Title: Mojave Road 04.17 - 04.19.2015
Post by: Toro on October 27, 2014, 10:21:04 PM
Time to start planning this trip. We are 6 months out and want to put this together.
I want to make this a 3 day trip at a more relaxed pace. We will be running East to West beginning at the Avi Casino.

Head to Laughlin on Thursday the 16th. Stay at hotel/camp. Hit the road Friday the 17th. Camp Friday and Saturday  night along the road. Finish road on Sunday the 19th. No real wheeling, just a desert trip and camping through a historical, 120 mile, desert road.
We would be starting in Laughlin, at the AVI Casino, on the morning of the 17th and head west towards I-15. Camp Phallus the first night and Hole in the wall, Camp Mojave or Beal Mt on Saturday night. We can take a vote but I think I'd like to end it at Afton Canyon and avoid the "Mojave River".
This is stock (running boards and mud flaps style) and family friendly.

If I don't have your cell, please PM it to me

Due to permits for large groups, this run is capped at 15 vehicles and 30 people.

Life happens and people always cancel. If you have interest in this run, get added to the stand by list. Odds are, someone's gold fish will die or inlaws will show up for the weekend.
We will not run a second smaller group to circumvent the permit. I'm on the hook and held responsible with the Mojave National Preserve and don't want to poke a bear.

The AVI Casino is located at

10000 Aha Macau Pkwy,
Laughlin, NV 89029

We will meet in the parking to get together and meet and great. There is a gas station and a convenience store in the parking lot of the AVI. Ice, gas, snacks and beer will be available.
I would like to roll out at 1100 at the latest.  Please be gassed up and ready to roll around 1030. It will take time to get a group this big going. Then we have to account for the buried phone.

Things you need to have or be aware of and required.
-5 good tires.
-Rig in good working condition. Check all your fluids and spot check your belts and hoses
-Working 4wd
-At least 1 spare tire with in 2" in size to the tires on your rig. No Doughnuts.
-A Jack that can alow you to change a tire in uneven ground
-A CB Radio. (plenty of time to get one)

-Dogs are more than welcome but please keep them on a leash while out and about.

-Enough fuel to travel 200 miles in 4wd
-Minimum 1 Gallon of water per person per day
-Tow strap
-If you air down, be prepared to refill
-Basic tools
-Sanitation supplies for camping. If your digging holes, bring your own shovel. Bio-Degradable TP
-First Aide Kit

-We will pack out all trash and leave nothing behind (except for underground poo)
-Bring trash bags for yourself.

-Temperatures in the Desert can vary. Be prepared for anything. The higher elevations can be down right freezing and the lowers can easily reach 120 in the summer.
-You will have to take a dump at some point so plan ahead and dont wait till the last min.

-What ever you need to camp comfortably
-Bring enough batteries and memory for cameras
-Binoculars
-Wide brimmed hat
-Flashlights, lantern
-Good walking shoes
-A camping chair and somewhere to prop your feet will be nice
-GPS. Hand held or carmount
-Books or maps of trail/road

We will be on the road for the better part of three days. Please plan your meals accordingly. Breakfast, Lunch and Snacks.
If your not a camper and would like some advice please PM me for my little tricks.

We will be swinging three potlucks this time.
Friday night
Saturday morning
and
Saturday nighy

A good reference guide is a good idea. I like and use,
http://www.amazon.com/Mojave-Road-Guide-Adventure-Through/dp/0914224379/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1357196426&sr=8-1&keywords=mojave+road+guide

this version is limited on the Mojave Rd but has enough the be helpful

Comm's
Please remember to pick up a CB. I will not be doing FRS. We will communicating 100% by CB. Ham radio will only be used to talk isht about those with out Ham radio's . With a group this size, Ham will be used to have solid Comm's btwn lead and tail....and god forbid, in case of emergency. There are many reasonable options available.

This is my set up...and it's awsome.

Opinions on CB's are like belly buttons. Everyone's got one.

We will be working CB channel 17 and 2m simplex 146.535

points of interest

This trip destroys in cabin filters. The fine sand of the Mojave gets into everything.  Please consider changing your filter before and after the trip.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001D566IG/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_gMMktb1SK8DPA
These have less pleats than the OE filter so it won't last as long...but at these prices, that's okay.

