Ok, this time, I finally have the money to buy a GPS unit. Which one?
-
What do you want to do with it? Driving, hiking, boating, flying or geocaching?
-
I'm selling mine. $100 you pick it up near Riverside, $10 shipped to you insured. I think you'll need to come up with the bottom mounting plate - a standard Garmin replacement item - unless I can find mine ... or tear the top off my dash!

I like my Garmin with bluetooth, voice command, live traffic and free updates. Don't remember the model number. Surprisingly, they have a lot of trail marked off too.
I used to have a 60CSx or something, I keep that as a back up when I go into the middle of no where.
-
Want it for my daily commute in SoCal and hitting the trails.
-
I haven't seen any really good dual purpose ones and I just use my phone for around town nav.
for off road, Lowrance HDS 5M all the way.
-
I have a question, I have google maps on my phone that I can turn on google earth and see my location live on the trail. I'm looking for a portable nav that has the same ability but a better antenna then the phone. Does anyone have any ideas where I could find something like that?
-
Depends on the size/price/capabilities of the unit you are looking for. Most handheld receivers will give you "live" access to where you are on the trail, similar to your smartphone, with much better accuracy. However, a handheld GPS is only as good as it's mapping software. I know some others here on SCCX actually have a laptop mounted in their driver's compartment and use mapping software to track their progress that way.
Also, the Lowrance units that Steven has are great too.
Figure out what your application needs are (portable vs handheld, power needs/battery/12V), budget, space constraints, and poke around some of the forums to see what others use.
I have a handheld DeLorme PN-60 unit that I use for paperless geocaching. From a mapping standpoint it uses uploaded discs from DeLorme Topo maps which are very handy. I use a RAM windshield mount to keep it from bouncing around the front seat.
It is very accurate, sometimes down to +/- 7 feet, although all GPS feature a 30 ft. range of pinpoint accuracy.
It does eat batteries, so I use rechargable AA's and keep a few extra handy just in case.
A day of geocaching, around 8 hours, will leave me with about 25% capacity. There is also a 12V charger kit that plugs into my power outlet in the Xterra.
I have owned both Garmin and DeLorme units. The Garmin was much more user friendly out of the box, but my first unit crashed and burned the firmware and never came back. The DeLorme is a more complicated ramp up to learn, but I really like its durability and quick upload process for paperless geocaching.
Max Powers would also be a good person to hit up about GPS questions as well.

There are a lot of options.
I'm going to be doing some write ups on the lowrance units, the Lowrance updates your location 10x/sec. with the point 1 baja antenna.
the antennas also has a heading sensor in it so it always knows which way you're pointing regardless of you sitting still or even when driving in reverse.
It also has caster & camber sensors in it. this data can be overlayed on the screen.
as far as the sat imagery, I'm coming out with map cards that overlay this data on the unit. I use data from usgs which has a resolution of 1Meter/pixel. (one pixel in the image covers ~3ft on the ground)
I'll have to show you guys mine on a run sometime.
