Let's try this again. Hopefully mother nature will take pity on us since we're helping her clean and maintaining her beautiful 2N02.
I've never been to Truck Haven, but it sounds like a heck of a good time. That being said, I don't mind leading this run, as long as I have an experianced tail gunner. John, Terry and Jordan, feel free to jump in here anytime.
LETS DO THIS!!!
CB Channel = 24(for X) ;)
FRS Channel = Channel 4(For April) 24(for X) (Bring em if you got em, but CB comm is preferred.)
For those of us with HAMS in their trucks, may I recommend the ECRA (East County Repeater Associations) 147.240 machine, PL 103.5 on Monument Peak for repeater comms in the desert.
Looks like Borrego Springs has a 440/70cm repeater, I have never tried it. 449.200, with a PL of 114.8
Simplex 146.535 works (cause its in memory on my radio ) but we can pick another if everyone agrees.
Meet at Christmas Circle at 9:00am

Also, there is free air fill up (blue hose on the east side of the building, please re-coil when done) at the gas station just outside of town (western end) so please give them some gas/snack money during your stay. Couldn't locate coordinates/map location, but look for the firewood for sale in wheelbarrows as you enter town from the west and you can't miss it.

Truckhaven Trail
From Dirtopia, The Off-Road Encyclopedia
A large part of this trail runs through private property with about 11 miles still open to hikers and private SUVs.
The loose sand on the terrain gives this trail a moderate difficulty rating except for the intersections with the Arroyo Salado Trail and Calcite Mine Trail which is rated more difficult. Another section in the North Fork Arroyo Salado Wash is rated even higher. Choose these sections only if you are an experienced driver and capable of avoiding serious damage to your vehicle.
Starting at Borrego-Salton Seaway (S22) east of Borrego Springs, the trail moves to the Santa Rosa Mountains. You pass by the Inspiration Point and Fonts Point Wash and can see the Clark Lake along the way.
You drive down for about 2.9 miles on S22 and then turn south towards Arroyo Salado Wash. Campers can use the sites that is near this section.
Inside Arroyo Salado Wash
Once in this zone, you are transported into a new world with the red canyon walls looming over you. After about 2.2 miles you land at a side wash which has a small intersection. You then reach the formed trail taking you out of the wash and leading to a saddle. From then on you start moving down the North Fork Arroyo Salado Wash.
After you move out of this wash you enter the section rated 5 which lasts until you reach Cannonball Canyon. After this it becomes easy again and rejoins S22. At this point you get access to the Calcite Mine Trail.

I would like to go on this since I should have most of the stuff I am planning for now complete.
I dont think I will have sliders then.
I know the rules section say the items that are necessary, but what items do i absolutely have to have for this?
I am still working on Air, HighLift, recovery tools. I should be able to have them by then, but dont know if I will have everything.
-
You'll need sliders for sure. Plus front and rear recovery points.
-
Ok, well then I wont be going on this one then.
I have front rear, just from the front hook, and i have tow shackle.
I dont want to destroy the truck though so I will wait. I have the base offroad skids, but guess ill be waiting for sliders...
She is coming together albeit slowly.

Hey Rich...when you get time post up a build thread in the Display Case section. That way we can check out your progress and see what equipment you might need for future runs.
If you haven't already, install a hard wired CB radio with a Firestik antenna...or a suitable magnetic mount antenna. This is a really good first mod for your Xterra, as well as a fire extinguisher. There is a great How To section here that shows a few members installs that would be quite helpful.
Let me know if you have any questions.

cool video. That looks really fun. maybe some day...in James Disco ;D

So? Any takers??

Phew! It would've been a bit scetchy to run this by myself.

My Wife and I are in, plus my Dog Harley. :)

i should be good to go for this!
white knuckle sliders are still sitting in my garage lol, so i guess it would be a good idea to get em put on!