We will be hauling out ALL trash. If you have a tire carrier you might want to consider a Trasharoo.
http://trasharoo.3dcartstores.com/
These guys keep the trash out of your rig. Keeps the smell out and frees up precious cargo space.

If your running an oiled cone filter, consider running a dry pre-filter. The fine sand will get stuck to the filter and and start sucking down the MPG's even further.
 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001034E6W/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_EZMktb18JKRHK
This particular one is for 9" base and 7" top diameters. This will only alow the finest of sand to get through. Find what works for yours and give it shot. It will pay for itself on this one trip.

Pot Luck and other stuff..........

We will be on the road for two nights and we will eat like kings. The meals will be themed but believe me, all grub is welcomed. There will be three separate chances to binge.

Friday night one will be Mexican-ish.

Saturday Morning Breakfast.

Saturday Night two will be Italian-esk.

Sunday Morning...everyone on there own.

We have all learned form recent and previous trips that the deversity of grub is what makes these a blast. Please chime in if there is anything you would like to bring and share with the group.
    Choose a day and let-r-rip.

Night 1 - Friday....................................................

We will be grilling Ranchera (the good stuff) it's about $6/lb. if you would like to contribute, 3lb's I would be happy to purchase and haul it out there.

Carne Asada
1. Toro
2. MotoPig77
3. Carne Asada

Main Dish

2.
3.

Sides
1. Dutch Oven beans - Celt
2. Flour Tortillas - Celt
3. Fajita onions, peppers and Jalape

So if you go the other way, where will you be overnighting Danny?  Will you end in Laughlin?
Title: Re:
Post by: Toro on October 28, 2014, 06:09:12 AM
All are invited Steve.

If we go west to east, night 1 will be where we normally camp and night 2 will be north of the trail. Somewhere new....not sure yet.
We would end up in Laughlin on night 3.
Heading East to West, night 1 would be in a new location and night 2 would be In the usual spot.

Count me in along with the wife. My preference is the traditional east to west route, since I'd rather make the trip out to Laughlin the first day and end the trip closer to home on the final day. But I'm perfectly fine with whatever everyone else wants.

Hey that sounds fun either way.   Might be nice to end at Laughlin though...    Shower, nice meal, gambling, soft bed at the end of the run.   Hm.. ;D

IN  **+1**

I would vote for East to West only because the drive home is long enough after being behind the wheel all weekend long

(wishful thinking, but better to be safe than sorry!)

15 spots spoken for. A standby list has been started.

I am looking at Camp Phallus for night 1 on the trail.  It's high desert and should be nice and cool.

Night 2 will be the usual spot.

Should we pot luck on night 1 or 2....or both?

I vote for both nights...that way we can stagger the surprisingly large amount of food we have left over each year.  ;D

Maybe Trail Style Baked Pizza/Spaghetti Feed on night one (Christiaan, etc.), and the traditional Carne Asada Feed (Danny T.) on night two?

(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/Mojave%20Road%202013/DSC_0065.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/Mojave%20Road%202013/DSC_0065.jpg.html)

Pasta/sauce is easy, packs light, mixes well with social sparklers, and feeds an empty trail stomach well.

Merely suggestions...

Sounds good.
Because of the parishability of Carne Asada, we'll go for that on night one.
I like the pasta/Italian theme for night 2. As we get closer to the date, we will hammer out the details.
With this many people and this much gear, we can probably have a breakfast group too.

We will have to conserve our firewood a bit to make two nights.  So no drinking the first night, OK?....OK?....

Count me in for the breakfast grill and eggs and bacon and pancakes and ???

Speakin of firewood, I happen to know where there is a good full acre of manaznita just waiting to be cut down for said trip. It would be nice and cured by the time of this trip. I could use a hand or two though in cuttin that stuff up and keeping the saws sharp. They play havoc on a chainsaw. The best part of this is you wouldn't have to haul out your poop!

I do believe the wood issue has been solved for this event...... XTerry and Motorpig cut up plenty while I sat back sipping a frosty beverage.

