If you're in Fallbrook it's not all that far of a drive over to Anza Borrego. There are some very scenic trails that you can do in 2WD, and I've done all of them alone in the past too, if you can't find anyone to go with you. It's real obvious when you look at a map as to how to get there - just head north on I-15 to CA-79 South (it says Indio, but doesn't actually go anywhere near there) and then turn right left (the only way you can turn) on to S-2 (San Felipe Road). From there you have options depending on where exactly you want to go. Get a good guidebook - there are lots of things to see around here.

Blair Valley - I've been here many times, and have never needed or used 4WD. We did this as a 2WD-friendly club run last year in fact. There are some great hiking trails too.

Buttes Pass Road - if you stay on the hard-packed ridgeline route (Borrego Mountain Road on your map) to the top of the Drop-Off you should be fine. Certainly no problem to the parking area for the upper entrance to the Slot hiking trail, after that there are a couple of steep spots that could be problematic. I've seen passenger sedans at the Slot parking area. You might be able to also get all the way to Hawk Canyon, but there is a lot of soft sand along the way right now. I've seen VW sedans on Buttes Pass Road all the way out to San Felipe Wash. If you like moving fast through sandy washes, San Felipe Wash is an option too. You might want to have someone else along for that, or be good at self-extraction in sand just in case. Much of it is pretty hard packed right now though.

Check with the State Park rangers or there is a regularly updated chart just inside the door at the State Park Visitor Center that lists the trail conditions and what they recommend as far as 2WD vs 4WD.

[Edited to fix part of the directions.]

I'm down to wheel anytime from the 26th to the 29th. We can meet at Ortega Hwy and run up to Santiago Peak.

I know a secret back way to Ortega Hwy from Fallbrook ::)
And there's a forest road to Idlewild I've been wanting to check out as well.
All 2wd doable.  We will make something happen for sure.

Either one of these sounds like fun. I would like to go play in the forest area. The desert area is kinda normal for me being out in Yuma lol

put me down as tenative for this....I'm hoping my Bils will be back on by the 29th and if it's 2wd friendly I won't have to sweat the sketchy Bils setup...

We'll see...

2wd friendly doesn't mean there isn't air to be caught :)  I guess you could always drive off the side of a mountain like the taco.

but if you got the new snap ring and didnt damage the groove with the new perch, you should be good with those bilsteins until you order some big boy suspenders.

New to the forums. If there is a stock 4x4 friendly run the 29th within 3-4 hours of Los Angeles, count me in! Got an '09 certified pre-owned a few months ago, and he has run well in California City and south of Joshua Tree - definitely down for more ventures.

Holy Crap!!!! WE HAVE TO GO THERE!!!!

Agreed...pretty cool area with alot to offer in trail variety.

Just south of these trails is where Tierra Del Sol 4x4 Club hosts the annual TDS Safari each March.  There is an obstacle park year round, as well as great camping areas.

Calcite Mine trail is near here as well, not to mention the fantastic network available in Ocotillo Wells SVRA.  Frank B. is the Anza Borrego SCCX expert when it comes to this area for sure.

Malls are 2wd friendly :-D

I've heard a lot of the tougher sections through truckhaven have easier bypasses much like cleghorn.  With the recent rains the trails will be a bit more challenging but nothing I don't think a little skinny pedal can't get you through

Well I haven't been there personally so I can't say for sure its 2wd friendly, just what I've read.  Recent rains might make the easy trails a little more difficult due to erosion and runoff.

Due to our op looking for a 2wd run fallbrook might be the better choice.

. . . .  Maybe Frank B can offer some suggestions.  Hint, Hint ???  . . . .

I thought I did that in about the second post in this thread.  Anyway, let's try again.

I've never been to Truckhaven, so can't help with that. I've never done the Calcite Mine Trail, but from what I understand it can change a lot from season to season.  As I mentioned in my earlier post in this thread, call the State Park Rangers and ask about any particular trails. They also have a board just inside the door of the Visitor Center that they update regularly.  If you don't have a paper map of the area, get one.  See the Xcursion Guidelines thread for suggestions for maps and guidebooks.

The 2WD-friendly routes I mentioned in my earlier post were more the kinds of places where the OP could go by himself if no one else wanted to go. That is not to say they would not be fun for a group though.  If you're going to have some 4WD trucks along for the ride, and don't mind taking a chance on getting stuck, there are a few more options that I can think of.

Fish Creek and Sandstone Canyon (at least to the first rockfall bypass): I know of several 2WD's that have done this all the way out and back with no problems. This 13.5 mile each way drive is considered one of the most scenic in Anza Borrego.  The Park rangers suggest 4WD for the portion from the Wind Caves parking area on, and if you're not careful or don't know how to drive in sand you could have a problem, but then you'll have your shovel, or better yet friends with tow straps.  Don't miss the hike to the Wind Caves at about the 4 mile point from the trail start at the mouth of Fish Creek (at the end of Split Mountain Road).  Also, unless you want to spend some time on a strap, and have friends with patience, you might want to avoid Loop Wash. That said, I did follow a Honda Element (probably the AWD version) through Loop Wash once (and didn't see any pieces left behind), and we had a 2WD drive with us the last time we did that as a club run. He did smack the front end pretty hard on a few rocks in order to get over them though.

