Rattlesnake Canyon 2012 ~ THIS RUN IS A GO

DATE:  SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11TH, 2011

Look for the SCCX Club Banner and my white Xterra.

The group will be leaving the meet spot @ 9:00am.

FRS Channel:  2  Sub Channel: 24
Ham Radio:  146.520

**Please have a full tank of gas when you arrive**

**TO THE GROUP** - for this year's run we are stating that 4WD IS REQUIRED.

I have discussed this specifically with several Rattlesnake veterans, and with a group of this size, 2WD will simply compromise everyone's timely trail progress.

SCCX will be planning some 2WD friendly runs in the future for sure.

Rattlesnake Canyon ~ Moderate: ~ 25miles & 4 - 6 hours, weather permitting.  With this larger group please plan for 6-8 hours of trail time.

Starts off in the high desert washes, passes through a fun rocky, canyon, by some yucca & Joshua trees with a mine site and optional short dry waterfall climb along the way. At the burns canyon intersection we

I have some plans but either of those days works for me.  Sweet!  I've been wanting to go on my first SCCX trail run.

Uh....where is this trip?  You have any cords?

This is local Max...the Donner Camp photo is a reference to the last trip I made.  Snowed...a lot...and there were some comments made about spending the night on the trail, etc.

This is north and east of Big Bear, off of Hwy 247 is where the trail head starts.  I'll see if I can find specific GPS coords.

Okay that's what I thought.  No need for cords right now then......I'm still in.

Glad to see that scary photo(s) implying cannibalism now gone, it was creeping me out.  ;D

For anyone who has not done this trip, it really is one of the best.  For those that need to exit early, or who don't want to deal with snow (if there is any) they can always exit easily down Burns Canyon towards Pioneertown. That gives this run a lot of variety and flexibility for folks.

I can't make it on the 4th, might be able to on the 11th, but won't know for a while.

Safe to assume when you say "diverse and offer something for everyone from easy wash running, desert fast tracks, traditional trail rides, optional rock piles, with views, mine site, landmarks, and flora to see along the way" that a recently modded 2wd w/ tires and body armor would do alright and see most, if not all the trail?

I would not recommend this trail for a 2wd vehicle. Very tight and twisty that requires slow going. I was on the first 4 miles last weekend looking at some potential mining claims and was surprised at how much rougher it was than what I remembered from the last time.
Note to Ghost X, Feb.11th would work for me.

I will second the admonishment against a 2WD for this trail.  Too many spots where 4WD is mandatory, sorry.

I will put you down for 2/11 Don.

For everyone else, I have started a poll to see which date works best for everyone over on thenewx:

http://www.thenewx.org/forum/showthread.php?t=49141

Login over there and cast your vote, or let me know here.  I will start a count here and there of what date works best for everyone, and then majority rules.

The date is looking more and more like the 11th, as I am hearing there may be a contingent from AZXC coming too.  Glad you can make it IronAndroidX!  :)

Wasn't me, but I probably know who.  Nizmo McLovin is an Xterra LV peep, and that matches his description.  Did it look like it was Titan Swapped?  If so, that's Dan.

John/Sturndog, glad you can make it too!

Hey guys (and gals),

If you see your screen name on the list, but no first name, please PM me your first name so I can add it.  Will make for easier social introductions on trail day.

Also:  This Xcursion is shaping up to be a very large group, at least 15 trucks, possibly even 20!!  This is great news, and with a group of this size,  I would like update the trail time to closer to 6-8 hours, so plan for a full day on the trail and getting back home after dark.

Thanks,

John

Hey Marcin...thanks for posting that YouTube video over on Thenewx for Kevin's GoneMoab trailer.  Very cool.

Glad to hear that you and Ted can make it, thanks for making a trail with SCCX.  Glad to see the AZXC reaching out, hopefully we can reciprocate in 2012 and attend an AZXC Xcursion.  Anyone else from the Zone coming over with you guys?  I may be spending the night in Victorville on Friday, let me know if you are arriving early and maybe we could grab a bite to eat together?

I would really like to make this run (it will be my first with SCCX) I am stupid busy this time of year but luckily I live abut 3 miles from 247.

