Marty and I went out to Anza Borrego on Sunday to check out the wildflowers and do a bit of exploring around Buttes Pass Road. Two places we wanted to check out were Hawk Canyon and a hiking trail called The Slot. Hawk Canyon had some great wildflowers, and also some very nice looking campsites, including a few with nice big fire rings (which are rare in Anza Borrego). Some of the spots looked like they could easily support several trucks.
The wildflowers were not as good as we had hoped for, it seems this is the year for yellow (not like the vast carpets of purple and white we saw last year). We stopped to check out a few of the sculptures first, including the giant sloth and baby giant sloth.

One of the campsites in Hawk Canyon. The canyon is an easy couple mile drive from SR-78.

Towards the back of Hawk Canyon, at the end of the driveable trail. You can hike on further up the canyon.

Apparently this flower with the 5 spots is rare, at least according some girl we met out there. It was her goal to find one. We found a whole bunch of them.

We're not sure what the real name of the Helmet Head Caterpillar is.

From Hawk Canyon we backtracked south on Buttes Pass, then west on Borrego Mountain Road, stopping first to check out The Slot, then on to the top of the one-way Drop Off. It was too badly rutted with large holes, and it was getting late, so we stayed there to enjoy the sunset and moonrise.

"Them" is the name of one of the all time best movies ever. You really have to see it to appreciate it. It's from 1954, and would be a great flick for Oz's Desert Drive-In Theater. It's great for anyone who enjoys spending time in the desert.
Terror
Horror
Excitement
Mystery
Here is the trailer.
