Timeline from when I bought to current status.

Day I bought the X, Stock with 112,xxx miles. Came with an awesome 2pac mixtape CD.

One of the first things I did was to modify my headlight housings for black bezels to make it looks like the 08+ Xterra. Also bought and installed a knock off Rigid Industries 20” 180w LED lightbar & factory fog lights with no switch. I was able to source out P4X suspension which is an upgrade for me (I have a type S with generic factory shocks)

For a while I didn’t do much to the X due to doing my research and getting introduced in the offroad/overland community. I did upgrade to LED interior lights. Here are a few pics of the first gather with SCCX at the Inland Empire Portillo’s meet.

Shortly after my first meet, I finally sorted out the situation with my foglights. Since my X production date is 07/07, this is when the switch to the newer design of the combination switch occurred.  Instead of getting a 08 prior, I had to source out a 08+ combination switch.

I attended my first ever excursion with the facebook group and a few fellas from sccx. Had a awesome time. Made it thru even with street tires.

Early Sept I came up on this dope deal on offroad wheels with 285/75R16 KM2 tires. Super badass upgrade for me.

Late sept I picked up Jordan’s prior rear suspension set up, Leafpack with dual ALL set up. Im going to clean them up from the rust and repaint them. Also picked up Rick’s old front suspension. Super stoked about my suspension upgrade. Just waiting for a day to install my lift.

After more research, I did with the idea to add dust indicator pods (with amber covers) on my X.

Ok so lots have happened since my last update. Some of you may have me in your social media so you already know.

Ok since last update I have installed the my lift i have pieced together. It was all fine and dandy but I have noticed it was ridiculously stiff as fuck. Not only that but I didn't grind down enough of the strut bucket in order for the SPC arms to have full range of motion. Here is the final product. I did clean up the rear leaf pack and sprayed a fresh coat of black paint to prevent further surface rust. Also threw a K&N filter since I had a 30% off coupon at autozone.

After a week of the stiff nightmare, I decided to pull the coilovers and purchase strut spacers and go with the factory bilstein shock. I been riding like this til current date. I did mistake and blame the coil spring rate for how stiff it was and didnt see how much preload it has. So as of now I will keep the coils until I either get a metal bumper or go 4wd. BUT it may change so I could possibly sell them who knows.

This is how the X stands right now with strut spacers, dual aal and SPC arms. So far very smooth ride. My only complain is the amount of squat I have in the rear. NOT a fan of it, might get adjustable shackles to eliminate the squat and level it out.

With all of my lights on.

This past weekend I took a road trip with my fam up to Sacramento. A few days before I serviced my diff and this resulted.

From a few friends and my trusty Nissan buddy over at Fontana, I was told that the peice is from the spider gear. I was advised to not drive long distance until I find out how my diff looks, OOPPSSSS I just drove abit under 1k over the weekend. lol
I was told this is the perfect opportunity to swap my rear axle to the M226 rear end, but there are a few things that need to be modified in order to make it work. Until I get the diff cover off and really inspect the gremlin of a diff, I will determine what I will do with the X. My wife isn't happy about what I come across the X regarding maintenance, but its the risk we take when buying a used car. So im doing my best to keep the X and still enjoy it.

So first stop at Sac town is the capital to have a word with Jerry Brown and his gun grabbing minions.

Down in Pyramid Lake.

Plans for the X til the end of the year:
Nothing at the moment since until I get the transmission repair paid.
- Source out info regarding M226 swap
- Finish paying the truck off
- If I find a deal or a set of used adjustable rear shackles, will pick up

Plans for the new year:
purchase all of the 4wd conversion. I already have the front diff, axles and propeller shaft sorted, just need to pay for them.

From what I have researched, the 2wd and 4x4 trans are identical trans except the output shaft, the 2wd is slightly longer than the 4x4 ( its the output shaft that splines to the transfer case).I have talked to the transmission guy who rebuilt my trans, he stated that he is willing to tear my trans again to switch out the output shaft and get everything installed for a good price. its just matter of sourcing out the parts. lol BUT thanks anyways Danny for the link. if the guy was selling it with the transfer case, then it would of been a potential purchase.

I am pretty sure I have seen the transfer case for a Xterra just sitting in the back of one at the junk yards down by the border.  Many of the parts you needs are probably just waiting for you, though I know there are only 2-3 4x4s down there.

Just wondering, where are the auto junk yards in the LA basin area?  Are they all spread out or is them some lumped together like we have in the SD area?  Ours is like a shopping mall of junk yards, 50 or more in a 1/2 mile square area.