Sorry if this is understood or covered elseware but are "other" vics allowed on this run or just X's/Fronty's? I have a friend that just put an LS1 in his heep and wants to go if allowed. If not, no big thing, we will just go some other time, but he has never been on a run with so many rigs either.

hey everyone, I don't mean to throw a wrench into things here, but in case it wasn't mentioned before, the King of the Hammers race is in johnson valley on the 10th and there is typically a TON of people headoing out there. Although most of the traffic will be on the north side of the 247, don't be surprised if you run in to a few rigs heading up rattle snake to run  mottino wash.

I have not run Mottino Wash...where is it and what is the difficulty rating???

A very very large majority of the Xs frequenting this site are not capable of running Mottino Wash when it's in form.

Last time I went through there it was solid axles, crawler gears and at least 35s to make it, though it has been a bit.  And every single jeep on 35s got hung up on their diffs.

Anyone is welcome to join on the runs so long as they keep in mind that these are family oriented PG-13 runs meant to "enjoy the drive" that the Xterra offers on the trail and introduce newbies to the true outdoors.

I know there is a lot of yellow post camping in the Holcomb Valley area, but with the expected weather I am not sure about access.

Any GPS coordinates for a spot for the trailer? I can dry camp for a night or two so I don't have to drive two plus hours to get to the meet up spot then drive four to six hours on the trail. Where is the trailhead / starting point?

Is it cool if we park and wait at the trail head; just off of 247? We will be coming from Yucca Valley.

(Not that I don't want to drive in a giant convoy of X's and such)

Here's a Google Map of the info that was posted on the 1st post. I don't know how to make it editable by anyone... I can collaborate with anyone (if you want me to invite you via your email address)

GPS coordinates for the trail head are on the map in Post #1, and I cut and pasted this from the Rattlesnake Canyon Trial website:

Rattlesnake Canyon, located in San Bernardino County California, runs from Hwy 247, 18.22 miles east of the four-way stop in Lucerne Valley to Burns Canyon Rd (Just east of Forest Service Rd 2N02). At the trailhead on the desert floor at Hwy 247 the elevation is 3,102 ft. above sea level. The trail gradually climbs to 5,750 ft. above sea level.

No problem on waiting at the trailhead for the group.  The GPS coordinates for the trail head are on the map in the first post, as well as one of my last posts giving driving directions to the trail head as well.

We should be there between 10:30-10:45 at the trail head.  However, this could be earlier, so watch the boards.  Do you have a ham radio?

FYI don't drop off a trailer and leave it at the trail head.  It might not be there when you get back.

Remember folks, much of Rattlesnake Canyon is privately held, and open to OHV use at the ranchers' discretion.  They are cool with it, but please do not do anything that will jeopardize that.  I.e., don't mess with the cows and/or assume you have free reign to trample where-ever.

Can someone give me a ride back down the mountain??  He's staying in Big Bear and to drive back down the hill after driving up it all day is asking a bit much....Can anyone help out?

I plan on parking at the Kmart and leaving my truck there until we're done, so if anyone could help out it would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks so much and if you have any other questions just message me!!

Thanks,

I'm bringing my X.  BUT, she's sitting this one out.  As much as I'd love to bring her, she's 2WD, and with such a large group the last thing I want is to be an anchor and slow 30 rigs down because I need to get winched/strapped over this and that.  I'm totally good riding shotgun and absorbing some good info on products and tips on what to do/not.  Can't wait!!

Gentlemen..   something has come up so I will not be able to make this run..gonna be a great time so enjoy!

More accurately, IMHO, a great run, which seems to be getting an awesome response by an unbelievably cool group of diverse wheelers is simply getting too big given the location, trail, event..  pulling out to reduce headcounts and avoid frustration..

Yes, we are requiring 4WD for this trail.  With a group this size, in order to keep things moving this was a necessary decision.

No worries Marc...another time.  Maybe catch up with you later in the evening.  ;)

Okay, is the Xterra 4WD?  What size tires are you guys running on your rigs?  Do you have the capability to air up/air down with compressor's?  Check out the Xcursion guidelines when you can and let me know.  Thanks!

We can add you, but I am seriously considering a cap at 35 trucks.

What are everyone's thoughts on this??

Everyone on the list right now has either spoken to me or confirmed via Private Message.  A group this size will almost guarantee an 8 hour trail time for everyone, with a stop for lunch on the trail.

Also:  timing and sunshine will determine if we head west through Burns Canyon to Big Bear, or south east throuh Burns Canyon to Pioneer Town.  Trying not to finish in the dark this year.  :)

A full gas tank is fine for this run, please arrive at the K-Mart topped off.

