Let's try this again. Hopefully mother nature will take pity on us since we're helping her clean and maintaining her beautiful 2N02.
I've never been there, but it sounds like a heck of a good time. That being said, I don't leading this run, as long as I have experianced tail gunner. John, Terry and Jordan, feel free to jump in here anytime.
LETS DO THIS!!!
CB Channel = 24(for X) ;)
FRS Channel = Channel 1(For January) 24(for X) (Bring em if you got em, but CB comm is preferred)
Meet at Christmas Circle at 9:00am

Also, there is free air fill up (blue hose on the east side of the building, please re-coil when done) at the gas station just outside of town (western end) so please give them some gas/snack money during your stay. Couldn't locate coordinates/map location, but look for the firewood for sale in wheelbarrows as you enter town from the west and you can't miss it.

Truckhaven Trail
From Dirtopia, The Off-Road Encyclopedia
A large part of this trail runs through private property with about 11 miles still open to hikers and private SUVs.
The loose sand on the terrain gives this trail a moderate difficulty rating except for the intersections with the Arroyo Salado Trail and Calcite Mine Trail which is rated more difficult. Another section in the North Fork Arroyo Salado Wash is rated even higher. Choose these sections only if you are an experienced driver and capable of avoiding serious damage to your vehicle.
Starting at Borrego-Salton Seaway (S22) east of Borrego Springs, the trail moves to the Santa Rosa Mountains. You pass by the Inspiration Point and Fonts Point Wash and can see the Clark Lake along the way.
You drive down for about 2.9 miles on S22 and then turn south towards Arroyo Salado Wash. Campers can use the sites that is near this section.
Inside Arroyo Salado Wash
Once in this zone, you are transported into a new world with the red canyon walls looming over you. After about 2.2 miles you land at a side wash which has a small intersection. You then reach the formed trail taking you out of the wash and leading to a saddle. From then on you start moving down the North Fork Arroyo Salado Wash.
After you move out of this wash you enter the section rated 5 which lasts until you reach Cannonball Canyon. After this it becomes easy again and rejoins S22. At this point you get access to the Calcite Mine Trail.

Great idea Ray...homework pending I am in for this run for sure.
Just want to throw in that Christmas Circle in Borrego Springs makes for an excellent meet spot.

Check out Backcountry Adventures by Peter Massey, South Coast trail #26, on page 372 of the 2002 publication for a more detailed description, routing, map and GPS coordinates. Also, Guide to Southern California Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails by Charles Wells has a nice description, map and routing information. If anyone has a video camera or GoPro, this would be an ideal location for it. "Build it and they will come."

Hope you and your amazing camera skills can join us Marshann

I will not be able to roll with you on the 19th, but trust me you will have fun!!!!
Just remember if you get lost... Head down the washes they all lead to the Salton Sea eventually :D
Plus... Some things to do if you are bored? Find the phone booth, yes a phone booth, on top of a hill in the middle of TruckHaven. Next you might want to visit the "RV park" also in the middle of TruckHaven. I'll tell you these people have a hell of a sense of humor.
Also, for your return. The AM/PM at the intersection of S22 and Highway 86 has the best prices in the area.
-
Me thinks Haven is a bit too much for a stock 4x4 so I'll sit this one out but it looks like an awesome park, it'll surely be a great day!!
-
Ok Ray... I can make the 26th. Put me down this will be fun.
-
Can't make the 26th. Have fun.
-
I won't be able to make this run but I am planning on being in the area for the annual Roughneck Rendezvous IV event the 26th and 27th. There should be plenty of other geocachers and off roaders in the area too.

Thank Ray, count me in! looking forward to see your new bumper in person

This is turning into a party ;D
Can't wait!!

This sounds like a lot of fun. We might be able to make it. Depends on the work and munchkin schedule.

Any idea as to when we will be done if we start at 1000?
-
I have no idea. I've never been there. Terry??

