I love plowing snow, when, where and I'm there.
-
I'm down. I got a 4x4 stock X though
-
In these pics, my truck only has a 1.5" lift and AT tires. Nothing technical about this, just plain fun!
-
Count me in, when are you guys thinking of going?
-
In a couple of weeks. There is more snow coming these next few weeks. The roads are requiring chains though...even 4wd with aggressive tires.
-
yup, yup, yup, yup!!!!!! ;D
-
I love the snow! I'm down.
-
got chains, will follow
-
Can I codawg with somebody? I've never driven snowy icy roads and don't want my first time doing that to be in convoy with the xterra dudes.
I'll chip in for gas!
Bueller?
-
Steve, I'll probably have the whole band with me...but if I dont, you can def roll with me.
-
Depending on when this happens and if my gf is busy baking, I may have an open shotgun for ya Steve.

where can one find a deal on chains?

Wrong season to find a deal on chains, I'm sure everywhere has them marked up to take advantage of new snow

Well, I've been calling around and everywhere that I thought would sell snow chains, doesn't for the most part. Autozone in Rancho Cucamonga has cables and chains in stock for anywhere from $60-$100 and Pepboys on Foothill and Hellman has only cables for $100. I also found these on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ladder-Cable-SUV-Lt-Truck-Snow-Traction-Tire-Chains-Size-265-70-16-265-70R16-/201187491789?hash=item2ed7b57fcd&vxp=mtr (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ladder-Cable-SUV-Lt-Truck-Snow-Traction-Tire-Chains-Size-265-70-16-265-70R16-/201187491789?hash=item2ed7b57fcd&vxp=mtr).

What's better, chains or cables?
-
I know that chains can cut up your tires and they mess up roads worse than cables for the most part. Here is a discussion taht I found, but haven't had the time to watch the videos yet of people discussing the same topic: http://community.cartalk.com/discussion/2282156/tire-chains-vs-cables-and-winter-driving-tips (http://community.cartalk.com/discussion/2282156/tire-chains-vs-cables-and-winter-driving-tips)

I had a bad experience with chains. I link broke and trashed the side of my truck. I carry cables and some 1x4's if I'm even thinking of going to the snow. Never had to use them, even in really icy conditions. 4W Lo gets me through everything.
-
I'm heading up to Big Bear tmrw and staying till Friday. going to do some snowboarding, I'll let you guys know how the conditions are.
-
Chains and cables are for ice, not snow. On the trail, 4 low with your tires aired down works better than both chains and cables, especially in a sloppy mixture of snow and mud or powder. If you have 4wd and there is a chain checkpoint, you likely will just need to show that you have chains in the car. R3 requirements are rare (chains on all vehicles, no exceptions.) Chains that are put on properly are way stronger than cables but aren't necessary for people that live down the hill.
If you don't have experience with chains/cables, practice putting them on your tires at home on dry level ground. Learning to put on chains on the side of an icy highway is not fun or smart. As Tim said, also carry some blocks of wood (1x4 or 2x4) that you can place in the center of the chains and roll on top of to get your wheels off the ground. This allows you to get them nice and tight the first time.
-
Pretty much everything goon said. Especially the part about putting them on at home, I practice every year before going out where I might need them just as a refresher. Never had to use them in snow, just show I had them.
-
Any way you guys will be down for making this run on Friday.
We just got a dumping of snow at 2000ft. Should be fun!
-
I have to work friday. So no go for me.
-

I'm out, I'll wait for a bit more snow.
We only had an inch of snow stick at my house at 3800' and it already melted. Bear Mt. is reporting 8 inches of snow at the resort.
-
I am heading to Julian in the AM with the wife if anyone wants to tag along.
-

We are leaving here shortly.

I took this photo in Lake Elsinore at 1400' on Tuesday night. They got about 6" at that level, and most of it is still there today. We got about 2" in Murrieta where I am. Mostly melted now, but a little bit remains in the planter boxes and what not. The hills around the city (Santa Rosa Plateau, etc) are still covered pretty good.
