83k. , it had 79k when i got it. Interesting thing happen, I had it for about a week, and the check engine light came on it lost power. I bought it from a mom and pop dealer but I took it to a nissan dealer, they checked it out and said the radiator fluid is leaking into the trans, the trans will now have to be replaced and also the radiator. However, nissan is aware that this model has this problem and has extended the warranty to 80k or 8 years. Well, I just made it and nissan paid for it all. Since then I drove it to oregon and back and its doing fine. I wonder if anyone else has experienced the trans problem.?

The rad/trans contamination is a relatively common problem with the ATs on the 2nd Gen Frontier and Xterras (maybe even Pathfinders). I'm not sure if this site has a write up on the bypass but check out thenewX.org. If I recall correctly, this issue was fixed for 2011 models and above. Dealers may also be using the new parts for these warranty repairs too so you should confirm what the dealer did with yours.

Welcome from the I.E. This topic is usually found under the "Milkshake of Death" heading in this forum.
-
Unfortunately yes, this is a common malady. My 05' suffered from what many call the SMOD - aka, the Strawberry Milkshake Of Death.
This name was given as a result of the color and texture made when the AT fluid and the engine coolant mix. A frothy pink substance which looks eerily similar to the fast food confection of the same name...although not quite as tasty and much more expensive.
The first thing you need to check on the dealer paperwork is to make sure they installed Matic S AT fluid in your new transmission...NOT the old Matic J fluid.
The Matic J was responsible for the slow internal corrosion and eventual failure of the transmission fluid line that runs inside the radiator of your Xterra. That is why Nissan covers this repair and extended most warranties.
Like the others said, do a quick search over on thenewx.org as well as Xterra Nation to get more info on the radiator bypass, as well as other transmission related DIY maintenance tips.
Good luck...us 05's gotta stick together. ;)

Welcome Howard!
Good timing on the SMOD thing. You should love everything else about your X. I do, I got the Milkshakeless Manual trans :D

Thanks everybody, I'll make sure the better fluid was installed and check out that site. Thanks for all the input

Welcome from Orange.
I too have an '05, unfortunately I wasn't so lucky seeing the SMOD. Mine blew all at once at 155,000 miles and end up costing me $5,800 for new trans and radiator. I found a class action suit for the bad design that is settling and hoping to get at least some of the money back. I still need to install the aux cooler.
192,000 mile and still going strong. :)

192k, that's great, looks like I made a good choice in the xterra

Welcome From ventura county!!

Great choice on the Xterra - these trucks are made for use! Glad Nissan honored the radiator/trans recall and got you fixed up. See ya on the trails!

Welcome from Pasadena.
I jumped on this and swapped out my radiator along with all the trans fluid before I had the problems. Then they decide to extend the warranty. My 06 has 75k on it. I should have let the transmission blow, just to get a new one.