Wish I could make this one, we are still waiting to hear where we are going to be stationed next.  Eligible since August, so any day now something will drop down the pipe for us.

I will have my kids with me this year. I will not be hauling ass like in past years. I'm guessing I'll still be at a brisk pace but will absolutely not be doing anything that will result in 4 tires leaving the ground.

Hey Danny, I was thinking about this run over the weekend.  First, I need to add a codawg for this.  So steve c +1

We are going to do this in 3 days right?  Driving the road Friday, Saturday and Sunday?

Is anyone planning on getting to Laughlin (pending our direction of travel, E to W or W to E) Thursday the 16th?  I'd like to be fresh for the drive in the morning.

Maybe we could get a group deal again like last time?

Well I was actually coming on here because I'm looking into going through steele pass to the eureka dunes either the last weekend of mark, or the first weekend of April, ie wife's spring break. The main reason is to go out and see some wildflowers and enjoy the outdoors.

It was fracking cold at night and in the mornings.

There are definitely some 4x4 required sections now.  Nothing 4 low territory, but 4x4 for sure.
The technical downhill into the wash was a bit more deteriorated now.  If there is a revision to the guide book in the future, I'd bet they deem it impassable and just advise the reroute.

Soda Lake was epic.  However, the run in to it was very rutted and chunked up.

We started the road at about 3pm on Thursday.  Camped at Balancing Rock Campground the first night, stayed at camp Mojave the second night and Camped just after Soda Lake the third night.  We skipped the Afton Canyon area.  Exited on Razor Road to the 15.

Two full days of driving and a mid day departure off the trail on the third is a great way to do it.  I'm excited for this years SCCX trip!

I'm really thinking about picking this (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000AQO12/ref=s9_simh_gw_p86_d0_i3?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=0QBJ1H1NJQCBQP7P288B&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=1970559082&pf_rd_i=desktop) up.  Think of the volume of pancakes and bacon achievable by such a contraption.

Please put me down for;

1 Camp Chef two burner stove.
1 Perfect Flame table top propane BBQ
(enough propane for these to be used during all cooking events if their services are required)

2 bundles of firewood (or more if needed)

Regarding contributions for the *themed* meals, would it be better for me to choose or be told what to bring?

That thing (as well as Clint's Nuclear Bunson Burner) was epic for cooking Steve.

I will have a Coleman white gas stove for sale...soon.  As well as an REI camp kitchen.

John, before you buy new, check craigslist.  There are quite a few on there and if you find the right one, you'll probably be able to find one for sale with the case, stove and propane cylinder.

Terry, Clint, Sergio and I cut a boat ton of manzanita specifically for this run. The only issue I have is getting it handed out so folks can each take a couple bundle sized piles in their rigs? Maybe trailering it to a central spot and folks can grab it up.

ok sorry for the late post but i am getting the rooms at harrahs setup, the rate offered was $25 for the North Tower Classic Double Queen Room.
this rate is for single/double occupancy and not including 12% clark county room tax and $7.50 Resort Fee, more than 2 people is $10 extra a person with a max of 4 people per room(if you choose to tell them you have more than 2 is up to you).  total with tax and fee is around $36.

looking at the website, the same room is available for $26.99 a night so the savings here is very minimal. due to the minimal savings im going to just skip the group rate and tell everyone to just book your hotel through the website as normal.  the total for the same room without the group rate is $38.63, other rooms are available and are priced from $22.49 for a single king.

this will allow everyone flexibility to book the room that best meets your needs(loners want a single king, families probably want double queen)  also if anyone wants to share rooms, the prices are for double occupancy.

Post by: knightrider on March 05, 2015, 09:11:04 AM
cheaper rates are on the north tower, rooms we had last year were north tower deluxe rooms.

floors will vary and probably wont know that until you check in, the only advantage of the group rate is they do try to get everyone close together but that doesnt always happen.

I doubt I'll make the cut, but please put me on the standby list +1.

At this rate, we might be able to make a whole second group of 15. It's a shame they make it such a PITA to camp or have large groups.