Rockhouse Canyon / Clark Dry Lake:  There is a 10-mile or so each way road that runs up the side of the dry lakebed, by the old WW2 Navy bombing target and emergency airstrip, and heads up toward Rockhouse Canyon past the quarry. You can find it on a map at the point a little before S-22 turns straight south right near where it intersects Henderson Canyon. Do not drive onto the dry lake bed, stay on the trail.  It's scenic up there.  This is an out and back the same way drive, you'll know when to turn around (or you'll get stuck in some rocks if you don't pay attention to the change in trail conditions in time).

Fonts Point:  Again, the rangers recommend 4WD but I see all sorts of vehicles at the parking area for the view point. One ranger told me it was the most popular spot in the Park to get stuck in the sand. The amount of sand varies from season to season, I've not been there since Spring, when it was pretty hard packed. If what I saw last weekend in Inspiration Wash was any indication, it might be a lot softer now. Still, if one does not drive like an idiot, and maybe have a 4WD friend along, it should be fine.

Military Wash (and probably Fault Wash) going north from San Felipe Wash at the edge of the Ocotillo Wells OHV area would be okay probably in 2WD. Every time I've traveled Military Wash it's been pretty hard packed, no problem at all in 2WD.  There are also a bunch of the wider dirt roads in the OHV that should be fine, and I've seen lots of what look like 2WD trucks out in San Felipe Wash in the State Park side going all the way west to Borrego Springs Road I would think.

Hope this helps, this is what I can think of right now. Feel free to ask anything specific any time.

I open to anything honestly. I know may be only 2wd (for now) but I'm not a stock 2wd and can do some things the 4wd guys can do. I was just asking for the fallbrook cause I just have to watch how much I spend on gas this trip. I was just trying to see if anyone was planning a run in the local area. But thanks for all the ideas on the trails in the area. That will help when I move back out here.

Tipsy, off-camber, steep, switchback trails. :o  As with Cleghorn, a pre-run would be a good idea to scope out the bypasses for the 2wd rigs.  Once committed to a trail, especially some of those shown in the video, backing up a group of rigs once  a situation arises could be interesting.  Strapping or winching a vehicle that gets stuck in a gully or in a soft spot on a curve could be just as interesting.

Count me fo shizzle!!!

It seems to me that we used to have a member here named Fo Shizzle. It was a while back, not sure whatever happened to him.

As for getting out and doing something - there is no reason anyone who wants to go out has to wait.  I've done all of those trails I mentioned in my earlier posts either by myself or with a friend or two, as well as with bigger groups.  Sometimes it's fun just to call a friend (if you don't want to go alone) and take off. Or decide on a trail (guidebooks can be helpful here) and put up a post with a date and time. If you're talking easy trails it does not have to be all that complicated - just go.  Something to think about anyway.

Truckhaven Trail
From Dirtopia, The Off-Road Encyclopedia

A large part of this trail runs through private property with about 11 miles still open to hikers and private SUVs.

The loose sand on the terrain gives this trail a moderate difficulty rating except for the intersections with the Arroyo Salado Trail and Calcite Mine Trail which is rated more difficult. Another section in the North Fork Arroyo Salado Wash is rated even higher. Choose these sections only if you are an experienced driver and capable of avoiding serious damage to your vehicle.

Starting at Borrego-Salton Seaway (S22) east of Borrego Springs, the trail moves to the Santa Rosa Mountains. You pass by the Inspiration Point and Fonts Point Wash and can see the Clark Lake along the way.

You drive down for about 2.9 miles on S22 and then turn south towards Arroyo Salado Wash. Campers can use the sites that is near this section.

Inside Arroyo Salado Wash
Once in this zone, you are transported into a new world with the red canyon walls looming over you. After about 2.2 miles you land at a side wash which has a small intersection. You then reach the formed trail taking you out of the wash and leading to a saddle. From then on you start moving down the North Fork Arroyo Salado Wash.

After you move out of this wash you enter the section rated 5 which lasts until you reach Cannonball Canyon. After this it becomes easy again and rejoins S22. At this point you get access to the Calcite Mine Trail.

Plan B Alert:
I checked with the local Forest Dept.  Everything north of Ortega Hwy is locked now because of recent rains.  Sounds like only a 20% chance of opening before Sat.  I will call Friday to confirm.
I'm going to check out a fire road S/W of Idyllwild.  It  starts on Hwy 371 and Bautista ,over Rouse T/T to the 74, then Bee Cyn. to San Jacinto T/T to Idyllwild.
But, I am open for anything the group decides.

Ah heck, I prepared a post for the upcoming trip that most likely will be rerouted because of the closure of the area around Ortega Cyn., but thought I would post it anyways so that my efforts would not go to waste.  Please delete, move or otherwise put this in a more appropriate thread ....except Max Power's Place of course.   ;D

I'd like to hit the OHV park, on the way from Fallbrook, before we hit Ortega Hwy. Whoever wants to caravan down to Fallbrook, let me know. We'll figure out a meeting spot.