I went a bit nuts and got 4.57s front and rear on 33" tires. It's gonna rev a bit high on the freeway but not too bad (approx equivalent to disabling overdrive). It should improve rock crawling ability quite a bit though, not to mention feel a lot more torque throughout. I'm in the middle of installing it right now (got the rear diff out and am waiting for Steve from rugged rocks to make me a new spacer for the e-locker (the holes didn't quite match up on the one I got initially). Will have a video of the whole process once I'm done if everything goes well.

Have you set a date for the prerun? It will definitely be a bonding experience with whoever goes with you. Well, maybe not quite the bonding experience Randy had on a recent run.
Nobody knew anybody when we met, and now we are the godfathers of each others children and first born.
:D
-
No, no Pre Run planned. Just saddle up and ride :o
-
I will probably do a prerun sometime to get an update on conditions out there. Rain always changes the desert terrain.
-
Sweet!! Let me know when, I will try to join you.
-
I am down for a pre-run, would like to see what I am getting my wife into before we go!

Talking of pre-run. If anybody is interested, I am thinking about making a run to TDS this Saturday morning. I'm going to meet up with some wheelers that I know. Check TDS out in general and then maybe do some wheeling in the Truck Haven area.
So anybody interested, give me a shout.

You were there Max?? Me too. What a blast. Met up with this guy again that helped me at Superstition Mountain. Seems he winters and wheels in Southern California and he drives this "Nebraska Farm Vehicle" Yes that is what his License plate says. But this farm vehicle is one of the most built up rock crawlers I have ever seen. First of all he built it from the ground up. Cat diesel powered, steering front AND rear axles, he can lengthen or shorten his wheelbase by up to 30", he can raise or lower each corner 12" in either direction, and I think his is running UM 50" tires. And does that climb? WOW.... My X kept saying that's what I want to be when I grow up.
-

No I wasn't there yesterday. I just saw some photos a friend posted. I did see the obstacle course a while back and my X peed a little as we drove up.

I was out tooling around in Truckhaven yesterday (in 2WD no less) and had a blast. Ran the Tectonic Gorge trail east to west geocaching, looking for the Hydrant Hill cache.
This is a killer off road area, just west of the Tierra Del Sol playground and practice area. Lots of room for camping! This run will be a great opportunity to hone your skills in the tight stuff.
Fun, fun, fun!
(that's three fun stars on the fun star scale btw)
-
im surprised i didnt see you out there john, my roommate and i were out there for a little bit, then we headed west towards the s2 and i broke a rear brake line when it got caught on a tree branch. had to limp my truck home through julian to avoid freeway, luckily there was no one on the road after 9pm

Bummer...hard line or the flex line?
If flex line, give my buddy Chris Meisner at Nisstec a call and order up a set of their extended brake lines...tell him I sent ya' and he'll give you the 3 day door to door service from Colorado. ;D
We probably passed each other in an adjacent wash at some point...killer weather out there and not crowded at all.
-
Short hard line on the drivers side. Most likely because I don't have the extended lines so the flex line was unbolted leaving the hardline vulnerable.
Oh well, 3$ part and 3 days downtime cause I'm too lazy to make my own. And I'll be ordering the longer lines so that I can be proper again. Good thing I have motorcycles and nice weather this week :-)
-
Thanks for the tip john, extended lines ordered from nisstec

I was out in Truckhaven geocaching AGAIN yesterday. I can tell you, this is a fun area. If you stay on the main trails, stock/sliders is okay. Wander off into any of the serpentine washes, you will want a locker/lift combo for sure, with at least sliders.
Some awesome views to be had for sure!

Hey Ray,
I would like to join your merry band on April 6th if I may. Sounds like it could be fun ;D. Find the fire hydrant(Ghostx knows the way), the phone booth and the RV Park. The trilogy of Truck Haven.
Is this a day run? No overnighting?
I'm not speaking for Ray, but there are some very nice level dry camping areas out there. So if one were wanting to make a weekend out of it they certainly could.
P.S. My AAT crew of 1 needs some help in BB tomorrow.

