We're meeting at 9am. Can you cruise out for a little while?

I'm in...
But also In for any sooner wheeling as well ...
-
Count me in...Just found out I should be getting my X back on the 10th of august..
-
We're meeting at 9am. Can you cruise out for a little while?
Our checkpoint is actually friday night and they usually run until 2:00 AM and it is again a two hour drive to the meet location. At best I could only get six hours of sleep and then and then make the drive. The park looks kind of small, is there anything more to this meet or just the park?

The Obstacle course isn't huge by any means. There is enough room for several trucks at one time though. I have no idea how crowded it will be since it just opened the day before our mod day. There is more area to play in if you want to get in some mud. The mud area changes all the time depending on how much water they release from the reservoir. I would think the big draw here is to either drive your truck on the course yourself or being a spectator and watching other people drive rock crawlers on the course. I'm hoping to make it up there this weekend to check the place out and will take pics and provide more details.
But besides that I will be there and that's pretty awesome.
-
Put me down as a definite! Not sure about Shi though, gotta ask her later.
-
Woo Hoo!!! This is turnin into a party 8)
-
But besides that I will be there and that's pretty awesome.
Haha! :D :D :D
-
It doesn't usually get that crowded. I've biked pass it the last 2 weekends and it should have plenty of room.....I'll see u guys play as I pedal my ass off up the 39.
-
Count me in. New transmission and all.
-
Im in :)
-
Count me in. New transmission and all.
Added...thx Tim, glad to hear the X is fixed. How long did it take to get the new trans installed, and did your buddy take care of you? 8)
Im in :)
Added...thx Shiloh. You will get to flex your new suspension! I will be on the road tomorrow most of the afternoon...maybe we can chatMOAB then? LMK. :)
-
It only took 2 days and yeah my buddy took care of me. The dealer wanted over $5k to replace. i went new because it came with a 12mo 12k mile warrantee. With all the driving i do, I'll burn that up in 6 months.
-

Im good with that... why dont you call me when you get some free time. :P

I will be on the road to Reno at 1pm...call you then I promise.

Mud sounds good. I'm in.

Just a thought. I've biked up Azusa hundreds of times and gassed up at the Mobile. That Mobile won't hold to many full size rigs. There is a Costco nearby on Foothill that would be a good staging place for a larger group.
Just putting it out there.
I might make this too.
-
I might be in but the X wont be....am i aloud to ride my MOTO up?

Yep been thinking of this since the beginning. I'm thinking if the group gets too large there is street parking or a mile or so up the street and on the way to the park there is a city parking lot we can use. That way people can fuel up at the Mobil then head up the street to the parking lot. We'll see how the list grows from here and make changes accordingly.

I'll double check for you this weekend.

You go all the way to Crystal Lake? I was happy to see they finally repaired the road after 8 long years. I'd like to go up to the locked gate and ride up to see the damage between the gate and the Hwy 2. I wonder if they will ever open it back up.

Nice bike. Is that a KLR? Recently sold my KTM 640 Adventure. Haven't replaced it because I don't have room in the garage. I picked up a new project. Not really a project because it runs great.

There's a spot about half a block away across the street called Benny's liquor. It's a nice size parking lot and it shouldn't be a problem early in the morning.
There's also a Target near the corner of Azusa and Foothill.
The parking lot at the top of Azusa usually gets full with road bikers and people out for walks.
-
Hey guys...what about the Target on Azusa/Foothill?
Thanks for the site recon photos Danny. :)

Thanks for the site recon photos Danny. :)
Sounds good to me
-
Well like I said earlier if there are more people than will fit at the Mobil then we can meet up Azusa Ave at a City Parking lot. It's on the corner of Foothill and Azusa and is on the way to the off road park. The target is garage parking and some of the trucks won't fit with antennas / lift.
-
I went on a recon mission to the Off Road Park yesterday. I arrived around 2pm and was told at the gate the obstacle course was already closed for the day. Turns out that even though the Park is open from 8am to 4pm Sat and Sun the obstacle course is only open when they have a volunteer available to oversee the course. That is mostly Saturdays and not even all day. The volunteers come from the Azusa off road club and is the group behind the building of the course (over 10 years in the planning!) I spoke with the volunteer and mentioned I've made contact with the Club President to ensure the course would be open for us on the 25th. Together we walked the course and discussed how much of it our trucks would be able to handle. The guy (Ron I think) was pretty cool and I didn't get any attitude about Xterras, it might have helped that his brother drives an Xterra (he's from Wrightwood....anyone know him?). Ron said that yesterday there were at most 6 trucks at one time so it doesn't sound like the place is going to be too crowded.
After the tour I walked the course again taking photos. I'll post them in a while. Then drive down to the "play" area. There was a good football field size muddy area with several trucks bouncing and spinning and throwing mud. There are also plenty of sandy hills to climb up and other things to play on.
I'll work on the photos but it looks like it will be a fun day.
-
The parking lot at Target is not very big. I know cause I hellped build it 2 years ago or so.

