Title: Winter Mojave Road 2020
Post by: Celt on May 27, 2019, 09:53:48 AM
Posting for the Winter Mojave Rd, January 17th thru the 20th 2020 over MLK weekend. I'm planning on the West to East route and staying at the Golden Nugget in Laughlin NV. It has nice accommodations and they give us a pretty good discount. If there is interest in doing a return trip either along the trail or a modified run I will entertain that too. I was originally thinking about a smaller group but in discussion with Jayrat he brought to my attention there has been a decent amount of new members so I'm opening it up for everyone. If we have to we can run two groups on the trail to accommodate vehicle limitations. The ones who have been on this trip before know how things go and how much fun it is. Those that are interested can preview the previous year's links. If you are interested post up. I know life gets in the way sometimes but if you decide you want to go towards the end please stay firm in that decision. It costs money for the trail leader(s) for permits, incidentals and time allotted in planning etc.

As in before the big rules are:

1: Have a great attitude, don't take yourself too seriously.
2: Show up with a reasonably maintained vehicle with front and rear recovery points.
3: Bring plenty (Lots) of firewood.

I could care less if you have a HAM radio, FRS, Walkie Talkie or just start waiving your hands like a maniac for attention. This trip is about getting together with friends who enjoy the high desert in winter conditions. Most everyone has the right gear but if you don't post that up. Someone will have an extra something to loan you. I would prefer you have a 4WD but would entertain a 2WD as long as you have the recovery points I mentioned and good AT style tires. Everyone is on the hook for their own meals. If you want to have smaller group meals that's between you and your buddy as nothing will be formally organized. It's just plain too difficult to have group feeds with breakdown possibilities and the unknown of the weather. I don't want starving people eating half frozen chow at 2200, I'm sure you get the idea.

It's a good idea to bring along an additional 5 gallons of fuel (Or more) if you have a built vehicle that's not so great with the MPG's. The trail is roughly 130 to 160 miles. Bring enough water to last you the length of the trip as there are no facilities along the entire route. If you are concerned about where to put your beer, I will see if I can't make some room in my fridge to accommodate you. I know, I know a selfless act but a trail leader must make some sacrifices. In years past I have not heard any complaints about the trip or how it's run. At least not by anyone that's not still 6' under out there but that's a different story altogether. This trip is by design to get families together in a semi-rugged environment and use all that snivel gear you have piled up in your closets and have a whole lot of fun. Oh yeah, NO SODA LAKE...............nope, nope, nope not gonna do it NOPE!

There is a trip report from the 2019 run, Just cant seem to figure out how to attach it to this post.

and this....

I was looking at the water height gauge (USGS) from the last run and it was about 4.47 feet with a flow rate of of about 2.60 cubic feet per second. Historically by year the water height at Afton was just over 4 ft in 18, 3.87 ft and about the same in 17, 3.75 ft in 16 and last but not least.... 3.68 ft in 15. Current depth is 4.47 ft, which is about the same depth as it was in 19.

Keeping in mind that I went out with a stock height X and was able to make it thru should give someone people a sense of comfort. Had a great time, unfortunately I will not be able to attend the 2020 run. I will be with you in spirt though!

FOBBIT, FOBBIT!!!!!! How dare you! Ha ha ha.

Unfortunately, I told the boss I had changed my mind.... and she advised me (Very lovingly might I add) that I needed to change my mind again. As I have to be in north western Las Vegas at the Matriarch's castle to do some heavy lifting. I tried to wiggle out of it by offering up our little price to do the lifting.... Needless to say I might be sleeping in the X for the next few days... LOL

Anyone got a good air mattress I can borrow?????

You are added to the list. As to the mud it's very difficult to say as that depends largely upon how much rain there is next winter. Either way it will not be like the 2018 run because we are bypassing Soda Lake as it's just too dangerous in the winter and caustic to the vehicles. You definitely will not need a snorkel. In the first post I set the general requirements and they are few. If you have further questions it's fine to ask as I want to make sure everyone going is as prepared as necessary. This trip is a whole lot of fun and has thus far been very successful with the great folks that go.

Since were getting a good sized group I would like to try and get a head count for those who are planning on staying over in Laughlin the evening we come off the trail. I'm going to start working on locking down the reservations with the group rate. Jayrat spoke to me about leading a group to the Lava Tubes on the first night so we would split the group for those who wish to see them while the rest of us secure the campsite. The other question I wanted to pose to those going is do we want to push through to the NY mountains on the first day of travel and stay there two days? If we did that everyone would have to be up and moving early, probably with lunch etc on the run. The lava tube trip breaking into two groups is still very doable but I think they would be about an hour behind getting into camp. As a contingency there is the flat area with the cattle corral before Beale Mtn. camp spot. That would be very wind protected but much tighter in sleeping arrangements.