If you feel the need to bring the extra 5 gallons, that is okay but unecessary for this run.

I would save the weight.

WHAT HAS TWO THUMBS AND STILL NEEDS A RIDE DOWN THE MOUNTAIN!?!??!!

THIS GUY!!!!!! ;D

Long story short;  GhostX is letting me ride in his rig, but he's staying in Big Bear, so it's pretty wasteful if he had to drive back down the mountain just to drop me off.

All I need is a ride down.  I shower daily so I don't smell.  I'll brush my teeth extra long that morning.  Double dose of deodorant.  I'll even bring snacks!!!

Thanks,

We decided to limit it to 30 in an effort to keep the group somewhat organized on the trail.

Like I said before, there are always last minute additions/subtractions, we will make it work.

Glad you can make it, sounds like you and Uncle Sam are buying us lunch on the trail.  ;)

Title: PRE-RUN TODAY, SATURDAY, JANUARY 28TH
Post by: Ghost65 on January 28, 2012, 11:18:02 PM
Alright ladies and gentlemen, in the interest of making sure this trail is ready for 25+ trucks in two weeks, Alex and I toured Rattlesnake Canyon and Trail 2N02 today.

The Canyon was in good shape, although I must say we will have fun spotting some of the longer wheelbases in a few of the tight spots.

Spotting will be key in some of these areas.  :)

AND, for those of you running stock step rails, be forewarned!  Sliders are better, and the risk of bending these up into your rocker panels is serious on this run.  My recommendation would be to remove, however, the choice is yours.

The run took us a little over three hours, as we hit the trail head at 2:00pm, and with some geocaching and one wrong turn, hit Baldwin Lake/2N02 West at 5:38pm, just at sunset.  So, with our group hitting the trail head at 11:00am-ish, we should have no problem making it through in time. (barring a winter storm blasting through and blanketing 2N02, it was clear today)

Here are a few pictures to tempt your dirt flavored taste buds.

Actually, was going to ask a favor.  I have someone riding shotgun with me (Christiaan, xxSVxx) who is leaving his 2WD Xterra at the meet spot, and was hoping someone could shuttle him back to the K-Mart to pick up his X.

Some of us (including myself) are staying in Big Bear for the night after the run, and I am sure we will look to grab dinner somewhere with the group for those that want to attend.

There are several good places to eat and wash down the dust in Big Bear, which we can discuss the day of.

Well...that is the complicated part.  Are you camping in Big Bear or Lucerne Valley?

Christiaan would like to leave his Xterra (2WD) in the K-Mart parking lot/meet spot and have someone take him back there after the run.  We are eating in Big Bear, and I am spending the night there.

Sounds to me like you are camping in Big Bear as well, and the shuttle idea probably won't work for you.  No worries.  We may ask to see if someone can pick him up on the way, maybe in Rancho Cucamonga, and then run him back down on their way back to town. LA/SD.

I've been to those mines.  There are several along the way.  They are vertical shafts that drop about 40' ft with an old rickety wooden pulley system above ground that are no longer functional.  A rope tied to a truck, a flashlight, and you are good to go.

I don't think we will have time this trip to get that in depth (pun intended) with mine exploration, but was just curious as I have never ventured that far off the trail.

I will add you both to the wait list, as right now we are capped at 30 trucks.

Please scroll throught the previous posts for the wait list protocols/Xcursion Guidelines.

Are both of your Xterra's 4WD?

Title: ***XCURSION MEET TIME CHANGED***
Post by: Ghost65 on February 05, 2012, 11:32:35 PM
After running Rattlesnake Canyon the past two weeks and timing the drive from San Diego to the meet spot (2:10 minutes) as well as the drive from the meet spot to the trail head (30-40 minutes), we have decided to move the meet/departure times back 1 hour.

We will meet at 8:00am at the K-Mart parking lot in Apple Valley.

We will depart at 9:00am from the meet spot.

After airing down we hope to be on the trail around 10:30.  This should give us enough time to drive up the canyon and land a the lunch meet spot around noon time.

This decision was precipitated by the large number of responses we have received from everyone about attending, which is very exciting, but also a big task to negotiate a group this size through Rattlesnake Canyon.  The additional time will be helpful.