Count me in as well.

Count me out. :-( Going out of town to a new construction site that whole month. Great recon. Way to step up as the club rep.

I hope to go but will probably be a spectator since I will bring my dog. He doesn't like offroading because he's a big boy and has a hard time holding on. But this is one of his favorite places to hike.
As another option for a meet place, there is a spot located on the left side of the road as you head up Azusa (which turns into N. San Gabriel Canyon Road). It's not very far up the hill from Foothill Blvd. Once you reach the end of the last row of condos on the right side, you would make a sharp left. It's easy to miss the turnoff because of the angle. The parking spaces are a bit tight and there are usually a few cars there. I have only been there in the late afternoon so I am not sure how crowded it would be in the morning.
You can see as you make the left off the main road that there appears to be a large open dirt area. I believe there is a fence there so that may not be an option for overflow parking, and creative parking may be in order. ;D
There is a trail that takes you down toward the bike path which is the two lane black road you see at the top of the picture. Once you cross over the bike path, you can hike around in that area. It

I thought about this location but like you said it's a left turn and we'd left turn out of the lot with lots of traffic from the houses just up the road. Plus the lot fills up fast on weekends.
Spectators are fine....hope to see you there!
-
Sounds good. I should be more truthful though. I tried to blame it on the dog on why I would be a spectator, but the truth is .... IH8MUD!!! I am still finding mud in the crevices of my X from years ago. I suppose if I did like mud, then I would be MudinX instead of RockinX. Yeah, I know, pretty korny. :D
Well the main focus for this trip is the rock obstacle course so you are in luck....no mud there. The mud might not even be in the main park on the 25th as it hot out and it might be dry. Oh and I agree mud gets everywhere and I'm not the biggest fan either.

I agree with both of ya, but I'm mostly looking forward to getting together with the club. Of course, watching OZ crush the rock garden ain't gonna be bad.

Mud good!
Good for complexion and hides trail stripes. ;D

Just a thought, it will probably be near lunch time after the Off Road Park. There is a Shakey's Pizza right down the road for pizza, beer or soda. It has a huge parking lot adjoining the theater and has easy access to the freeway. I think this is one of those "play it by ear" ideas but thought I would throw it out there.

You know...The SCCX Bylaws ;) ;) ;) The same ones that state members get demerits for messing up another members tire deflaters. Those Bylaws ;) ;) ;)
-
Hey guys are frontys allowed? Hows the trails there?
You are welcome to attend. As for the trails there are two parts here. One is the open sandy, dirt, mud area with some small hills to climb here an there. This are has a few designated water crossings and they are pretty serious about it. The mud section grows and shrinks based on how much water is released from the reservoir. So there aren't really any trails but more like an open area with some obstacles you can drive around or drive over and a mud area. Last time I was there I watched several trucks get stuck in the mud and get pulled out and some guys driving "4x4" trucks like idiots getting mud all over so they can say the are real 4x4s. So there is a mixture of drives/rigs.
The other area is the new rock obstacle course. It's a chained off, volunteer staffed rock course built with a little something for everyone but you will need a rock crawler to own the course. A lift, protection and tires would be needed to drive most of it but a 1985 Honda Civic will get you in the parking lot to watch the fun.
-
Count me as attending. I'd like to get out there and meet some of you guys.

Isn't Azusa pretty much just a mud-pit? Might be easier to clean up without skids.

