I have the instructions for this...I'll bring them to BB. They're in Crayon, so very easy to understand...pretty colors too.

Im headed south tomorrow.
Downtown LA on monday for a thing. leave prolly tuesday mid-day.
and drive over to la quinta to visit some fam - maybe check out joshua tree.
then heading towards lake isabella / kernville on wed or thursday.
Thinking of checking out redrocks s.p. on the way.
Maybe jawbone ohv
Possibly camping around lake isabella and generally checking out the area with intentions on fishing some parts of the kern river for a few.
Other than downtown la, ive never been to any of the other places like joshua tree or redrocks or the kern.
Any suggestions?

I would suggest you get a copy of "Backcountry Adventures, Southern California." It lists trails all along the places you want to go. For example, it lists Joshua Tree National Park Geology Tour and Burro Schmidt Tunnel (which includes side trips to Jawbone Cyn, Redrock, etc.). The book has maps with the trails shown in red and notations of where the POIs are (Bonanza Gulch Post Office, Holy Ash Mine). It also gives great background information about the areas you will be passing through. But best of all it lists the gps coordinates. Just plug in the coordinates and if you have a good gps, you should be able to follow the route. My Kenwood DNX car stereo uses Garmin gps and lets me put in coordinates to get directions. But there are other gps systems that would work, although a handheld unit would not give enough details to keep you on the right trail. I went on a three day trip in the areas you mentioned by following along with the book. It was a blast!
ETA: I should mention that you don't really need a gsp if you use the book. It gives distances until the next turn from a zeroed out trip meter such as, "Two well-used tracks on left. Zero trip meter and continue straight ahead, following wooden sign for Schmidt Tunnel."

You can also use the book "California Trails" which has several books in the same series for different parts of California and even Arizona. Again, you don't need any GPS to navigate through there as they have detailed directions and maps relevant to each trail.

Jude...you will still want your GPS in this area. Pretty remote from services. Either Ridgecrest to the north or Kraemer Junction to the south. A whole lot of Mojave desert in between.
I am actually headed to Ridgecrest next Sunday to do this specific trail along with Last Chance Canyon, which is a part of the Red Rocks area.
Also, south and east of the area is Randsburg ghost town/OHV park, a really cool area as well.
As both Marshann and Irwin suggested, a good trail book for the area is vital for hitting the POI. Google search Last Chance Canyon for some leads, and then hit Amazon.com. The Charles Wells book has a trail guide for Last Chance Canyon in the back as a supplemental description.

Cool. Thanks guys. Ive got several books and maps that cover some of the area, but it seems theres always a need for another.
I went through joshua tree today. Ill prolly head north tomorrow.
The premiere and after party last night was friken epic. Sometimes that whole la scene blows my... Uh, mind... it was like leg fest 2012 out there. Not to mention the crazy shoes.

Man, I ended up spending the rest of the week at Joshua Tree. Met some great people and had a lot of fun. Ran thru that canyon at the end of geology tour road with the group and fun was had by all. I think I made some new xterra fans while I was out, had a few guys with rv's admiring the set-up. I think the liked how you can sleep in the back and then just get up and go. And a couple guys with tacomas going saying "wow, really?". What ever that meant.
Im starting to like what so cal offers. ;D
-
Hey it is the land of plenty.... Plenty of everything ;D
-
Those Tacoma guys just had backseat envy. Glad you had fun there.

Go to your profile and select a profile pic/avatar to upload. The trick is getting a resized photo (100 x 100 pixels) and uploading.

Remember to change your avatar weekly :):)