We have also lifted the run cap, as we will be staggering experienced spotters throughout the group as well as placing the newer/stock vehicles in the front of the group to help them through some of the tighter spots.  For the more experienced drivers on this run, we are asking for your patience as well as help with some of the new Club members attending this run.

Thanks for all the support, and we look forward to seeing everyone at the meet spot and on the trail!   :)

The plan for the meet spot will be to distribute raffle tickets and run info sheets to everyone as they arrive, and then have a drivers meeting at 8:45 to cover everything else, followed by a quick raffle, and then head for the meet spot.

I will be leaving for Victorville/Hesperia and to meet Chris Haynes Friday night, and will have my laptop with that night.

PM me with any questions up to then, or PM me your phone number now so we can text or call for last minute morning questions on Saturday.

See everyone on Saturday morning.  :)

Hey Kyle...looking forward to meeting you on Saturday.  A few of us are staying in Victorville (I made my reservation last week, but they had plenty of rooms then) on Friday, and then Big Bear on Saturday night.  Victorville was pretty easy with lots of chain hotels to choose from, but Big Bear was pricey and the quality of hotels was spotty at best for what you were paying.  Surprising given there isn't much snow up there right now.

A few things to remember for Saturday

- Bring a lunch, we will stop to eat on the trail (raffle then).

- Pack a comfortable folding camp chair.

- Bring plenty of water for each person in your truck.

- Pack an air compressor and tire gauge to help air down/up.

- Pack a trash bag - SCCX practices "CITO" (Carry In, Take Out).

- There is a 40% chance of rain right now and the temperature between Lucerne Valley at the trailhead and Baldwin Lake can vary as much as 20 degrees (cooler) - a jacket, gloves, and a knit hat should be in your truck.

- Top off your gas & ice accordingly in Apple Valley, and there are plenty of places in Big Bear to fill up for the ride home.

- This group (SCCX) prides itself on being "inclusive, not exclusive"...so leave any road rage/bad attitude/aggro complexes at home.

- This will be a great day, enjoy the ride! :)

- Bring some cash, we will have Club stickers available at the meet spot and on the trail!

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone. We had a great day. We left a little early and didn't make it all the way to Big Bear with the rest of the group but (assuming I don't get orders before there is a next time) next time we do... Hell, next time I would like to include camping or shooting guns or a bonfire or something? Thank you for letting my homie Graham (the big red jeep) and his brother come along. It's not easy to get away from work (even on the weekends) for us so we can't thank you enough... And he even won stuff.  ;D
I am going to start a new post for just pics and vids of this trip. Mods, if this isn't the right thing to do (if we should just add everything to this post then please move. I just figured this would get deleted after the trip since there is all kinds of info on it?)
Sorry to everyone we didn't get a chance to meet face to face. After I got home I realized I should have gone around with a list of screen names and asked who was who and checked off who all I had met and who I hadn't.  ??? There really were a LOT of folks!!!
Anyway, I'm making the video I have now (getting rid of all the unimportant stops and starts) I don't know how long it will be in the end? 2+ hours? Maybe I should cut this up? My wife took some pics with her phone... Let me upload them real slow (my internet sux!) I just wanted to make this post since we were probably the first ones home. Thanks again.  8)

I'm home as well one wheel short of a full set.  ::) I managed to fall over backwards over a large rock/boulder after just finishing changing the blown tire and got hurt pretty good. Both thumbs took a beating as did my rather well padded behind. The thumbs were bothering me all day and the pain was numbing but I didn't want to take my "happy" meds until I got home. I'm happy now.  ;D

I took the sledge hammer to the dented rim and it's not willing to comply. Mounted the spare spare and I'm back to a full set.

It was surprising to see so many new folks and so many trucks out there.

Let's start a photo thread in that forum.

What a great day.

As I sit here in my palacial digs (Motel 6, Big Bear) and reflect on the day, I feel very fortunate to have met/wheeled/laughed/radioed with everyone on FRS/CB/Ham  :D all day on this cool trail.  Holding two mics and an FRS, plus a steering wheel, while carrying on four conversations (plus entertaining my co-pilot, Christiaan, xxSVxx) was a fun challenge!

A special thanks to a few people who really helped:

PaulXYZ, for stepping in and leading when I needed it.

Marc, Arch'sX, for quick spotting and coordinating radio comms all day.