Terry said that we should plan on 6-7 hours to complete Truck Haven with 8-10 rigs.
So, plan on 7-8 hours ;D
I changed the meeting time to 9:00am. I was just being lazy ::)
-
oh man this looks like fun but this is a little concerning:
Me thinks Haven is a bit too much for a stock 4x4 so I'll sit this one out but it looks like an awesome park, it'll surely be a great day!!

thank you!

Truck Haven is definitely considered a Blue Run, with Blue/Black sections. From what I hear, from member's that have been there, it's not for the faint of heart. Please read through the OP.
Suspension, Sliders and Skids are highly recommended!!
-
Ok, so from what I understand, there are a bunch of run offs, that lead down to the Salten Sea. If the trail gets too heavy, and you want to bail, you have the option of using one of the run offs. I wouldn't be surprised if I use one of them myself :o However, once you use a run off, your run is done, because they lead down to the highway.
This information that I've received from members that have been to Truck Haven. Please feel free to add your two cents.
-
And I would be more than happy to bail with you, because we never leave a man behind. Besides, it gives me an out to blame it on the new guy and hide the fact that I'm the one that is really scared! ;)
-
Truckhaven has trails and areas for all levels, and bypasses for some of the harder obstacles.

This is a great area of the desert for sure.
A lot to see from both a wilderness standpoint as well as challenging trails.
The potential for some great post run "bench racing" is high. As always, looking forward to seeing everyone on the trail.

In keeping with knightrider's philosophy of giving the other guy a fishing pole and let him do his own fishing, while I eat all the junk food, I really don't have that much skilz as a photographer. They say it's not the camera, it's the photographer. Don't believe it

Thank you Ray, I plan to join the group. I am new at this since I have gone out only once to the Canvaz II rattlesnake trail in October.
Since then I have been able to get my Xterra in a much better shape for off-road. Changed the shock absorbers, put new springs in the back with an add on leaf, changed the upper control arm as well as the front bumper and added skid plates to the bottom. So you can imagine how excited I am to join you since it looks like Truck Haven is something not to miss. Arnold

Oh Captian my Captian:
OK, I want to say that I'm in, but I'm a little nevous about not having an official trail leader on this run. You know, someone of fearless confidence and insight, someone to keep the troups happy and secure, someone to blame if the weather goes to sh** or the trail is closed or my rig catches fire. Who do I call at 1:am if I'm going to be an hour and half late ??? Ray!, this Xcursion is afoot and it needs, nay, demands, a big toe. I believe that you are that big toe. Lead us oh Captain, and I will follow you through the gates of Truck Haven. ;D
-
I would lead since I'm of the few that have been to the haven but looks like I'm going to be on the opposite coast for work from the 22 to the 27. Sorry guys

Count me in as possible with, what was that, "a spash of probable"? Gotta take care of a few things this week.
Never been to this trail before so will I be ok without skids?
-
Neither have I, but as long as you have sliders, and some good spotting ::) you should be OK.
-
I'm really interested in this run. How tight are the twists and turns and can a SWB CC Frontier w/ med lift (PRG 4wd Advanced), skids, sliders make this run? I know that Dan826 and SD_Frontier are in for this, but they're both now TS'ed and don't know if that's a needed advantage... You guys in the Xterras have far less concern about your rear departure angles, I'd hate to leave my rear bumper back on some trail somewhere...
Go ahead and put me down for this run, I'll post if I decide otherwise....
-
There's only a couple of us that have been to Truck Haven. Your guess, is as good as mine. Let the Dirtopia description and You Tube video be your guide.
Looking forward to meeting you.

So, if half of us show up for this EPIC run, it'll be a big group. If everyone shows up, well, lets just say it might take a while to complete the run.
Since, no one has stepped up to lead us into battle, I'll take the reigns. Like I've said, I've never been to Truck Haven, but I guess that's why they call it an adventure.
Come equipped for a good time. Make sure your insurance is up to date. And don't blame me for anything...
See ya on Saturday.

Shi and I are in for this run. So where is this Christmas Circle meet up????

There are multiple trails in and around Truckhaven. I went through it with my truck when it just had 3" spacer up front and 2" block in the rear.
I'm also not completely in for this run. I really want to go though. I'll see if I can make it work.