My 2 cents:
I am willing to 'guard' the camp while others do the tube.
I don't like getting up early for any reason, especially in the cold  :o :'(
I will roll with the flow  ;)

In my opinion, I think it might be a feat to get that many people to NY Mt. In one day.  If this is the way we end up going, I still would recommend going our traditional route.  Last year we skipped Jackass Canyon and rode the rail line all the way to Kelso.  While it was nice avoiding the whoops, it took a lot of fun out of the trip.  We left around 9am, and made it to camp around 2 if I remember correctly.

If we split the group up, I can help Jay with the lava tubes.

In preparation of the trip, I ordered this for our place at the mailbox.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190603/719a3e24b5414bf703026d5809264e94.jpg)

I'm already leaning closer to not trying to make the NY mountains on the first night. It is a big group and we would have to be up and moving very early. I want to go through Jackass canyon and not circumvent that. That route also gives us a few outs in case the winds are really bad to find a more suitable and sheltered spot than Beale Mtn. As I remember it there is a platform which looks like an old mine along the north end of the Mtn that might provide a little more shelter but I've never been up there to check it out and see if it's suitable for a large group. I'm sure we can send a scout out there while waiting on the lava tubes crew to rejoin everyone. While the trip is still a ways out I'm getting excited as this trip is always a lot of fun!

I'm not sure that I will be able to do the return trip even if we get enough interest as it might be difficult with work schedules. If you don't want to reserve a hotel room that is up to you. Most guys get one as once we get off the road you are pretty grimy and a hot shower with a good nights sleep is pretty nice before the drive back home the next day.

On post #51 it shows you wanting to go and you are already listed #20. Did something change I'm unaware of? I'm assuming you still want the spot right?

You are added to the list. As to the mud it's very difficult to say as that depends largely upon how much rain there is next winter. Either way it will not be like the 2018 run because we are bypassing Soda Lake as it's just too dangerous in the winter and caustic to the vehicles. You definitely will not need a snorkel. In the first post I set the general requirements and they are few. If you have further questions it's fine to ask as I want to make sure everyone going is as prepared as necessary. This trip is a whole lot of fun and has thus far been very successful with the great folks that go.

At Jay's taco fiesta on Fiesta Island Steve C expressed interest in doing this trip from East to West. While I think it's nice to get a good shower and sleep the last night before driving home there are some benefits to this. I was thinking we should stay two nights in the NY mountains. Getting to NY Mtns from Afton would require getting up early and really pushing hard through the desert to get there. On the other hand coming back home from Beale Mtns would require getting up fairly early to get all the way out. It would limit those that want to stop at the lava tubes etc so everyone could still get home at a reasonable hour. The last thing I want to do is fatigue the drivers. East to West with one night in NY Mtns and one night at Beale Mtn will increase the time we have stopping at the favorites such as the mailbox to sign in. I would love to make this trip four nights so we could stay that last night at Beale Mtn. but I'm not sure that would work with many of your schedules. If you are going on this trip please post up your thoughts and vote in the poll we still have plenty of time to make a decision. I'm all about doing the mob mentality with direction on this.

I like the idea, however my issue is I know a few people usually don't continue on the last day and head out early.  Also, my father in law and I have to be in SD the last day in the very least late afternoon, so we would have to work around that for us.  I look forward to crossing the water in Afton, so it would be a bummer to miss that.

The latest update to this trip is I have 7 out of 23 participants interested in hotel reservations. The more people I get to commit will help reduce the costs of the hotel rooms. While at full price they are not very expensive I would rather try and save you guys a few bucks. If I don't get folks letting me know I'm not going to go through with getting a group rate deal and just let everyone make their own reservations. When I make the group rate reservations I have to sign contracts and the hotel wants fairly clear numbers before they draw up the paper work so your help is appreciated. So far we have 4 out of 23 giving input on which direction we should take. This trip should be as much fun as the other and maybe even more so because we have a lot more folks going that many of us have not seen in a long time. All I'm asking is a little more input from the fence sitters. It's not hard, just click a button or make a quick post to let me know what you want on this trip.

If we are going East to West, I will definitely will be in for at least 2 rooms.  I will reach out to Fire Ninja and #2 to see what they want to do.

It's a pretty far drive from SoCal to not stay the night before.  I recommend everyone joining us.

1/16: Arrive at Laughlin at your own time
1/17: Depart on trail, camp in NYM

1/19:Depart Beale, camp in Afton
1/20: Depart Afton, end of trip

What I am planning is arrive Laughlin 01/16.

