Just got the following email from Greg Hoffman: (I would like to get ideas from everyone regarding dates and participation. There is a great group campground right on 2N01 just off of highway 38 that could accommodate at least 8 rigs camping and throw in a couple RV's if we want).
So your comments are appreciated
Hello Adopt-a-Trail Volunteers. It

That sounds good. I say we camp when it gets above 50* ;D
I would still like to get that old trashed car up and out of there.

Very ambitious Duffman. I like it, now if we could get the equipment together to do that.
I'm suspecting that the campgrounds won't be open til May anyway.
-
I have given the car situation a lot of thought and I have a plan.
-
Cool. A plan is really really good. I wonder what the scrap metal value of that thing would be. May offset some cost.
-
Acetylene torch and a fire extinguisher? Cut that shit in half. :-) yes I like cutting stuff.

That torch and a couple winches, maybe a few poly drums we can cut in half to place under the axles to make sliding the hulk up the hillside then we can throw pieces of it on my 1 ton trailer b4 I turn it into a camper, aka the TerraPod.
-
I got the torch, extinguisher and a half ton flat trailer. And of course the Taco winch from USKO 8)
-
Wow I'm impressed with the equipment we have. If I remember this thing is actually sitting on a field of rocks, so fire danger should be diminished somewhat from the use of torches. I was thinking of a large gas powered circular saw maybe to get quickly through the sheet metal.
Toro did your plan include fire too?
I think we have enough winches between us all to move the mountain. The only issue we need to worry about is the length of time we block the road to get these pieces out. I believe there is an area to park down the road, then we could cut and move rigs into place, pull the piece out, open the road, then cut some more. Rinse and repeat.
Think we need to plan a quick run to get all the brains together for further strategy. And we can make some real fun out of this effort with the AAT offer for a group campground for us to make a fun weekend of it.
So lets see who might be interested in:
- Making a quick run in the next couple of weeks to further scope out the car situation
- Would be interested in a camping weekend to work on the car
- What would be possible summer weekends to do this, considering all the conflicts us active Southern Californians are going to have
Thanks
-
IIRC...there was a trail below as well...maybe cut and pull down, rather than up?
Also...saving a couple of cool cosmetic parts to use/serve/weld/sculpt as an SCCX monument for marking the trail might be a cool idea?
I'd like to help too...LMK.

I'm in for Tuesday or Wednesday recon

No fire on the trail. That will defiantly put a lot at risk.
One harnessed, "Trained" person repel down to the car. Secure it with winch lines from 2 rigs above.
At JV, my winch Dead lifted a Gen 1 X about 30ft up a wall to a clearing above. Two 12k winches will do with out unnecessary time over the edge. (Me and Terry)
We will need a third winch to secure the vehicle off a snatch block while the lifting winches reposition.
The trailer rig will be positioned and carcus pulled up onto the trailer.
The key will be obtaining permission to close the trail. Having Ham radio operators at the bottom of Burns Canyon, Rattle Snake ,Yucca (Pioneer Town) and Big Bear will be key. We can communicate by repeater.
I have maps and have thought this through.
Perhaps Ranger Greg has someone in his arsenal that is experienced and can go over the edge.
-
I know a ham radio operator that works for a Canopy Tour with all the necessary rappelling equipment.
-
Word! I was hoping you'd chime in. Didn't want to volunteer you.
-
It sounds like a ton of fun! I just can't do it on a weekend... A Tuesday or Wednesday would be ideal for me.

That is a great idea. Especially with the fire danger this year. Actually, by my memory (As bad as it is) I didn't thing that incline the car was one was very steep nor long. As a matter of fact, while touring 2N02 with Greg we stopped and a number of people climbed down to the car to check it out. I swear Ghostx was one.
But I like it, I will work with Greg about when it can happen, duration of road closures and how notification is done. One thing though we might want to consider is it might be really great to have torches around once we get it out to cut it up for transport.
Let's keep going. With all these great ideas.
I'm still proposing a combination checkout the CARS wheeling trip for the next 3-4 weeks. If anybody is interested and have a preferred date let me know.
-
I can volunteer my winch, but it's only 8000lb....
Lemme know if it can be of use!

Do you have a photo of the car?

Yep...Doug and I climbed down and took photos of and assessed the wreck. It is especially steep right at the top, with the biggest challenge being the road above is literally a one lane shelf road at that point in the trail.
Definitely going to need some experience on the winches/blocks/straps to recover this.
I'll offer any help I can, but will be the first to admit this job is a bit above my pay grade and experience. :)
-
Thanks John for the photos and information.
Do you remember how far it was from the road to the Olds?
-
Why don't we just use a small generator and a sawzall to cut the body up and load it onto Duff and My trailer in smaller chunks. Hell, we can even section the frame once we hoist it to the top or bottom. My 1 Ton Military trailer also pivots as a dump bed.
-
How did that thing get there?