I will probably not be able to attend this event. I just back from a weekend of wheeling at Superstition Mountain south of the Salton Sea near El Centro. I am actually very lucky that I got back. During the first run (A VERY bad one a 4+ on the 1-4 scale of these wheelers I was with) I think I met my match while trying to get up this very thin loose BIG rock gully I in one fell swoop broke my drivers side coilover AND did something very bad to my front axle as in no front wheel drive even though the drive shaft was turning. Well the recovery crew (Thank god for them) with this event spent nearly three hours getting me out of my predicament and back to camp. One of the recovery personnel said ah no problem and welded the shaft of my coilover (Which I'm being told you can't do) and we spent about the 5-6 hours last night figureing how a coilover is put together :P, welding, grinding, reassembling the coil over back together and installing it back in my X 3 inch droop and all.
So today a drove and drove 200 miles starting out at about 20 miles per hour waiting for the coilover to break again or my front axle to seize up because of all the spare parts now swimming around in my diff.
So if anybody asks of my weekend there it is. Now the repairs begin.
-
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaym!!
-
Sorry to hear that Terry.
-
Oh man that sucks. Sorry Terry. :/
-
BUMMER!!! Get well soon Terry
-
Now the repairs begin.
Usually people would say now you can build a bigger and better rig. But you've already done that. I hope the repairs go well.
-
I am sorry to hear that Terry..
What brand of coilovers were they....if you don't mind my asking?!
-
They are Radflos
-
Wow that sucks, sorry to hear.
As far as welding a drive shaft to a coil over?! That crazy. They are two separate components that do different jobs. Sounds like you may have been hoppping the front end up and down (hence braking the coilover) and when you made contact with mother earth, your driveline was still spinning and one end, probably on the differential side was stripped out of the toothed gear ring inside the Diff. Or inside one of the CV joints, since those are also geared and held in by snap rings.
If the diff isnst the issue and its just a CV joint, then you're good to go, since new CVs and axles are not to much, but you are Titan Swapped so the cost could be a bit higher. Let me know if you need any help and I'll make some movements in my schedule to come help.
(Do me a favor and punch that welder in the forehead for me! Weld a coilover to Drive Axle, haha Lol)

The book California Trails shows Truckhaven Trail (SC#26)W to be NE of Borrego Spriogs but N of Ocotillo Wells and directly E of the Salton Sea along the main S22 road. It also crosses three other trails, SC#27, SC#28. and SC#29. Expect to do around 11.5 trail miles and a difficulty rating of 5 (a detour around the washout is rated a 7 in reverse, an 8 going forward and is the only way around). There is a possibility of damaging the sides of your vehicles if you slip sideways on the loose surface. Its a short pinch that is very steep.
That damage you got really sucks. I have a shop accoumt set up with Fontana Nissan parts dept. and if you want to save big on replacement parts, let me know. I might be able to help.
-
Looking at Backcountry Adventures Southern California, it looks like you can avoid the 8 rated section by jumping down south to the Arroyo Salado Trail SC#28 if you find the recent rains make it such that you want to avoid the tougher section. If you are starting at S22 near Inspiration Point Wash, you will have already done most of Truckhaven Trail SC#26 by then. Here is what makes me think you can choose the alternate trail (head right instead of left). Keep in mind, the book I have was published in 2002.
"Turn left up unmarked Truckhaven Trail #26 and zero trip meter. South Coast #28 Arroyo Salado Trail is on the right. Intersection is easy to miss in this direction."
Here's what the trail guide says if you continue north on Truckhaven Trail SC#26,
"The official road is washed out and impassable; there is a difficult loose, alternate route immediately upstream before the main trail junction. It is very difficult in this direction because of the loose surface. Care is needed on this ascent at a tight twist on top of the short rise."
I think that is the section shown in the video. I certainly don't mean to discourage anyone, but just thought I would offer a possible alternate route if needed. Here is a map of the area.