Start the trip 01/17 to New York Mtns.

Depart New York Mtns morning of 01/19 (2 nights there).

Head to Beale Mtn 01/19 possibly different location and weather dependent so were not getting blasted by winds but I'll post it.

Depart from final camp 01/20 to home.

Because we are doing this from east to west it gives us a little more of a jump and able to do a relaxing two night stay over rather than jumping camp each day. In looking at the map it should be easy to get to the lava tubes and will be a good lunch spot. From there we can easily pick up Jackass canyon and on out so we won't have to split up the group. I know there has been a lot of changes but I'm trying to do things just a little bit different in order to see some new ground while still being able to see all the things everyone likes along the way.

OK Celt.....

After months and months of arguing, negotiating, crying, making idle treats and finally succumbing to the will of check book 6....  I have been cleared to go. I know the lists are full at this point, but if I could be added to the super standby list, that would be great. Im pretty sure that you guys will be filled to capacity, However I will keep hope alive!

If I am moved to the "GO" List, I will be staying in Laughlin the 16 and an extra night at Afton. Just to unwind and decompress and finish off what ever adult beverages are left over.

Looks like everything is a go thus far and everyone that's goin is a-goin! (A-list folks if you ask me). I've got some fresh hard wood cut up and thought I'd mention for everyone to try and buy decent quality hard wood that will burn long and hot vs. the gas station pine bundles. Were out there an extra night so please bring as much as you possibly can. If you don't have room let me know and I will of course as always volunteer the selfless act to haul some of your beer along just to make that extra room. A quick reminder if you have not got your room time will be running short if you want to take advantage of our group rate. Some of you may be independently wealthy and wish to stay in the Ritz. If that's the case please five finger discount some towels from the bathroom and a few bottles of the complimentary champagne for us blue collar types. I'm really looking forward to this trip with everyone as were sure to hear a lot of laughs around the fire and good times with friends seen far too frequently and missing the ones who didn't get to go.

Were planning on leaving here at 10 and we cut across San Elijo Hills to get on the 78 to I15. How about the Kaiser medical facility in San Marcos about 1040 and roll through from there? I'm stopping in Barstow for fuel and picking up the rest of the Santa Margarita crew that's going.

SCCX Public Announcement

I wanted to give everyone a heads up. The reservation manager called me and said as of today only six reservations have been made. Please get on this ASAP to get the discount. If you don't then a higher room rate will be charged as they can only hold them open for a little while longer.

That is all...

We are at capacity from the permit. I will be glad to place you on the standby list. Unfortunately we can only accommodate what the permit allows for so my apologies.

Jay, that's pretty sad they are going to take everything from the Mailbox. Most folks like to stop there and check it out. The kids always seem to really love it. I have no problem with conservation but this is just silly. All it takes is some new park superintendent to fold to those whose agenda to entirely close off the park to anything other than foot traffic for something like this to happen. I wish there could be a compromise struck and put a simple fence around where everything is so there would be a boundary where people could still enjoy this. What's next traveler's monument? They already got the school bus. These things are what really make a unique experience out there.....

I guess that they consider all the crap, needles, fires and tents in the cities National Monuments.

Jayrat, I would like to reply with a snarky comment... but I deserved that.

I can't remember the last time that I had a PBR (OK, I never remember much after my drinking) but we will meet soon to remedy that, I promise.

Meet-up will be at the Avi Casino https://www.avicasino.com/ parking lot over near the gas station for a drivers meeting at 0930. Depart for the trail @ 1000. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the area or have questions let me know either post up here or shoot me a PM.

Please try to be prompt so the group is not held up. Try and bring as much wood as you can take so everyone can enjoy a warm fire in the cold. Since we will be doing some detours for camping spots etc I would recommend bringing 5 gallons of fuel as the next fuel stop won't be until the end of the trail. I'm getting really excited about the trip and seeing everyone again!

Hi all, looking forward to the trip!  I have a little buddy heater and a 5lb propane tank for sale if anyone is interested.  I can bring it with me.  Might come in handy for someone on the trip.  $45 each.

REMINDER: Bring lots of wood. Don't be that guy. While winds are showing mild it's going to hover around 29F by night.

We got home Sunday at about 6 p.m., slightly after dark.  Sharon came out with a flashlight to inspect "her" trailer to see what damage I had done!  Then we spent yesterday cleaning it up and showing her how it was all set up.  She then re-organized everything to her satisfaction.  Now she wants to know when we are taking it out again, preferably before Desert Rendezvous.