Not sure...halfway point maybe?
Definitely aliens.
-
It's just over the halfway mark from Big Bear side. I think Shi marked it on our Garmin, I can check when I get home this afternoon for the details of the location.
-
O March? Hmm that could be fun for a look see. You been to Pontiac Sluice before or Tip Top Mtn or Gold Mtn?
Nope, nope, and nope... But I'm down to check them out.

I think a sawzall cutting through metal would still kick up sparks. There is going to be plenty of risk no matter how we try to get it out.
-
Any cutting or torching will require several hours of road closure. We need to muscle it up the hill and onto a low flat bed.
-
When we do the midweek 'inspection', let's take a tool set, hack saw and a come-a-long hand winch to see what we can separate (motor, axels, heavy stuff) while it's in place. Someone could drop off the tools and workers for a couple hours to keep the trail clear, then come back and pick them up and maybe some smaller bits of the Olds.
Does anyone know more about the 'lower trail' below the Olds?
-

Thanks, that would be a huge help.

Yup that is 2N70Y. Been there, did it. And no it is not an option for getting the Olds out. Matter of fact, yet another fun little spur of 2N02 folks. Pretty exciting it is.

Looks like I'll be free at least one more week. Is Tuesday/Wednesday of next week for recon still a possibility?
Randy/Terry/Danny-maybe we should bring a couple of hi lift 's too?

im available, i can bring tools and my small sawzall. ive got some ideas on how to get this thing out.
-
I should be good for one day or the other. Wont know which 'til tomorrow.
-
You can see it from the road. It's not hard to miss.
-
Hey folks have fun and be careful. Just log your time, remember it is door to door and kids get time and a half. Pics or it doesn't happen ;)
Oh ya like Danny said can't miss it.
-
That's going to be a lot of Sawall blades.
-
That's going to be a lot of Sawall blades.
AMEN!
-
We aren't a sissy group. We got 6 big cylinders and enough weight. Big winches and fuz to use them. Don't make more work for Ourselveses. A couple chains around the frame to some heavy winches will bring that right up.
-
Cool. Have you all selected a day?
-
I have a snatch block if you guys need to use it. Also have 125ft of syn winch cable.

Spoke with RBDuffer...he and I have Tuesday open next week.
Please post availability for a recon run/day trip next week guys.

Sorry Justin,
John, Jordan and I were on the road at 7am. I didn't think that you had Tuesdays off :P Sorry for the confusion.
There's still plenty to do and we definitley need your rig and trailer to do it. Weekdays are still best cuz we never saw a soul on the trail on Tuesday ;)
-
Well...8am's more accurate. Then horrendous traffic...so we got to Big Bear/2N02 in about 3 1/2 hours. Off the trail and home by 10pm, long but productive day. Learned a lot about recovery and tensile strength of synthetic winch lines. ;)
Thanks again Randy and Jordan. Pics to follow.

So what did you learn of the tensile strength of synth line? You didn't break one did you?
That one picture looked like you got it within a few feet of the road. True?
Sounds like weekday was great timing for getting what appears to be the heavy lifting done. So what would a time estmate of road blockage be to get it up on the road and load it or drag it to someplace where we could load it without blocking the road any further.
Were there three people on-site? If so, I calculate 45 AAT hours for you guys right?

We learned that if you scrape it against a rock while recovering, it will eventually break late in the day.
Yes, we got it to within 2 feet of the road, and would have moved it more if Duffer's winch line hadn't snapped.
The weekday recovery was perfect...we didn't encounter one vehicle all day...from noon until 7:30 pm. Zero traffic.
Yes, three people, and 45 hours with drive/work time included.
Thanks Terry.