I don't think he meant the driveshaft. I think he's just talking about welding a broken piston shaft back together.

Justin We welded the shaft of the coilover(No inference to the driveline). The shaft of the shock was literally broken just above the lower shock mount and this guy welded the shaft and we re-assembled the coilover. I'm hoping it is the axle/cv joint I crawled under the rig this afternoon and could literally wiggle the entire axle/cv joint on the passenger side. So I hope that means that I am in the market for a complete axle for the passenger side for a non-titan swapped R180. If anybody out there might have one.

Ahhhh. That makes sense. When I read this stuff at 3am I'm in another planet.
Well, it sounds like those guys you wheel with are saviors in making the toughest impossible recovery jobs, painless and expedient.
It's always good to stop and help someone out on the trail...even if they drive a Tacoma and smoke to much weed. ::)

I will map out a run that will be enjoyable for everyone. No one wants to stress out on, what is supposed to be, an enjoyable day of wheeling.

If I recall correctly, ultrapc40 and I went through Truckhaven trail with a TDS guy and got to the fireplug and the phone booth. And i was in my 05 Frontier with only 33s and barely a 3" front lift. There was also a stock 1st gen X with us. And we all made it with no problems.

HELL YES. Pardon my french.

Well I'm officially out. Wife needs to go to a baby shower and I need to babysit. I'm sad to miss this but I'm hoping there is another run in Feb.
-
Is anyone camping? Mark and Nia want to do the run but after wheeling all day it's a hassle to drive home. So if nobodys camping we will pass. If anyone's camping were probably in...
-
I'm still in rain or shine, although the rain is pretty remote possibility at this point.
-
This run is hard enough when the conditions are dry.
For the good of everyone involved, this run will depend on the weather. If it rains, the run will be rescheduled. :'(
I DO NOT want to put anyone into harms way.
This is a social club, far be it from me to tell anyone what to do, so please be understanding. If it rains, and you're still planning on running Truckhaven, please be careful.

Awwwww man! I'm still in unless it gets cancelled.

Hmmm, now it's up to 40% chance of rain on Friday. http://www.findlocalweather.com/pinpoint/us/ca/truckhaven+trail/current572145.html
I guess 40% chance of rain means 60% chance of no rain?

Guys and gals....after doing some research, I agree with RockinX.
A 10% chance of rain for Borrego Springs isn't likely any rain will fall in the Truckhaven area. I went out and ran Sandstone Canyon when it was storming in San Diego/snowing in Julian. Outside of a few clouds and some chilly wind, the desert was beautiful.
Also, if you go out and it does sprinkle...run something else! Head south through Arroyo Salado to the Pumpkin Patch and check that out...or head down to Ocotillo Wells and cruise some of the trails there. Explore!
This is the weather of the desert season...the worst day in the desert is better than the best day behind the desk!!

Well said John. Here here! I've only been to that area once and it was brief so anywhere is fine for me. Just need a meeting spot.
-
Yeah, it's also not like a torrential downpour is predicted. There is SOME probability of VERY LIGHT rain.

THIS WILL BE RESCHEDULED DUE TO WEATHER :'(
With an 80% chance of measurable rain on Friday night, and a 70% chance of rain on Saturday, it would not be a good idea to run a trail that is hard enough to do when it's dry.
Let's work together to agree on a future date to reschedule this run
-
I would'nt have been able to make it anyways. My boys and I have caught that pesky flu last night. What if we move it to next week Feb. 2nd or the 9th Savrdays?
-
Wouldn't be able to make it next week. The 9th would work though.

+1

Yeah, with a 60% chance of rain now in Borrego Springs, better to look at Sunday or another date.
Rain in the desert is cool...but Truckhaven could be dicey.

I hate it when a plan falls apart >:(

^^^^THAT^^^^

Thank you for looking outfor us. Even though I hate when plans fall apart a dose of common sense is important so we can really enjoy the day.
Just let me know the new date

We are still going out tomorrow!! Lets get muddy ;D

Edit: Going to Trabuco Canyon & Holy Jim trail though, not Truckhaven.
