Title: Midland 75-822
Post by: scottmen on March 14, 2013, 01:32:47 PM
I saw another post about this radio and wondered if anyone had actually bought it.

I want something that won't necessarily be installed all the time. Anyone have any experience or advice with it?

I still have one of these.   It's an ok CB.   You still need a mag mount external antenna to get any reception at all.  And my big problem, whenever I has was 4-wheeling, I was forever chasing it around in the cab.

Used in Gremlin's Pro4x. We have a Midland 1001LWX 40 Channel Mobile CB with ANL, RF Gain, PA, and Weather Scan, it fits just right in the center console and we use a Wilson "Little Wil" antenna. It got great reception in Big Bear and (suggest an external speaker) with the cigarette plug adapter (sold separately) you can remove when you done wheeling. We picked it all up at a truck stop for a decent price.

With it sitting at the top center of the vehicle you get good reception and can reach out well. We still hit low trees even with this one but it was never (yet that is ;D) knocked loose.

That is the same radio that ranger Greg was using during our AAT run last month.  I was surprised at how well it worked, but agree with Terry, it can be hard to find in the cab.   :)

Do you think adding a mic would make it a little more manageable?

They do have a number of those to choose from so it will boil down to preference.

Loki,
Do you know the height of the Midland 1001LWX? I was trying to find the spec online and am having no luck.

I am torn between that one and the Uniden PRO520XL(1.4 inches high) now

I can measure it when I get home tonight.

I got this info off the newx- site. The pics they have of the setup should give good reference on how little it is.

just the black box itself and no knobs are included.

2" high x 4 1/2" wide x 6 1/2" deep

Here is what I am going to go with, unless someone advises otherwise.

Uniden PRO520XL 40 Channel CB (It is in stock vs Midland, had great reviews on Amazon)
18' RG-58U Coax
Firestik SS-3H HD Spring
Firestik II 4' Tunable Tip Antenna 900W

Anything good/bad with this set up?

Looks good.   I think you will enjoy this configuration.   Just remember to check your SWR when you get it installed.

Terry,
Is this something that can be done at the trail? I don't have a SWR meter and am not 100% how to tune the antenna?

Sure we adjusted RBDUFFER's SWR on the Mojave Road last year :D

I have this CB in my X. Comes with a screw on antenna and battery pack so you can remove it from the truck and still use it. Mine has worked fine for communication on a run. Run mine with a NGP Firestick setup

I've got this too. It's very handy to keep a charged battery pack around and easily disconnect it and take it out of the car when spotting someone.  My only complaint is the lack of RF gain, which means that I sometimes will not receive transmissions when I'm too close to the source because it will over-power the radio. I have a 4' firestik antenna mounted on the roof. On my Dad's X he has the same antenna mounted on the shrockworks bumper and he has less of a problem with receiving strong transmissions. Out on the trail though, it's not too much of a problem as long as I maintain a few car-lengths from the other trucks it is fine. In terms of overall transmission and reception range though, it is excellent.