Terry, it truly wouldn't be the same without you. Stoked to know you're joining us!
Let's caravan down there together.

Mark, I'm not planning on staying overnight. Getting away from the wife and baby for an entire Saturday is hard enough for me as it is. But like Terry said, there's some great camping spots down there. Hope to see you there.

Just curious where exactly in Truck Haven. On the Anzo (TDS) side or back on the fire hydrant side.
But the real curiosity is how did it happen?
-
I took a wrong turn headed out to the Hydrant Hill geocache. A fortuitous meeting with Matt/Hardrock and his dad Jim re-directed us to visit the area again.
Headed up a tight/twisty spur to a dead end...trying to back out, and just kept getting pushed into a sandstone wall of the canyon we were in. I was able to spot Jim's TJ/Jeep out no problem, but with the longer wheelbased Xterra and no spotter I got up close and personal. I take it in stride for sure...especially after all these years of off roading.
Just glad no one was hurt (see the rattlesnake picutes forthcoming) as this was a very remote day of trail running.
My suggestion for the trails on 4/6 would be to start out by running the Calcite Mine Trail, take some group photos there, and then based upon the capabilities/comfort levels of everyone attending, make a trail plan from there. Possibly visits out to Hydrant Hill...the Phone Booth...or just a good solid run up the Tectonic Gorge trail. Just a few thoughts after spending some time out in the area the last three weeks.
-
Here are a few pics of the last few weekends from Truckhaven...
The infamous Hydrant Hill geocache
(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/Truckhaven%20March%202013/DSC_0001.jpg)
Photo taken from the geocache/fire hydrant. This is looking east, as you have to hike the last 100 yards to the cache. It is a memorial placed by North County Yamaha in honor of the Ocotillo Wells Fire Department. The drive to this cache is a series of tight serpentine trails that can be a real challenge for the longer wheel based Xterras.
In my 30+ years of desert travels, I have only witnessed two rattlesnakes. This is number two...and he was a sneaky little fella. He was curled up cooling off in the shadow of the fire hydrant. We arrived, posed for pictures on the opposite side of the hydrant (several shots with Matt's son Mathias just inches away), and as we walked away to grab the geocache he began his signature rattling/buzzing. We all walked back and took a few photos, realizing just how fortunate we were that he had not struck while we were closer.
Close up.
Before the trip out to Hydrant Hill, Daphne and I had a surprise meeting with Matt, Jim, Mathias, and Grant. We were helping a group of Canadian tourists in a Jeep air down for the trip out to Calcite Mine, when who should drive up? Jim and Matt!! We all trooped out the Calcite Mine trail together, spotting our new Canadian friends over a couple of obstacles, and then taking a few photos at the trail terminus.
After we left the Canadians safely aired down, we left Calcite Mine and headed out to the Hydrant Hill geocache with Jim and Matt in tow. We talked on the ham radios until mine crapped out (????) and had a great time wheeling together. After the rattlesnake excitement and body carnage, we headed back to Matt and Jim's campsite where Matt's son Mathias entertained us with his version of "101 uses for a trash can lid." A couple of cold beverages and some laughs later, Daphne and I departed and left the boys to what was sure to be a great night under the desert moon.
We headed to Carlee's in Borrego Springs for a quick bite to eat, aired up at The Blue Hose, and had a nice casual drive back to San Diego, serenaded by Chris Cornell and the boys from Soundgarden. All in all, a great day in the desert.
-
This will be a good one!! Thanks John

What is the break-in for a rear axle re-gear Dan?
The important part is the first 15-25 miles. This is where most of the lapping and hardening is going on and the heat can get pretty high. So basically it's a few very short trips with plenty of time in between for the oil to cool down. After that, they say take it easy for the first 500 miles, but really as long as you aren't towing anything heavy for extended time it should be ok.
I just got done putting the rear axle back in. I still have the front to do and haven't received all the replacement bolts I needed, so it looks like I'm out for this Sat. I'll see everyone that's going on the Mohave road run in a couple of weeks though.

