made it back today. It is unbelievable what a bunch of genius minds can come up with out there in the middle of nowhere when repairs need to be made. I'm proud to say that's my black hi-lift beam on your trailer  ;D Thanks for putting this trip together and I'm very sorry you couldn't finish it out, but glad to hear you made it back safely.

Ace, will be there tomorrow night!! :)

So I have Joe's Highlift bar and who's is the other one?
So I can replace it or send the bar back down?

I am needing some pictures desperately......

Joe and Roy and I  and our back up safety "CKayaks" limped back to Ubehebe crater Sunday evening.
That 20 miles was kinda stressful. the last 5 miles had really washed out roads and it bounced us a little.
We came upon a Nissan Sedan with two foreign tourist with a baby in the back child restraint seat.
we stopped and they asked if this road lead to the racetrack.
I told them to turn around and that they were not prepared for the road(don't know why the first 5 miles did not dissuade them).
It was night at this point and they had no food or water or recovery equipment and the temperature would soon be freezing.
they chose to ignore my warning.

We got to Ubehebe crater and Roy peed in it a second time( he was very proud of that).

We aired back up to 40 psi and hit dry pavement for the rest of the trip home. I was able to do 40-45 back to stovepipe wells where we gassed up and went back through Panamint Springs and back to Lone pine where we stayed the night.

Super big thank you to CKayaks who drove slowly with me all the way back and stayed in radio contact with me the whole way.
Ham radios are MONEY!!!!.

Monday morning we got up and had breakfast at the motel and I rewired the trailer cable back together.
SO now I had brakes and lights!! we drove out of Lone pine and back to Paso Robles Monday night and then Tuesday we made it home.
I was able to talk to CKayaks(Cass) Tuesday and learned that some of you went home day early and that all souls were safe and had fun.

The bright light streaking in the sky Saturday night was a trident II missile test from a Navy submarine off the coast of Los Angeles. you can google for the story line.
It was an AWESOME sight from the desert.

I cant thank everyone enough for all the help in getting my trailer ready for the trip back home.
I will  have to bring a good bottle of scotch for next years trip  or perhaps make it down for one of the SCCX runs.

Best regards to ALL

ChUSA glad you made it back out. I took was saved my one of those trail stick welder when my shtick bumper decided to come off the frame.

Surprise to see the A break when you have that fancy Offroad ready hitch setup.

What's the plan for improvement? Giant steel plate to gusset the top?

Just a WAG but looking at those pics of the break I would guess maybe too much weight in the trailer and speed=break. It's good you weren't out there by your lonesome that wouldda been a mess.

North Pass Trip Report:
After dropping Chris off in Lone Pine, I headed back to the hot springs to rejoin the group on Monday.  Came in through Big Pine, down Waocoba road and Saline Valley road.  Most of the route was good dirt road. I did 40-45mph for about 2/3 of the route.  They had the "road closed" signs up at the Waucoba/Saline Valley road intersection, but lots of tire tracks going around that.  There were also "road closed" signs at 168/Waucoba Road, but those just warned that the road to Scotty's Castle was closed twenty something miles ahead.

The canyon coming down from North Pass into the upper end of Saline Valley was a bit washed out for a few miles, but nothing I could not get through in two wheel drive. Bumpy and minor rutting.

There was one large washout about 16 miles north of the hot springs.  It was located in a deep dip in the road.  I was cruising at 45mph when I approached it. Luckily, it was marked with a cone on the north side and a log sticking out of a pile of rocks on the south side.  That gave me enough time to hit the brakes.  I would have ended up butt in the air if I had slide into that coming over the rise at that speed. A path around had been rocked up by prior travelers.

All in all, no problems coming and going via North Pass out of Saline Valley.

I did find it humorous to pull into the group camp at the hot springs and see almost the same group of McGiver's working on the Tacoma.  Didn't I just leave this scene yesterday??  Deja vue!

I'll leave it to others to report on the repairs and other parts of the trip.  Great time!  Thank you Chris for organizing and Danny for leading us through.

Very glad to see it worked out OK, I'm loving the photos of how wide open it is on the racetrack.
