Does anyone Escondido south have the diagnostic tools to tell me which code I'm throwing? I am assuming its oil or cats nothing feels wrong with it and I started doing all my own maint about 5 thousand miles ago. Yeah it took me 7 years to stop being lazy!

figured I'd repost this here as it took me a while to find it - having just fixed a chewed up timing belt I needed to reset the Service Engine Soon (SES) / Check Engine Lamp (CEL) - fortunately NissanClub's "Dadster" Posted this - it might help a few of you out on here!

It took a few tries to get it to work but after it did I was able to pull the codes and reset the lamp!

This is how you find out why your Service Engine Soon (SES) light is on and how to reset it. No tools required!
In car ECM Diagnostics/ECM Reset procedure:
1) Sit in the driver's seat.
2) Turn the ignition key to the ON position and wait three seconds. (Do not start the car.)
3) Fully depress and release the accelerator pedal five times in less than five seconds.
4) Wait exactly seven seconds. Fully depress the accelerator pedal for ten seconds until the SES light flashes.
5) Release the accelerator pedal and start counting flashes to obtain the four-digit trouble code.
Long flashes (0.6 seconds) indicate the first digit of the code; count the blinks one through nine and write down the first digit. (Ten blinks indicates a zero.)
The next three digits follow in turn in the same fashion except with faster blinks (0.3 second) and a 1.0-second pause between digits.
The ECM code repeats intself until you turn the ignition key to the OFF position, at which point the ECM resets itself to standard get-in-and-drive-the-car mode.
You can look up the trouble codes in the ESM/FSM; there's a bunch of them. In the ESM, refer to page EC-639.
Additionally, if you get four blinks of ten (0000), the ECM is indicating no malfunction.
You can clear the code (and the annoying SES light) by holding down the accelerator pedal for more than 10 seconds while the SES light is blinking. When you release the pedal, the ECM erases the trouble code(s).

A lot of auto-parts places will loan you OBDII readers. I think last time I did it I borrowed from Kragen. They take a copy of your credit card as insurance.

I did what the post above told me to. It did it second try!
You have to start the sequence before the first three beeps end when you turn your key to on.

P0128 NISSAN - Thermostat Function
Possible causes
- Leaking or stuck open thermostat
- Low engine coolant level
- Insufficient warm up time
- Faulty engine coolant temperature sensor
- Engine coolant temperature sensor harness is open or shorted
- Engine coolant temperature sensor circuit poor electrical connection
Tech notes
If cooling system is not leaking and the fluid level is OK, replacing the thermostat usually takes care of the problem.
Help with this
When is the code detected?
The engine coolant temperature does not reach to specified temperature even though the engine has run long enough.
Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

Engine coolant temperature has not risen enough to open the thermostat even though the engine has run long enough. This is due to a leak in the seal or the thermostat open stuck.

It's been years since I have done it. I just researched and you are correct about it being illegal for free. Seems like a work around is charging 1$ or something small like that. I cannot believe that people take the time to come up with laws like this. >:(

I'm up in Running Springs. I have a code reader I bought at Auto Zone for not much. 30-50 I think. Just a basic one. And yes, it's illegal for them to give you one to use cause that makes "all the poor mechanic schools" cry. Auto Zone was actually sued to stop that practice a while back. :/

I already fixed it, put in a new thermostat and reset and everything runs great and the light has yet to come on in 3 days.

Well for everyone's information. I saw in the PepBoy's window a sign that advertises "Free check engine light analysis". Might be the end around if they do it.

Be careful of the home testers. I've been helping a mechanic friend of mine for the last couple of weeks and he's had a few people bring in there cars after they used the home scanner, they completely wiped the error codes after the scan. Their cars still had the same problem but there was no code to help diagnose they issue. Make sure you write down the codes if you plan on taking it to a mechanic for repairs.