Okay, here's a few photos of yesterdays AAT Xcursion.
Approach shot...look closely and you can see the Oldsmobile in the center of this picture...gives you an idea of how far down the slope it crashed. Always wonder when the original crash took place, and what happened to the driver/passengers...unfortunately probably never know. ???
(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/SCCX%202014%20Adopt%20A%20Trail/DSC_0165.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/SCCX%202014%20Adopt%20A%20Trail/DSC_0165.jpg.html)
Arrival and assessment. The original plan was to simply cut parts off to lighten the load, and make a second trip to winch the carcass up the hill. Things progressed however.
(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/SCCX%202014%20Adopt%20A%20Trail/DSC_0167.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/SCCX%202014%20Adopt%20A%20Trail/DSC_0167.jpg.html)
About 50-60 feet down the slope, a lot closer than we originally thought

Based upon my Google research, and identifying the grille, bumpers, and tail lights, I guesstimated this car to be a 1963 Oldsmobile Super 88 sedan.
Thought for the day...we were recovering a relic almost as old as myself, but still younger than Duffman...here's what it possibly looked before its fateful trip down Burns Canyon Rd./2N02

The first plan was to cut/unbolt pieces off the car...but as we did this, and when we winched the roof off, the whole car moved...and we thought, "Why not??" Keep in mind, we cut the roof off, removed the trunk lid, seat frame, and dug out/threw out several hundred pounds of accumulated rocks/rat droppings/sticks/trash etc. before winching up the hill.

Damn that is really great you guys. What Fantastic work.
Now we need finish this off. Does anybody have access to a flatbed trailer large enough to hold this thing? Or do we need to further dissect this thing to get it off the mountain.
-
where it sits now, which i dont know if John got a picture of, the corner of the rear bumper is at the edge of the road. we could use a flatbed tow truck. it could pull right up, angle the bed down, and winch that sucker up onto it. the last few feet were the hardest, and i think its because of the low angle we were pulling it at. i dont know how we could go about fixing that. we also had issues of the trucks sliding, so maybe tying off to another xterra behind the one winching might have helped.

I have access to flatbed trailers, but I don't see how we can get it on and off w/o tearing the crap out of the deck.

When ever there was heavy lifting or dirty digging to do, John was always there.... with his camera, watching ;)
He said that I would thank him later, and he's right. Thank John for the great photos. We all got plenty tired and dirty. It was a great day doing a good thing on a beautiful day with great guys.
The broken cable on my winch was mostly due to my ignorance of clutch settings. I will have time to study this more while repairing my winch :P
-
Which repair is confusing. I broke mine. Replaced the broken parts. Still doesn't work.

I have been talking to Danny Bogner a full time AAT volunteer up there, and I would like to include the text of his emails. Very interesting with some options:
#1:
Terry if you need to pull/drag it out to the road I'll volunteer my 5 ton military to pull it, but I'm busy all weekend working on other AAT and OHV stuff. It can be pulled to the road and you would be surprised as to how fast it will disappear, scrappers will make it it go away . Feel free to call me if you want to talk about it

Got ya Terry, if you have it out to the pavement I'm sure it will disappear. Been there done that with several vehicles in pieces or burnt and they last a couple days at the most and are picked up by either scrappers or the CHP if they are on public roads. Good luck and good work
Danny
#3: (We are getting some air time)
Yea I talked to Greg this morning at the Discovery Center and he said you sent some pics and that it's the 1 you guys recovered down by 2N70Y but there is another 1 back towards Baldwin that's WAY down the side and several times people have tried to bring it up with no success. If it's still on dirt where they pulled it out it needs to go down hill another mile or 2 on to BLM land to be picked up by scrappers. We should talk about it
Danny
#4:
The big concern is what drops out of the car while being towed so it's important to having rigs following to pick up anything that falls of while being towed including nuts and bolts anything that can puncture a tire. That road is hard enough that it won't be abused probably won't even see any marks.
I'm busy this weekend with 2 different projects tomorrow I will be on the F.S. dozer the SWECO Sunday I have an OHV volunteers patrol and have to cut and remove 3 trees that are blocking 2 different trails, but you free to pull it and I can try to send you a Google Earth location where we have dropped several cars before that disappeared within a week
Danny
#5:
Hi Terry here's the best I can do with a map from Google Maps of where the best place to drop the Olds is, the "A" is about the start of 2N70Y and the "B" is at Viscera Springs road which is an intersection where we have left several cars in the past few year and they disappear in a few days and it's on BLM land. I sent it to myself to see if the link works.

