Since I moved up to Arrowhead I make time to explore the trails around here every weekend if I can. Last weekend I took 3N16 (Holcomb Valley Rd/Big Pine Flat Rd/Crab Flats Rd) all the way from Grass Valley Lake to NW Big Bear (Baldwin Lake) and I haven't seen any mines other than a few that have been demolished. There are a ton of side-roads but I wasn't sure which would be the best to explore since I had my wife and daughter with me so I just stuck on the main route. I know many of you are far more familiar with the area up here than I am so perhaps someone can save me a little exploration time. I've seen pics of caves that can still be entered and explored up there, just need to find em'!

I have some friends that know BB very well. I'll ask them and see if they know.
As for mines/tunnels..... Have you been to the Burro Schmidt Tunnel near Red Rock Canyon off the 395? 2000' long and you can walk through plus in the same area are some talc mines....not as deep but still impressive.

You really need to pickup a 4x4 trails map available for free everywhere that shows you all the dirt roads, fire access trails and mines in the area. You can start with checking the local rangers station to see if they have them in stock. It looks like a newspaper bnd its free.

Most of the mines that I've found up there are collapsed and not impressive. If you really want good mines you should check out Calico.

Hey i asked my friend and he suggested you post your question on MyJeepRocks.com as there are a few guys there that know the mines. I know I felt a little sick too with the thought of posting on MJR..... Anyhoo, that's what I found out so I thought I'd pass it on.

It was a joke.

thanks for the replies. I just got back from some trails around Silverwood Lake, found a good spot to do some plinking with my .22. I knew the majority of replies were going to be "get a map!"; haha! The San Bernardino Forest is the worst, I never come across any of the maps at the Ranger Stations. I'll have to pick some up at the tack shop in Arrowhead, hopefully they have some.

Try the offroad shops cause they usually have the ones for 4WD trails. Theres a good offroad shop up in Big Bear Lake but I forget the name. Anyone?