Isn't Azusa pretty much just a mud-pit? Might be easier to clean up without skids.
Yes but they also built an off road rock crawler course there. It just opened a few weeks ago that is where we are going to focus our efforts.
-

This is true Frank...didn't think of that. I am working with a busy 7th grader etc. as well. If I make it this will be more of a "social drive by."
-
When we did this years ago xtoolbox (brian) got the key for an access gate from the ranger station. The gate is adjacent to the offroad park and allowed us access to a fireroad w some beautiful views. Just a thought...if anybody is still in contact w brian im sure he has better details.
-
Hey guys, they pushed my training up a few days so I will be leaving for 29 palms on the 26th. Which means I wont be able to stay out very long on Sat. Im still going to try and at least make an appearance, meet some people and maybe learn a few things. Which is what I had planned anyway since my X isnt really ready to be climbing rocks lol.
-

I think you are talking about the locked gate just up the road from the off road park. If you are that is the Rincon Shortcut a 26 mile long road from the 39 to the 2 hwy. It's and awesome mostly 2wd road but has been closed for several years now. I lead a geocaching group of 20 truck and 30 something up there to find a ton of geocaches I placed up there. Soon after they closed the road so SoCal Edison then the Station Fire went through the last half then more Edison work then they found Native American artifacts which stopped work then most recently there is a crew going through there installing power lines from the wind turbines in Tehachapi to LA. One of the workers is a cacher and has been checking on my caches.
Once the road opens back up I'd like to do a group run up there ending at Newcombs Ranch up the 2. Nice lunch spot and a fun day.
-
Okay everyone, OP updated.
The new meet place is the Costco parking lot located at:
Costco Warehouse
1220 West Foothill Boulevard, Irwindale, CA
Please gas up before arriving if you need to, although this probably isn't as crucial as on other runs as there probably won't be long trail driving involved.
-
Alright guys and gals, I have been camping for the past 3 days at coldbrook and crystal lake and had the opportunity to check out the ohv park to see what it looks like. There doesn't appear to be any mud pits looks mostly dried out and dusty possibly by the reservoir there may be mud for Any one that wants to spend a couple hours cleaning there truck(me)! The rock crawling course look pretty sweet as well. Can't wait to see you guys there!
-
Okay everyone, please double check the list to make sure you are on it. This is a very informal run, and really more of a chance for a meet and greet at a cool off road park. Get together, check out each other's Xterras, talk Club stuff, geocaching...all that.
From talking with RockinX there is a Shakey's Pizza nearby where we could grab a bite to eat afterwards/during etc. Sounds good to me.
There is also gas and a McDonalds right up the street from the Costco off of Irwindale Ave. and Foothill Blvd. I am hopefully in, trying to coordinate my weekend with the kid-o which is the hinge my decision will turn on.
Thanks for all the efforts of MaxPower, Toro, RockinX, and anyone else I forgot (sorry!)
Look forward to seeing everyone for sure! :)

Okay I'm feeling a lot better about the off road course. Didn't mention it before but there almost wasn't going to be a volunteer manning the course this Saturday....meaning we would have found it locked up. I've been assured there will be someone there for us. The main guy organizing/running the show will hopefully be there mid day to take photos and post them on the parks FB page.
As in the op the fee to get in to the off road area is $8 per truck. That money goes to the Forrest Service. The off road course is a separate area inside the Forrest Service land is free for us to use. They put out a donation box to help pay for supplies/upkeep/signs/improvements/snake abatement and all the other things required to keep the off road course open. I asked what the suggested donation was per truck and this is the response, "The donation thing has kinda flopped 22.00 over 3 weeks. We aren't making much progress there and well whatever we need just comes out of my pocket." I'm sorry but that's F____ed up!
If you go you don't have to donate anything. But if you have a good time and would like to say thanks and help out maybe think about giving some money. There is a locked box on the fence of the off road course that gets emptied everyday. No one will know how much you donated. I think it would be pretty awesome if we all pitched in and showed them we are a stand up club. It is after all just an off road club like us that is running the show.
Oh if you have an EZup type tent you might want to bring it. A chair, water and some snacks would be a good idea too.
-
Sorry I have to bail on this trip. Helping the gf move into her new house and my boss is catching on why i always call off work when I bring the truck dirty. See you guys another time.
-
Thanks Max for the update, I am sure we can all contribute something and see what the off road park is about.
Maybe our word of mouth and posting a few pictures on the SCCX Club site (here) and on the SCCX Facbook page can help them out too.
For sure get a banner shot with the group in front of their sign to help promote as well.
Justin - no worries, sorry you can't make it, see you next time.
-
I won't be able to make it, but here's a thought - everyone who wants to contribute put it into one envelope and mark it so that they know that it came from SCCX. Sometimes I get the feeling that a lot of these kinds of places think that Jeep people are the only ones to worry about, and this would help them to realize that we are real too.
Of course, if the total collected is like $3, then maybe it won't make such a good impression.
Just something to think about.