Good luck with it and I might be able to help next weekend but the issue is that if somebody drives by it might end up back down the hill, cause that's what we deal with dealing with the public on their way back to Big Bear from Pioneer Town after a day at Pappy and Harriets after a few adult beverages
So looks like we have some big help it we need it and all we need to do is pull it 2-2.5 miles and it will disappear by magic.
-
That's great news Terry, well done. I free next Tuesday again if anyone is interested. If I don't get my winch fixed by then, I can still be dead weight tied to someone's rear bumper. :'(

My plan is to talk Lava into bring his 1 Ton trailer, I can bring wrenches and a saw. The more winches the better. Separate the engne if we have to and haul everything to the "drop off" spot for the scrappers. Leave Temecula area about 9am to let traffic settle a bit.
????????????????
-
Only two issues Randy: 1) It is imperative that it be dropped off on BLM land and 2) that no debris is dropped on the road along the way. Danny contends that it can be dragged if we get enough horsepower up there to do it.
Hopefully this link will help with the where:

Dragging is worse than dropping parts IMO. If we can cut it into more easily"liftable" pieces, we can cart those to the BLM area for pick up.
Sounds like from Danny's conversation with Terry, if we can get the parts/pieces to the Viscera Springs/2N02 intersection, we would be good.
My .02 - we cut more parts/pieces with Justin, load what we can and drop off for the scrappers.
After the work we did last week, I don't think it's realistic to get the whole car loaded onto a trailer in one piece. Just too heavy.

Yep, way too heavy. I think plug in sawzall with an inverter will do the trick.

Tuesday AAT Meet Up
Okay...looks like the group consists of:
0317/James
Lava/Justin
RBDuffer/Randy
knightrider/Jordan/tentative pending gainful employment
GhostX/John
Tentative plan is for the southern group (Justin, Randy, Jordan, John, James) to meet in Murrieta.
Meet Spot: https://plus.google.com/106689890607802866195/about?gl=us&hl=en (https://plus.google.com/106689890607802866195/about?gl=us&hl=en)
Meet Time: 9am
This should put the group in the Baldwin Lake/2N02 Trailhead vicinity around 11:30am - noon time. :)
All of this is subject to input/change, but thought we should get a meet spot/time down on paper. LMK, and thanks everyone for chipping in! ;D
-
Looks great! I'll be there with 2 helpers. ::)
I think Tom is in the Temec/Murrieta area too.?
-
Sounds good John, way to bring it together. I will leave my whimpy trailer and we can make 2 or 3 short hauls with Justins.
I will bring my 1400 watt generator and some cutting tools. My winch is still a good dead-weight :P
-
I'm Tom... GreenGoon
I think 0317's name is Jason and I'm pretty sure he's in the Temecula area.
Unfortunately I can't go tomorrow after all. I have to work every day this week and I'll be laying down some new laminate floors during the few hours I have off.
I thought tomorrow would be great for my schedule but it didn't work out.
-
Sorry Tom...I got the lifted Gen 1's mixed up.
Okay, sounds good everyone...meet spot and time solidified. See you there!
-
yep im still tentative, interview was so-so but the job starts tomorrow so ill know by tonight, maybe.
-
This looks like it's going to be a great day. Ive got the trailer hooked up and the equipment loaded. Please be sure to bring extra Ratchet straps to tie down the parts we hack off. I'm running short and only have a few left.
I am bringing my usual trail tools, as well as a Honda 1000 Inverter topped of with petrol, my Sawzall, 50ft extension cord, 4 Diablo Metal cutting demo blades, an 18v sawzall, 2 hi cap battery's, the charger, and a Gallon of extra fuel.
Ive got the 12, 000lb winch, a block/pully setup and a tow strap.
If we cant do it with all this, then I'm at a loss. Maybe we can bring some 2x4s or 2x6 to help get the stuff up on the trailer?
-
Ok just heard back from IT, laptop is ready, by bosses said I can turn it in because they have work for me. No free vacation after all.
-
My name is James not Jason. I'm free tomorrow and plan on helping. Coming from Hemet area.
-
Thanks James 0317. We appreciate your help. Eventually we'll get your name right. Don't feel bad, I get called Jason, Jesse, James, Jordan, John, Jacob, and my name is Justin.
Lava is way easier. See you manana. Mr. John GhostX please update listing :)
-
My name is James not Jason. I'm free tomorrow and plan on helping. Coming from Hemet area.
Got it here...and your PM.
Thanks James, I apologize for any confusion with your name.
I blame it on Tom, who I thought was you, when he told me your were Jason...who is really Deadpilot.
Okay, all updated.
See you all tomorrow morning at 9am in Murrieta.
-
No worries John, I figured you mixed us up. It was easy to do considering I was originally planning on helping out on this project tomorrow.
Soon Deadpilot will also be SAS'd so I could see all the confusion ;D
Sorry I got your name wrong James. I remembered is started with a J.
You guys have fun out there. Sorry I have to miss it.
-
Hey you guys have fun. I wish I could get away and be there to help out and see it go away. Please take lots of pictures(Some of us live vicariously through you "retired" guys), because we have some very interested BB folks. I think I will probably have to make a trip up there this weekend and see if anything is left.
-
no worries on the name.
I can bring about 10 - 14 extra rachet straps that lava requested.
Anything else needed?
-
I think we'll be okay with that, but bring whatever you think will help us cut/torch/lift/strap and haul that POS off the trail. We can never have enough stuff on the trail. I'm gonna ice down a cold 6er for a celebration after we finish.