Kyle, Kyle J. Thompson, for relay comms and a medical back up all day if needed.

Chris, ChrisHaynesUSA, for tailgunning and hiding my blood pressure medication. ;)

Don, Goldfish, for relay comms and trail directions.

Max, MaxPower for pre-running and giving me the lunch coordinates all day  ;)

Nick and Shiloh, for providing an overall calming effect and support (and forthcoming photos) of the trail leader.  ;)

All of the Club Frontier guys who showed up:  Morgan, Brian, Mark, Rick, Carl, Enrique...it was very cool to see your trucks in action.

Danny, DannyX, for providing the best trail side/lunch raffle I think the Club has ever seen. Thank you Offroadperformanceparts.com for the cool headlamps, recovery kit, 5 gallon gas can, LED light bar and STICKERS for everyone!

Danny II  ;D, Toro, for providing the other great raffle prize from White Knuckle Off Road, a GC for sliders.

One of the new members asked me if we did this kind of thing on every SCCX Xcursion, and I said "Of course!"  ;)

A big thanks for all the new members who showed up and had a great time on the trail!!!  [B/}

Some numbers:

36 trucks on the trail (according to PaulXYZ, an all time Club high)
50+ people
6 hours on the trail, a pretty good time for a group of this size.

I have to admit the number 36 looks a lot smaller on the Club site than on the actual trail!

It was a sincere pleasure meeting everyone, hope to see you all out on the trails for another SCCX Xcursion soon!

John, GhostX

I also thought it it was nice to have two Jeeps and a Land Rover join us on the trek and really show that we welcome everyone and prefer to be "inclusive" to one and all.  Thanks again everyone!

Cristian here, with the Land Rover. On behalf of my wife and I, I want to thank everybody in the group. The group was very welcoming, in good spirits, and overall fun to be with. I hope to make many more trips with the group and hopefully contribute more in the future. John(ghostx) thank you for everything, and I cant remember who lent us the radio, but thank you very much.

Cristian

This was a great run! Thank you John (GhostX) for all of the work you did putting this together. Pics will be coming soon. I took about 400 of them, so it will take me some time to edit them all.

Ditto on that thought...  Thanks John (Ghost X) for extending the invite over to the Club Frontier (CF) group.  I know you and a lot of others put a lot into planning and prep on this outing and all went really well.  I'm looking forward to do more events in the future...

A big thanks to John for putting this all together and making it possible..  It was great seeing so many old friends together again, Matt, Nick, Shi, Jim Amber, Scott, Chris H and Chris D, and to meet a cool crew of new people, new friends..  too many to list ..  I think it hit me early that this was a pretty monumental event..  Did what little I could to facilitate....  Had a great time.. Special thanks to the Sponsors, to Shi and Amber and all other photogs for all the great pics..
Till next time folks..

Great run. Thanks to John for putting it together. It was great meeting you all. Lori, Aspen and I can't wait until the next run! (I have some photos, but I'm having trouble downloading them to the site. Are there any special commands for Macs?)

Chris...a special thanks to you for helping out on the HAM radio during the Xcursion, AND being selfless in helping to get Christiaan (xxSVxx) back to the meet spot post run.  Thanks much!  :)

I had a Blasty, Blast. Thanks so much for letting a Jeeper come out and play. Any day you can get out and wheel on a beautiful trail like Rattlesnake Canyon is a good day. Thanks again from the Big Red Jeep guy.

I'd like to personally thank John for not only carrying me along on this Xcursion, but leading a very large group of off roaders in a very efficient manner.  Working the ham, CB and FRS all at once was a sight to see and I was left in awe.

I'd also like to thank SCCX for an outstanding outing.  Everything went off without a hitch and it was really smoother than I anticipated.  Everyone was nice and welcoming and I loved how everyone respected each other and were very helpful about everything.  This is a stand-up group of off-roaders and I'm honored to be a part of it.

Now, as far as when will I personally be able to bring my truck along, well your guess is as good as mine....I can't decide on whether to just mod my rig or start saving for a legit 4x4, but that's another thread for another day.

A sincere thanks to everyone involved.  It was a great day and I hope to experience many more like it!!

-Christiaan (the guy riding shotgun in GhostX's rig)

p.s.- Chris (panathrasher), buddy, the firewood guy called.  He said he had a BIG SALE for you?  Dunno what that's all about.... ;)