do you have a trail mapped out? trying to figure out how long this is going to take so i can give the wifey a return timeframe.
Paul...the loose time frame is wrapping things up by 5pm.
Subject to change, but the template was to meet at Christmas Circle at 9...depart by 9:30 (pending any late arrivals, but unbreakables out so this shouldn't be an issue ;)) and head to the Calcite Mine trail head off of highway S22.
We will air everybody down at Christmas Circle, as the Calcite trail head is pretty limited in space.
Probably hit the CM Trail around 10ish.
Run Calcite Mine and get a flavor of everyone's trail aptitude for the day.
This trail should take us right up to lunch, which we can facilitate at the Arroyo Salado trail head. Restrooms there for the ladies and kid-o's.
Maybe noon to 1 o'clock-ish.
From there, possibly exploration of the Tectonic Gorge Trail south of Truckhaven, or if we are feeling very adventurous and capable, maybe track down the elusive fire plug monument.
Wrap up 4 to 5 to ???
This is the basic plan, subject to vehicle/participant capabilities and comfort levels.
A lot of the Truckhaven Hills trails are tight switchbacks, so wheelbase is also a strong consideration.
I know your CC Fronty might be challenged in a few spots.
Please remember all...shade is very limited on these trails. It will be warmer out there this weekend, borderline hot for some of you coasties.
Pack water, a hat, and sunscreen accordingly.
There is gas and food in Borrego Springs.
Gas is open until 9pm.
Free air to air up at The Blue Hose. See GhostX for special SCCX tokens. ;)
Hope this helps everyone a little in their planning.

if i high center, just yank me.
It's not the high center I'm concerned with...it's the fore/aft "scrape-age" in the tight corners Paul. :o

should be a fun day then
-
Paul...the loose time frame is wrapping things up by 5pm.
See GhostX for special SCCX tokens. ;)
Hope this helps everyone a little.
Don't know what we do without John!!
THANK YOU
-
Doesn't hurt that he's spent more time out there in the last 3 weeks than everyone else combined haha.
-
Well guys it didnt work out :-\ sorry I wont be there. Have fun tomorrow!
-
I had a last minute problem and will not be able to join the group. :(
I was really looking forward to it so I am quite upset but hope to join next time.
Sorry

Looks like you had a fun time! And some of you even got nice "badges" to include in your campside story telling of this event for years to come. Great pictures....very artistic! Who says the desert is boring.

I'm glad I made it out without any damage. Though, I did have to throw the truck in reverse in a couple of the tight spots.
-
Thanks for all the great photos guys. And thanks for letting me catch up with you. I got back just in time for Cocktail Hour. We gotta do this at least one more time before it gets too hot.

What cocktail hour? Hey Randy we can do that anytime.. ;D But I'm all for a repeat of this. Chris and I had a fun time of Palm Wash BTW. Once I found the way down, if it hadn't been for all the fun detours that Chris MADE me take, we could have made the run to the highway in probably 20 minutes. It was fun fun fun.

To tight for an X but the fronty made it through?

No, Jordan just thought he had more room than he did.

The pic with Harley and the fire hydrant is priceless for sure.
Thanks everyone for a great Xcursion.
I had a Sunday social commitment so I haven't had a chance to download pics yet. Hopefully tonight.

Did you check for more damage, Jordan?
Bumper? Is it just the skin? or was there any underlying damage?
Does it mean a new fender in your future?
And you are correct, I think my bumper fought the fight and won that battle. Matter of fact my fender didn't even sustain a scratch I'm not sure what caused the dimple.

Clean Frontier = Lots of 'Y' turns :D

the headlight is aimed down a little bit, i think the core support may be bent just a smidge but other than that just a fender. hefty bumper is in my future :D

My sincere apologies to the club for my behavior after our restroom stop. It was a momentary lapse of reason and completely uncalled for.
Other than that, it was another EPIC day of wheelin with the SCCX.