The next challenge presented itself in the form of "How in the heck do you load half a car on a military trailer with no ramps or wheels?"
Answer: brute force...or lifting force...provided by Jordan, James, and Justin. To say the least, it was a "J-Day."

Justin practiced his "backing skills" learned at a recent mountain top clinic. More on that when I get the YT vid loaded.
Meanwhile, at the front half of the car, Randy remained fully committed to the valve adjustment of the Olds...there was quite a discussion as to the weight of 1963 cylinder heads...35 lbs??? :D :D :D

LMAO, you need to hit the gym some more.

Really nice work guys! When are people going up for the other half?
-
Wow what great work you guys. Totally impressive. So what about the other half of the car? Will we need the trailer again to get it down? Winches? Straps? Chains? How much heavier is the front half versus the rear half? I'm assuming the block minus heads is still considerable weight. Can we drag it? Danny Bogner seemed to believe that was possible, but I'm deferring that to you guys that were up there?
The availability of equipment will affect when we can do this again. I believe that others of us need to get up there to help. Hell even if only to haul spare parts for Randy ;D
Sorry that I haven't been engaged with this forum lately but the earthquake epicentered here in La Habra and it's 200+ little buddies has created some significant disruption to my household. But I'm coming back. So I'm really interested in helping finish this project. This a real accomplishment for our organization, people in BB have been talking about this car for probably more than 40 years.
P.S. From you folks that were there I would like to have your total hours invested in this project so that we can get the visibility to the AAT effort.
Again great job you guys.

That's great Randy but most of us are busy on weekdays, so you are loosing a great deal of your manpower.
Another thing is Danny Bogner volunteered his 5 ton truck and thinks he can drag it down the hill. Is that feasible to those of you that worked it? The only thing he was concerned with was stuff falling off in transit. If we gouge it up enough maybe that will just make the FS grade it making the thing even smoother. ;)

I'm pretty good at lifting things.
I'm available all weekend as long as I'm home in time for Game of Thrones Sunday night

IMO - dragging for three plus miles down Burns Canyon doesn't make sense.
Finding a way to load on a trailer - even if that takes a little time/patience/planning at this point seems worth revisiting.

Just asking. I would just like to see us do this with the least possibility for injury. Now engine hoists, could they be used to lift things onto a trailer?

How about a backhoe or something like that? I will check and see if Greg has access to one in BB. That's a great idea.

Terry - agreed, safety first on the final transport. From what we saw left of the front half of the Olds, engine/trans removal from the body would help tremendously, and wasn't too far from reality.
Randy should be able to better explain this, but it seemed one cross member was holding those two items in. Separate those, tilt the body off to remove - which looked like a winch could get them up the final 6 feet...lift on a trailer, transport. Then winch the body up, tilt, and load onto said trailer for transport down.
How does that sound as a loose/unorganized plan? ;D
-
heres my thinking,
cut the body/frame just infront of the firewall, then pull the rear part of the body up the hill, load it up like we did with the back section, dispose.
then drag the engine/trans up and the front clip up, then load both of those onto the trailer. a cherry picker will help with loading the engine onto the trailer.
to me trying to pull the rest of the car up in one piece seems futile, i imagine the trans doing its best to spike itself into the hill while we are dragging the car up the hill, and we cant get a high enough angle to pull it up without the whole thing digging in. the 5 ton would be nice to get it up the hill and onto the trail, but theres no way i would drag it all the way to the drop point.
-
I like John's 'unorganized' plan. But if we can't get get the car away from the motor/tranny then Jordan has a good solution.
Once we get everything on the trail we should be able to separate the motor from the tranny with an impact and socket in minutes. That way we might be able to man handle them on to the trailer, if we don't get a hoist up there.
PS Thanks for the pics of Ziva
-
Im a huge fan of "bring your best ideas", but, lets keep it simple. Go up there, cut it up, muscle it, and load it on the trailer. Too much arm chair quartbacking and we'll never get it done.
On a much funnier note, if you look at Lauren and James' photos, where we are readjusting straps, look next to John's Rig on the ground, just beyond the drivers side door.....
Its small and black and laying in the dirt. Guess what that could be? !