I know I know!  Ideally I'd get one of those stick things, but it gets complicated with the various adapters and reducers to accommodate the different size fittings.  I just haven't given it the thought process it deserves.  Maybe I'll do a schematic or something.

Hey guys just a reminder that SoCalXTerry, Motorpig77 and I cut up a bunch of wood for the Mojave Rd. I'd like to try and get a consensus of who is going that's down here in the San Diego area. I can drive up on a day off and try to bundle a bunch of it up then bring it down into the city and get it delivered out. Maybe on a food truck Thursday or similar? If you guys would rather buy your own bundles that's fine too just letting everyone know it's available.

Same here! I didn't realize it was just barely over 2 weeks away. Funny how things sneak up on you.

I still have all kinds of stuff to get done on my rig. Gotta finish hooking up the new CB, and order a PA speaker, and finish the bracket for the roof that is going to hold gas cans, and finish my solar shower, and install my engine skid, and...  :o Maybe I should take some days off work this week.

I still got a bit of rig prep.  Need to install a cooling fan on the radiator.  I tend to heat up a bit, and with the 35's on, I don't want to take a chance.  Still need to get a 35 in spare, got to troubleshoot my Ironman fridge, it's not cooling down past 50~ish anymore, gotta lube up the suspension, get all the camping gear out and ready to go, trying to convince Shi to let me take out the new toy (*cough 2015 BMW F800 GS Adventure), and she can drive the X.  Figure out what we are going to do with our dog, clean and lube the firearms in case we bring them... yeah, busy next couple of weeks.

Also if anyone is interested, I have 2 amsoil air filters for stock intakes, these are cleanable dry air filters with a 4 yr/100,000 mile warranty.  They hold quite a bit if dirt so they are perfect for install before Mojave.  2 avail at $10 each.

Hey Randy, I don't think Jordan can make it to Mojave this year.
If I have enough daylight, I'll bring it by your house on my way back north on Saturday.
I'm sure you two can square the $10 up somehow.

If I can't swing by your house on Saturday, I'll bring it to Mojave Road!
Title: Re: Mojave Road 04.17 - 04.19.2015
Post by: JFanaselle on April 02, 2015, 04:16:42 PM
Hey Jordan - I'll take the other one. I'll give you the money at the next food truck event (which, now that I look at the calendar, probably won't be until May since the 3rd Thursday in April is the 16th and that's when most of us leave for the Mojave trip). I can PayPal it to you if you want it faster, just let me know.

Steve - can you bring it to Mojave as well? Or if you swing by Randy's house on Saturday, let me know and I'll meet up with you. If you do swing by his place and plan to take the 15 to the 91 to get home, I can meet you somewhere in Temecula or Murrieta right off of the 15.

I don't mind picking it up.

I'll keep you posted on whether or not I stop at Randy's.

Kind of depends on how long the work takes at Jordan's.

Either way, it's a quick install (parking lot job for sure)

Permit update.
As of today, Thursday the 9th, we have not been issued a permit yet. I have attempted to communicate several times and finally heard from the preserve.

"I have received your application, but have not reviewed it yet.  I am trying to get caught up with a large backlog of permit applications, compliance reviews, and other workload.  I will be in touch once I have had a chance to look your application over.  Thanks."

They received it over 2 months ago and I am hopeful we will get this squared away this week. They sure cashed the hell out of the check I sent them though.
I will, of course, keep everyone updated.

Worst case scenario on the permits, we break up into two different groups and run the trail in close proximity to each other... Technically, we would just need to make sure we have less than 7 vehicles and 15 people per group.  I would hate to see this run her disrupted because of someone's inefficiency in the permit office!

Erik...believe it or not, ham repeater coverage inside the preserve is very sparse.

Here is a link to a focused discussion on repeaters/freqs. for the Mojave Road on EP:

Mojave Road Repeaters (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/139798-Mohave-road-repeaters?highlight=mojave+road+repeaters)

Scroll down to post #6 for a cool link to a map that shows Newberry Springs/Barstow/Needles as the only repeater coverage outside "The Road".

