Title: California Campfire Permits
Post by: Bobby B. on February 02, 2009, 06:11:44 PM
Saw this information on Expedition Portal and wanted to add it here since it's a topic that has come up in the past.

California requires campfire permits, technically even for lanterns and stoves.  Since we live in a state prone to wildfires, expect more awareness to be paid to this and, in light of our state's budgetary woes, I could see various agencies looking to write tickets for this.

The following is a link to obtain a campfire permit online, so you don't have to go to an office or agency to get one.  After taking the world's easiest four-question quiz, you can download the permit form, fill it out and keep in your truck or outdoor gear.  The permits are good through the end of the year.  If we have a bad fire season, expect that this service will go away, so do it now.

Beats possibly paying a fine.

This is actually for all National Forest areas.  There are also permits that you can get for free for BLM land.  For most of the year in southern Cal you can't burn anywhere outside of designated areas in campgrounds and recreation areas because of fire threat.  I know in Riverside County if you are caught with an illegal fire you can and more than likely will be fined.  If you have questions regarding burning you can PM me and I will get you info on whether or not burning is suspended and regulations for state land.  National forest land just hit the ranger stations and someone there can tell you where and if you can burn legally.  Most fire prevention officers won't ticket you for a lantern or grill, unless you are a jerk to them.

Thanks for sharing this info. I never knew a permit was required until reading this. I like to camp in Calico a lot since it allows me to target shoot with my rifles more than 50 yards and it's fun to wheel there if your rig is set up for it.

I followed the link and took the test and it let me print a free permit that is good until the end of the year.

Does anyone know how long the permit will be good for if I retake the test in January?

P.S. I just noticed how old this thread was. Sorry for resurrecting it.

The shelf road at the top of Odessa is the scariest thing I have E V E R been on.
Doran has one scary section too.
I love Calico.