Good call Frank...I will bring an envelope.

Not a bad idea but since they only got $22 in 3 weeks I'm betting they will know it was us. Either way I say we help out.
-
Good call Frank...I will bring an envelope.
Better make it one of those big ass yellow legal envelopes cause were gonna blow that $h!+ up, right fellas?
-
I count 20 confirmations. Let's say 15 of us show up, because you know stuff happens, and some of us are just flakey :o If we average a $5-10 donation, that's $75-150 (Yeah, thats right, I have a calculator) in one SCCX get-together. The Azusa OHV park might erect an Xterra statue and lay out the red carpet the next time we roll up onto that place.
Let's do this RIGHT and represent 8)

I agree, and more importantly an opportunity to help in keeping the gates open for all.
-
Oh if you have an EZup type tent you might want to bring it. A chair, water and some snacks would be a good idea too.
I have two EZup tents I will bring. I'm not sure what size they are, but one of them has wheels on the case and they both seem fairly substantial. I have a third smaller one I can bring as well, but I accidently broke it a little bit. However, I think it will still work. Apparently you're suppose to read the instructions before trying to dismantle it. ::)
Thanks for taking care of the details Max and for making sure this event went forward! And for the excellent suggestion of helping to support keeping the offroad obstacle course open. I wonder if they allow stacking for us IFS? ;D
-
The OHV opens at 0800. I want to goof around a bit in the park for a bit. I'm thinking of heading up early. I'll be rolling out of the Costco at 0730 and being at the gates at 0800 if anyone is interested. I plan on being ,back, at the ohv's main parking lot at 0930 to meet up with the rest of the group. If anyone is interested please let me know.
Shoot me a text.

Okay with all the new categories I don't know where this post should go. Maybe I should post it in two places. I don't know. I'll give it a shot here first but I'm told I'm wrong a lot so it's probably better in the geocaching thread.
Here goes. There is a pretty famous geocache that we will be driving by tomorrow. I've done it but if there are others that would like to find it I can lead the way. Bring a flashlight and a pen to sign your name in the log and some swag to trade if you like. We could go for it after the off road course on the way down the hill so we don't hold up those muggers in the group (non-cachers).
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCGF2R
There are lots of other caches in the area but this one is a pretty cool "must do" and shouldn't take that long.

This looks really cool, and I am in for the find.

I was thinking the same thing. I haven't been there on a weekend so I'm not sure how crowded it will be tomorrow. I'll see how the day goes....

Hey guys, sorry to bail last minute but the wife is pissed off that I was going to go hang out with you fellas when I leave for a month tomorrow to 29 Palms. I guess I need to pack still too... Anyway hopefully I can make it to something before I deploy.

No worries Doc...catch you another time.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone in a few hours. Will have the Club banner and an envelope for the park donation, as well as SCCX stickers if anyone needs one. $5 each.

I'll see you guys in a bit, although I'll be without my beloved Xterra :'(
She's not ready to roll yet. Apparently building a custom bumper, from scratch, takes longer than we thought. Good things come to those who wait, right? But, I'm coming up to the meet with Drshankles.

Hey I had a great time today and glad we got a chance to hang out and BS all day. Seriously it was great meeting everyone.
I saw the following posted on Facebook by Mike the main guy behind the Offroad course. We missed him this morning but I spoke with him on the way out in the afternoon.
"Azusa Canyon Offroad Park
I wanted to give a big shout out to the Xtrerra Club that rolled through today. Class acts all of them guys, well maybe except for that Max guy-JK! Thank you all so much for the donation it could not have come at a better time! Sorry I was not there to shoot your trucks, but next time for sure."
I guess that means we'll have to go back again! SWEET!

We had a great time as always. I'm trying to figure out how to get the photos off my POS Blackberry. I got some good shot of Danny Ass deep in the muck and Terry saying he didn't whatto step inthe mud for fear of ruining his pedicure. ;D I can't say much since I sent Randy in to help dig him out and hook up the straps.
A special thanks has to go out to the mystery helper and his V8 FJ on 36's.

Tim...it was great that you and Randy could make it out again. Fun watching you guys spray mud everywhere. ;D
