Title: Installation Help! San Diego Date TBD
Post by: BikersCage on January 05, 2013, 09:50:57 AM
So i just ordered the first item in what will be a long list of things for me to do on the X.

Looking for some interest to help me install these.  My new years resolution was to become more familiar with things i own, and ive always been semi mechanical and just want to make it something that I can actually start to do.

If its bolt on only I have tools, but no jacks/stands.  Someone already offered the Jacks/Stands from Thenewx.org  Looking for some people who have done this before and have the know how.  I have a garage that should suffice and a nice 50 foot driveway with double parking right in front of the garage that is level if we need to use that.

The following is what i ordered.  Please let me know if i need more.  Also what kinds of grease or other items do i need to do these?   I believe i shouldn't need the Camber kit because i own a 2005 OR.  I recently had some suspension work done and they didnt say anything was wrong with my bolts.  Hopefully they didn't just break them or something and not tell me.  I will look at the work order when I get a chance.  Sitting on the duty at work right now.

1    TJM Extended Travel Coilover (Front Coil Options: Heavy_Duty_Coils
Light Racing UCAs: Yes (+ $399.00)
         Coilover Assembly: Please Assemble
1    OME CS061R Dakar Leaf Springs    N- OME CS061R
1    *SALE* U-Bolt Kit    N-X-UBK
1    Solid Steel Axle Degree Shims    N3DS
1    TJM Rear Gold Series Shocks

(will add requested drinks and BBQ essentials later)

Hope to see and meet some fellow x people soon.  Then trails shortly after!

as always, i recommend getting a small jar of brake caliper grease, its just synthetic grease that has a brush on the lid for easy application to all parts during the install to help keep things quiet.  your install should be pretty straight forward since you are having nisstec assemble the front coilovers. no need for spring compressors. i havnt ordered from nisstec but im hoping they include a new UCA bolt for the drivers side as its easiest to cut the existing bolt due to the steering shaft being in the way of the removal of said bolt.  i have a milwalkee minature sawsall that works great at getting in the tight space and is faster than a grinder at cutting the excess off of ubolts.  where in san diego are you located?

I am in the military housing up near kearny mesa high school  Right off linda vista in between the 163.  Single family homes up there.  I will go get the grease before the parts come luckily off road warehouse is 5 min drive away.  I will post on their area in the newx site and call them.

I added a set of helper leafs a 'mini pack' and found that I needed a bottle jack that I didn't have. I had jack stands holding the truck up and used a conventional jack to raise and lower the truck. Those springs are heavy and are meant to not bend. The first bolt went in easy enough but the second one was more fun and that's where the bottle jack would have been nice to have.

Yeah, that's the jack inside the spring pack! A bottle jack would have been better.

I'm Hosting a MOD day at my place in ESCONDIDO this Saturday, January 12th. We currently have a Titan Swap scheduled for install on a frontier and an AAL on an X. If anyone else has stuff they want to do, my garage is open to you. I can accommodate 5 rigs maybe up to 6 at one time. PM me for details and address.

Lava, I would definetly be in on that if I get the stuff this week.  I ordered it on sunday it says usually ships in 24 hours and it goes fedex.  So hopefully have it around thursday/friday

You guys sure are generous.  When I started modding with a lift, steering, AAL, we always tossed $100 and up toward the person doing the work.  It was a deal compared to what a mechanic at a shop would charge.  That way everyone benefited.

I dont believe in doing all the work for someone.  I generally like to guide the owner and help when needed instead of doing all the work myself.  Yes it takes longer, but I think of it as teaching a man (or woman) to fish instead of just feeding them junk food.

Sounds good. Let's get a headcount and MoD list put together, so we make sure we all have the right tools for this epic event.

Lava- Doing a Titan Swap on Frontier and possibly adding rear Shims to his Xterra
HEVAK- Doing Rear AAL install
Bikerscage- Full Lift pending parts
xxSVxx- Rear Bils
RBDuffer and GhostX- Beers and Naps
Knightrider- helping hands
SDKLR- Helping out

Did I miss anyone? Probably, I'm horrible behind a desk. This is great. If everyone helps a little on each rig, we'd all be done very fast!

