Anyone into varmint hunting? I still need to get license and stupid hunting class card.
Any tips, anyone interested?
Thanks, Duffman
-
Absolutely interested.
Do you need a hunting license for varmints? Or are there specific varmints you are interested in?
-
When I took mine at Bass Pro Shop I had to pay a fee to save my spot and and after I passed the class they gave me back a gift certificate for the amount I paid. I don't know if they still do that but it was a nice deal.
Hunter's Safety Education Courses
Bass Pro is also proud to sponsor Hunter

Thanks Goon, I like the sound of that deal.
Terry and I both need to make a phone call I think.
Is there anyone else with experience who's interested. I'm thinking coyotes cuz we don't have prairie dogs ;)
I know that I need the class cert. and a license.
I've read all the F&G.gov crap until I'm thoroughly confused about where I can and can't go.
I'm not looking to steal anyones secret spot, just some fun without going to jail.
Thanks, guys

I know of a few places. You really just need to be 300' from any dwelling or road (about 150 yards) and just use some common sense. Rifle rounds could travel a lot more than 300'.
Once you get your license, coyotes are open season. If you want to get into fowl for big game there are seasons.
-
It's open season on coyotes, and with the Russian Razor backs it's open season, but you still need a tag which are $25 each the last time I checked. No nuthin required for ground squirrels.
-
Yeah the ground squirrels around my house have been 'open season' since I moved here ;)
If we got razor backs in so.cal, I'll get a couple of tags. (And my .308)
Thanks guys, I'm off to hunting school (California dogma indoctrination).
When I get my sh** together, I will post up a hunt/4wheel date.
Thanks again.

OK guys, I got my license and hunter safety card from Pro Bass, thanks for the tip Goon. The class is free and good forever and the license is $48., July to July. Be sure to get your Adventure Pass for parking in the woods. Buy two and split the cost with an SCCXer, it's way cheaper. I still got your pass Ghost.
I'm off to talk with local forrest offices to find out where exactly hunting is legal.
-
Contact the department of fish and game for that info, varmint hunting is a wonderful pastime that I do often. I know of quite a few places out on my neck of the woods where the ground squirrels and rabbits run all over the place. Hit me up sometime, we'll have a blast!
-
I'm in... Got my license (Grandfathered because I had a hunting license from Utah within two years prior). I'm armed and loaded in a big way ;D and ready to go. Just name the time and place. Let's go!!
-
That's great news Terry.
I'm gonna scout for some areas while talking to rangers, then let me know who's up for a weekday hunt ;D
-
weekday hunt? ;D
Anytime after Feb 2.
-
So Randy and I went out last Friday and were able to sight in on a few critters and actually able to hit something once too! Had a blast Randy, looking forward to the next one!
-
I'd like to get in on some of this action.
-
OK when we going out again I'm ready to go.
-
Hey Clint,
Thanks for getting me out to your 'secret spot' It was a great day.
I got skunked (varmint fever, shaky gun), but a Volvo hit a coyote a mile up the road. Although, I'm taking half the credit for calling it in. (the coyote, not the Volvo). Friday mornings in Hemit are best right now, but you will have to check with Clint about wearing a hood or not to his favorite spots.
-
I'd be happy to go again... Just let me know when you're free!
-
I just put together a new ar, guess I need to get a hunting license.

You got it Clint. Is there any time next week you would be available? And how big a caliber rifles do you think we could fire?
-
We could shoot for next Friday morning (13th). I'm free from 845am to 3pm. I have a place close by to shoot large caliber rifles also, I shoot my .223 and my .308 out there all the time.
Text or call me @ 7605941783

Yeah Jordan, you need to sit through an 8 hour class or 4 in class + 4 on line. I went through Bass Pro in Cucamunga for free, but it's a long drive. Hope you can find something closer.
Hey Clint, I would like to get out this Friday if you're free. Next Friday the 13th (yikes) I'm booked.
Terry, I'm gonna try and scout the Cleveland NF this or next week. I got 'official' maps yesterday from the CNF ranger station. I'll post up what I find and we can try some local hunting.
-
Randy, this Friday is booked for me, Danny (toro) is coming to the house to help me do my titan swap! We'll have to get together some other time buddy
-
found a local place about 10 mins away from me thats free/donation multi day deal so im going to check that out this weekend.
-
Good luck on the swap, Danny's the man, catch 'em when you can.
I guess I will be scoping in my .223 for long range fun.
Jordan: Free/Donation, 10 mins away? Please do report in.
-
Hey Clint, did anybody get out last week? I would like to join you this Friday if you're up for it.
Jordan: Free/Donation, 10 mins away? Please do report in.
I've been scouting the San Mateo Wilderness area: some poops no sightings.
-
Last week was Titan Swap at my Casa thanks to Danny! I'm good for this week, Terry wanted to come play too! Give me a call anytime and we'll set it up. Also, Randy, PM me or call me with your address...i'll swing by on Saturday for the impromptu MOD Day at your house and lend a hand!
-
I smell varmints this Friday! Who's in?

Sounds like the back is better? Sure hope so....you were missed last weekend buddy!!
-
Thanks Christiaan, yeah now I can walk, ride, hike or sit, but only an hour at a time each :-\
-
Hey I'm in. Where and when?
-
Well Clint can't make it, so we don't need to go to Hemit. I was thinking of entering CNF from Murietta at 9am, but I'm open since you're coming from OC. Let me know what you think.
-
Hey I'm good for wherever you think we can get some shooting in. I kind of like the long guns. ;D So let me know where to be and when.
-
Sounds interesting.
-
It's almost time to start dispatching some critters...the weather is about to get cool enough to get a few morning hours in!!!
-
So name it Clint. WHEN????
-
Just wanna add a side note. I am a gun owner, but not really into hunting. Target practice always gets my attention. I currently own a gun which shoots NATO rounds, infamous 5.56. Looking to pick up a long range sniper type weapon w 24 or 26 in. barrel prolly great for hunting, but still just to knock a few targets down at 300 yards or so!
-
Yes, it is cool enough to go a huntin'. Let's do it.
Just to let everyone know, there are plenty of places to go hunting around here, but very few places to just shoot. I know it sounds backwards, but too many shooters have left a mess, so the Man keeps shutting down those areas.
But licensed hunters are more responsible (and pay fees) so they can still shoot, but must shoot for a kill.
So, if you got your license and know a spot, post up. We will always PM each other the exact location to protect our secret spots ;)