If you get a used Transfer Case, I highly recommend changing out the Companion Flange and Companion Flange Seal on the front side of the case before installing it. The old design sucks balls and is prone to leak. Changing it before installing everything would make life easier in the long run.

UPDATE:
Holy cow, did it take a while to update this. Lot has happen since my last post on my build. Ok so things have changed such as planning n viewing things in a different prospective. So as some may know, I sold everything on my Xterra. Basically back to stock. I did it because I was focusing in lift and looking badass instead of actually learning the ropes on the off roading culture. I want to start stock and build myself along with the X up to where may of you are. I want the Xterra to build and work around my style of offroading, not me work around what I have on the truck.

I am still planning to 4wd covert my X for the experience and the learning point of it. Yes its not the best financial way to look at things, but if learning first hand is worth a couple of hundred nor thousands of dollars, why not.

Slowly but surely my 4wd conversion parts are coming in. I already have front axles, hubs and diff mounting bolts. I recently acquired a matching ratio front & rear diff/axle from Joe. Its a 3.13 ratio but again, this is to get the truck 4wd mode and learn the ropes before jumping to a better ratio. Only thing left is transfer case with the shorter outputshaft and both driveshafts. Electrically I will be doing my own control unit to switch on and off from 2wd to 4wd. I do have a local offroad shop that I have been talking to and they are willing to help me to design and put together an independent 4wd selection system. Its just a waiting game at this moment.

I will be preparing myself and truck for the upcoming Bradshaw trail run. Will have enough time to throw on the rear axle and possibly pick up a set of K02 265/75R16 that a family member has sitting at his garage. Hopefully I can hit that trail in 2wd so I can really learn.

Every story has its beginning as well as its ends... The story of this X's build has come to an end.

To wrap it up from the last update, everything has been the same, nothing new to the X. the spare C200 rear end will end up in the X due to the one I have on right now, its starting to produce the very distinct diff whine. So that will thrown on maybe in a few weeks.

Reason why this build thread will end because, its officially the family vehicle, strictly meant to transport my wife & son comfortably. With that said, say hi to my new toy :)

Build thread will soon commence.

So, I thought we'd tackle this question together, here in your build thread(s) so you can reference it for future...reference.  :D

In the Shout Box you asked:

Quote
So just ordered the last of the maintenance parts for my 1st gen. I have done everything as far as serviceable maintenance on it to ensure I got my x in tip top shape before any mods. Now my dilemma is, should I start with basic upgrades such as lift & wheels or stay with my current status ( everything stock except rear swaybar removed and AT tires) & improve my wheeling skills, then gradually upgrade key parts.

The answers to your questions are...yes, and yes.

You should definitely continue to get out (either solo or with the group) and get your tires in the dirt.  Each experience builds your off road library of information recall.

With respect to your question about mods/equipment/tire upgrades...upgrade your stuff as necessary, as you experience a trail/obstacle that you came away from saying, "Next time a (insert part/accessory/tool/recovery gear here) would come in handy, and help me get through that section better."

You have been on this forum for a while now, and contributed well thought out posts and respnoses.  Time to take that knowledge, combined with your new 4x4, and get outside.

Start with easier green routes, and build towards the trails that you see and want to upgrade your rig to tackle.  Like you said, starting from stock and running the rig to upgrade with necessary items is sincerely the best way to go.

PM me if you have any questions...we are all here to help (you empty your wallet  ;) )

I agree with Ghost in his post. There are tons of upgrades and many people will have opinions on what you need to have added onto your vehicle. I think you are going about it smart by getting the X in good running order. Get out and get your wheels dirty and you will start seeing what type of off roading you prefer and you can start tailoring your upgrades around that all the while hopefully not completely emptying out your bank account.

I believe I will have to explain myself in order to understand why the sudden change of plan or train of thought. Ever since I started modding vehicles, I went off whats the current trend or what seems to be useful but not really trying it in a real time situation where the modification would be necessary. I have built a few cars from street drag to full on drift car but never really went out there and put them to their full potential. So I have the mentality where I mod without using it, basically throwing money away. BUT now since Im really getting into 4wheelin and see a different style of modding, NOW i see it differently and its like a whole new way of modding to me. Mod slowly while learning the vehicle im actually building. On my 2nd gen I thought I had a plan where its sort of a guideline but it not really. It was basically a checklist to mod the X as fast as I can so I can be  "trendy". Now that im trying to learn my 1st gen, its fun actually learning to mod and drive.

I agree with Ghost in his post. There are tons of upgrades and many people will have opinions on what you need to have added onto your vehicle. TBH this ideology of modding is new to me, knowingly I been modding since 2008 and be a professional technician since 2010.