I will also need to move my classic truck and wife's car to the street so we can open up the third car garage for total space utilization. My Cul-de-sac will be overrun by Nissan. I love it. If the weather holds maybe we can BBQ?

I think if 7-8 of us show up and all put in a little wrench time, we can get everyone's list knocked out and maybe have time for an impromptu run somewhere close....even if its over to Stone Brewery.....

If you can make it PM me for my address for those of you that need it.

Okay, I have a gas grill that sucks. I prefer charcoal now, but haven't grabbed one yet. Maybe everyone can ring their meats n stuff and we/you the "chef" can cook em up in the driveway as we work! Lol

So good news the order should be shipped, possibly 3 days so Friday.

Bad news:  need to find a babysitter wife told me she has work sat.  Also need new UCA bolts as most people cut theirs to make the work drastically easier.

I should have complete answers by Thursday.

I would confirm with nisstec and see if they ship a replacement bolt for the drivers side.  Most people only cut the rear drivers side bolt because the steering shaft makes it a pita to remove.  I do have one UCA bolt floating around since I bought one just in case when I did mine so I have an extra I can bring.

I called them, they do not send a new one as its personal preference.  What other random small items do I need grease? Anti seize for camber kit? Lock tite? Should I even use that on the parts ever?  Some newb questions but I want to be ready and do it right.
Title: Re: Installation Help! San Diego Date TBD
Post by: knightrider on January 08, 2013, 12:39:44 PM
Anti seize for all new bolts and bushings. A can of pb blaster applied generously to all bolts and nuts that will be removed at least once a day for the rest of the week. Locktite blue or medium can be used, NO RED loctite, red is ment to be permanent.  If your UCA have urethane bushings you will need grease and a grease gun if they have zero fittings.  Regular greasing is the only thing that will keep urethane bushings quiet, zerk fittings allow you to add grease without disassembling.  Zerk fittings can be added by drilling and tapping a hole for them, they are cheap but save you a lot of headaches later

Yes, I have to move my classic truck out of the third bay and park it on the street (Thinks to himself.....Insurance write off if stolen....Evil Grin, MOD $$)

I also have a driveway just as wide to accommodate 3 additional vehicles. I live at the end of a cul-de-sac so street parking is at a premium, but parking around the corner is wide open and 1/2 block walk away.

If you have spare jacks, spare tools, spare stands, spare compressors, WEBER / Hibachi Grills, Spare Beer, Spare anything PLEASE Bring it along. If we do have a solid attendance, I want to be able to accommodate everyone, and finish the work as quickly, safely and the best we can, that way we can all convoy over to STONE Brewing Company...Exactly 3.3 Miles from Driveway to Parking lot. ::)

THE LIST:

Lava- Doing a Titan Swap on Frontier and possibly adding rear Shims to his Xterra
HEVAK- Doing Rear AAL Install
Bikerscage- Full Lift pending parts shipment 1-11-13?
xxSVxx- Rear Bils - OUT
RBDuffer & GhostX- Beers and Naps
Knightrider- Helping out
SDKLR- OUT
Toro- Helping out
FrankB - Possibly Stopping By

Up until now, I was not a member of SCCX but Lava was gracious enough to help me with my Titan swap. It was a long day but we managed to finish before my wife started calling local hospitals looking for me (11:30pm). Thanks to GhostX and HEVAK for lending a helping wrench and others whose names I cannot remember...sorry.

Lava: the swap was a success! Thanks for the help man. I could not have done it without you. The alignment wasn't so bad either; however I did take it to Firestone today and they got me straightened out. I plan to use them every other oil change since I went with the lifetime alignment. I also had them flush my brake lines.

It was a pleasure meeting everyone  Hope to see you all again soon. I'd like to make it to Truckhaven but after last night, I may need to save up some brownie points before I can disappear for another full day. We'll see.

Yeah well she hates wheeling. She used to be more supportive (read: she went so she could hang out with me but didn't enjoy it) but that was before we got married. Also, we have a three month old that is still to young for off road riding.