Wildomar OHV park?  There are a lot of trails there with Bloody Jersey Trail being the most difficult.  Somehow I once ended up doing that trail with four other people in my truck, including kids, at the suggestion of the Wildomar volunteer coordinator CJ Stewart (in yellow).  It wasn't too bad because the trail was so narrow that I couldn't see the sheer dropoffs on the sides and I was too new to offroading to know to be concerned. :D  Once you get to the other side, there is a really cool place with a stream and a tire hung from a tree to swing on.

If you do get to play around at Wildomar and get turned around on the trails, just head up to a high point and look down to find the campground and navigate from there.  Here is looking back up on the climb we had just done and a sample of one of the easier trails.

They have an interesting video on youtube of a jeep roll over on Bloody Jersey Trail and here is a link to SCCX

I'm open to whatever I'm not picky lol. So which ever place is gonna we are gonna be able to play in with all this rain. The Wildomar OHV park idea doesn't sound all that bad and looks like it could be fun.

Bee Canyon west of Idyllwild is a cool day trip trail, and is definitely 2WD friendly.

So does rain mean no go for these areas? Sorry for the question but I'm not use to the way it works out here since AZ doesn't have rain very often and it just makes it for alittle more fun.

[/color]

Update: We pre-ran the San Jacinto trail in 2WD.  Looks great!  Desert to pines to packed snow (no chains required).  By the looks of the trail tracks it looks like they don't close for rain.
If you're up for it, we can meet in Temecula at the Shell station and Del Taco on the S/E corner of 79 and Margarita at 9:am

So it looks like meet spot is set in Temecula, Shell gas station off of Hwy 15/Hwy 79 exit.

Then run out the 79 to the Aguanga turn off, to Hwy 371.

Hwy 371 to Bautista road, to the Rouse Hill Truck Trail, over the hills to the 74.  Quick right/east turn up to the Bee Canyon Trail.

Bee Canyon Trail up to Idyllwild.

These are all very capable 2WD/4WD trails from what I have read on the net.  Even a few geocaches out there, so load those caches and happy hunting!!!

The shell is on the left side of the freeway if your going north. It has a huge US flag flying at all times can't miss it.

I remember that section of the trail as we were coming down.  By then it had turned into thick, slick, nasty mud.  I would start out on the high side of a curve but my rear would totally slide toward the mountain with the weight of the tire carrier on the back adding to the pull.  The first time that happened, it caught me off guard and, although I steered into the slide, I came to a stop with my rear just inches from the mountain.  So I powered out of it still steering into the slide which fishtailed me around and got me back on track.  Each time I got to an inclined curve, I would whip my steering wheel to the left to stop the slide, right to get up back up on the high side, and then do it nonstop all over again.  When the road straightened out some, I saw the rear of Randy

OK, OK, when I said "pics to follow" apparently I ment all the great pictures you've seen here from everyone else.  Just when I thought I had PhotoBucket figured out, they 'improved' it.  My photos don't look nearly as good anyway, so by the time I get a handle on the new PhotoBucket (bad pun intended) nobody will care, least of all me.
I really appreciate all the kind words from the gang, concidering that I led them into an icy dead end.  But as GhostX says: since I didn't post any photos maybe it didn't happen ;D

The original picture size is pretty large, so you may want to view them in L or XL and then download/save them from there.  Feel free to save any pictures you want.  I will eventually go back and get the number of pictures down to a more manageable size.  I just wanted to give anybody the opportunity to decide which photos they want.

If you have any trouble downloading the pictures or want any pictures removed (for a nominal fee), please let me know.  Slideshow, fast helps get through the pictures quickly.

BTW, notice the guys wearing just t-shirts in the snow.  Only in California! 8)

After spending $8.00 in quarters at the car wash, going through a bucket of SP80 and Back to Black, a little Scratch X, some Maguiar's Speed Detailer and an entire day cleaning the mud out of my truck this weekend, I thought I would put an end post to this run that we did less than two weeks ago.  If you decide to take Bee Canyon up to Idyllwild and go through Hemet to get there, you may be surprised at some of the sights and landmarks you will find to explore on the way.

It was raining pretty good when I left home, but the rain eventually started to clear up although the skies were still dark.  As I looked south and saw the same ominous clouds, I thought of the crew that was making their way up from Fallbrook.

By the time I got to Hemet the skies had cleared up and it was downright warm.  I saw the mountain in the distance and knew I was getting close.  When I got close to the mountain, I saw a lot of trails carved into it that would have been fun to explore.

I had some time before meeting up with everyone so I decided to stop in to check out this place. But it was another 15 minutes before they opened so I decided not to wait around.

Looks like a fun trip!
Anyone kept the GPS track and can share please?

Backcountry Adventures Southern California book lists the waypoints for the portions of Bee Canyon to Idyllwild.  There may be a connecting trail in the book that extends down to the San Diego area that lists those GPS tracks as well.
