This is GREAT news.
Congrats my friend...stoked for you.
Kenwood...ICOM...Yeasu...Comet...Diamond...are your new friends.
-
thanks to you both. John I credit you with posting about the San Diego class. It's what forced me to study.
The instructors mentioned a radio they liked. I think it was;
Yaesu FT-60R DualBand Handheld 5W VHF/UHF Amateur Radio Transceiver - Dual Band by Yaesu. $199 on amazon.

You are very welcome my friend...my diabolic plan of providing crystal clear comms for the club is working! ;)
BTW - That is a great handheld first radio.
Good luck with the radio search and I look forward to our first QSO.

Well done Max! We can talk TO you on the 2 meter band now, instead of ABOUT you on it ;D
Let us know when you get your call-sign Mavrick.

There was a couple in their 20's taking Tech and the General. I think they said they were getting them for use on their boat or something like that. Sound like them? In my introduction I told everyone I was there for off roading but my original statement was going to be that I was worried about the Zombie Apocalypse.

We had to cancel last minute....Home buying these days, you need to be quick or by the time you schedule to see a home, its already sold to an investment firm...>:(
I spoke with John and we've reschedule for a class Jan 26th...We'll see if I can hit this up.
How painful was the class. I'm bummed knowing we missed you... My wife would have killed me though had she heard you mention zombies ;D

How painful was the class.
It wasn't painful at all. I barely studied before which is to say I read over the 394 questions once over the two days before. I almost didn't go but gave it a shot.
During the class we went over each test question and the instructors answered all of our follow up questions. They gave constant reminders of how to take the test like "That's the longest answer so it's probably the correct one". Or associated words in the question with words in the correct answer. Both of those helped me on the exam.
Well the only painful part of the test prep was other students asking questions that had nothing to do with the exam prep. The instructors are passionate about Ham so they answered them and we got a little behind in the morning. This caused us to race through the second half of the day. I was worried we wouldn't finish on time but trusted in the system and we did. Hey I passed so it was worth it.
The instructors are volunteers. In fact they are not sponsored by any club or organization. Just three guys that want to help people pass the exam and they do a good job at it. I'm thankful for their help.
If I had to do it over again I would have started my studies earlier and really focused on the practice tests at so many free websites. Then I'd take the class and get some of my questions answered.
Good luck......you should be fine. The class has an 85% pass rate.

Posted in your build thread my friend. You would make a great Ham...said the pot to the kettle. :)
Max - thanks for posting the "blow by blow" description of the VE (Volunteer Examiner) session. So much mystery surrounding amateur radio, and what you quickly realize is, it's just a bunch of cool people like us wanting to grow their hobby. They WANT you to pass!! :D
Everyone thinks its so difficult...and I guess that's the secret...it's just not! I mean hey, I did it back in the "dark ages" (1992) and used cassette tapes (Gordon West) and a Walkman to study, before online sample tests were available.
Really glad to see the enthusiasm in the club for amateur radio, it is a lot of fun!
But be careful, you might actually learn something. ;)

Congrats and welcome to the world of radio! Now to turn the roof of your vehicle into an antenna farm! :P
