Post by: Ghost65 on December 05, 2012, 07:22:19 AM
Okay folks, working on getting involved in the Adopt A Trail Program up in Big Bear, for the San Bernardino National Forest area.

They held a meeting on November 28th, 2012 that we couldn't rally at the last minute to attend, but the notes were forwarded to me for posting;

We are currently looking at adopting Trail 2N02/Burns Canyon, which would provide access for all of our members to conduct volunteer trail maintenance.  This trail was chosen as all of us (2WD and 4WD mild to wild) can access, and as volunteerism hinges on "the more the  merrier" concept this was a good choice.

This is the popular Forestry Service Trail that provides access to Pioneer town from the west, Big Bear/Baldwin Lake area from the east, and at Viscera Springs access to the Rattlesnake Canyon Trailhead.

A great opportunity for SCCX to give back to and establish some credibility in the off road community!

We are still waiting to hear back on official confirmation of this trail, so please stay tuned!

PLEASE POST IN THIS THREAD and I will add you to the interest list.

Talking up to 2N02. I'm off that Friday (12/14) and wouldn't mind taking the fam up to BigBear. Might as well check out the trail.

Gotcha...I have to work but feel free Danny, it is the trail we used to get to Baldwin Lake/Big Bear after you exit the Rattlesnake Canyon Trail.  If you get a chance, go to the eastern end and check out Pioneer Town, a cool place for kids.

It was used in the 40's/50's/60's for the filming of western movies/television shows and is a great place for kids to check out.

Okay, I heard back from Ted Kalil, Adopt A Trail Program Coordinator this morning.

Here is the latest update:

Good morning, John

The meeting place is the Corona Sizzler; dinner at 6 pm; the meeting starts at 7 pm and lasts two hours.

Next: Now knowing what you're looking for, Greg will have to confirm what trail you'll adopt. Have you signed the Volunteer Agreement? That's the next step. If you haven't, let me know and I"ll send you the form. It's also available on the AAT Yahoo Group under files. When done, send to Greg.

Then Greg or I will accompany your group on that trail to do a Trail Maintenance Plan. This shows in detail exactly what work is needed and by agreement when that work is to be completed. Some of the work may well be done on that run.

After that, you can schedule your following AAT runs when you like providing you do at least two per year under the present guidelines. So you'll know, we're contemplating changing that to a minimum of 100 hours work on your trail each year. Hours include commuting time now, so this isn't a really hard goal to achieve: six people with 9 hours per day, times two days does the job.

I hope this gives you the info you wanted; if not let me know. We'll look forward to getting together with you.

Ted

I am working on getting a copy of the volunteer agreement, and when I do will fill it out and post its contents here as well.

Then the next step is picking a weekend day to head up with Ted and Greg to check out 2N02 and perform our first round of maintenance.  The hours would be pretty easy to achieve with a group the size of who has already volunteered from the club.

Just want to say this is great, and I can't thank enough the members that have volunteered to participate already.

A great way for SCCX to give back to a trail that we use at least twice a year!

Okay folks, we have secured trail 2N02 for SCCX.

 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

I am working on dates to see when we can develop a trail maintenance plan with Greg Hoffman in the next few weeks.  We have 10 miles of trail, from Baldwin Lake to Vaughan Springs, which is the NFS boundary.

Looks like we have tentatively adopted SBNF Trail 2N02!

This is great news!

I spoke with both Greg Hoffman and Ted Kalil, who are the coordinators for the AAT Program, and the three of us are working on a date when a group of SCCX members can meet with them on the trail for a tour to set up the maintenance plan for 2013.

Please stay tuned!

What he said. ^^  Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do for the club John.  It means more than you would know to a lot of the members, including me.  Although each member contributes in their own way, you have stepped up and paved the way to get the club going in a very positive direction.  You are very much appreciated!

Sorry. This is my busy season at work, all. I will be buried through the first week of Jan. I barely have time to breathe let alone pop in on line.

I'm thinking this will probably pick up again after Christmas/New Year's with everyone being busy with family/travel time.

I haven't heard back from Greg or Ted with a definitive weekend meet anyhow, so no rush/worries.

Targeting Jan/Feb 2013 to work with him to develop a trail maintenance plan for 2N02 and then pick a date to meet with the club up on the trail.

I heard from Greg Hoffman;

Hello John, I'm on annual leave until January 9th.  Just got back from a very interesting, fun 4x4 weekend in Death Valley (I'm in a club too!).

Attached please find a blank copy of the road maintenance plan.

I check e-mails in the morning at home.  Feel free to communicate if you wish.

Happy Holidays!!

Ranger Greg.

I now have the trail maintenance plans in hand, which are essentially designating which club members will be participating as well as the assigned work with completion dates.

This should all kick off in the New Year, so future updates should take place the second week of January, 2013.

Thank you everyone for your input and offer to help!

Alright trail maintenance peeps...I sent an email this morning to Ranger Greg Hoffman following up with some questions about our involvement in the Adopt A Trail program and maintenance plan for trail 2N02.

As soon as Greg gets back to me with the specifics and a list of dates, I will post up here and update the OP.

Thanks again to everyone that has shown an interest in supporting this great program.

Okay fellow SCCX members, please read below and let's select a date:

Quote

Hi John!

Happy New Year to you.

We do need to set a date to drive the road together.  During this time, I will show you the Big Bear Ranger Station, equipment shed, green house, lock combinations, trailers and all resources that will be made available to your club.  Once were done there, we'll be off to write a road maintenance plan for 2N02.  We will capture all road features, signs and unauthorized activity.  Discuss methods to mitigate challenges we'll face together.  Also, schedule any equipment needs (chainsaws, heavy equipment or ??) and supplies needed to get the road maintenance plan completed.

So John, the next step is to set a date and hit the trail.

Thanks again for your clubs interest in the San Bernardino National Forest Adopt-a-Trail Program.

Sincerely,

Greg.

Email from Ranger Greg Hoffman.

Possible dates:

Saturday, February 2nd, 2013

Saturday, February 16th, 2013

Hey John.  Is this the first kickoff event for the adopt-a-trail crew?  Or is this a meeting that Greg has scheduled with you where a few others will be invited to come along?  It seems that this would be a good informational tour for the volunteers so that we would be familiar with the procedures.

Is the 2/13 meeting in Corona just a social get together of all the adopt-a-trail clubs or is that something we need to attend as well if we are a volunteer.  I am available on any of the Saturdays but not on Wednesday.  Sorry for all the questions.

It looks like this IS the big kickoff for our Adopt-A-Trail.  I hope we can make a big showing this first time out so that they know SCCX is dedicated to this project.  We probably won't get a second chance for this introductory tour that will highlight all the ins and outs of what goes into maintaining 2N02.  Although it is nice to "drive and dig," it would be beneficial to know the whys and whatfors as well.  This message is slowly going downhill with the "ins and outs" and "whys and whatfors."  :-\  But nonetheless, I am really excited to get to participate in the launch of SCCX's Adopt-A-Trail and look forward to seeing all you out there!

Marshann...no worries.

The Feb. 13th is the first meeting for AAT for 2013.  My understanding is that this meeting is to set the AAT Agenda for 2013.

NOT NECESSARY for club members to attend this, although I won't discourage it.  I will be there for sure information gathering and networking with the off road community.