Hope that helps!  :)

I was thinking about noon-ish myself from the Temecula area. Going to take the I-10 and go up through Twentynine Palms and Amboy instead of the traditional I-40 route, just to enjoy the desert drive a little more. Any SD folks heading up around the same time that want to caravan? I'm a little flexible on time but want to get to Laughlin soon enough to enjoy myself a little.

I should be leaving my place about noon and will be up your way maybe about 1240 or so, wouldn't mind caravanning as long as you know I need to keep it 65-70 for fuel consumption.

Here's my first post on the board, checking to see if there's a spot available for this weekend! My plans just cleared up and I'd love to join if there's a vehicle opening out of the 15 total. I live in Fullerton and can meet out in NV Thursday evening as planned. Let me know, hope it works out. John

Welcome.
I see you are new and have not filled out the required SCCX application or paid your membership dues.
This run is considered a premium event and comands the required "private run fees" as well.
I don't think there will be enough time for the committee to convene in time for this event.

I have to come clean. I've owned 4 4x4s, the X is the only non-Jeep. To my (hopefully) credit, non of the 3 jeeps were wranglers of any kind. And also this:

I have a heart, even for Jeep owners.

While I can definitely respect the classic beauty shown, I must remind you...

JEEP = Just Empty Every Pocket

And, if you stick around long enough, you'll meet a few SCCX members who have actually pulled heeps out of trouble.

In all seriousness....welcome!  Make sure you get the comms situation handled if you're gonna come on TMR; they're really handy to have and you may even get to witness a true SCCX treasure...the mysterious

I've decided to depart earlier tomorrow morning and make a full day out of the drive there. My brother and I will depart the Murrieta/Temecula area around 9:00 am and drive out to Amboy. Take a hike around the Amboy Crater before heading over to Roy's Diner for a quick refreshing soda. Then off to explore an old mine I found in the area last time I was out there, and then we'll head out to Laughlin. Should be in town by 4:00 pm at the latest. See you all there!

Our initial plan was to leave when the kids were out of school at 2.

Should I shlep it inside the Harrahs?  Maybe move it into the truck for the night?

Speaking of parking, where is everyone planning to park?
I put letters on a google map to maybe help with a consensus.

A is a parking structure.  I don't fit inside, but I think I parked on top last time.

As always, I had an amazing weekend and I already can't wait for next year!!

A few thoughts:

-I really like how well the food thing played out.  In the future, I hope we can delegate some other things like utencils/plates/etc to make sure we have enough for the group

-3 days was such a great idea.  Gave us the time to explore and check out new stuff....such as, the new campsite for night 1 (phallus rock? is that a real name or do we have one?)

-We really got both extremes in terms of weather this time around....Fri night at 5500 ft was downright COLD....and Sunday afternoon, while checking out the mine, mid 90's was....mildly oppressive

-Bummed I missed out on the Zzyzx trip, but I was cooked and ready for the long drive home

I have to say; I love how SCCX does it.  We had plenty of people from different walks of life....we had a Jeeper who stumbled upon us at Ft. Paiute, who ended up following us around the rest of the weekend....a guy who signed up on the site a day earlier and snuck onto the list at the last moment...but, we all hung out and came together like we've known each other forever.  The signs of a very strong group.

Shout-outs:

-FIRE JENGA

-THAT DAMN CAMPING SPOT UP THE HILL FROM US ON THE 1ST NIGHT.  IT WILL BE OURS.  OH, YES, IT WILL BE

-RANDY.  OH MY LORD.  ALL TIME FIRESIDE CHAT SATURDAY NIGHT.  I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO BLACKOUT FROM LAUGHING TOO HARD.  HOLY CRAP.

-GREAT FOOD CONTRIBUTIONS ALL AROUND....DANNY FOR THE CARNE-ASADA AND THOSE SHORT RIBS...AKA MEAT-KNUCKLES.....SOOO GOOD!!!  AND THEN THE PB PANCAKES....AND EGG & SAUSAGE ALA DUFFMAN BREAKFASTS.....DELISH!!!  PLUS THE YUMMY STEW AND PASTA SATURDAY NIGHT...I THINK I GAINED WEIGHT OVER THE WEEKEND!!!

Thanks to everyone who came out...I had a great time and made some new friends for sure!!
